Hugh Hefner was a Fighter for Blacks & Civil Rights By Gloria Zuurveen Editor-in-Chief I was a new member on the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles Press Club when the legendary Hugh Hefner was crowned with the LA Press Club’s first honoree, as a Champion of Free Speech in November 2011. It was an amazing and exciting time to be in the company of the very person I had heard so much about as the founder of the Playboy Empire of entertainment including the Playboy Magazine and the Playboy Clubs. Hefner, the world renowned uninhibited and outspoken man who brought sex to the forefront of American lives like they had never known before, passed on my birthday, Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at the age of 91. It was him, live and in living color at the Millennium Biltmore in Downtown Los Angeles. But to my surprise, I also had the immense pleasure to also meet and hear another legend in the entertainment field of comedy, the one and only one Mr. Dick Gregory. It was Gregory who roasted Hefner and informed the waiting audience who had come out to meet up close and in person Hefner, the Champion of Free Speech Award recipient during the launch of the National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards Gala Event. Hugh Hefner was our first honoree, as a Champion of Free Speech. His friends and family joined him as he was roasted by Dick Gregory, who passed away a month ago. As he sat down for an interview with Press Club President Robert Kovacik tears showed in his eyes. “I did not expect this to be so emotional,” he said. Like the opportunity he was given by Hefner, who in the worst of times for African Americans in the 60s, to perform at the famous Playboy Club when most other white owned, upscale clubs were off
limit for blacks to perform. It was Hefner who hired Gregory putting him on a path of prosperity that he had not known before Hefner’s decision to step outside of the status quo to invite Gregory inside of the Playboy Club’s doors. Gregory spoke with passion and compassion about the opportunity afforded him from a
wealthy white man who didn’t have to do it but he did and because he did it Gregory never forgot and throughout his life at every opportunity to speak about the goodness of Hefner he did with conviction and love in his heart for having been given the chance to do what he loved doing speaking truth to power with
laughter that made one think about the America we live in. Gregory said that back in the day, it was Hefner who gave a $25K reward to help solve one of the most brutal murders of the civil rights era: three young civil rights activists killed in Meridian, MS As a staunch supporter
supported Rev. Jesse Jackson’s PUSH Coalition which is largely dedicated to fighting for civil rights for African American people. Rev. Jackson said, “Hugh Hefner was a strong supporter of the civil rights movement. We shall never forget him. May he Rest In Peace.”

Hello Readers, Pray for the President of these United States of America. He is in need of prayer and the Word of God tells us that the prayers of the righteous availeth much. So if we really want to see some changes for righteousness which is said in the Word of God exalts a nation then we are sinning by omission if we don’t pray for the president as we should and believe that God is truly in charge no matter how many names he call athletes’ moms. We are to take God at His word and lean on Him to keep His promises. If we, who say we are Christians, truly believe the Word of God, we must appropriate the power within us to do what He said and we must have faith in what He promise He will do. Please don’t get it
twisted and think that God’s Word is fake news. No. God’s Word is good news, the Gospel and it has the power to save to the uttermost. So if we really want to see change come then we must take God at His Word and walk by faith and not by sight. Because if we only believe in what we see in our world today we are in some serious trouble. We need to be the example of faith by our action and put forth that faith in a Living God who is able to do far more than what we are able to even think or ask. PRAY!

By Jim Clingman Those of you who are my age will remember the house parties in our parents’ basements with the blue and red lights. Whether boy or girl, although you were reluctant to ask or too shy to accept that slow dance with someone you considered special, when the moment finally came and the two of you embraced each other, that dance was the most you could ask for in your teen aged years. Unfortunately, that dance was usually at the bewitching hour when your parents said everyone had to go home. You finally got the nerve to do it, and then it had to end—you had to let go. That’s what I feel as I work my way through this final Blackonomics article. Since the age of 24 or so, after I visited the Topographical Center in Chicago during the late 1960’s, I finally found the consciousness I needed to do something in response to what was happening in this nation vis-à-vis Black people. I began to speak out and do whatever I could to ameliorate our problems on a local level. From 1972 until 2012, I earned my living by working for Black administrators and business owners, on behalf of Black people, in the public and private sectors. My much-anticipated dance began forty-five years ago, and I have embraced my dance partner, the uplift of Black people, ever since. In 1993, after writing a letter to the Editor of the Cincinnati Herald, I started this particular dance by embracing the opportunity to write on a weekly basis. Now, nearly 25 years later, the houselights have been turned on, drowning out the blue lights, and it’s time to let go of my dance partner. But she was never mine to keep anyway; someone danced with her before me and someone will dance with her after me. Yes, after authoring some 1500 articles, editorials, and essays, and writing nine books, five of which on economic empowerment, giving hundreds of speeches and teaching numerous classes across this country, there is probably not much more I can say on empowerment. Moreover, as I suggested, the message was never my own—it was just in a different form, relative to my time and experiences. The economic empowerment message belongs to no one person; it is not new and it certainly is not unique or proprietary to anyone of us who chose to spread that particular “gospel.” It was touted by the likes of Maria Stewart and Frederick Douglass, Mary McLeod Bethune and Booker T. Washington, Ida B. Wells and Marcus Garvey, Maggie Lena Walker and Malcolm X, Amos Wilson, Carter G. Woodson, Kenneth Bridges, and Maynard Jackson. Contemporaries, along with myself, are now the messengers for
