I

t’s Spring and that means it’s wedding season! Each year at Pacific Island Living we put together a wedding feature full of reviews, tips and trends for the coming year. Weddings are big business in the Pacific, with many couples from Australia and New Zealand choosing to forego the expense, and I might suggest, lack of intimacy weddings at home can bring. Our 16-page wedding feature starts on page 34 and it includes Olivia Waugh’s collection of resort style wedding attire and gifts and Georgie Gordon’s tips on keeping the magic alive long after the honeymoon. Our resident foodie Christiana Kalucha has also put together recipes for great cocktails and canapes you can make at home. We also feature holiday destinations Savai’i (Samoa’s big island), diving in Solomon Islands and a new destination guide for Vanuatu. But the pick of all our destinations this issue (and there are plenty) would have to be Vomo in Fiji. My all too brief stay at Vomo is up there with the best, thanks to their enviable service, location, food and fun. Read about it on pages 14-17. If you’d like to get in touch, please follow us on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, or visit us online at www.pacificislandliving.com Happy reading.

Book look:

Wedding Words

Georgie Gordon takes up an invitation to several weddings ... well on paper at least. THE SHIP OF BRIDES by Jojo Moyes Jo Jo Moyes charming The Ship of Brides is based on the actual event of 1946 when recently wed women travelled aboard a naval ship from Australia to England to be re-united with their husbands after the war. The story begins in Sydney with four women joining 650 other brides and 1000 naval officers (not their husbands) aboard the HMS Victoria. Rules of honour and duty are enforced by the captain however the men and brides find their lives intertwined in ways they never imagined.

THE WEDDING by Nicholas Spark The Wedding is Nicholas Sparks sequel to the hugely successful book (and film) The Notebook, it sees Wilson, after thirty years of marriage try to re-kindle the spark in his relationship with Jane. His daughter’s impending wedding highlights all that is wrong in his own marriage and with the magnificent fifty-year love affair of his in-laws, Allie and Noah, as his guide he sets out to win back the heart of his wife. Fans of Sparks won’t be disappointed by this poignant and moving story.

THE PARIS WEDDING by Charlotte Nash Ten years ago Rachael’s childhood sweetheart, Matthew, moved to the city leaving her behind to care to for her sick mother. Now Matthew is getting married and Rachael is invited to his lavish wedding in Paris. On the eve of the wedding Rachael is faced with an impossible dilemma – should she give up on love, or destroy another woman’s chance of happiness? A love letter to the city of lights and a hopelessly romantic story, The Paris Wedding is a dreamy tale about love lost and found.

THE ITALIAN WEDDING by Nicky Pellegrino Nicky Pellegrino has a habit of setting her books in wonderful destinations and The Italian Wedding is no exception. Be transported between London, Rome and a small Italian village as the Martinelli family prepares for Addolorata’s wedding. As her sister Pieta makes the bride’s gown she discovers the man she loves is marrying someone else. Family secrets are uncovered, feuds are fuelled and happiness is precariously threatened in this captivating book that is as much about food and family as it is about love.

COMMITTED by Elizabeth Gilbert Committed is a sequel of sorts to Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling memoir Eat, Pray, Love. Having met and fallen in love with Filipe, the Brazilian-born man she met in Bali, the couple agree to be together forever but swear off marriage (both having already been through difficult divorces) until Fillipe isn’t allowed to enter and live in America with Elizabeth that is. With her forced wedding looming the author delves into the subject, analysing the institution of marriage with her signature warmth, emotional intelligence and wit.

SAVE THE DATE by Jen Doll Save The Date: The Occasional Mortifications of a Serial Wedding Guest is journalist and author Jen Doll’s memoir about the weddings she has attended. From the first one she remembers as a child to the one where she missed catching the bouquet, Doll is disarmingly honest about her thoughts on happily after, all the while hilariously charting her tales of wedding misadventures. Through her musings on different weddings and the unions they are binding, Doll delivers an engaging read about contemporary relationships. A Few Of My Favourite Things The unofficial mayor of Suva, Pete Ovenden, a busy family man, somehow manages to run successful businesses, and find time to collect things all around the Pacific. Here are a few of his favourites.

T

here are lots of wonderful things about living in the pacific – I have chosen the following items as they represent memories and experiences that resonate. The first is a walking stick with a bone handle that I picked up in the highlands of PNG. (I am not exactly sure what type of bone), however the walking stick is clearly for someone of stature. The next is an old wash basin filled with shells that my family and I have collected from right across the Pacific. More than half the shells come from islands across our home of Fiji. As a family we are selective with what is allowed to be added to the collection. I bought the panama hat in Sydney to use when I am home in Fiji. The wide brim

12 | Islandliving pacific

makes perfect sense in the warm tropical climate. It is light and airy and travels with me everywhere. Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right sundowner, helping make the memories of the pacific is Fiji Coconut Vodka. We make this vodka in Suva from coconut sourced on Vanua Levu. Hand selected, the taste of this drink is sublime. My second home, the Royal Suva Yacht Club where we spend many hours sailing and catching up with friends. And finally, my family. This shot was taken in the northern Yasawas after a wonderful day spent with great friends. It captures the four of us at a candid moment and will be treasured memory of the Pacific for ever.

Welcome Home esort R d n a l s I Vomo

Tiffany Carroll goes ‘home’ to Vomo where nothing is too much trouble and the word ‘no’ is not in their vocabularly. Blissful!

Understated luxury “When we arrive, our staff will be waiting to greet you with a traditional welcome song,” the boat captain tells me. “They will finish with a loud ‘BULA!” You must say “BULA!” even louder back, or we won’t let you in,” he winks. The boat transfer arrives at Vomo’s watersports hut, there’s a young family playing on the water’s edge, the beach is pure white sand and the water is a gorgeous aquamarine. But there’s no grand entry, no foyer and not many people around. “Welcome home,” someone says and I look up to see a big friendly Fijian man waiting to greet us. “Just leave your things here – you’re home. We’ll take care of the rest.” After washing the sand from our feet we’re guided along some stepping stones to a mini bus hidden behind the lush green garden.

14 | Islandliving pacific

The repeat visitor rate at Vomo is 84% and I immediately wonder what keeps people coming back to this island. Sure, on first appearances it’s beautiful; the beaches are lovely, the restaurant and pool area relaxed, but it’s just another Pacific island resort, surely? Simply, no, it’s not. Vomo is an extension of your home in so much as you can do whatever you please, however whatever you please is made so easy for you, without realising it, you’re having the most relaxing holiday of your life. For those traveling with children there are Baby Butlers. For those wanting a bit more adventure there’s the watersports team, for those wanting to enjoy Michelin-quality meals, there’s chef Nicholas Samaras and his team to ensure any dietary requirement, any craving is met.

The big Bula welcome I don’t know where our bags are and there’s not a lot of fanfare. We hop in the bus and are driven a short distance down a path and arrive at the main house. The promised welcome is already in full song before we get out of the bus and the general manager walks up to greet us. “Welcome home,” he says. The song finishes and the staff look at each other then loudly shout “BULA!” We immediately return the gesture and everyone laughs. Mark Leslie has been at the helm at Vomo for around five years and I would learn over the coming days, he’s one of the short term staff.

The welome home message is genuine – Mark calls Vomo an extension of your own home and he means it. “I hate the word no. I don’t want to hear it and neither do our guests. “If you want to eat at the beach, if you want to picnic on a neighbouring island, if you want to watch a movie, the answer will always be yes at Vomo.” There’s no paperwork on arrival but I suspect there’s quite a bit in anticipation of all new arrivals. Every staff member knows your name and even for first time visitors, you feel as though you have been here before. islandliving | 15 pacific

5 star hospitality You want a massage? Easy – the team is lead by the former spa manager of the Four Seasons in Bali. After our welcome song and coconut drink on arrival we’re lead to our beachfront bure. Our bags are already there and I still can’t work out how they got from the boat in the first place. I would come to ask myself similar questions throughout my stay. “I was just thinking the sun is a bit strong and all of a sudden here is a pool attendant moving my umbrella. Where did he come from?” This is what sets Vomo apart – the resort has 32 bures and four residences and is often 100% full – but it never feels so. The staff know when to leave you alone and when to offer a drink, a smile, a new towel or advice on what to do next.

