But with such a huge range of different types available, it’s sometimes hard to make sure you pick the right one for what you’re doing – you don’t want to buy a jacket designed for climbing Everest when the extent of your outdoor pursuits will be walking your dog along the waterfront. Here are a few factors you should think about to make sure you purchase the perfect shell this season. WATERPROOF VS. WATER RESISTANT Waterproof shells tend to be either waterresistant, or fully waterproof. Water-resistant shells will keep you dry, as long as it’s not pouring down. They tend to be made with a water-resistant fabric and treated with a waterproof coating such as DWR. They’re normally cheaper than a fully waterproof jacket; however, they aren’t as breathable or durable. Fully waterproof shells are made of a special waterproof/breathable fabric, and have features such as taped seams that stop any water from getting in. They’re more durable, breathable, and stay waterproof longer than their water-resistant counterparts. Predictably, they tend to be pricier, but they provide a high level of sustained water protection during the harshest of conditions. DWR stands for Durable Water Repellent. It’s a type of coating used to treat fabrics so that they’ll repel water, and is what makes water droplets bead up and roll off of a fabric. This helps avoid the fabric getting saturated and adding unnecessary weight. DENIER A fabric's denier, D, is a measure of the density of the weave in threads per unit measure. So, the higher the denier of a

material, the more densely it is woven, and the more durable the fabric is. WATERPROOF RATINGS Waterproofness is measured with a waterproof rating. The higher the rating, the longer the fabric will keep water out for. • <10,000mm: Good for everyday use, but will provide minimal protection against anything stronger than a light rain. • 10,000 – 15,000mm: A medium level of protection, good in moderate rain, snow, and wind. • 15,000 – 20,000mm: Excellent protection for most activities, and can withstand some pretty serious rain and heavy, wet snow. • >20,000mm: Extreme protection for heavy rain, heavy snow, high winds and very wet environments. BREATHABILITY RATINGS If you don’t intend to work up a sweat, breathability isn’t an issue. However, if you are, you’re going to require a garment that allows water vapour/sweat to escape. • 5,000 – 10,000g/m²: Good for general day to day wear and light activity.

10,000 – 15,000g/m²: Will keep you dry and comfortable during mid to high levels of activity where you work up a sweat, as long as you're not going super hard. • 15,000 – 20,000g/m²: Excellent breathability, great for high intensity activities such as hard-core alpine climbs. FABRICS The most common materials for outer layers are nylon and polyester. They are windproof, water resistant, and breathable, as well as light, compressible, and relatively inexpensive. Waterproof/breathable shells tend to have a three-layer fabric: the first a nylon or polyester, the middle a microporous membrane, typically made of ePTFE or Polyurethane, and the backer textile a thin layer, usually gauze, laminated to back of the membrane. Examples of waterproof/breathable technologies include Gore-Tex, eVent, and HyVent.
