Tillamook historian publishes new book Tillamook County Pioneer Museum’s historian Jennifer Thiele has published the second book in a series of histories about the Tillamook area. “Art with Spirit” is the biography of nationally renowned muralist Lucia Wiley, who was born and raised in Tillamook. “This was a fun book to write,” Thiele reports. “Through my research, I made connections with the family and was invited to the Wiley-Steinbach family reunion. There, I was told lots of good stories about Lucia and her talents. This brought a whole new level of personality to Lucia’s story and I thank her family for their input.” This volume joins “The Lightning Painter,” the story of Joseph J. Englehart which was published earlier this year. Both volumes are available at the Pioneer Museum’s Book Shop.

TAPA to hold auditions for ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ The Tillamook Association for the Performing Arts (TAPA) is holding auditions for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” Dec. 8 and 9. Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” is the story of a couple who has spent their entire marriage masking their pain and sorrow behind seething anger and mind games, in a constant power struggle. George and Martha are a malevolent codependent couple on the brink of self-discovery. “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” dares you to look inside and ask yourself what is your reality, and

is it really real? TAPA is looking for two men and two women to fill the roles of this production. The production will run April 12-28 (with no show on Easter). Auditions will be held at TAPA’s Barn Community Playhouse (1204 Ivy Ave) in Tillamook, on Saturday, Dec. 8 and Sunday, Dec. 9 starting at 11 a.m. on both days. Those auditioning should come prepared with a monologue of their choice. For more information, contact the director at buckboy71@icloud.com.

CHILDREN will be gifted free goody bags at Pacific City’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Kiawanda Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 15.

T

hanksgiving may be a memory, but it’s never too late to applaud the efforts of those in the community that have made a difference over the past year. Enter the Pacific City-Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce’s annual Awards Banquet and Auction, held Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Kiawanda Community Center. The gala, which this year drew its largest ever attendance — 122 — thanks to the increased capacity afforded by its new host, the Kiawanda Community Center, once again paid tribute to those making significant contributions to the area by handing out three awards — Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year and Volunteer of the Year. Heralded as this year’s Volunteer of the Year was Brian Dowell, who presenter and Chamber board member Doug Olson hailed as “a volunteer extraordinaire.” “He makes projects, events and meetings work,” Olson said. “He’s someone who sees a need and takes care of it without being asked or told. (He’s) someone we trust with events, weddings, memorials, meetings and more. He volunteers his time, his skills, his talents, (and) his strength. “He makes things work right here at our wonderful Kiawanda Community Center,” Olson added. “He’s the guy behind the curtain. He’s the guy that set up all these tables, set up all these chairs, and set up all these plates that you’ve eaten a nice dinner on — and he does it all as a volunteer.” Singled out for their successful efforts to keep the Pacific City State Airport under the ownership of the Oregon Department of Aviation, the Friends of the Pacific City State Airport was given this year’s Citizen of the Year award. Olson, who also presented this award, said the group’s efforts were important given the threat of ODA selling to a private individual. As previously reported in the Sun, the possible sale sparked concern amongst the community and with pilots that use the airport. And that’s where FPCSA stepped in by forming as a nonprofit and organizing support for keeping the airport in the public’s hands. Receiving the award on the behalf of the “Friends” group were Robyn Holdman, of Sister, Ore., and Pacific City resident Sally Rissel. The pair were the driving force behind the creation of the FPCSA. In accepting the award from Olson, Holdman said that the successful campaign owed much to both the community and pilots using the air strip. “You read the newspaper, you came to the meetings, you told the Department of Aviation that this airport matters,” she said. “And that really did matter. You guys changed it. Thank you all for what you did — for saying that this airport matters to you. All of you deserve this award.” Rissel, too, was appreciative of the community support. She pointed at the success of a September work party at the airport as a prime example. The work party drew 52 workers who helped to transform the airport. “It was an amazing day,” Rissel recounted. “It was more than we ever, ever imagined. If you’ve been by the airport recently, you’ve seen that it looks twice as big as it used to.” Finally, the Chamber singled out the Grateful Bread as 2018’s Business of the