economic empowerment. Same message, different griots. No one has all the answers and no one alone can take us where we must go; a critical mass of us must go together, based on collective leverage, cooperation, and strength. Like those before me, I am leaving a compendium of writings on economic empowerment that will be catalogued and available, via streaming, for study groups and individuals to read and use in building a solid foundation for future generations. Like others before me, the lessons I have learned will be there for developing and executing solution-based strategies. The question is: “Will they be followed, or merely discussed, ad nauseam, by the folks who believe that by talking about our problems they have actually ‘done’ something to solve them?” Based on our errant history since 1964, I pray we will act appropriately by using the knowledge left to us by our progenitors. Here are a few ways to do that: Raise our consciousness to a level of “unconscious competency” Leverage our dollars and our votes against injustice and inequity by withdrawing them Use our consumer dollars to create conscious Black millionaires Establish more viable, professional, well-managed businesses, and support them Establish trusts, equity funds, revolving loan programs, and endowments Form strategic business alliances and partnerships that can take on larger projects Scale up our businesses to provide more jobs for Black people Teach our youth the history of Black business in this country Teach our young people to think entrepreneurially Demand reciprocity from politicians and the marketplace, from a position of economic strength Vote for those who publicly state and commit in writing their support for our interests Withhold our votes from anyone and any party that will not support our interests Hold ourselves accountable for our own economic freedom Organize ourselves around practical economic and political solutions that benefit US Commit some of our time, talent, and treasure to the uplift of our people Always remember: “Well done beats well said every time, and if people put you on a pedestal, don’t take up residence there.” Peace and Love to all. Trump Tries To Divide Us, But We Are Better Nation Than That By Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. When Colin Kaepernick first took a knee during the national anthem last year, he acted alone, a silent protest against a society that repeatedly fails to hold police accountable for the killing of unarmed African Americans. Kaepernick was condemned and now essentially has been banned from the NFL, with the owners surely colluding to ensure that a quarterback of immense talent would not find a place among the dozens of teams desperately in need of one. Kaepernick is alone no longer. After Donald Trump’s ugly outbursts and tweets — he called Kaepernick and other protestors a “son of a b—-,” urged the NFL owners to kick out any player with the courage to protest and, bizarrely, condemned rule changes designed to provide some protection against concussions — players and even owners across the NFL reacted. Teams linked arms on the sidelines during the anthem, some kneeling and others not, unified in protest of Trump’s divisive rants and tweets. The Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and all but one of the Pittsburgh Steelers chose to stay in their locker rooms when the anthem was played. They stood together to defend the right of their teammates to express themselves, whether they agreed with those views or not. They stood together to show that they are citizens, not chattel. They are skilled athletes practicing their profession, not chained slave gladiators forced to entertain the mob. Every athlete knows that expressing controversial views publicly is a harsh risk. Their careers are short; their contracts are not guaranteed. The owners are billionaires, dependent on public subsidy, fearful of any controversy. They are clearly prepared, as they did with Kaepernick, to punish independence. Yet dozens of athletes responded to Trump’s jibes by joining the protest, and their teammates stood arm-in-arm defending their right to do so. Trump thinks the NFL is a plantation. The players showed the real patriotism that the flag truly represents. For Trump, the assault on protesting black athletes — he also tweeted his withdrawal of an invitation to Stephen Cur-
ry and the Golden State Warriors to visit the White House after Curry expressed reservations about the president — is a classic diversion. He has terrified the country with his blustery, schoolyard insults to a North Korean leader armed with nuclear weapons. His efforts to dismember basic health care are failing despite lies and bribes. Hurricanes and wildfires are mocking his inane denial of climate change. His embrace of the “fine people” in the neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, Va., alarmed decent people across the country. After eight months in office, he has the lowest approval ratings of any president since polls were invented. Black athletes — many of them millionaires — make a perfect foil. How dare they protest when they have been “given” so much? Much of Trump’s base already thinks minorities enjoy special privileges. Going after black athletes simply stokes their anger and resentment, while masking Trump’s myriad failures and betrayals. Kaepernick took his knee to protest the criminal police killing of African Americans. This year to date, the Washington Post reports that 10 unarmed African Americans, and 32 unarmed people in total, have been fatally shot by the police in the United States. St. Louis has been shaken by days of protests after the acquittal of a police officer who shot an 24-yearold African-American after a car chase. Trump has fueled this conflagration. Police chiefs rebuked him when he urged police to feel free to rough up suspects. His Department of Justice has told prosecutors to seek maximum sentences, adding to mass incarceration that shames this nation. His DOJ has also scorned the consent agreements that Obama’s Justice Department forged to reform racially biased police departments. Kaepernick and the players taking a knee have ever more reasons to do so. The stern visage of Dr. Martin Luther King now graces the national mall. America has come a long way since he left us. We are a more diverse nation. Segregation is no more. We still need leaders and citizens who will work to bring us together, to reform biased institutional practices, to rededicate ourselves to fulfilling Dr. King’s dream. Sadly, in the White House, this president has chosen, purposefully and with malice, to drive us apart to serve his own political ends. The protests of the NFL players this weekend show that we are a better nation than that.