Our first afternoon is spent snorkeling around Vomo’s reefs. Wise, the boat captain has been at Vomo for 21 years and he is shocked when I asked if he’d ever consider working elsewhere. ‘No! Why would I? This is home. The owners are family, the guests are family, plus I’m wise – so they need me,” he giggles. Wise (his real name) is one of many long term staff at Vomo. Some have been there so long they recall making milkshakes for guests they are now serving cocktails to as adults. “The staff know some of our guests so well they genuinely feel like family,”

16 | Islandliving pacific

assistant manager Jacques Louw says. The snorkeling is beautiful and the guides so keen to point out fish and coral unique to the area you can’t help but feel their passion for the resort as well. After an hour or so we return to the resort and are met by Marilyn Sivo, one of the front ‘office’ staff. “If you feel like it, how about a drink at the Rocks Bar at 5.30? It is a spectacular sunset up there,” she suggests. And it sounds perfect to me. “How do I get there?” I ask. “Oh, you either come to the front desk and we’ll drive you or you follow the path

Island Escape

Privacy assured behind your bure,” she says. And again I’m struck by the privacy, the intimacy of Vomo. I didn’t even notice the path behind our bure. In defiance of 2016’s Cyclone Winston, Vomo’s gardens are mature and elegant. Again, as is the theme at Vomo, they’re not formal, rather understated and loved. The Rocks Bar and soon to be opened adults-only pool and restaurant area offer another dimension to Vomo. Whilst the resorts caters to families, the Vomo team felt an adults-only retreat would offer another level of comfort and privacy to adults.

The view, as promised is spectacular and the bar area just oozes charm and again, that understated luxury. Superlatives fail me as I think I could spend all day here, watching the dramatic landscape that is the Mamanuca islands, being waited on by discreet yet always available Vomo staff and enjoying delicious cocktails created by F&B Manager Andrew Clarke. But alas, dinner awaits and after a shared bottle of Billecart Salmon, we’re whisked away to dinner. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the room tariff at Vomo, with an extensive à la carte menu

which changes daily, guests never leave hungry. Younger guests may dine with their family, or in the kids’ village nearby. Either way, the expansive grounds and facilities at Vomo ensure your meals are never interrupted. Vomo’s enviable accommodation includes 32 beachfront and hillside villas, all with large verandahs, deep tubs, separate showers, L’Occitane products, luxury king size or twin beds, WiFi, walk-in robes, patio or sun lounge furniture and a sofa. For those wanting total privacy, there are four residences, with three or four bedrooms, private pools, full

kitchens and a butler. Guests here can have their meals prepared at home, delivered from the Vomo kitchen or dine in the restaurant. Vomo’s Kui spa is staffed by Balinese therapists and often booked out days in advance. The spa is a stroll away from the bures and residences, near the island’s golf course. And if eating, snorkeling, diving, swimming and lounging is not your thing, there’s also a fully equipment gym and 100 acres to explore. Rates at Vomo start at $FJD2375 per bure, per night.

Weekend

Retreat To Savai’i With only two days to recharge her flat batteries before embarking on an action packed trip to the capital, Apia, Danielle Norton retreats to Savai’i, Samoa’s larger yet less populated, island paradise.

18 | Islandliving pacific

Be seduced by the Samoan way of life - Fa’a Samoa. Resorts range from basic to luxury on the big island of Savai’i.

O

n a pleasant day, the ninety-minute ferry ride from Mulifanua Wharf to Savai’i is calm enough to lull the unsuspecting passenger to sleep but legend has it that a rough crossing is something no one wants to experience. On Savai’i, tourists can stay at luxury hotels with spas and air conditioning, but it doesn’t take long for a visitor to be seduced by fa’a Samoa (the Samoan way of life). Pigs forage by the lush roadside, chickens peck at tasty scraps and people walk together going about their daily activities, chatting and laughing. Daily life is a little bit slower and a lot more beautiful. Everyone lives in close proximity to the glorious, sparkling water’s edge. The villages cluster around the larger central fales, thatched halls without walls, meeting places in which the community’s men gather to ‘support’ their people. My cab driver explained: “Sometimes, if the men drink too much, they need help”. This is a marvellous example of how the village family takes responsibility for its members, a theme repeated in many conversations I had with Samoans during this weekend. The waiter at my hotel, Seti, was a knowledgeable and well-respected, retired schoolteacher who had always planned to move to New Zealand when his career ended. However, he’d stayed to ‘help out’ a relative who owned the hotel.

White sand beaches abound on Savai’i, but the stunning and dramatic landscape changes every few kilometres, from the lava fields to villages, beaches to markets and as are everywhere in Samoa, beautiful churches.

islandliving | 19 pacific

Le Lagoto resort (above) offers quality accommodation on Savai’i island.

Here, in this island paradise, it really does seem that the proverb is true; ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. Also true for Samoans is that each person has a future responsibility to the village which raised them. A man enjoying a beer in the hotel bar shared that he was working on the set of Survivor. He had been raised in a fairly basic village, and had felt compelled to come home after 10 years away in Auckland, to help his mother care for a father suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. His five siblings sent money to the family but this talented and celebrated graphic designer was back living a modest life and contributing his strength and wisdom to the village of his childhood. For the tourist, no such obligations exist. Savai’i is a paradise which ranges from the ‘authentic Pacific Island’ experience to the luxury hotel and spa. The former is a beachside fale, sleeping on a mattress, covered with a mosquito net at night and waking to the sight of the endless Pacific Ocean every morning, the latter, excellent restaurants with international standard food and poolside cocktail bars which satisfy every traveller’s island fantasy.

At Le Lagoto Resort and Spa the ocean view beach hut is simple, with crisp linen, a TV and functional bathroom. The real hero of the room is outside of it. Deliciously inviting water is just a few metres from your door, when and if you feel that you can drag yourself up from the stylish sunning lounge to go for a swim. There’s a protected little cove, perfect for young children, overlooked by the restaurant where parents can observe their antics with a refreshing coconut juice or cocktail in hand. Kayaks are also available for guests to use and their lure is impossible to resist. To paddle the Pacific Ocean as the sun sets majestically behind you is only one of the romantic treats that awaits you at this resort. The spa offers couples massages in an open air room right on the water’s edge but really it is the chance to relax in the company of your loved one that makes this resort so special. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, they are friendly and welcoming and make your stay worry-free. The lovely Gabriella is always happy to help visitors to organise outings. A driver can do full or half day tours of the island encompassing many of the main tourist attractions for approximately T150 or T300.

Snorkel, dive, pamper. Savai’i offers travelers an escape from the everyday.

It is an amazing fact that in a country with a population of 180,000 there are approximately 1200 churches. Religion is very important to the Samoan people with Sunday still an official day of rest. Tours don’t operate and shops are closed. It was enforced rest time for me, in one of the most serene natural environments in the world so no complaints from me about the lack of services! I spent the day practising yoga, mindfulness and gratitude. It was easy to do as I sat on a huge round lounge, gazing out to the Pacific Ocean from another tropical paradise. I was lured to Samoa by the promise of beautiful ocean swimming, verdant jungles with waterfalls and swimming holes and luscious looking islander men and I wasn’t disappointed on any count. As I pushed myself through each pose of my yoga routine, I inhaled the warm tropical scents and exhaled happiness, and wonder. The delights of this island were invigorating for me. Savai’i had worked its magic on me in only two days. For those who need a little lightness, visit this paradise and rediscover your inner child.