Making the presentation to owner Robyn Barcroft was longtime Chamber board member Jeremy Strober, who hailed the business for not only its catchy phrases like “baking the world a better place,” “all you knead is love,” and “everybody gets sconed,” not just its local, dory-caught fish from Sea-Q Fish and its “delicious and fluffy scones” and “gigantic and addicting cookies,” but also for its contributions to the community. “While there is a whole lot that is cool about the Grateful Bread, I think the greatest thing is the way it gives back to the community,” Strober said. “‘Grateful Grub,’ as it is known, feeds local families that are identified by the school district as being in particular need (and) recently sponsored an entire family for Thanksgiving. (And) they’ll do so again come Christmas. Always baking for a local fundraiser, donating to a good cause, hosting a group to show off the wonderful bounty of our area, the Grateful Bread is truly there for our community, ‘baking our world a better place.’”

And the event was more than about feting those making a difference — it also served as a major fundraiser for the Chamber. Though final numbers weren’t available at press time, Chamber president Susan Amort told the Sun that a record number of items were donated for the event’s silent and oral auctions. The Chamber also raised $1,000 via selling 50 mystery boxes for $20 each. The funds raised will be used to help pay for a trip to the Oregon legislature by the Nestucca Jr.-Sr. High School’s senior government class. The event also featured a buffet dinner, which received rave reviews, hosted by Pacific City’s Oar House Bar & Grill and the Grateful Bread, with the Sportsman’s Pub-n-Grub serving up appetizers. Entertainment was courtesy of mentalist Hart Keene, who performed a nearly hourlong set that elicited a number of gasps of astonishment from attendees. Setting the tone for the holidays

Photos by Tim Hirsch

FOLK ARTIST Adam Miller shared a little Christmas history as he pulled from his library of early Christmasinspired folk tunes during his Dec. 4 performance of “Folksongs of the Winter Holidays” at South Tillamook County Library. Playing both guitar and autoharp, Miller invited the small crowd to sing-a-long during this look at Christmas traditions of yesterday.

THE PACIFIC CITY-NESTUCCA VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE presented the Pacific City Dorymen’s Association a check for $3,739.44 for its role in putting on the 2018 Dory Days Festival, which celebrated its 59th event this year. The two groups annually split both the work and the proceeds for the Oregon Heritage event. Accepting the award from Dory Days organizer Melita Spath (above, center) at the Chamber’s Awards Dinner and Auction held Dec. 4 were PCDA co-chair Craig Wenrick (above, at left) and PCDA treasurer Rob Royster (above, at right). “Our partnership is a real important part of (Dory Days),” said Royster. “Without it, Dory Days wouldn’t be what it is. Christmas to come alive during Cloverdale Holiday Hospitality Day The spirit of Christmas will be alive in Cloverdale on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2-7 p.m., when the rapidly evolving village promises an afternoon — and evening — of music and complimentary treats, as well as numerous goods and services. Beginning on the west end of town, the Blue Nickel, an antique and resale store, will offer discounts off most items while the Nestucca Bay Creamery will provide samples of crackers and cheese. On the other side of the bridge, shoppers will find handmade rugs from Turkey at the Istanbul Rug Bazaar houses as well as Anita’s handwoven rugs, Peter Byrne’s tales of adventure, and Julius Jortner’s photos and book of poems. Next door, are Tom Goodwin’s abstract paintings and curios. The nearby Southpawz Groom Shop will offer hospitality to human and canine, and Heart in Hand Chiropractic will open its newly refurbished space to the public for the first time. The Dory Restaurant and Lounge, at the north end of town, will be open to welcome customers. On the south side of the street, Nestucca Valley Auto Parts offers items motorists need for their autos, and Center Market supplies the community with food and drink and other sundries. BJ’s Fabrics and Quilts is offering a special, too. In the antique store The Rusty