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY NEWS Grant Offers Historic Opportunity For Educational Equity And Quality In Battle Creek Public Schools BATTLE CREEK, Mich., PRNewswireUSNewswire/ -- The W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF) recently announced an unprecedented commitment to strengthen Battle Creek Public Schools (BCPS) so all students have access to a quality education to ensure their academic success. The five-year $51 million investment will provide a comprehensive approach to impact every grade and every building in the district. Garcetti Mobilizes Community Leaders To Fight Homelessness LOS ANGELES — To help guide neighborhood-based efforts to end homelessness and build on his Days of Compassion movement, Mayor Eric Garcetti today convened more than 300 neighborhood council members, homelessness liaisons, business leaders, and City commissioners to connect them with service providers on the frontlines of the crisis. As part of the Engage L.A. event hosted at Getty House, representatives of organizations including Lava Mae, Chrysalis, Downtown Women’s Center, and Wesley Health Center answered questions on how to support local efforts to guide homeless Angelenos to services and housing, transform empty lots into safe parking sites, and build temporary, modular shelters. “The fight to end homelessness is everyone’s fight,” said Mayor Garcetti. “No single entity — government, philanthropy, or the private sector — can solve the crisis alone, but together we can empower communities to make meaningful, lasting change. We need to keep creating new ways to pull Angelenos together around the idea that everyone deserves to live in safety and with dig-
nity.”
To support this work, the Mayor’s office has launched a Days of Compassion website to help Angelenos organize, donate, and explore the possibility of using underutilized properties as future sites for permanent supportive housing and access points for services. The Mayor also encouraged attendees to utilize his Housing Resource Matchmaker, a system to link the skills and resources of Angelenos with high-capacity, mission-driven builders and service providers. For example, a landlord interested in renting to homeless veterans might be paired with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles (HACLA), which provides veterans with rental assistance in the private market. A church with a parking lot could be partnered with permanent supportive housing developers who have the expertise and experience to help convert the lot into permanent housing for the homeless. According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority annual Point-in-Time Count, overall homelessness in the City of Los Angeles increased by 20% from 2016 to 34,189 people.

"BCPS serves many of the students and neighborhoods in Battle Creek with the lowest access to these resources and overcoming these gaps requires bold action." Tabron said Battle Creek is witnessing historic times. Last month all four area school boards came together in a historic joint meeting to talk about the NYU study and begin a conversation about how they can address the inequities in education across the community. "These are bold and courageous efforts because the work ahead will be hard and at times messy. But this work is so important and it needs all of us," Tabron said. "It is our responsibility as a community to stand with our children so they can thrive. I'm proud to do that today and I encourage every one in Battle Creek – and outside of Battle Creek - to find their role in this work ahead." Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder applauded the foundation and district's partnership. "All children deserve and should have access to a quality education in their community. As a native of Battle Creek I am proud of how the foundation and the greater com-
munity are wrapping their arms around its children to ensure their success," he said. NATIONAL & WORLD NEWS Lawmakers Seek End to Triple-Digit Interest on Payday and Car-Title Loans By Charlene Crowell (Communication Director, Center for Responsible Lending) A group of Capitol Hill lawmakers are combining efforts and influence to legislatively crack down on predatory lending, nationwide. Seventeen Members of the U.S. House and eight U.S. Senators are supporting companion bills that would slash the cost of payday and car-title loans from their typical 300 percent annual interest rate to no more than 36 percent—the same rate protection that Congress first provided military families in 2006. Today, 90 million Americans living in 15 states and D.C. benefit from enacted rate caps of 36 percent or lower. But in the other 35 states, residents remain vulnerable to triple-digit interest rates that average 400 percent nationwide on an average loan of only $350. When consumers use their car titles as collateral for a larger and equally costly loan, a loss of personal transportation occurs when borrowers can no longer keep up with the spiraling high costs. If enacted, the legislation is expected to have an immediate impact on payday and car-title loans, but would ensure that all consumer financial services would end
cycles of debt that trick and trap unsuspecting consumers into long-term debt. The bicameral effort is led in the U.S. Senate by Senators Dick Durbin of Illinois and Jeff Merkley of Oregon.