Culture Shock

Lost In Translation Foxtel presenter Rosie Jacobs discovers the magic of her new island home’s lingo.

I

t’s no secret the culture of Vanuatu is unique. Some call it ‘island time’ others call it ‘coconut culture’ but whatever you call it, it’s the reason we moved here from Australia with our two young daughters six months ago, in search of a happier existence and it’s 100 per cent the reason why we adore this spectacular gem of the South Pacific. The pace is slower. The laughter is genuine. The meanings are literal. Some of the incidences however, we have witnessed personally or have heard of from our new friends have left my husband Steven and I gobsmacked, doubled-over laughing and far wiser now to the ways of life on this divine and magical island. And it’s all to do with the ways of communication. Let’s just say we are learning fast! Here’s a handful of recent experiences that have shed some light on island-style communication in the South pacific. X Marks The Spot The first moment we encountered was when we needed to have a couple of old trees cleared from our block of land that were badly damaged by Cyclone Pam. We marked said trees with a

28 | Islandliving pacific

large fluorescent pink cross to clearly indicate the trees that needed chain-sawing by the men we had hired for the job and we then left for the day to celebrate our daughter’s sixth birthday party at a nearby resort. During the party we mentioned to a friend about our trees, at which point his eyes widened and he said “oh no, you didn’t hear what happed to Jimmy down the road! Jim marked all his dead trees with a cross but to a local gardener here, that means “tabu, don’t touch! So they cut down every other tree on the block!” Let’s just say, we couldn’t get home fast enough. Thankfully, that our amazing gardeners had chosen the right trees and had done a spectacular job clearing the block for us. Phew! Burn It All If you ever find yourself with a large stack of green rubbish that needs to be burned, then learn this lesson well. A friend loaded his twin cab ute with all the waste he needed to be cleared and burned and asked his gardeners to take it all and burn it. “Get rid of it all”. When the gardeners returned without the ute,

he quickly learned he had forgotten to mention to burn it all, except the ute! Stop It! Our mate Adam was unfortunately in a recent car accident. But the matter of fault was a definite issue. In Adam’s eyes, he had been side-swiped by the other driver. The other driver however, was adamant that Adam had failed to stop at a stop sign. Needless to say, Adam was a little confused when he said “What stop sign?” And the other driver motioned to a concrete hole in the ground and said “That one!” It turns out that prior to Cyclone Pam there had in fact been a stop sign in the ground but it was yet to be replaced. Every local driver knew the stop sign rules still existed, unless of course, you were new to the region and didn’t realise that the concrete hole was still officially a legal road rule! Serve It Up Margaret was having a dinner party at her house. She had early on decided she wanted everything to be super casual, no formalities at all, so conversation would flow. However she hired a

couple of ladies to help with the food preparation so she could enjoy her night with her friends. She kindly asked the ladies not to bring the food through the kitchen doors to the table, but simply to serve it through the servery window. It was half way through the evening when the meals were ready and Margaret was surprised to see one of the ladies attempting to climb through the servery window with a plate in hand! The ladies of course erupted in raucous laughter along with the guests once the verbal error had been properly explained. And this, in my view, is a wonderful example of cultures combining. So the moral of the story? Well in my view, as with any new country a person moves to, it’s your job to learn and appreciate the beauty of your new and mysterious land, because after all, that’s why you have chosen to relocate. And this most certainly includes understanding the various forms of communication. If you can’t understand it, then come armed with a wicked sense of humour… and until you feel confident that you have a firm grip, then make sure your insurance is up to date! Rosie x

I

n these days of Instagram, Photoshop, ComputerGenerated Imagery (CGI) and any number of apps that are designed to enhance, improve, re-purpose and deceive, it’s no longer a case of ‘seeing is believing’. All of us know those movies with dinosaurs roaming the primordial plains are digitally created because there are no longer any T-Rexs or rapetosaurus to teach acting skills to but forget palaeontology, almost all movies are now digitally enhanced. Indeed the Oscar for the best visual effects this year went to Jungle Book which featured a single live human, Neel Sethi the child actor who play Mowgli, among a cast of characters created by computers. Real estate agents and architects rely on CGI to sell nonexistent buildings and apartments, car designers pore over 360-degree digital images of their proposed new models and shoe designers sell digital images of this year’s new sneaker or trainer to fashion buyers. Everything is pixel-perfect now and maybe only virtually real. But what has made all this possible is also responsible for

an art form in itself. Digital art in still or video versions has, since the 1970s, been increasingly seen as legitimate art. The impact of digital technology has transformed everything from painting and photography to sculpture and music whereby the merging of graphic design and fine art techniques are used to create stunning images and installations. Algorithmic art is popping up on everything from prints-oncanvas to t-shirts to gallery walls and building facades. The fractal and fantastic is so much a part of our everyday life that it now goes almost unnoticed unless the image is beyond rational comprehension or the known limits of photography, which in itself is now almost entirely digital apart from some quaint retro film cameras which reproduce Polaroid-like effects for aficionados of old ‘instant’ pictures and celluloid buffs. The core images in digital art can be generated from original scanned photographs, or raster and vector graphics which are computer-generated, through to fractals which are algorithmic. They can then be modified using specifically designed computer programs much in the way that digital painting

is used to create realistic traditional artwork on canvas. Predictably, Andy Warhol was an early exponent when in 1985 he digitally manipulated an image of Debbie Harry on a Commodore Amiga computer using a program called ProPaint. Subsequently there have been exhibitions dedicated to 3D animated imagery, digital installations involving projections and live video capture, immersive virtual reality productions, musical visualisation and even digital poetry! There are entire art festivals devoted to ‘electronic art’ which is often interactive and makes use of robotics, wearable technology and digital painting; the only problem seems to be preservation. As the technology used to create many of these works becomes obsolete how are they to be stored and exhibited in the future if the means of viewing them has disappeared, not quite like putting a Rembrandt in the back room and taking another look in a few centuries. But hey, a lot of it is fun and you can have go at home or on your smartphone, so it’s the art of the people, and where would Instagram be without a bit of digital manipulation?

Beauty Spot

Beauty’s Big Guns Chemical peel

For the treatment of blemishes, wrinkles, stretch marks and uneven skin pigmentation a chemical peel is a relatively uninvasive option for noticeable results. The skin is re-surfaced with the application of alpha hydroxyl acids, by effectively removing the outer layers of skin. Pain Factor Minimal Down Time: The treatment takes under an hour. Side effects of a light chemical peel include redness, stinging and crusting of the skin which usually subsides in a couple of days. Results Immediate results from a light chemical peel include a smoother, more even complexion.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is treatment that exfoliates and refreshes the skin using a spray of microcrystals to remove dry, dead skin and reveal the healthier looking skin underneath. A nonchemical, non-invasive procedure improves skin imperfections like acne, clogged pores and uneven pigmentation. Pain Factor Minimal discomfort Down Time None, this is considered a ‘lunch hour’ procedure as in it is quick and you can go straight back to work. Results Like most treatments results improve over time with repeat treatments but skin looks fresher and brighter after just one treatment.

Needling or fractional mesotherapy

Mesotherapy is the introduction of vitamins and complex ingredients to the skin via injection, combined with micro needling you have fractional mesotherapy – a double pronged approach in which medical grade stainless steel needles pierce the skin, stimulating collagen production while delivering topical treatments. This treatment is otherwise known as needling, which sounds more alarming than it is. Pain Factor Mildly painful, numbing cream is usually used to help with the discomfort. Down Time You’ll need a few hours and there may be some minor redness for a day or two. Results a visible decrease in the appearance of wrinkle, pigmentation, sun damage, acne, enlarged pores and scarring with ongoing treatments.