Cow, customers will receive discounts and a cup of apple cider as they browse. Katie’ Korner sells Tillamook Ice Cream and hot food. Burkhardt Gallery sells original art and new items such as custom cutting boards by woodworker Rick Martin. And a business new to town — Meg’s 101 Café (menu to be determined) — will welcome visitors with a cup of cocoa and cookies. Music on tap for the event will include an open piano and guitar at the Istanbul Rug Bazaar and an improvisational soundscape performance by Jerry Soga and Scott Eave at the new Goodwin Gallery. “The goal is to share the holiday spirit in Cloverdale, (to show people that) Cloverdale is happening,” Goodwin said. “Business is growing, and we’re getting lots more people who stop in and go down one side and then the other and check it out. We want to keep it going.” And the town is showcasing their Christmas spirit, too. “We have lots of lights up,” said Marilyn Burkhardt. “We want to stay open later so people can see what the town looks like all lit up.” For more information, call Tom Goodwin at 503329-8345 or Marilyn Burkhardt at 503-812-8941.

Bamboo • Laminate • Vinyl OREGON DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION is looking to identify improvements to the Oregon Coast Bike Route and public input will be a key part of the new OCBR plan. ODOT will be hosting an Online Open House through Jan. 31, 2019.

Revitalizing the Route ODOT to update the Oregon Coast Bike Route Plan, launches Online Open House for public input The Oregon Department of Transportation is seeking the public’s help as it undertakes a major planning effort to identify improvements to the Oregon Coast Bike Route, a popular bike route that runs the length of the Oregon Coast. Public input is being hailed as a key part of the OCBR plan, and will set the stage for what ODOT says will be improved safety, accessibility and enjoyment for residents, visitors and all users of the route. The public has a chance to provide input and share ideas about improving the OCBR by visiting an Online Open House available at openhouse. oregondot.org/oregon-coast-bikeroute through Jan. 31, 2019. The public input and ideas will help ODOT to better understand where the issues and gaps are along the route. Every year more than 6,000 people ride the OCBR. The route, designated in the early 1980s, attracts tourists from all over the world and is a treasured resource for many visitors and coastal residents. While ODOT does not currently have funding identified for improvements, the Oregon Coast Bike Route Plan will set the stage for future investments. The plan will identify needs and prioritize improvements to the route to increase safety, acces-

sibility and enjoyment for residents, visitors and all users. The Oregon Coast Bike Route Plan will define the route – both where it follows U.S. 101 and where it follows other roadways, identify ways that ODOT and local jurisdictions can improve the route and support riders, and identify high priority improvements and develop a plan for implementing those improvements. It has been more than a decade since the OCBR was evaluated and no comprehensive planning work has ever been completed. With the changes in bicycle infrastructure standards, and the growth of bike tourism destinations and travel options both nationally and along U.S. 101, ODOT says it believes now is the right time to do this work. ODOT has been working closely with local jurisdictions and other partner agencies such as the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. This includes coordinating with the Oregon Coast Trail effort, a parallel planning effort, facilitated by OPRD, to improve the hiking experience along the coast. ODOT and OPRD are working together where the hiking and biking routes overlap. For more information, visit OregonCoastBikeRoute.org.

CORRECTIONS&CLARIFICATIONS In “KCC to host inaugural ham dinner, Christmas tree auction on Dec. 8,” published in the Nov. 23, 2018 edition of the Sun, we reported that the Dorymen’s Heritage Museum is amongst the nonprofits that have decorated a tree for the event’s Christmas tree auction. The Pacific City Dorymen’s Association should have been labeled as the participating nonprofit as the museum is a project of the PCDA and not a nonprofit in and of itself.

BOB STRAUB STATE PARK in Pacific City is celebrating its 30th anniversary. The 484-acre park was named after Oregon governor Bob Straub in honor of his commitment to the protection of the Nestucca Sand Spit.

