his year, I ordered seeds for my garden from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company. In my order came a free packet of San Marzano tomato seeds—non-GMO San Marzano tomato seeds. The envelope is a little ad for the LabelGMOs.org ballot initiative campaign—an important grassroots movement whose goal is to have Californians vote in November on labeling all foods that contain genetically modified organisms. GMOs are created by taking DNA from one species and injecting it into another, combining animal, plant, bacterial and virus genes to make seeds that don’t occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding techniques. Seeds have been developed for soy, corn, wheat, cotton, sugar beets, canola and many other crops using this technology. According to the USDA, in 2009, 90 percent of canola, 93 percent
of soy and cotton and 86 percent of corn grown in the U.S. was from GMO seed. Consequently, it’s estimated that 80 percent of processed food in this country contains GMOs. No long-term studies on the safety of consuming GMOs were ever done on humans. The prevalence of genetically engineered material in our food is thought to contribute to allergies and diseases, although concrete health risks are unclear. Over 40 countries in the world already have labeling, including the European Union, China, Japan and Australia. The initiative proposes that food be labeled if it contains GMOs in the same way that packaging contains nutritional facts. LabelGMOs.org and the Committee for the Right to Know have collected over 850,000 signatures on the initiative, more than is needed to place it on the ballot. Polls have repeatedly shown that over 90 percent of Californians support labeling GMOs and if the measure passes, California will become the first state in America with mandatory GMO labeling laws. Their slogan is “It’s our right to know.” With proper food labeling, consumers can make truly informed choices about what to eat and what to feed their families. ✾

or more than 40 years, Good Earth has been committed to the health of their customers and sustainability of the community. As Marin’s oldest, independently owned organic and natural market, they continue to be a forerunner by using green technology, supporting local food producers and keeping customers well fed and informed. As a leader in the promotion of the local food movement, the shelves at the market are filled with hundreds of items that are produced here in Marin. From milk to green cleaning products to tea
United Markets
Marin’s Homegrown Grocery Offering the best in fresh, local products since 1955
O
riginally started in San Francisco, United Markets opened around 1900. In 1955 the business crossed the Golden Gate Bridge and set up shop in San Rafael; the second store followed in 1958 in San Anselmo. The original owners, the Saccone brothers, ran the company until 1982, when longtime employees Bill Daniels and Bob Musante took over. Ten years later, Piero Lovi came on board to handle the deli and the business steadily grew. Joining their dads to help run the markets were Bill’s daughter Kelly and Piero’s son Michael. Working together, they continue to bring Marinivores local products and quality grocery items that won’t break the bank. United Markets is proud to carry merchandise grown and produced in Marin. and beer, if it’s made in the county, Good Earth will have it. The produce department is 100% organic and each item is labeled with origin and miles traveled. Additionally, there are signs with the names of local farms providing the freshest fruits and vegetables seasonally. Their groceries are labeled on the shelf price tags to provide customers with as much information as possible about the food in the store. Labels include: raw, whole grain, gluten-free, vegan, Non-GMO, Fair Trade, AND Locally Produced. As an integral part of the community, Good Earth is a partner to many different social causes, using outreach and nonprofit support. The store is a meeting place for local producers to share ideas. They provide scrip cards for area schools, are a member of Sustainable Fairfax and the Environmental Education Council of Marin as well as donators to the food pantry at San Geronimo’s community center. They are collaborators in the Non-GMO Project and have an Organic School Lunch Program. On February 15th Good Earth moved into its new location, at the gateway to Fairfax. The bigger space allows for more selection and the design utilizes sustainable concepts. Their new store offers an organic cafe, bakery and juice bar with indoor and outdoor seating, expanded seafood and meat counters and an olive bar. More space means more room for what Good Earth does best: sustain customers, the community and the planet. Good Earth Natural Foods, 720 Center Blvd., Fairfax. 415-454-0123. www.genatural.com