56 | Islandliving pacific

Light therapy

LED light therapy was originally developed to help heal wounds and scars after surgery as it kick starts cells into producing collagen and elastin – both essential for youthful looking skin. There are two types of light therapy – red and blue, red works wonders on wrinkles and blue is great for scarring. Light treatment is usually offered as part of a facial, after exfoliation and before hydration for optimal results. Pain Factor Zero Down Time Sessions usually last 20 minutes and twice a week for six to eight weeks is recommended. Results The complexion appears plumper (fewer fine lines) and skin appears firmer, it is also great for treating hyper pigmentation (brown sun spots).

Laser therapy

Laser skin resurfacing involves short, concentrated laser beams directed at problem areas to remove the skin layer by layer. Pain Factor Can be severe straight after treatment and moderate during recovery. Down Time Treatment lasts between 30 minutes and two hours under local or general anaesthetic, following the procedure the affected area will be bandaged and there will be swelling. Recovery can take up to two weeks. Results Effective for skin irregularities and acne scars, but not all skin types are suitable so check with your therapist first.

Botox

Botox is an increasingly popular way to get rid of wrinkles, especially those deep ones that congregate on our foreheads and around our eyes. Botox is a toxin that when injected relaxes the facial muscles causing lines to disappear. Side effects include bruising, headaches and in some cases drooping of the eyelids. Where large doses are injected more serious side effects can occur such as trouble swallowing or speaking. Botox usually lasts between three and four months. Pain Factor A manageable pin prick. Down Time The treatment itself is quick and there is no downtime if some minor swelling or bruising is not a concern.

Fillers

Another injectable treatment, a dermal filler is usually hyaluronic acid that is used to ‘fill’ deep folds in the skin, like those between your nose and mouth, or to plump up the face to create a more youthful appearance, in the lips or cheeks for example. Side effects are minimal provided you see a reputable practitioner. Fillers last between six and 12 months. Pain Factor From uncomfortable in the cheek area to quite painful in the lip area. Down Time Treatments are performed in well under an hour, and recovery depends on how much bruising and swelling there is to the affected area.

People & Culture

Solomon Islanders are a blend of mainly Melanesian, Micronesian and Polynesian people with a population of around 550,000. The cultural values stem back thousands of years and are very much linked to the land and surrounding seas. Most of the population still live a subsistence lifestyle where family and village community are the centre of social life.

Solomon Islanders posses many talents particularly in the arts and like many in the Pacific, are blessed with melodic voices and Melanesian island rhythm. From knitting, tie-dying and basket weaving to crafting jewellery from shells or paper, there are beautiful items to purchase to remember your time in the ‘Hapi Isles’. Taking inspiration from the sea, Solomon Islanders craft and carve amazing bowls, statues and wall hangings. The carvers use several types of wood including rosewood, kerosene and queen and king ebony. They delicately set shell inlay for decoration to create beautiful and practical artwork. You can purchase directly from the carver at the Art Gallery. However if you are visiting during the last weekend in the month, Sunday is ‘Art in the Park’ held at Rove playgrounds.

Destination Kiribati

Kiribati s d n a l s i e r u t n e v d a From the air, Kiribati is simply stunning. On the ground, friendly people, a strong culture and pristine water awaits you.

A welcome to Kiribati

The island nation of Kiribati, comprising 33 atolls, straddles the equator, stretching 3235 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean. With traditions and culture thriving and visitors regarded as a curiosity, it is the Pacific of yesteryear. South Tarawa is the urban hub of the nation with a large concentration of the population crammed into rows of houses squeezed together. Land is scarce here, the lagoon suffering under the weight of people, but this is where government and commercial activity is focused, where the hustle and bustle of Kiribati prevails. Venture away from south Tarawa and you escape this commotion, finding the unspoilt tranquillity of north Tarawa. To visit only south Tarawa is to miss the gentler side of Kiribati, the Kiribati where time flows with the moon and tides. Located on Abatao in north Tarawa, our family homestay accommodation is delightful. The road halts abruptly at a passageway between the ocean and lagoon. A prompting whistle and a motorised canoe emerges from across the water to ferry us to the other side. During the new moon, the crossing is magical as phosphorescence lights a trail behind us, swirling round our feet in the water; a step in the wet sand stirs a shower of phosphorescent dust. Our guesthouse looks over the lagoon. A raised floor, roof of pandanus leaves and a mattress. Woven palm shutters keep out the rain, the lagoon breeze provides natural air conditioning! Home for a while. Privacy is pretty much nonexistent but it all adds to the Kiribati charm. It is quite normal to wake up, see several pairs of eyes staring back from beyond our feet, hear a shy ‘Mauri’ and

72 | Islandliving pacific

then children running away giggling! The bathroom is shared and the toilet has built in entertainment as hermit crabs scurry around our feet. Meals are local food; pancakes made with ‘toddy’ served with coconut syrup; fish, rice, breadfruit, pandanus and coconut. Sunset over the lagoon is spectacular with a ball of fire resting on the horizon, the sky blazing with shades of orange, red, pink, purple. Serenity – apart from the lapping of the water on the lagoon edge and the distant crashing of waves on the ocean side. A receding evening tide brings fishermen into the lagoon, wading the shallows with the a lamp, trailing a fishing net between them or slowly drifting in a canoe to catch the next meal. In the dark of the night, tiny lights shine out in the middle of the lagoon. Beyond the homestay, the village and North Tarawa stretch out. Traditional houses cluster together, a school, church, and a small shop, little else. Children line the street as we pass, quietly whispering or boldly shouting ‘I-Matang’ (foreigner) before running away. Others crowd round in friendly curiosity, following until we reach the edge of the village or they lose interest. Beyond the village houses are sparsely spread along the track. I-Kiribati sit talking or carrying out daily chores; men climb trees for toddy; women sit weaving mats; children play, patiently practising skills passed down to them. There is no need here for TV or fancy toys – the children seem content with what their imagination and natural environment provide. Calm and tranquillity reign. by Vanessa Nuttall.

We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to dining options in the Pacific. From Vanuatu’s famed overwater dining and beachfront restaurants to a surprisingly good food court in Suva and colonial dining in Samoa, you won’t run out of options says Rebecca Worsp.

Hideaway Island, Vanuatu

Hideaway Island Resort in Vanuatu is one of those iconic South Pacific island retreats. The small island is surrounded by a marine sanctuary and is known for its excellent diving and snorkeling. However to repeat guests and visitors, it’s also known for its food. Hideaway’s beach bar and restaurant is a casual ‘toes in the sand’ venue overlooking beautiful coral reefs and crystal clear tropical water. The menu features fresh local cuisine and a range of wraps, burgers and salads at lunchtime. In the evening, the restaurant steps it up a notch with Vanuatu’s famed beef on offer, as well as fresh seafood, pastas and pizzas, but it’s the coconut curry everyone returns for. Hideaway Island Resort is just a 15-minute drive from downtown Port Vila, with a free ferry operating 24 hours a day. A great place to take the kids for a snorkel and laid back lunch or a romantic beachside dinner.

Holiday Inn, Suva

The Holiday Inn is one of Suva’s longest standing institutions, famed for Friday afternoon drinks and one of the best breakfasts in town. The restaurant is frequented by not only in house guests, but local residents as well. Culinary director, Philippe Garand has been at Holiday Inn for eight years, he’s charged with managing the busy restaurant team and ensuring Holiday Inn’s drinks, dining and entertaining experience is consistently good – and it must be, as it’s consistently busy. Holiday Inn work with selected farmers in Suva to ensure the majority of what guests receive if sourced locally, the benefits of which include not only the freshest ingredients but also proifts flowing through to local communities. Philippe visits the markets most days at 5 am to ensure Holiday Inn gets the pick of the bunch. Join the locals for breakfast, lunch or dinner seven days a week.