Thank You, Bob Straub By VALERIE HENDON for the Sun

T

his is the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Bob Straub State Park, named for Oregon’s 31st governor to honor his commitment to the protection of the Nestucca Sand Spit. It is also the 50th anniversary of the Oregon Beach Bill, now called the Beach Law. The Beach Bill, written by Dr. Bob Bacon, presented to the legislators by the then State Treasurer, Bob Straub, and approved by Governor Tom McCall, decrees that all land within 16 vertical feet of the average low tide mark belongs to the people of Oregon and guarantees that the public has freedom and uninterrupted use of beaches along Oregon’s 363 miles of coastline. Bob Straub State Park is more than a paved wayside where you can access a beach that extends four miles in length from the mouth of the Nestucca River to the south and Cape Kiwanda to the north. And it’s certainly more than a static, lowland coastal tract with sand flats that consists of non-native vegetation. Bob Straub is a park in transition from a sandspit with very little vegetation and few dunes into a closed-canopy forest with open grassy areas, sedge-filled meadows, marshes, and sand dunes that look oceanic. It is a place of surprising topography, diversity and variegations of sight and sound. Straddled between ocean and river, the vegetation on the ocean-side is hardy and sparse, and the Sitka spruces are blown into a permanent protective stoop. Walk inland though, there’s gentleness, a calming presence. Here, the spruce, the Douglasfir and the shore pine, clothed in lichen and moss, stand straighter and grow taller. Mushrooms with fun-to-pronounce names like Mycena murina and Russula rosacea establish army camps under the canopy of conifers and take over the forested floor within days after the first fall rain. It’s a place where you can hear coyotes give song to their success in the early morning, an owl hoot in mid-day, and practically go deaf from the roar of the surf that dominates the night airwaves. There are seasonal wet areas in hollows nestled between sand hummocks and the lee side of dunes that trap rain water throughout the winter, forming shallow ponds that attract waterfowl and shorebirds. And along the river-side there are marshy areas and tidal inlets that are guarded by battalions of sword

ferns and harbor tree frogs that cautiously croak “all clear” after you’ve passed by. These little channels are sanctuaries for sandpipers, avocets, dippers and other little birds that bob and scurry about gobbling up insects and small organisms abandoned with the outgoing tide. I like to walk not on the well-worn trails that the horses have carved through the park, but follow my dogs along the narrow animal trails through barely trodden beachgrass, following the same path a coyote took earlier that morning when the ground was shrouded in the protection of fog — emboldening even the timid blue heron to take flight, denouncing the morning with its croaky aria. And the dizzying array of spider webs! Try not to get tangled in the anchor lines and zip lines and 2x2 trampolines that are woven in the grasses and cover so much of the ground that you have to tip toe to get through them. It’s a magical place! You can sit on the river-side and watch salmon cruise in with the tide, with harbor seals ferociously giving chase from under and ospreys and eagles from above. It’s a place where you can find solace, smell the rain and taste the tide, obtain your zenith and saunter with the Milky Way. And still yet, you can hike to the top of a grassy sand dune and see Haystack Rock in the distance, in its frozen salute to the North. The 484-acre State Park was stitched together by lands that were acquired from government entities (175.61 acres), state (117.41 acres) and private landowners (190.65 acres) some of whom were children of local pioneers. The land was set aside primarily for the purpose of its recreational value and to give the public access to the ocean and 1,150 acres of prime fishing, clamming and crabbing on the Nestucca Bay. The park was also to serve as an important wildlife habitat and ecological coast complex to be retained for future public enjoyment. And to this day, it most certainly has attained its purpose So thank you Bob Straub, for your insight, your passion and perseverance in assuring that all Oregonians and tourists have the opportunity to stride in your humble footsteps and get to appreciate the uniqueness of this little park at the end of the road. Watch for the second part of Valerie Hendon’s Bob Straub State Park series in a future edition of the Sun, which will cover some of the management challenges and issues the state park is experiencing and how the community can help.