from Cooper Cakes, local products are important to United Markets shoppers. In the cooler, look for dairy items from Straus Organic, while in the cereal aisle you will find granolas from Galaxy and Fresh from the Fields. The Republic of Tea in Novato and Bordenave’s Bakery in San Rafael deliver their popular teas and breads, and jars of amber gold from Bay Area Bee Company grace the shelves. Many more local items can be found throughout the stores. As a partner in the community fabric of the county, both stores are working on reducing their carbon footprint as they continue to support various philanthropic programs. United Markets “Community Cards” donate 3 percent of purchases every month to 82 schools throughout Marin. This year, United Markets was given the Sustainable North Bay award from the California Legislative Assembly, in recognition of the grocers’ efforts to lower their energy use and reduce waste. United Markets is implementing an action plan through the Greening for Profit program, which will continue to make the business more sustainable. United Markets is a hands-on company in touch with the community, striving to respond quickly to customers’ demands while sourcing fresh, local products, employing green business practices and supplying families with top quality goods at reasonable prices. A
study published in the North Bay Biz titled “The Economics of Going Local”(February 27, 2012), conducted by Sonoma State University, confirmed what most of us already knew: that buying locally from an independent grocer who buys and sells local goods provides more jobs, business income and tax revenue than shopping at a chain store. The study also cited the community benefit of this shopping practice because the local grocer will reinvest the profit in the community. Mill Valley Market could be the poster child for this study because the owners support local vendors, grow and sell their own produce and give back to the community through a variety of philanthropic endeavors. Their Mill Valley Market Farm in Sonoma County has teamed up with Front Porch Farm to grow even more fresh, organic vegetables. Right now in the produce bins the market has five types of gorgeous lettuce and fava greens that were all picked yesterday—it simply doesn’t get any fresher than that. Next up will be dino kale and Swiss chard and in the summer vine-ripened heirloom tomatoes and much more. Furthermore, they are fulfilling their dream by supporting small

farmers. The gardens are producing enough to supply three Mill Valley restaurants: La Ginestra, Vasco and Balboa Café. In addition to the locally produced vegetables and fruits, the market’s aisles are chock-full of goods from around Marin. Jars of ultra-local honey can be found on the shelves alongside a large selection of granolas from Marin makers. There are multi-colored eggs from Woolly Ranch in Tennessee Valley as well as hot sauce, pasta, pesto, breads, cheeses. All over the store, labels designate items from Mill Valley and Marin. In addition, the store has a donation program called Shop and Give, which collects funds for local nonprofits. A percentage of customers’ purchases are contributed to the organization of their choice, which, since 1992, has raised over $850,000. A flourishing, third-generation family-run market supporting Marinivores in Mill Valley and beyond—Mill Valley Market is the epitome of what it means to “Go Local.” ✾ Mill Valley Market, 12 Corte Madera Ave., Mill Valley. 415-388-3222. www.millvalleymarket.com

Calgang Thai Eatery
,IEZIRP] 8LEM *SSH -RWTMVIH F] 7IEWSREP -RKVIHMIRXW Fresh, organic produce creates dishes that are a cut above the rest
leaming cases of stunning pastries backed by rows of freshly baked baguettes greet customers when they enter the Sweetlife Bakery and Café. With a French baker manning the oven, and a dedicated pastry staff, baked goods don’t get any fresher than this. It used to be that you had to cross a bridge to get a southern styled fried chicken sandwich with spicy coleslaw or a crackly almond croissant but now you can nosh on those delectable items as well as pizzas, salads, quiche, eggs and more right in San Anselmo. The interior space is light, bright and airy. The bakery and kitchen are on full display. If it is on the menu, it is made here. Everything is that fresh! They also provide their guests with a beautiful potted succulent garden seating area where you can share your favorite treat with your four-legged friend or just enjoy the sun. Locavores will be happy to know that Sweetlife gets the organic milk for their coffee drinks from Clover Storenetta, their yogurt for their beautiful yogurt parfait from Straus Creamery, and various vegetables and cheeses for their pizzas and cheese plates are sourced from local purveyors such as Cowgirl Creamery. “Sweetlife is about making people happy,” according to co-owner Jennifer Sulprizio, and the neighbors seem to agree. Happily, Sweetlife will open for dinner on Friday, May 11th. ✾