Sheraton Aggie Grey’s Hotel Located in the centre of Apia, this inviting retreat has an air of Raffles about it. The colonial-style architecture is matched by gorgeous furniture inside. Start your day with coffee and a croissant from the Lobby lounge. Revel in all-day dinning at Feast. Be enchanted on Wednesday nights by the Sheraton’s signature cultural celebration (Fiafia Show) with fire dancing (Siva Afi). The Terrace (left) is perfect for a relaxing lunch or dinner or perhaps to sip a cocktail under the cooling fans. With four meeting spaces, this luxurious hotel is the perfect venue for meetings and events in Samoa. There is a wide range of function rooms to cater to smaller meetings for 2-10 executives or high-profile conferences and incentive trips for up to 500 guests.

Cafe du Village, Port Vila

Since new owner Simon Troman took the reigns over a year ago, this Mediterranean-style Port Vila institution which has enjoyed pride of place on the harbourfront opposite Iririki Island for many years has become one of Port Vila’s best dining experiences. The location is stunning with an absolute waterfront position which also serves as a wharf from which the Meridian sunset cruise departs each evening. The menu retains a number of old favourites including the entrée seafood chowder with crusty bread, there’s also a Spanish seafood soup with aioli and garlic toast and a few Asian goodies too, like pork and prawn spring rolls and Thai beef salad. Happy hour is on weekdays-only from 5pm to 6pm and there’s a VT1,000 lunch special (fish and chips, burger and chips, calamari and salad ) on weekdays as well. Don’t forget they have coconut crabs (when in season) and lobster – straight out of their cage in the harbour.

Specialising in fresh local seafood and Vanuatu's famous organic beef revives the culinary traditions of this iconic eatery. Whether you're looking for a romantic dinner, a lazy lunch or a hearty delicious breakfast, Le Café du Village has it all.

Ramada Resort Port Vila Ramada Resort Port Vila is proving to be a stand out for entertainment, a great addition to the night life in Vanuatu. Boasting three different venues at the one stop means plenty of options to choose from. The Sports Bar has live music every Wednesday and Thursday evening, half price beer, wine and cocktails for their happy hour from 5.30pm til 7pm. On the beach every Friday night enjoy a traditional show from the Banks area in the north of Vanuatu, watch the Seas Snake show, sit back and relax and soak in the beautiful culture that the country is so proud of. Thursdays and Fridays ensure the girls are taken care of, leave the kids at home and head down for Ladies Night in the lounge bar, gifts and great drinks, an evening for the girls to unwind and relax. In true island style savour a long lunch on Sundays at the Ramada Resort Port Vila, what better way to wind up the week than a leisurely bite to eat over a few drinks in the sun.

Tappoo City, Suva

It’s not often you read a review of a food court, but after sampling much of the fare on offer at Tappoo City’s Suva food court we felt compelled to give it a mention. Located in downtown Suva, Tappoo’s dining options range from traditional Indian to New York pizza, vegetarian to Greek. Our favourites were Bollywood’s Maharaja Thali – an entire meal served on a huge platter and includes the most delicious Indian dessert – Coconut Barfi. Our kids loved L.A. Burger’s quasedila and NYPK’s pizzas. For those who enjoy more flavour than spice, Madras Masala’s Dosa (a type of pancake made from fermented batter served hot along with sambar, stuffing of potatoes or paneer and chutney) was delicious. Open seven days – try their Sunday all-you-can-eat brunch for great value.

Spicy Tuna Mini Tacos

(about 12 servings)

Jala-piña – With a Kick! 8 serves (prepare a day ahead)

Ingredients

• 1/2 ripe pineapple, peeled and cut into large chunks • 500 ml silver tequila • 60 ml fresh lime juice • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 small jalapeño, seeded and finely chopped • Ice • 8 pineapple wedges

Method

• Transfer to a large airtight container and stir in the lime juice, sugar and jalapeno. Cover and refrigerate overnight. • Strain the pineappleinfused tequila; stir well. Pour into 8 ice-filled hollowed pineapple or tall glasses and garnish with the pineapple wedges.

• Working in batches in a blender, puree the pineapple chunks with the tequila.

Like coconut shells, pineapples are another tropical must-have.

Ingredients

• 500 g yellow fin tuna steak, sushi or sashimi grade (fresh or flash frozen) • about 1 Tbsp. soy sauce, to taste • 12 mini crisp taco shells, about 8 cm in diameter • 1/2 Tbsp. sesame oil • 2 scallions, chopped finely • 1/4 onion, sliced (optional) • 2 Tbsp. Japanese mayonnaise or French mayo • 2 Tbsp. Sriracha (hot chilli sauce) • 3 Tbsp. Tobiko (flying fish roe)

Method

• If tuna is frozen, thaw by submerging in room temperature water for 30 minutes. • When tuna is just short of fully thawed, slice into small

cubes, around 2 cm • Combine in a bowl with 1 Tbsp. soy sauce, 1/2 tbsp. sesame oil, and 1 chopped scallion. I never really measure; use whatever is enough to coat the tuna thinly. • Chill in fridge for about 30 minutes. • Combine mayo, sriracha sauce, remaining scallions (reserving a some for topping), and 1 Tbsp. tobiko (flying fish roe), whisking briefly until combined. • When tuna is chilled, add the spicy mayo and mix gently until fully coated. • Fill the taco shells with the tuna mix. • Top with a little more tobiko and scallions, and serve! The tuna mix will be good for up to one day, but is best eaten fresh.

Maintaining The Magic Y

ou’ve said ‘I do’ and now you can walk into the sunset and live happily ever after, right? Unfortunately, no. Life is no fairy tale and a good marriage, like any relationship, takes some work. Understanding what makes a good partnership is the first step in going the distance, all marriages have rough patches but if you can keep the lines of communication open, maintain your respect for each other and keep the spark alive through thoughtful and romantic gestures you’ll certainly be heading down the right path for a long and happy marriage.

Communication

Children, work and life in general can all get in the way of good communication in a relationship, and when you’ve been with someone for a long time it is easy to assume you know everything about them. But people change and the best way for a relationship to keep up with the changes happening within it are through real conversations. Talk about how you feel often and don’t let issues simmer away ignored, this applies to all aspects of your life, financial, emotional and practical. You’ve chosen each other so learn to share the load.

Appreciation

Gratitude is closely related to happiness, so you are doing yourself a favour by trying to be grateful for all the good things in your life, including your partner. Over time it can be easy to take someone for granted and all those little things you originally thought were charming become annoying habits, so train yourself to find things about that person to be thankful for and use the words ‘thank you’ a lot, even the smallest gestures should be acknowledged.

Affection

Connection and intimacy are so important in a healthy relationship, physical affection allows you to enter each other’s personal space and make a connection that demonstrates your feelings. It is proven that hugging someone stimulates endorphins that help create a bond with that person. And although sex in a relationship is also important, keep in mind that physical intimacy doesn’t always have to lead to sex, it

84 | Islandliving pacific

The key to a healthy long-term loving marriage is not all that mysterious but a few simple habits can not only keep the romance alive but boost some your body's 'happy' hormones says Georgie Gordon.

is as important to just kiss, hug and hold hands to keep the spark alive.

Romance

You don’t have to have been together for a long time for the romance in a relationship to die so always make an effort to keep it going. Relationship experts believe regular dates are crucial to help couples bond, new experiences together boost serotonin and activate the brains reward system so you will associate those good feelings with your partner. Small gestures go long way too, a little note proclaiming your love or a bunch of flowers for no reason – it may be a cliché but you can’t say it’s not romantic. And don’t forget to compliment each other, don’t assume they know how much you admire them.

Respect

Respect is the foundation of a good relationship. People who respect each other in a relationship support each other and value each other’s independence. You have to give respect in order to get it and giving it should be practiced in all your dealings with each other, from small things like sharing household tasks (not assuming one partner’s time is more important than the other) and by supporting each other through difficult times, whether that be problems that one person is having at work or through larger issues within the relationship.

