eauty may come from within, but we still judge people by their outward appearance. This is an understandable trait and is widely used in the natural b y D r. R world where the ornate coloring of males is used to suggest exceptional health and virility. By using cosmetics and other healthrelated products women, and men, can make themselves more attractive to the opposite sex and improve their social standing. But is there a hidden cost to our health? The ancient Egyptians used cosmetics not only in life, but also in death. They created perfumes by mixing animal fat with scented oils like cinnamon or juniper and used the blood of animals to mask gray hairs. They even placed cosmetics in their tombs to aid their passage from Earth to their goal of eternal life. However, these cosmetics didn’t just include natural products; recent examinations of preserved cosmetics demonstrated that the Egyptians were able to synthesize their own chemicals. The black eye makeup that they described as mesdemet, known more recently as kohl, not only contained components of lead,

but other compounds that are practically nonexistent in nature. They must have been skilled chemists to synthesize these complicated compounds. u s s K i n g The 19th-century Europeans were also using lead-based products. This did not so much help them achieve eternal life, but hasten the end of their mortal one. The fashion for pale skin led to people lightening their skin with lead-based powder, causing many early deaths. It also became popular to bleach hair with lye, although this caused it to fall out, resulting in the arrival of ornate wigs and their elevation to the ultimate fashion accessory. Unfortunately, these spectacular wigs required a thorough greasing with lard to keep them in place; vanity can be an ugly, not to mention smelly, trait. To paraphrase the old commercials for a cigarette aimed at women: “We’ve come a long way, baby.” Over the last 150 years the cosmetics industry has improved to such an extent that the search for beauty is no longer as much of a health hazard. Fueled by an expanding market (continued on page 8)

aybe you have super skinny legs and don’t like your f lat backside. Maybe you want your butt to look better in jeans or a swimsuit. Or perhaps you simply can’t seem to generate the muscular force you want while lifting weights, running or riding a bike. Whether you’re pursuing performance, power or presentation, let’s learn what your butt muscles actually do and come up with a simple four-step solution to get your glutes firing. A common imbalance (even among athletes) is a weak butt. This is a result of a combination of a “sitting” profession that keeps the butt muscles turned off all day long, followed by hitting the gym, running, cycling or doing any other form of exercise with those inactivated butt muscles.

G r e e n f i e l d

When this happens, it creates three problems: s 9OU LOSE THE AESTHETIC APPEAL OF HAVING NICE GLUTES s 9OU GET LOW BACK PAIN AS YOUR PELVIC JOINT OVERCOMPENSATES FOR A WEAK BUTT s 9OU CAN T GENERATE AS MUCH POWER AS YOU SHOULD WITH YOUR HIPS AND LEGS

What Are the Butt Muscles? Several muscles comprise your butt. The first is your gluteus maximus, which is one of the largest and strongest muscles in your body; it starts at your hip and ends on your upper leg bone. The gluteus maximus extends and externally rotates your leg, also extends your trunk, and is mostly responsible for the “round” look you can get in your butt when you do exercises that trigger these motions. The other two smaller butt muscles are the gluteus medius and the gluteus minimus. These muscles, which can become just as notoriously weak as the gluteus maximus, primarily work when you’re supporting your body on one leg, as you might do when you’re walking, running, or climbing stairs. If you’ve ever been out on a tough, hilly hike, you’ve realized from your sore butt the next day just how much you utilize your glutes when you step, climb and change direction. By simulating these types of hiking movements when you train your butt

in the gym, you can significantly improve your leg power, and also get a better look in the process. Here are three exercises to get mountain-goat glutes: 1 Step-Ups: Choose a bench or platform that is preferably at knee height or above. Place one leg up on the elevated surface and step up, driving your opposite to your chest as you step. For added difficulty, place a barbell on your back or clutch a dumbbell to your chest. Do 3-5 sets of 8-12 reps for each leg. (continued on page 14)