alking into Calgang Thai Eatery in Northgate One, the tantalizing smells of a rainbow of curries and noodle dishes tempt the appetite. Sit down at one of the comfy tables and tuck into the impeccable Som Tum (green papaya salad), chock-full of crispy green beans and carrots fresh from the farmers market, followed by one of the delightful curries on the menu. Marinivores will be glad to know that most of the vegetables and basil comes from the farmers market; many of the kaffir lime leaves used at the restaurant are from owner Pim and her friend’s very own trees. All the curry pastes are made in-house and the restaurant never uses MSG. The menu is sure to please any palate with its wide range of vegetarian options, noodle and rice dishes, items from the grill and an intriguing list of appetizers. One of the most popular ways to experience Calgang Thai is to order a combination plate: choose two delicious items with jasmine rice for one low price. The ambience is a soothing, modern oasis, with soft lighting and red and gray walls. For the last 24 years, Calgang Thai Eatery has been THE place to taste the exotic flavors of Asia in Marin. ✾

hose of us who have the pleasure of living in Marin County enjoy world-class cuisine, wine and miles of beautiful rolling hillsides leading to stunning coastal backdrops. Much of what enables us to keep this stunning scenery intact can be attributed to our hardworking dairy farmers. Without their tireless efforts to keep their farms functional and thriving, along with support from consumers like you, our picturesque backdrops might be filled with tract homes and shopping centers. Located just across the Marin County line in rural Petaluma, for three generations Clover Stornetta Farms has been committed to supporting local dairy farmers. Clover works with these dairies to produce the cleanest, fresh pasteurized local milk that we then deliver to your local restaurants and grocery stores. A favorite among both gourmet chefs and consumers, Clover is a family-owned dairy company that places high value on the concepts of sustainability, exceptional quality, the humane treatment of animals and educating consumers on where their food comes from. The milk we produce comes from contented cows who have the good fortune to graze along the Marin hillsides and coastlines people come from all over the world to see. We take pride in preserving these stunning Marin County landscapes for generations to come. ✾

esta Epicures Guild is an unusual business in the heart of San Anselmo. Purveyor and wholesaler of fine coffees and teas, Desta’s showroom is a welcoming place where customers purchase and gather for tea tastings and to share stories of travel and life. All coffees and teas are 100 percent organic and are mostly from small family and co-op farms, fair-trade, biodynamic and wild-harvested, when possible—making each cup as close to nature as possible. The coffee beans are from the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia, and are roasted in small batches in Marin in single origin. Desta’s teas are thoughtfully created from premium botanicals to bring the fullest flavor and most health benefit to each sip. They are sold loose leaf and hand-blended with care and inspiration by owner Emebet Bellingham, a tea aficionado, who says, “Tea is a personal passion, it’s beautiful and magical.” Ten percent of all sales go to worldfamily.org, a nonprofit co-founded by Emebet that helps rural villages and orphans in Ethiopia. The community development program brings clean water, healthcare and education to foster self-sustainability. Come in to Desta, the business that brings joy in teas and coffees and in life by supporting small organic farms, sustaining rural communities in Ethiopia and being a part of Marinivore traditions in San Anselmo. ✾ Desta Epicures Guild, 15 Ross Ave., San Anselmo. 415-891-8495. www.desta.com
Sans | A Gluten-Free Grocery
We’re “Without,” So You Don’t Have to Be A mission is to provide one and all their daily bread
Experience One of Marin’s Most Unique Hidden Gems in an Elegant, Yet Relaxed Waterfront Setting
S
ans started out of the simple need to provide a one-stop shop and educational environment supplying the largest selection of glutenfree goods and resources to those with gluten sensitivities. No more does one have to search in several stores to find meager selections of gluten-free goods or search online for products whose edibility and safety are questionable. Instead, by offering a breadth of options selected with taste, nutrition and safety in mind—by a caring and knowledgeable gluten-sensitive staff—Sans is the only place you will need to shop for your gluten-free groceries. Not only is Sans a one-stop shop for all things gluten-free with peace of mind, but it’s also a community of support from people who understand and care. The owners, brother and sister Marisa and Chad North, have lived with gluten intolerance for years. Marisa says her struggles, particularly the feelings of alienation and difficulties finding good gluten-free food, “sparked my passion to provide a safe haven of understanding and experience for those also coping with gluten sensitivities. Sans is this safe haven—the reality of my dream.” Chad, equally enthusiastic, adds that the “increased energy and vitality” that comes from avoiding gluten in his diet “fuels my passion to help other people do the same.” ✾

