xciting news, Dear Reader—a new addition to our PacificSD family is set to arrive in June. It’s a boy. Lisa Brown, MD, our obstetrician at Kaiser Permanente, made the declaration while pointing at the ultrasound monitor: “See, this little part is a two-millimeter penis.” “Just like Dad,” I said, which barely registered an LOL. Especially shocked by the pregnancy were my in-laws in Brazil, who still think I’m gay because Simone and I haven’t produced a child in 10 years of marriage. (And maybe because we met at Rich’s nightclub in Hillcrest?) Anyway, I couldn’t think of a better way to welcome you to the photography issue of PacificSD than to share this ultrasound image—captured this morning:
And to my Dad, who loved photography and Paul Simon but didn’t manage to stay alive long enough to meet his grandson, I dedicate these lyrics from his favorite song, “Kodachrome,” which he sang to me and my brother all the time when we were kids:

In January, a San Diego man will spend a day legally blind, wearing a blindfold for 24 hours to show how most sighted people take for granted activities such as shaving, eating and playing golf. “We hope it’s a reminder that sight is a privilege,” says Jeff Katz, the subject of the filmed experiment, “Providing Perspective,” and a partner in its underwriter, Provider Design (which is collaborating with San Diego Center for the Blind). Katz will hit the greens with blind golf champ and San Diego State University student Jeremy Poincenot (pictured supporting Katz), who’s lost much of his vision to rapidly progressing Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy. “This project will help the sighted better relate to the visually impaired,” says Poincenot. “And how can I pass up a round of golf?” providerdesign.com 24

Given the closeness surfers enjoy with the sea, it’s unfortunate their boards are made from water-poisoning petroleum-based materials. “Big surfboard companies are scared to deviate from what they’re doing because they’re focused on the bottom line,” says La Jolla native Pierce Michael Kavanagh, who explores the problem in his documentary Manufacturing Stoke. Rather than condemn the $7.2 billion industry, the film (which began touring last spring and is screening at festivals in Hawaii and Australia in January) follows several California board-shapers who’ve begun to work with sustainable materials. “We’re at the beginning of a renaissance,” Kavanagh says. “Changes are coming from the little guys—the ground floor up.” thesurfnetwork.com

German photographer Stefanie Schneider pursued the American Dream through 1970s road movies and Golden State roadmaps—finally gathering her camera, a bag of expired Polaroid film and some daring Los Angeles friends to seek splendid desolation in Southern California’s high desert. The resulting series of washed-out, offbeat images, 29 Palms, CA, forms the basis of her show “Stranger than Paradise,” opening January 14 at Scott White Contemporary Art in La Jolla. “I’ve always had an affinity for wide-open, slightly decaying spaces,” says Schneider, whose most striking frames set orange-wigged actress Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill, The Crazies) adrift in an arid blandscape. “There’s so much space in the desert for people to lose or possibly fulfill their dreams, and there’s nobody to watch or judge.” scottwhiteart.com

Republican Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher isn’t just running for mayor of San Diego—he’s rolling. During his first term in the California State Legislature, he helped get 21 pieces of legislation signed into law (including bills relating to job creation, health care and public safety) and now aims to break local-government gridlock. Kristen Meier knew she had a higher calling at age 12, when, after swimming practice, she watched divers doing warm-ups. “I was curious to try it—and I did,” she says. Ten years later, the San Diego State University senior is studying economics and making a splash in the diving world. She was named 2011’s Mountain West Diver of the Year, has nabbed half a dozen Mountain West Athlete of the Week awards and hopes to place high enough in the 2012 USA Diving Winter National Championships to pursue the Olympics after she graduates. Says Meier: “This sport has made me strive to do better.” 38