(continued from page 12) 2 Stair-Climber Strides: Get on a stair climber at the gym and hold a dumbbell in each hand. Put the machine on a relatively slow rate and climb 2-3 stairs at a time, focusing on pushing through the entire stepping motion. Perform 3-5 sets of 2-4 minutes, and recover between reps by working a different non-leg exercise (such as core, arms, etc.). 3 Kick-Outs: There are several variations of the kick-out motion, but each involves you bending at the waist and kicking out behind you, preferably with your heel going higher than your low back. You can get in a crawl position and kick-out (easy version), use a kick-out machine at the gym or attach a cable or elastic band to your leg and kick-out. Perform 3-5 sets of 10-20 kick-outs per leg. 4 Steps To A Better Butt

Here’s my 4 step process to getting a stronger butt in 8 weeks: Step 1: 4 sets of 25 bridges every 2 days for 2 weeks Step 2: 4 sets of 25 ball bridges every 2 days for 2 weeks Step 3: 2 sets of 25 ball bridges and 2 sets of 25 single leg bridges for 2 weeks

Pacific Sun-Marin’s Best

Step 4: 2 sets of 25 ball single leg bridges and 2 sets of 25 single leg ball bridges for 2 weeks

Once you’ve finished, move into maintenance mode: 2 times per week do 2 sets of 25 single leg bridges and 2 sets of 25 single leg ball bridges. Those who need a bit more motivation and/or buttressing can take Bootylicious classes at Body By X in Corte Madera. Owner Xavier McClinton, who has been helping Marinites firm their buns for some

time, emphasizes that it’s important to continually challenge oneself— including one’s muscles. Rather than relying on a particular set of exercises, McClinton switches up the routine in his booty-boosting classes, so participants not only don’t get bored, they also get a well-rounded workout. (He includes indoor cycling, strength training and bioDensity as well in the twice a week 90-minute classes.) From lunges and squats with kettlebells to jump boards and plenty of strength training, there’s no end to the possible variations. And the enthusiastic McClinton assures that in his class, “nobody gets left behind...” ✿ Ben Greenfield is recognized as one of the top fitness, triathlon and nutrition experts in the nation. He has written several books, as well as the “Get Fit Guy” column for QuickandDirtyTips.com. Xavier and Nadia McClinton own Body By X, 5768 Paradise Dr., Corte Madera; (415) 945-9778.

Form the Body through Cosmetic Surgery

How do you choose a physician when you’re ready to make improvements to your appearance? First and foremost, select a surgeon you can trust who is trained and experienced in all cosmetic surgery procedures, operates in accredited medical facilities and adheres to a strict code of ethics. Dr. Armen Serebrakian heads the list of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Reconstructive and Facial Plastic Surgeons who meet all these criteria. For more than 25 years Dr. Serebrakian has helped patients reach their goals through in-depth discussion of options appropriate for each individual—non-invasive as well as permanent surgical repair—and the use of cutting-edge procedures. He says, “Facial reconstruction is part art and part medicine. A good facial plastic and cosmetic surgeon has to have a well-developed artistic concept of sculpturing parts of the body, as well as good surgical techniques.” Dr. Serebrakian established the Bay Area Laser Surgery Center in 1997, where he provides his patients with the best and safest medical treatment possible. He successfully treats a variety of skin conditions including: birth-marks, moles, scars, sunspots, rosacea, leg/facial spider veins and varicosities. He also sees patients for laser eyelid surgery, midface/necklifts, browlifts, facial implants/lip augmentation, liposuction, Botox, injectable fillers, hair removal, tattoo removal and more. ✿

