Those interested in joining in the celebration, which is sponsored by the Pacific City-Nestucca Valley Chamber of Commerce, are invited to begin gathering for complimentary refreshments starting at 5:30 p.m. Shortly after that, students from the Nestucca Jr.-Sr. High School music program, directed by Kathleen Serven, will sing a selection of holiday classics. Later, kids will be able to have some one-on-one time with Santa, who will hand out small gift bags to attending children. Organizer Verne Mobley

Pacific City's South Tillamook County Library fetes 20 years in Winkelman Building By VICKY HIRSCH of the Sun
S
outh Tillamook County Library, housed in the Winkelman Building, 6200 Camp St. in Pacific City, will be celebrating its 20th year in its current location, Saturday, Nov. 28 from noon to 3 p.m. with an open house complete with refreshments. Following a long history in various locations, including a building at the end of the airport; a small house on Brooten Rd. just short of Ferry St., which was shared with the newly formed Thrift Shop; and a double wide trailer across from the Brooten Rd. location, Bill Winkelman proposed the South Tillamook County Library Club, which was formed to financially support the library, buy one of his eight 50- by 100-foot lots for $10,000 and he would donate the other seven lots for the new building site.
In May of 1989, the South Tillamook County Library, Inc. was granted 501 non-profit status and the first of many fundraisers were held toward the building of the new library — including chili feeds, spaghetti feeds, book and bake sales, concerts, fashion shows, and silent auctions offering art by local artists such as Nora Hall, Mark Cavatora, and Rose Perez. The original building committee consisted of Bill Baue, George Baumgardner, Bill Walker, Katherine Hebron, and Elaine Loudin, who was later replaced by Jackie Shank. Architects Alfred Edelman and Thomas W. Thompson were selected to design a 3,180 square foot space to include a children’s room, non-fiction room, room for computers, fiction stacks, a lounge, and charge desk and office space for staff. The plan was to finance the building solely via grants and public donations. In September of 1993, ground was
A Nov. 21 fundraiser for the upcoming Pacific City community park at Sportsman’s Pub-n-Grub raised $1,112 for the effort on the strength of $112 in cash donations and an additional $1,000 by Sportsman’s owner Rob Royster, who thanked the band for performing for no charge. He said that enabled him to donate more to the cause. The Sportsman’s is located at 34975 Brooten Rd., Pacific City. Call 503-965-9991 for more information.
The public is invited to learn to make a holiday wreath in a class taught by Joy Jones at the OSU Extension Service. The class will be offered twice on Dec. 1, 3:30-5 p.m. for youth in third grade and above and 6:30-8 p.m. for adults and youth that are currently in third grade or above. The Nestucca Valley Community Alliance Board of Directors formally approved a master plan for developing a 2.4acre community park near Cape Kiwanda during its annual meeting on Saturday, Nov. 21. The master plan, which was drafted by Harper Houf Peterson Righelli, Inc., features the development of the park divided into six phases, the first of which NVCA will be focusing on in the coming year. Phase one consists of various infrastructure improvements including site access improvements on Cape Kiwanda Drive, a pedestrian access route, a 60-space parking lot, trailhead access to the adjacent BLM property plus six

Fundraising continued, and on Aug. 24, 1994, George Baumgardner and Charlie Walker secured a $30,000 grant from The Collins Foundation. In October of 1995, the Library Club voted to establish an “Endowment Fund for the Benefit of the Winkelman Library Building and Property.” The principle would be allowed to grow, with the interest being used for maintenance of the building and grounds. Funds from the Library Thrift Shop are also used for that end. On Nov. 25, 1995, the Library Club held an open house and dedication of the Winkelman Building. ver wanted to make your own holiday wreath with native trees and shrubs? This December, workshops sponsored by Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge will allow those with the inclination the chance to take home a new skill along with a beautiful, fragrant wreath. In total, three workshops will be held by U.S Fish and Wildlife volunteer and master wreath-maker Lee Sliman, starting with one on Dec. 6, noon-2:30 p.m., at Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy, 1931 N.W. 33rd St, Lincoln City ($5 donation). Following that, two free workshops will be held at Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Dec. 12 and 13, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Pre-registration is required, however, at press time, all spaces had been filled and the waiting list is growing by the day. The workshops will offer participants the chance to craft wreaths using greens from native species, including Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock, Sitka Spruce and Salal. All wreath-making supplies will be provided. Gloves are recommended. Attendees will also learn advan-