Space

Your marriage should be the most important relationship in your life but it shouldn’t be the only relationship. Fostering and nurturing friendships outside your marriage is not only important for your happiness but also for the health of your marriage. New and different experiences with other people will not only make you feel more fulfilled but also make you more interesting to your partner. Also, spending some time apart allows you to appreciate your partner more and there’s nothing more romantic than missing and being re-united with the one you love.

Trust

Trusting each other is hugely important for a successful relationship, no marriage can survive unwarranted jealousy or mistrust. Try and park your own insecurities at the door and prove your trust to the person you love, and communicate any misgivings you may have rather than laying blame or accusations. All relationships have their ups and downs but if the trust is broken it can be very damaging. In that case analyse the feelings you both have, each take responsibility for the roles played and communicate to each other what you both think needs to be done to move forward.

Suva Secrets l a t i p a c a t e than jus

mor

Tiffany Carroll discovered there’s more to Suva than meets the eye. From the home of the Flying Fijians Rugby team to colonial history, fabulous restaurants, shopping and sailing, it’s time it stopped flying under the radar. The Fijian national rugby team, The Flying Fijians chooses the Grand Pacific Hotel as their home base when in Suva.

I

’m not sure if it’s my interest in colonial times or simply that Suva has always offered up a good time, good meals and good people for me, but I’ve never understood why people miss out on a visit to Fiji’s capital. Sure it’s busy, the traffic can be a nightmare, but scratch the surface and Suva provides a fantastic weekend away, or longer if you explore the neighbouring islands. The national carrier Fiji Airways recently started direct flights from Auckland and Sydney to Suva to encourage more visitors to the capital and the response has been overwhelming. More and more people are discovering there’s as much, if not more to see and do on the east side of Viti Levu. It’s about a 45-minute drive from Nausori airport to the CBD. I landed in the afternoon and drove through outlying suburbs and farm areas, passed colourful buildings and even more colourful kids in bright school uniforms. On arrival at the Grand Pacific Hotel, I’m greeted by a smartly dressed porter and ushered in to the GPH’s grand lobby, immediately taking me back to colonial times with its high ceilings, framed photographs of Queen Elizabeth’s visit in the 1950s and brass ceiling fans.

The GPH is the Grande Dame of Suva’s hospitality industry and rightly claims to be where elegance meets history. The GPH has been a the heart of Suva’s social life and high society since its opening in 1914. Not only has royalty stayed here, but actors, authors, aviators and singers. Much of the memorabilia has been lovingly and painstakingly found and displayed by general manager Peter Gee and his wife Ruth. The GPH is a tourist attraction in itself – even if you are not staying here a walk through the foyers or a booking for High Tea on the hotel’s lavish balcony is a must. Peter is passionate about Suva and not just his hotel. He and a group of industry colleagues have formed a Destination Suva committee to unveil more of what the capital has to offer. Their first project is to create a historical trail for visitors to meander the streets and see Suva’s stunning architecture and hidden beauty. With the support of Tourism Fiji, Peter hopes the trail will be sign posted in the coming months. Across the road from the GPH is the Thurston Gardens and Fiji Museum. This is a good place to start your exploration of Suva, with artifacts dating back 3700 years with displays of Fiji’s many cultures. You can also get a list of historical buildings to visit.

Buildings in Suva constructed during the colonial administration period are still being used today. The Vineyard, which used to be the old Town Hall, the FINTEL building that once housed the Pacific Cable and Wireless Office, the Suva Library and Borron House are all historically significant and have been preserved under various acts and regulations. Originally built for Mr. James Borron, a plantation owner by his son James Sawers Kidston Braddock Borron in 1927, Borron House was designed by architect R.A Derrick. Since its construction, Borron House has accommodated diplomats and dignitaries from around the world. In WWII, it served as the divisional headquarters for the American armed forces and famous generals and admirals have stayed in the house. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of former US President, Franklin D Roosevelt, spent two nights in Borron House during her tour of the Pacific. The Princess Royal, Princess Anne stayed here in 2006. The Ginger Café is located on the balcony of the Museum, grab Suva’s best coffee here before continuing your journey. Opposite Thurston Gardens and the museum is Albert Park, made famous by Charles Kingsford Smith when he landed his plane here in 1928. This is a great place if you want to walk around or simply watch Fiji’s fittest exercise on the public, open-air equipment. Rugby is on here regularly and you may even glimpse the much-loved national side, the Flying Fijians train here.

Parliament is adjacent to Albert Park and open to the public with regular organised tours available. About a kilometre from the GPH are the Suva markets. A visit here really is a must-do in Suva. The linked undercover buildings are a real glimpse into the Fijian way of life. Fresh fruit and vegetables, herbs and spices, cooked corn on the cob, kava and authentic Fijian art is available. Guided tours are an option, but for me walking through the buildings and talking to the stall holders was an intimate and informative journey. The markets are open every day and a nearby fish market is a fantastic Saturday morning experience. The variety of fish available from local traders is wider than I have seen anywhere in the Pacific. If all the fresh food and smells of the market are making you hungry, jump in a taxi and head to Governor’s for lunch. Once the residence of Fijian High Chief and Pacific statesman, Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, the restored colonial estate now houses South Seas Treasures Exotic Gift Store, Karalina’s Fiji Designer Boutique, Deep Blue Resort wear and Fiji Real Estate Centre. The restaurant itself is one of Suva’s best, with Chef Jason Allport at the helm the food is inspired by traditional Fijian recipes and uses only the freshest ingredients available from the market. After lunch a visit to Tappoo’s shopping centre is a surprisingly western-standard experience. The department store is as you would expect at a Westfield in Australia, with

Suva’s neighbouring island resorts including Toberua Island Resort are accessible by taxi and boat. Running out of time, I organised a visit to Toberua and the secluded Leleuvia Island Resort (left) for a day trip. The transfer boat met us at Bau Landing, about a 40-minute drive from Suva. From there it’s a 45-minute crossing, passing the World Heritage listed Levuka on Ovalau island – Fiji’s first capital. Leleuvia can organise tours to Levuka where you can see many of Fiji’s firsts – from the first bank and post office to the South Pacific’s oldest and still operating hotel, the Royal. Historians have not ascertained its exact age, but records show it was in existence in the early 1860s. Wandering the streets of Levuka is the perfect way to end your historical trail of Suva, but I left thinking there is much yet to discover and enjoy and already planning my return. the most splendid view at the top, and worth every step. Hiking up muddy hills, through streams, across bridges made of branches, and the steepness of some hills, I wondered how I would ever get back down. It’s about 12km all up, we got up at quite a snappy pace so it took us an hour, coming down is about the same time, as its wet and muddy and a bit of care is required.”

The Boardroom The surf shack can be many things and not always right on the beachfront. It’s more about a design ethos, a lifestyle that reflects surf culture and a casual outdoorsy approach to living. The perfect place to come home to after a day on the waves. Toby Preston.