Agricultural Institute of Marin
Get To Know Your Local Cheeses at Agricultural Institute’s Farmers Markets Farmers, producers and purveyors offer tasty learning experiences
D
id you know that the North Bay is the artisan cheese capital of California? In fact, today, over half of the nearly 50 small-scale cheesemakers in the state are in Marin and Sonoma. Ranging from French-style soft cheese made from cow’s milk, to robust hard sheep’s milk cheeses, to tangy soft goat cheese, this area has it all. One way to get to know the cheeses of Marin is by exploring the Sonoma Marin Cheese Trail Map (cheesetrail.org). Another great way to sample some delicious locally made cheeses is at the Agricultural Institute of Marin’s farmers markets. Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to educate the public
about the nutritional and economic benefits of buying locally grown food directly from farmers, and to connect and support communities and agriculture. Previously known as Marin Farmers Markets, AIM represents more than 500 local and regional farmers, food purveyors and artisans and operates eight farmers markets in the Bay Area: four in Marin County (Marin Civic Center, Fairfax and Novato), three in Alameda County (Grand Lake, Hayward and Oakland) and one in San Francisco (Stonestown). AIM is committed to educating the public through a number of different avenues in addition to the on-the-ground experiential learning that happens every week at AIM’s farmers markets. AIM’s educational and outreach programs serve over 1,000 community members a year, ranging from local K-12 students, to regional Rotary clubs, to visiting conference groups. AIM is also proud to accept EBT/food stamps at all its farmers markets, increasing access to healthy, local food for all. In addition to cheese, you’ll find everything you need for an entire meal at AIM’s farmers markets. Come down and join the community gathering place where local farmers, specialty food purveyors, artisans and community members come together to celebrate our vibrant local food movement. ✾ Agricultural Institute of Marin, 76 San Pablo Ave. #200, San Rafael. 415-472-6100. www.agriculturalinstitute.org
Servino Ristorante
Beautiful view, authentic Italian cuisine Where the locals relax and dine
I
n 1978, shortly after arriving from Italy, Angelo and Kathryn Servino opened a small Italian restaurant on Ark Row in Tiburon. It quickly became the quintessential neighborhood gathering spot for locals who sought great Italian food and wine served in a convivial atmosphere. Word spread of Servino’s signature dishes, which were usually ordered without ever looking at a menu. Whether you ordered the posillipo, cozze supreme, baked lasagna or zabaglione made the classic way whipped in a copper pan, all were prepared with the same passion that you’d find in a European trattoria. After 21 years and raising two sons, Angelo and Kathryn moved the restaurant to its present location on the 16 | 1EVMRMZSVI Spring/Summer 2012
water, probably the most spectacular and serene waterfront deck on the bay, with breathtaking views of Angel Island and San Francisco. Their elder son, Natale, runs the upstairs banquet room, hosting weddings and special events. Vittorio can be found next door at their café baking pastries to please the many who pass by (often by bicycle) while visiting Tiburon. Today, diners enjoy such Servino favorites as the housemade tagliatelle with lamb ragu, or wood oven-baked pizzas topped with fennel sausage and Calabrese chilies, while sipping wines from a list that showcases some of southern Italy’s most exceptional and small-production varietals, all while sitting under the sun enjoying life on the waterfront. Since its inception, Servino has been a favorite with locals and visitors alike. The two groups can be seen intermingling, especially in the restaurant’s cocktail lounge where local jazz musicians perform on weekends in an intimate setting warmed by a corner fireplace. Servino strives to think locally, both in serving its clientele and in sourcing its products. As a proud member of Marin Organic, Servino brings to life Italian classics using seasonal ingredients from nearby farmers and purveyors. In 2010, after many years of setting initiatives to reduce its environmental impact, Servino met and exceeded the requirements to become a Certified Bay Area Green Business. Combine the picturesque location with the friendly staff in this family-run restaurant, and you have the recipe for the longevity of Servino.