tages of each material type, advantages that weigh beauty vs. longevity. “Even though it’s prickly, Sitka Spruce makes (one of the) best wreaths,” said Dawn Harris, USFWS refuge visitor manager. “The foliage stays green for a really long time.” She said that cedar boasts a “very attractive” feather-like look, but does turn brown earlier, and that both spruce and Douglas Fir offer firm needles. “They’re spiky and stiff and make for a very full-looking wreath,” she said. Contact Refuge Volunteer Lee Sliman at 503-812-6392 to register and for more information. Nestucca Bay NWR is located on the west side of Highway 101 approximately six miles south of Pacific City. To visit the refuge, turn west off Highway 101 onto Christensen Road and proceed a half-mile to the lower parking lot. Workshop attendees will meet there. The Connie Hansen Garden Conservancy is located off of Highway 101 in Lincoln City. To visit the Garden, turn west onto 33rd street, proceed 0.1 miles and the Garden will be on the right.

Immersed in Christmas By VERNE MOBLEY Lion Membership Chairman
Well, golly gee!! Tim says it’s time to do another one of these “advertorials.” I think that means it’s a little Lions editorial that the Lions pay for — and that’s just fine with us. The turkey shoot is winding up with many lucky winners. The plates have all been blasted with different methods, from the ice pick to the mighty pellet gun. You don’t want to mess around with any Lions, as you could be blasted with a pellet rifle. Right, Lion Teresa Smith? And ice pick stabber Lion Fran Madachy. Well, whatever it takes. Lion Fran sold 24 plates and the rest of us “not so ambitious” Lions beat her by selling at least 26. Many of us Lions are now immersed in the Christmas Baskets program. Food boxes are out in most businesses in South County so we hope to fill ‘em up at least once each. Thank you so much Lions and firemen who put up flags in Cloverdale and on the Beachy Bridge in Pacific City. The community DOES appreciate it! Many of our good Lions are involved with the Christmas Basket Program. Many turkeys from the Lions turkey shoot were donated to the Christmas Baskets. Thank you, good neighbors! Today is Nov. 24 and Cloverdale’s Christmas is up to day. It shore is pertier than last year’s. Thanks Lions Dave Gordon, Dorothy Gann, yours truly and Bob Doerig, who furnished the tree. Ho, Ho, Ho and Merry Christmas! It’s great to be a Lion. Call any Lion for information about how to join us. My number is 971-257-0200. Happy Days!! Paid Advertisement

A Bountiful Banquet
By VERNE MOBLEY
I should be all full of Chamber news as we had our early board meeting today, Nov. 19th. Member Kim Carr is chairperson of our annual Chamber Awards Banquet and Silent Auction on Dec. 8. She is nervous about it, but she always comes in with a great job. She has lots of support from the whole board. Thanks, Kim. New and old officers will be sworn at — or in. Yours truly will be president; Dave Baxter, vice president; Melita Spath, secretary; and Doug Olson, treasurer. Board Members will be Merrianne Hoffman, past president; Jeremy Strober, Kim Carr, Susan Amort, Jacie Voegeli, and maybe one more. This event is always a sell-out, so get your reservations soon. Kim is handling that, too. The Chamber is hoping to get Transient Lodging Tax monies for our many projects. Mike Rech has rejoined us and will be working to obtain grants. Welcome aboard, Mike! 2015 winners have been selected. Great choices!! We have a great comedienne to entertain us. We have great reports about her. We will talk next month about our new Visitors Center coming soon. Please consider joining the Chamber! It’s too much fun! Call me at 971-257-0200. Happy Days!! Paid Advertisement

Giving Thanks for the Steelhead
OPEN HOUSE! OPEN HOUSE! OPEN HOUSE! OPEN HOUSE! OPEN HOUSE!

I
hope Thanksgiving finds you well and enjoying the many blessings that make up the holiday season. For fishermen, Thanksgiving signals the start of the winter steelhead season in the lower Nestucca and Three Rivers. There have been some good-sized crowds already plying the waters on Three Rivers. The hatchery hole has been quite busy. The recent high waters have brought the fish in and just the past couple of days the water cleared and started to drop to good fishing levels. Once the Nestucca lowered to just above six feet, the steelhead went on the bite. Three Rivers is where the bulk of the early run of steelhead ends up. It is also where you can be assured of the most success. The reason for the better odds is because Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife doesn’t like the fin-clipped fish to go beyond the hatchery, so, whenever possible, they raise the wear and stop the steelhead from going any farther upstream. This means that the steelhead are trapped there and are easier targets for fishermen — and that is the goal of fisheries management. It is almost a 100 percent fin-clipped hatchery run, with only a handful of non clipped steelhead in the system. ODFW has planted these fin-clipped steelhead here for the express purpose of being caught and the goal is that none of the fin-clipped fish get upstream past the hatchery. That changes in January when the native Nestucca and the fin-clipped broodstock steelhead start to return. For now through December it should be mostly all hatchery fish. As far as the mainstream Nestucca, bright chinook salmon are still enter-