T

he blurb for Nina Freudenberger's book Surf Shack – Laid-back Living By The Water suggests that "Surfing is more than just a recreational activity for its passionate followers, it's more a calling, a way of life that washes through every other aspect of their lives, including the remarkable places they call home" and the book delivers beautifully photographed examples (by Brittany Ambridge) of just that. It features 20 aspirational bungalows, coastal cabins boat houses, trailers and hideaways in California, Australia, Baja and more. What each place has in common is a casual, relaxed ambiance that reflects the sea and the surf and the escape that surfing represents to their owners. The author's fascination with the surfing lifestyle came about after a move from New York city to Venice California where she was struck by a “community [that] has mastered a sort of lifework-surf balance that keeps their world blissfully streamlined". This prompted the non-surfing interior designer to travel to 18 cities in four countries in search of surfers who had translated their love of the culture of the waves into the homes they lived in which she found to be less about impressive architecture than achieving the cultivation of truly authentic spaces that prioritise ease over elegance and good vibes over any sense of a grand vision. She found at the heart of this charming lifestyle was an approach to a home that was not so much about what you need, rather the things you don't. She concludes you don't need a house directly on the sea or "even a ton of money" to find magic in life's little imperfections and to create a home

Garden Wedding Gardening Editor Carolyn Ernst advises on the perfect garden wedding.

ardens, families and special events are all synonyms for a good time and what could be better than to combine all three for a very special occasion to be enjoyed by all? To most of us our gardens are special and we are always proud to share our achievements. It is great to hear how much everyone enjoys our garden, what a great job you have done and whose chest doesn’t expand, just a little, with a few complimentary words? But it is more than this, gardens are for sharing and it is a basic human trait that we enjoy sharing. Gardening, brings people back to nature and I think it makes us a happier and a little more in tune with our world. All special family events can be enjoyed outside in your garden and I think it makes them a little bit more

special and enjoyable, when they are. Unfortunately there are some places where the climate makes this impossible at certain times of the year, but for those of us that are lucky to live in the warm parts of the world and especially here, in the Pacific, we can enjoy the outside, all year round. At certain times of the year there are challenges, with shelter being essential, both in the hot times for shade and during the rainy season, for protection from rain. These shelters can vary, from something as simple as a shade sail or hired tent to your own private fare or nakamal. It is always nice to build something in tune with your environment, so why not choose a building style from the country you are living in. I chose to build my special party shelter or Nakamal, as it is called here in Vanuatu, from 100% local

materials. While it is not built entirely in the traditional manner, we did use nails, it was a fascinating process watching the local builders turn the bent branches into a beautiful building. I have to say it was worth the effort and we have spent some very special times here with family and friends, over the years. Outside living and entertaining is becoming very trendy with some incredibly expensive set ups designed so a complete second kitchen is built, some with sophisticated BBQs, fridges and sinks included in the design. Just check out the glossy magazines, the pictures of magnificent outside rooms are amazing and expensive but are a worthwhile investment to the people that enjoy cooking and outside entertaining. Some of us prefer something simpler, but it is all about knowing ourselves and being aware exactly about who we are

Gardens make for great wedding photography as well.

and what we enjoy. The same can be said about our gardens, some people like the sophistication of a very formal garden while others prefer a wild free cottage garden. Both of these types of gardens are possible in our tropical climates but require much more work and very careful choices of plants to achieve the desired effect. But if this is what you want, then of course, it is worth the extra work required.

A wedding is one of the most important family events there is, but no wedding is without its problems. How we handle them is important and as we all should know, forward planning will limit most of the issues. When making the initial decisions of the where and how, an important consideration is how well do you cope with stress. For some people entertaining and planning is very stressful, so planning any big event in your own garden is just not for you, you want to be able to enjoy the day and your guests. This does not stop you having this special event in a garden setting. There are many public gardens and event centres where everything you want is provided and catered for, so your personal stress is minimised. There is also the option of just having part of the wedding in your own garden. For some, having both the ceremony and the reception, is just too much. Especially if the numbers are large, the reception could be better and easier for those involved, if it is held somewhere else. There are also wedding planners who will work with you through all the issues and are there on the day to make sure that everything happens as per your plan. A wedding is supposed to be a very special day for everyone involved so make sure you make the right decisions in the beginning and choose the options that will not spoil the day for yourself and others. Any event requires planning, but for a very special event, especially something as important as a family wedding, it is all about the planning and the more time and planning, the better.

While most of us keep our gardens in tip top condition, remember a bigger effort is always rewarded by a bigger display and this all takes time. Once the initial decisions are made, and it has been decided at least part of the weeding is going to be held in your garden, then the next step, is the where. For some people with a small garden this might be easy but for others there are issues with accessibility, light and shade that all need to be taken into consideration. Once the where is decided, you need to sit and take a long hard critical look at your chosen area. The first big question, can I make it better? If no then just a little tidy is all that is required, if yes then how is the next question. Maybe it needs a prune, does it require more colour, can this be achieved by displays of flowers on the day or do you need to change your planting a little? These are all the questions which need to be asked and answered. My aunt planted pots and pots of flowering plants that on the special day were planted in the ground to produce a glorious floral display. All of this takes time or if you are lucky there are some places where you can hire these. Also remember a good fertilise is always good. For ideas and small projects to enhance your special day, spend some time browsing the internet looking at sites such as Pintrest, they are full of clever ways to make your special day just a little more special. There are some extremely clever and artistic people in this world but now I have discovered these sites, I know most of us given a little time and research are capable of almost anything. These sites are full of great ideas and never worry yourself about copying. For some of us the ideas are all we need and we mould these thoughts to our own to produce something entirely different. If you do not feel confident to be able to do this, there is nothing wrong with producing exact replicas of what you have seen. You will discover the more projects that you do, the more confident you will become at making little changes and making them a little more your own. If you are not into making your own there are also many sites that will not only give you some great ideas but also where you can purchase them. It is also good to bounce your ideas off someone else and your wedding planner and friends and family are all good to do this with.

Gardens are perfect for intimate family weddings.

There are times when we look at the achievements of others and feel a little inferior that we can’t do the same, this is wrong, we are each our own person and the better we feel about ourselves the more confident and capable we will become. None of us are alike, we are all individuals, so we need to feel proud of who we are and hold our heads high and do what we know is best for us. For those who enjoy gardening we would not want to do anything else but if gardening is not for you, then you need to recognise this and maybe all you need is to take the time to sit quietly in someone else’s garden and smell the roses. Enjoy.

“The more I fly over vast untouched regions of our globe, the more clear it becomes what an incredible accomplishment it is when human beings do absolutely nothing.” Robert Edison Fulton This quote kept resonating in my mind as I flew from Honiara over the Solomon Islands to Munda on a film/dive expedition I was directing for Canon and their ME20F-SH low light camera. Renowned biologist Dr. David Gruber had stunned the world when he discovered the first bio-fluorescent turtle at night during an expedition to the Solomons the previous year. Canon wanted to shoot something amazing underwater that showcased the low-light capabilities of their technology and I suggested to Canon’s advertising agency the idea of filming the bio-fluorescent turtle Dr. Gruber had discovered. I excitedly watched countless untouched islands and healthy reefs fly by from the window of the Solomons Airlines Dash 8 aircraft as we began our descent into Munda. Within the first steps off the airplane I was introduced to Belinda Botha who had taken over a small dive shop the year before and had trained a team of locals into a powerfully competent and passionate group of dive professionals. We all walked a few hundred yards from the strip through a tiny town centre to Agnes Gateway Hotel, which would become our charming new home and our base of operations. It became clear Belinda and her brilliant dive operation were the key to a bright future as divers in search of real

adventure have the resilience, passion and disposable income to travel the extra mile for an amazing experience and they deeply appreciate untouched natural beauty and underwater wildlife. The past year had already shown proof of concept in that Agnes Gateway Hotel had seen a huge bump in occupancy from Belinda’s dive tourism and she has employed a team of ten locals in her dive shop alone, not to mention the extra housekeepers, cooks, hotel staff and business to local shops, artisans, fisherman and farmers that benefit from dive tourism. Besides the completely otherworldly coral reefs and wall dives, Solomon Islands was the site of the most ferocious air, land and sea battles, which changed the course of WW2 and hundreds of aircraft and ships remain missing and undiscovered in the surrounding area of Munda alone. Belinda guided me on several dives, one of which was my deepest dive ever, at 52 metres. We went on to dive multiple WWII wrecks, including airplanes and a Japanese supply ship, the Kashi Maru, that had been sunk right off shore. We also dived the coolest cave that defies the imagination. At night we would dive Mbigo Mbigo for its amazing clarity,