Sans | A Gluten-Free Grocery

A bright, modern space for local, professional hair care

Their mission is to provide one and all their daily bread

Fairfax’s Eco-Conscious Family Salon

One-Stop Gluten Free Shop

Sans started out of the simple need to provide a one-stop shop and educational environment supplying the largest selection of gluten-free goods and resources to those with gluten sensitivities. One doesn’t have to search in several stores to find meager selections of gluten-free goods or search online for products whose edibility and safety are questionable. Instead, by offering a breadth of options selected with taste, nutrition and safety in mind—by a caring and knowledgeable gluten-sensitive staff—Sans is the only place you will need to shop for your gluten-free groceries. Not only is Sans a one-stop shop for all things gluten-free with peace of mind, but it’s also a community of support from people who understand and care. The owners, brother and sister Marisa and Chad North, have lived with gluten intolerance for years. Marisa says her struggles, particularly the feelings of alienation and difficulties finding good gluten-free food, “sparked my passion to provide a safe haven of understanding and experience for those also coping with gluten sensitivities. Sans is this safe haven—the reality of my dream.” Chad, equally enthusiastic, adds that the “increased energy and vitality” that comes from avoiding gluten in his diet “fuels my passion to help other people do the same.” ✿

Marin Endocrine Care and Research

The Best In Diabetes, Hypertension And Osteoporosis Treatment MECR provides pharmaceutical options in a clinical research setting

Since 1988, Doctors Richard Bernstein and Linda Gaudiani at Marin Endocrine Care and Research have been providing quality care to clients with endocrine system diseases. Their team is involved in a number of research studies on the newest treatments available for diabetes, hypertension and osteoporosis and is able to offer these treatments to patients within a clinical study. The research is guided by three principles: safety, effectiveness and usefulness. Patients can trust that the study they are participating in is carefully monitored by experienced health professionals. The chosen drug has been painstakingly vetted by examining the rounds of tests that have already been performed. It won’t be tested by MECR until the doctors and their staff are convinced that the medication is safe to use, is likely to be effective and is reasonably easy to administer. Patients are given a stipend for time and travel. The studies are fully funded by grants, so the participants do not incur any expense. The benefit to patients is multifold. First, they get the highest quality of care by the Marin Endocrine team, using the appropriate tests to diagnose and supervise their condition. Secondly, they are able to try the newest effective medications available for their disease. Finally, they have the satisfaction of knowing that they are contributing to the pharmaceutical options for others

with their condition, and speeding up the process of getting effective medications through the FDA approval process and available to the general public. Because of their number of years in the clinical research field, Dr. Bernstein and Dr. Gaudiani are aware of the leading edge of healthcare solutions to endocrine system ailments. Currently they are in the process of testing new and improved insulins and innovative medications to treat high blood pressure and osteoporosis. They are excited to be on the frontier of new discoveries in medicine and to be contributing to finding solutions for some chronic and debilitating health problems. Contact Marin Endocrine Care and Research today for a summary of their current research studies. Their goal is to help you achieve optimum health. ✿ Marin Endocrine Care and Research, 900 South Eliseo Dr. Suite 201, Greenbrae. (415) 461-9113. www.marinendocrine.com

Beauty + Health + Fitness Fall 2012

Marin-based wellness expert and owner of CleanseMarin Grace Janho brings modern light to the ancient belief that “death begins in the colon.” If you consider that experts believe the average person has 5 to 20 pounds of accumulated waste in his or her colon, contributing to major weight gain and health issues, this begins to make sense. The typical American diet and the fact that we live in a society overloaded with toxins are two main contributors to an unhealthy colon and the reasons almost everyone should consider colonics. Think about it: We wash our hair and brush our teeth, but fail to recognize that we have an internal body that needs to be cleansed as well. In addition to removing toxins from the colon, a colonic is deeply hydrating, resulting in improvements in energy, skin and mental clarity. It also drains the lymphatic system and helps alleviate pressure put on the liver and gallbladder due to constipation. CleanseMarin clients range from those who wish to maintain a healthy colon and immune system to clients with cancer, Lyme disease, etc., who want to support their body while in treatments. Grace also works with a team of partners to customize detoxification and weight loss programs. CleanseMarin is the No. 1 doctor-recommended colon hydrotherapy center in Marin and the only one that offers the FDA-registered LIBBE system, aka gravityfed, open system. ✿

