FROM THE PRINCIPAL

When Pacific Hills Christian School presents a musical, our intention is to glorify God by the use of the gifts that He has given to us as students, staff and parents. We thank God for this opportunity to present Hairspray, the Broadway Musical. We are delighted that you have joined us to enjoy and appreciate this musical and to be thankful for the gifts and commitment for all of those involved. Through the production of this musical and its presentations, we constantly remind ourselves of God’s goodness to us through music, drama and dance. What special gifts He gives us to enjoy and to exercise for the blessing of others. There are so many people involved in a musical production and we are thankful for each one of them, including those behind the scenes. It is our continuing prayer that you will enjoy the time of fellowship as well as the musical itself and that you will be blessed by what you see and hear. Dr E J Boyce 3

FROM THE DIRECTORS The 1960’s - A thriving decade in America! Yet a controversial one! A time of live television dance shows; towering hairdos held up by cans of hairspray; bright fashion in even brighter colours. Yet against this backdrop were laws of racial segregation; where African Americans had to sit or stand at the back of buses; where African Americans couldn’t use the same bubblers or even toilets as the white Americans; where television was black or white but couldn’t be both.

This was Baltimore in the 1960’s! And here we find Tracy. A young schoolgirl, who loves to dance and who dreams of being a star. Tracy has the option of using her growing fame to become rich and endorse products but instead sees a more desperate need. She wants to use her newfound popularity to stand against the racial segregation in her town. She wants to change her part of the world.

Hairspray, our 10th Musical, has been an exciting show to rehearse and perform. We have been incredibly blessed by a fantastic cast and staff who have taken to this show with commitment and excitement. We have a cast of more than 160 involved in the show this year ranging from Years 3-12 and countless staff, parents and students, volunteering their time to help make this show a success. Pacific Hills musicals are not just about an excellent performance. More importantly they are about the growth of each individual student as they are challenged and encouraged to develop their God given gifts and skills, and to serve each other in community for God’s glory.

Love through acceptance and knowledge is the message of this show. Yet we know of a greater love. Jesus’ love could not leave people impoverished by sin. He came to bring hope and to bring change. Understanding what Jesus has done should drive us to be doers as well – not just hearers. We live in a world that needs change. His love can change. Our prayer is that as you enjoy the performance tonight that you will see that change is possible; for our world and for us. May Christ be at work glorifying Himself through us. Miss Lauren McDougall & Mr Philip Edney

SYNOPSIS Act I Baltimore. 1962. In a polluted, industrialised city with racial tension brewing and little hope for the working classes of America, a school girl awakes. As she wanders the streets of Baltimore, where others see despair and corruption Tracy see hope and beauty. She greets the city with joy awaiting what this new day will bring. (Good Morning Baltimore). At the local television station, Corny Collins is filming his hit show for the teenagers of Baltimore with his all white council. The Nicest Kids in Town. Show producer Velma is trying to advance the career of her daughter Amber and is prepared to use any means possible. Watching the show at home, Tracy and best friend Penny discover there are auditions the next day for a new council member. Tracy’s mum Edna tells her she can’t go, as fat people can’t be accepted on television. However, Tracy’s Dad, Wilbur encourages her to “think big to be big”. Mother’s Edna, Velma and Prudy are all struggling with their daughters who believe they are grown up enough to make their own decisions in life. Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now. Next day, Tracy and Penny visit the television studio. Show heart throb Link Larkin accidentally bumps into Tracy and she immediately falls in love with him. I Can Hear the Bells. Velma is disgusted by how times have changed since she was the star of Baltimore. Miss Baltimore. Velma is even more disgusted when she hears that Tracy believes that the Corny Collins Show should be integrated. In detention for her hairdo, Tracy meets Seaweed who stars in the one day a month “Negro Day”. He encourages her to come and dance for Corny at a live show. Corny sees her and is so impressed he puts her on the Council. Link sings her a special song, much to the disgust of Amber, who believes that Link is hers. It Takes Two. Velma plans her revenge.

Back in the Turnblad home, Tracy is offered a lucrative promotions deal with Mr Pinky and so Tracy takes Edna out of the house for the first time in many years. Edna discovers that life isn’t so bad and she gets a makeover at Mr Pinky’s. Welcome to the 60’s. Next day at school, Amber knocks Tracy out during a dodgeball game, but this only leads Link to move to protect Tracy. Seaweed and his sister Little Inez invite the group back to their place and tell them that they are happy being dark skinned. Run & Tell That. At the record shop the group meet Seaweed’s mother and star of Negro Day, Motormouth Maybelle. After a series of confrontations, Tracy realises that it is time to help these people integrate with the white council on the Corny Collin’s show. She comes up with a plan to march on the television studio the next day. Link, thinking only of himself and his career, leaves. However, everyone else decides to protest. Big Blonde and Beautiful. At the end of the protest all the women and their daughters are arrested.

Act II

The women, all in gaol, bemoan their condition. Big Doll House. Wilbur comes up with bail for all the women but Tracy is not allowed to leave. Edna and Wilbur share a moment together. You’re Timeless to Me. Back at the gaol, Link admits to Tracy how wrong he was and how he loves her. He helps Tracy break out of gaol and at the same time, Seaweed is rescuing Penny from her home where she is being punished. Without Love. All meeting back at the record store, Maybelle tells of her confidence in God and that He will bring justice to them all. I Know Where I’ve Been. Together they hatch another plan for all appearing on the Corny Show. At the station, Corny sells the product. It’s Hairspray and Amber has to sing and dance in order to take the prize of Miss Baltimore. She dedicates her song to Tracy. Cooties. As Amber is about to receive her prize the station is invaded. It is time for change. You Can’t Stop the Beat.

TRACY Georgia Gourlay Georgia is passionate about singing and performing. Hairspray is her third musical and her first principal role.