istory is both a record and a touchstone of our lives. And San Diego lensman Tim Mantoani has found his own artfully unique way to doubleexpose it in his new book Behind Photographs: Archiving Photographic Legends (Channel Photographics; mantoani.com). A landmark not just of photography but of cultural iconography, the oversized volume showcases 158 well- and lesser-known photographers posing with their most famous or serendipitous images. Characterizing the book’s making as a “monstrous task,” Mantoani, a successful commercial photographer known especially for his portraits of professional athletes, conceived the project five years ago partly in response to the medium’s by-then entrenched digital revolution “At the end of 2006, I realized I had not shot a single piece of film that year,” says Mantoani, 43, a graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography in Sana Barbara. “I was like, Wow, there’s something missing here.” Lamenting the loss of “magic” in photography, Mantoani did something impulsive that December when he visited his Bay Area childhood stomping grounds. “There were these rare Polaroid 20x24-inch large-format cameras available in New York and San Francisco, so I rented one before I even considered shooting something that would mean something to me.” At an added cost of $75 per print (the camera has a built-in
film processor that produces an instant poster-size print, accounting for part of its beastly bulk), using the equipment would be expensive. Mantoani called two local photographers, legendary music lensman Jim Marshall and sports shooter Michael Zagaris, and invited them to a studio with their most iconic photos in tow. “Jim, a fiery personality and a maverick in photography—he shot the famous Johnny Cash flipping-off-the-camera photo—walked in, saw the camera and said, ‘What’s this for?’ I said, ‘I want to do a portrait of you holding your best image.’ He said, ‘You’re f----n’ nuts.’” After photographing Marshall and Zagaris, Mantoani asked each of them to write a bit of back story about their featured photos at the bottom of their respective Polaroids. Seeing an “equal weight” between photographer and photograph within his images, he knew he was onto something. “All of these ideas just really came flooding in,” he recalls. “What if I could call Steve McCurry and photograph him with his shot of the ‘Afghan Girl’ that appeared on the cover of National Geographic? And what if I could call Nick Ut and get him with his [Associated Press] photo of the Vietnamese girl burned by a napalm drop?” Every photographer who responded positively to Mantoani’s emails and letters opened doors to others. By March 2007, when he traveled to New York for the first time to photograph several subjects, a network of referrals— including highly influential fashion eye Walter Chin and pioneering San Diego skateboard photographer J. Grant
Brittain—had given the project a life of its own. “I let the journey take me where it wanted to go,” he says. There was a bump in the road when Polaroid announced it would cease making film for the 20x24 camera, and the price of a single exposure shot up to $200. (Fortunately, a film stockpile remained available.) To cut down on costs and trips to San Francisco and New York, Mantoani spent $15,000 on a Wisner 20x24—an “ugly stepchild” of the original Polaroid camera that uses the same technology and, at about 100 pounds, is more portable. Mantoani also developed a comfortable working relationship with the device. “When you shoot with a large-format camera, you’re next to the lens engaging with your subject,” he explains. “The main difference is that you don’t have this barrier in front of your face like you do with a 35 millimeter camera. It allows you and your subject to converse. And when you decide, you push the plunger and—pop—the flash goes off.” Apart from the creative challenges, the photographer, who lives with his wife Lynn and son Lucas, 11, in Point Loma, had personal motivations for completing Behind Photographs. “When you realize life is short, you just go for it,” says Mantoani, a cancer survivor. “I learned from these photographers that the rewards of life are what you do every day. Long after I’m gone, somebody can go into a museum or an exhibit and walk up to these giant prints and not only see the photograph, but the faces that documented history in a way that will never be done again.”

ccording to Sarah Ellis at Jayne’s Gastropub in North Park, becoming a great bartender is simple. “The best way to learn about drinks is by drinking them, and I dedicated quite a bit of time to my studies,” she says. JENNA (from Mammoth, lives in La Jolla): I’m the events and marketing manager for McFarlane Promotions, the premier event planning company in San Diego. I love to do anything outside—running, hiking, wake-surfing, yoga and I recently got back into snowboarding. Generally, I’m down to do anything as long as I’m with a good group of friends. I also don’t mind spending a day shopping if it’s necessary.

ERIC (from Massachusetts, lives in Mission Beach): I work for a medical device company, training breast surgeons— oncologists and radiologists, not plastic surgeons—how to use the medical equipment our company provides. I’m very spontaneous, always up for trying something new or exciting. I travel as much as I can. I just got back from Southeast Asia in August, and I’ll be leaving for Israel and Egypt in a couple days.
Jenna and Eric met 30 minutes ago in the limousine that has just delivered them to Torrey Pines Gliderport near UCSD. As they sign accidental death waivers in preparation for leaping from the bluff 400 feet above Black’s Beach, the flight director announces that it will be at least an hour before the wind is sufficient to keep paragliders aloft— good time for a drink. WINGING IT How was it? JENNA: Amazing. It was beautiful. It was less scary than I thought it would be. It made you feel super powerful, like you could control the wind. It was so easy and peaceful and calm. What do you think of Eric? JENNA: He’s really nice. He’s fun to hang out with. One to 10 for looks? JENNA: I would say he’s very good-looking, but he’s not necessarily my type. So, one to 10 for looks, I would say, for most girls, he’s probably like a nine. For me, maybe like…seven. on common ground? Back on earth, Jenna and Eric head to Pacific Beach for an oceanfront dinner at World Famous. PacificSD calls the next morning to see what we missed.
ERIC: We had a great time—a lot of good food and good conversation. I had the steak and scallops, and it was amazing. The best dish we had was the nut-crusted brie appetizer.
How was World Famous? JENNA: I had actually been there two nights in a row just about a week prior to our date and wasn’t at all bummed to be going back for thirds. We shared the ahi and brie appetizers, and they were both delicious. I had the sea bass for my entrée, which was even better.
Will there be a second date? JENNA: No second date; we weren’t really compatible. Maybe we will hang out as friends. ERIC: There wasn’t a lot of romance, but we both had a great time.
The moral of the story—sometimes it’s easier to jump off a cliff than to find romance in this town. But although we had hoped for a more exciting conclusion (i.e., Jenna and Eric’s adrenaline-fueled, post-paragliding sex was caught on the limo’s hidden dashboard camera), we didn’t get one. At least the pictures are nice… another perfect photo finish for the Finest City record books.