t’s hot out, but the canyon is cool. The Larkspur Walkers are crossing Magnolia Avenue en masse, waving their thanks to stopped cars, picking up the pace as they head into the redwoods. Keeping an eye out on Madrone for uneven pavement that could prompt a fall, they resume walking and talking. The chatter is of gardening and grandchildren, a recent operation, a good read, an upcoming trip. There is discussion of personal challenges, reflection on current events. Several minutes in, someone points and announces, “That’s where Janis Joplin lived!” While most know this, there are bound to be newcomers who don’t. For their sake, the landmark is duly noted. “It’s a social club on its feet,” says Nancy Spivey, the group’s founder and leader of 25 years. Spivey was honored last week by the Larkspur City Council for her years of public service. A Sept. 22 potluck supper in Piper Park, the group’s regular point of departure every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, will unite former

and current walkers as Spivey officially “hangs up her sneakers” this month as leader of the legendary Larkspur Walkers. “The group takes the place of the old Welcome Wagon,” says Spivey. “Anyone can join, learn the ropes, find a plumber or doctor, explore the neighborhoods. They can learn about the community and make new friends. It’s not always easy at our age. You see people who look like they could be friends, but how do you meet them? This is a good way.” Clearly. What began in 1987 as a clutch, with Spivey the everattentive mother hen, is now a parade of strong, active walkers from diverse backgrounds. A sedentary English teacher working to get into shape walks with a former champion gymnast looking to keep moving. The group welcomes grandparents who have come to the area to be near family, as well as longtime residents who enjoy meeting neighbors for the first time and discovering picturesque streets they have passed by for years. Nearly 100 residents from Tiburon to Fairfax are listed on this year’s roster. Typically, 35-45 walk on a given day, with 55 showing up on a bright and breezy recent Monday. “We were lucky to get five or six in the beginning,” remembers Jeanne Zanzi of Corte Madera, an East Coast transplant and one of the first to enjoy the “long walks made short by conversing with friendly folks.” Like many of her fellow walkers, Spivey came from somewhere else. The Iowa City high school P.E. teacher, school-board member and parks and recreation commissioner came west more than four decades ago. She studied gerontology at San Francisco State and taught tennis, dance and aerobics classes at the new Larkspur Recreation Department before becoming its director in 1979. During her tenure, older residents were always on her mind. Acknowledging that “not everyone can play tennis,” although the fiercely competitive Spivey no doubt wished they could, she encouraged creation of a community garden. For the past 30 years, the garden has been ablaze in blossoms and awash in veggies. But Spivey, a big Giants fan, is, at heart, a promoter of physical fitness. In the 1980s she saw that runners were having knee problems and knew that jogging was not in the cards for many seniors. “I was looking for something that would involve regular outdoor activity along with the social interaction. Walking seemed ideal,” she said. She came up with a formula that worked—structure coupled with flexibility and fun. The regular routine—meeting three times a week at the same time and place, year-round with no interruption, rainy days and holidays included—makes it easy for walkers to come and go as busy lives demand. The price is right at $20 a year. With the growth in the group, walkers now have a choice: striding at a threemile-an-hour pace, taking the “low roads” to avoid hills and steps, or walking laps around the park. Then there is carpooling to special “first-Wednesday” walks, post-walk coffees and holiday gatherings. By always looking to include everyone who wanted to join, Spivey forged a cherished community institution that shows all signs of continuing to thrive. Vicky Young, who works part-time and walks full-time, is one of a dozen members who are signed up to help keep the group going. “I’m just being selfish,” says Young, who will be coordinating walk leaders. “Nancy is leaving us this wonderful legacy, and I want to help carry it on. Besides, I just enjoy doing it!” ✿