unmatched coral formations and turtle population. By shining blue light on the corals and turtles combined with using a yellow filter on the camera we were able to see incredible bio-fluorescent life forms and uncover the mystery of how turtles see their underwater world at night. Using the Canon ME20F-SH, we ended up shooting the most incredible bio-fluorescent turtle footage ever captured on the first and second night, which completely released stress for the entire team and allowed us to focus calmly on telling the rest of our story with the brilliant night cinematography of our expedition team. Happily, our clients left the island with revolutionary footage and resounding success as a reward for their faith in our expedition. I could not bring myself to leave Munda with the group and decided to stay to make a subsequent expedition to the remote island of Tetepare a few hours from Munda by boat. Tetepare is the least developed and most remote island in the Solomons and is home to vast untouched jungle, monitor lizards, dugong, crocodiles, leatherback turtle nests, green and hawksbill turtles and countless species of fish, butterflies and frogs just to name a few. It is also the home of a conservation group that focuses on helping leatherback and

other turtles successfully hatch and Tetepare is one of the only bright spots in the future of those endangered species. Its remoteness is both a blessing and a challenge to conservationists who brave the elements to carry out their year-round work but desperately need funding support to continue. We shot a short film to help communicate their mission to donors. Tetepare has a very small eco-resort that is designed to let tourists participate in turtle tagging and nest protection to create a sustainable source of income to power their conservation efforts in the future. Our overnight stay there was amazing, with inspiring people and stellar food. Most profoundly for me personally was that I was able to realise my childhood dream of being the first to discover and dive completely virgin on never before explored underwater landscapes thanks to Belinda and her team. We established three new world-class dive sites together around Tetepare she insisted I name. Our first was ‘Tangerine fields’, inspired by the Beatles song ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’ written about a psychedelic journey to an otherworldly place, which is exactly what that amazing dive felt like. Then ‘Magic fingers’ which is a dive

through tight finger-like canyons that extend out from shore and provide a brilliant labyrinth of discoveries and amazing photographic opportunities and finally ‘The Blue Wall’, which was my personal favourite as the picturesque wall descends into the abyss, where tides move massive amounts of water from deep open ocean into and out of an epic island chain. We saw a large hammerhead shark, and many others feeding at dusk. The wall itself was covered in amazing coral structure and felt healthy and teaming with life. I wish I could dive it everyday! The untouched natural beauty of the Solomons is felt in the people I met, as well as in the landscapes themselves. We stopped in the small remote village of Sasavele and were greeted by many smiling children and villagers who were open and playful. They were happier holding their handmade sling shots and playing hide and seek than any kids I have seen in the ‘civilised world’ who all seem to sit alone in a room full of people, glued to their smartphones like digital Zombies. These kids were connected to each other, the natural world around them and to their entire multi generational families who would all be living under one roof. It made me question why

the modern world considers living separate from your family to be progress. I have been fortunate to travel the world directing commercials. I have made a career of finding rare beauty and being the very first to capture it, however, I have never had an opportunity like this, for my work to help create a lasting and positive impact on a magical place like Munda. My hope is that by sharing my experience and images of our expedition with the dive community, we will all help Belinda on her quest to preserve one of the last healthy underwater eco systems on the planet for future generations, by simply visiting Munda and diving this underwater paradise. Each person who books a trip gives strength to the theory of sustainable tourism and can be a powerful force at this crucial time in Solomon Island history. By the way, I only saw one mosquito and oddly it was on the airplane back to Brisbane. I used repellent and took no malaria meds. The people of Munda were open, friendly and delightful

and crocodiles don’t like coral reefs because they have soft bellies and they stick mostly to the swampy mangroves, but they do add exotic dimension to the stories and keep out meek vacationers, which I see as a total benefit.

I’m A Nonentity, Get Me Out Of Here Toby Preston eschews the social circuit for a night in front of the telly.

I

t may seem churlish to complain about being invited to glamorous social events but after more years than I care to confess to, I’ve got function fatigue. I’ve had enough of balancing a cocktail and a canapé while being a little overdressed and attempting to come up with yet another witticism or aphorism which inevitably end up sounding like a solipsism or possibly onanism. It’s not that I have any objection to the superficial or frivolous, I’m renowned for being deeply shallow, so it’s not the absence of profundity that I find tedious, it’s simply that I have other equally frivolous pursuits to pursue. For instance I’d rather be wearing jeans and a t-shirt at my local pub eating a hamburger with a chosen or spontaneous group of friends than doing the rounds, yet again, with the same old crowd of A, B or C-listers who appear to demonstrate the most amazing resilience in attending cocktail party, after ball, after dinner, after charity auction, after race day event, after store opening, after sporting event, after … fridge door-opening event. It’s all too much but for the professionals, particularly with my slim grasp of popular culture, given the evanescent nature of celebrity today, I really wouldn’t be able to distinguish between this week’s reality TV sensation and the woman serving bangers at my local hardware shop’s sausage sizzle. Which made my previous annual appearance at the Logies (as an audience member) a particularly stressful night out. I was good at newsreaders though! A blur of perfect pedicures As it is I’ve mostly been in attendance as a ‘trailing spouse’ as my wife is usually the recipient of these invitations and is well practiced at the art of working a room, having her presence acknowledged and then slipping out the door as promptly as politely possible. In her case she has a prodigious memory for the name of every blonde in a little black dress, all of whom, for me become a blur of perfect pedicures and cheery air kisses accompanied by a warm ‘hello daaarling’. Indeed ‘darling’ is the most useful greeting of all for those of us with porous memories, equally successfully applied to serial wives, all blondes and even a few blokes these days, when ‘mate’ might seem a little macho. A few years ago I thought I was about to be permanently spared any more of these social obligations as my wife took a couple of years out of the corporate world and I consigned my dinner suit to a bag at the back of the wardrobe, hopefully never to be worn again. But, boredom

and an ongoing need for retail therapy revenue forced her back into the workforce and back on to the public relations’ industry list of invitees thus obliging me to once again stumble on as a social sage in her wake. I had to revive my catalogue of bromidic bon mots, resuscitate my inventory of platitudes and prepare my digestive tract for more latex chooks and overcooked beef. But in recent times I seem to have become a VIP in my own right. In the past two months I’ve been designated a VIP customer by my gas supplier, my electricity provider, a car dealer and a lottery ticket agency. I’m yet to actually see any material benefit apart from having been reassured by a call centre operative in Manila that my status has been elevated along with access to ‘our best rate of credit’, or the beneficiary of ‘special offers’ or a more realistic utilities bill that doesn’t any longer include random excess charges with no explanation as to why a household of two should be using enough energy to power half a suburb. But I am definitely not looking forward to the next function in the company of a room full of disgruntled people whose one thing in common is a vexatious relationship with the gas company, or that they bought a Jeep or Volvo or, a lottery ticket! An entire room-full of people venting spleen about overcharging, or the safety features of a formerly Swedish car would be too much even for someone with my mordant sense of humour. The Missing Horses Another feature of having to actually attend events is the erroneous belief that being there is equivalent to participating or having privileged access to anything. The Melbourne Cup for instance; I’ve been on a few meanders through Flemington marquees and so far am yet to see a horse anywhere other than wandering through the car park looking for its nosebag. I’ve realised that these major sporting events, Formula1, tennis, whatever are primarily designed for television, if it’s not on a video screen then it didn’t happen. Even sitting in the organising committee dining room above the Ferrari pit you won’t get any sense of a car race unless you have access to a screen. Sure you get some visceravibrating sensations sitting above idling Italian supercars but apart from the once-a-lap roar as they hit the straight, without a TV monitor, you’re in the dark with another rubber chicken. These days I’d make a charitable donation to a good cause if I could stay at home and watch a crap video.