ODFW postpones start of Dungeness crab season
5/6ft, $25 • 6/7 ft, $30 • 7/8 ft, $35
ODFW is delaying the start commercial Dungeness crab season along the Oregon Coast, which normally opens Dec. 1, because of elevated levels of domoic acid in the southern half of the state. The decision is based on recent test results and consultations with the Oregon Department of Agriculture, the Oregon commercial crab industry and Washington and California Departments of Fish and Wildlife. According to ODFW, the delay will allow completion of additional testing for domoic acid in order to provide confidence that crab harvested from Oregon waters are safe to consume.

Additional domoic acid test results are scheduled to be available by the end of the first week of December, and ODFW plans to evaluate options for opening the commercial season at that time. The recreational harvest of Dungeness crab in Oregon’s bays and estuaries is currently closed south of Heceta Head due to elevated levels of domoic acid. Recreational harvest of crab in bays and estuaries north of Heceta Head remains open. The opening of the recreational crab harvest in the ocean off Oregon north of Heceta Head will be decided pending additional domoic acid test results next week.

ing the system and are being caught from the deadline at First bridge all the way down stream to Cloverdale. My guess is that there will be salmon available until about mid December. Backbouncing eggs have been very effective as of late. My second choice would be diver-and-bait with either eggs or sand shrimp or both. Back rowing a wrapped Kwikfish would round out my top choices. Don’t overlook using a bobber and bait in some of the slower holes. Fishing pressure on the Nestucca has been light as of late with only 10-15 shuttles per day. That translates into being able to fish by yourself in many locations. Everyone dreams of being the only fisherman on the river, but, in reality, that just doesn’t happen much. Taking advantage of times when fewer fishermen are on the river seems like a nice option to crowded rivers. The high waters we have had over the last couple of weeks have done wonders for spawning fall chinooks. The higher water has resulted in fall chinook making it up into all the smaller spawning creeks that enter into the main Nestucca. A trip up to Elk Creek, a tributary 26 miles up from Beaver, revealed hundreds of fall fish shooting under the culvert into Elk Creek. We had similar reports from Wolf Creek, Tony Creek, and Moon Creek. Being able to get into the spawning creeks is a big deal. In years past when the water levels remained low at spawn time that resulted in the majority of salmon being forced to spawn in the main stream Nestucca. Spawning there is a gamble and makes the entire spawn susceptible to being wiped out in the event of floods or very high water. Getting into the smaller creeks protects the spawn from high water and helps to ensure good returns in three years. Have a safe and fun Thanksgiving!

P
acific City’s Pelican Brewing Company regained its chowder crown when tasters voted its New England-Style Clam Chowder as “People’s Choice” during the Lincoln City Chowder Cook-Off, held on Nov. 14. Held under the tent at the Lincoln City Outlets, more than 1,200 guests enjoyed the comfort food of the Oregon Coast at the 11th annual event, which featured competition from five restaurants — all from the Oregon Coast. Second place went home with Tiki’s at 51st, from Lincoln City, for their Love Chowder and third-place went to Roadhouse 101 for their Classic Razor Clam Chowder. The Mayor’s Award, which was presented by Lincoln City Mayor Don Williams, was given to Tiki’s at 51st for their exemplary spirit and enthusiasm. Also participating at the Cook-Off was Deli 101, in Lincoln City, and Gumbo Goddess Catering, from Vancouver, Washington. The Culinary Center, headed by executive chef Sharon Wiest, also participated with her ManhattanStyle Clam Chowder. The Culinary Center was not eligible for People’s
Choice voting. In its third year as a two-day event, the Chowder Cook-Off served up thousands of samples of what organizers describe as the Oregon Coast’s favorite comfort food. The event also featured live music throughout Saturday afternoon performed by the June Rushing Band. In addition, local clamming and crabbing expert Bill Lackner was on hand to provide information on how to catch your own dinner, and Rusty Truck Brewing provided local craft beer and supplied a selection of Oregon wines. Sunday’s activities featured entertainment in honor of Native American Heritage Month including bead making, tribal drummers, and tribal storyteller Esther Stutzman. Also on Sunday, Chinook Winds Casino Resort executive chef Jack Strong gave a demonstration that highlighted Native American fall cuisine using fresh, local ingredients. The next Lincoln City Cook-Off will be the Mardi Gras Jambalaya Cook-Off on Saturday, Jan. 30, 2015 at the Culinary Center in Lincoln City.
