n 2010, The Marin Builders Association purchased the 34year- old Home Show from Doris Bagley. This event was a perfect match for the MBA, which effectively represents and promotes its members and the Marin home-building and remodeling industry. For our second year, the goal of the Marin Home & Garden Expo is to further establish the event as a significant and important marketing opportunity for our sponsors and exhibitors and a fun and educational experience for all those who attend. Our showcase for this year of “Mid-Century Modern” has a special resonance with me, as one who grew up in Marin in the ’50s and ’60s. Though it wasn’t as coveted by the whole wide world then, it truly was by all of us who lived here. It was then, as it is now, a rare and exceptional place to live, work and grow up. We are attempting to bring a taste of this gift that is Marin and its unique lifestyle to this year’s Expo. A great part of Marin’s creativity and passion is reflected in our homes and gardens. The 2012 Marin Home & Garden Expo spon-

sors, exhibitors, lecturers and performers are proud to bring their own special contributions and insight to address our attendees’ individual requirements and visions. When you take on a project like this you assemble the best team you can to accomplish these challenging goals. I am lucky to work again with one of the most committed staffs and supportive clients that I have enjoyed in 36 years of developing and producing events. The dedication and resources brought by our staff of Liz and Andrea to this task has made our Home Team a production management dream. The tireless efforts of Erma of Murphy Productions and Publicity in developing and administrating the lectures, demos and entertainment as well as the Expo’s awesome publicity and advertising campaign is without equal. Last, but certainly not least, is our relationship with Marin Builders Association, its management, staff, committees and board, which has been exceptional. They have been completely engaged in this project, constantly providing encouragement and support. We are your Marin Home & Garden Expo “Home Team” and we hope you enjoy the show. < —Steve Bajor, CEO • Pacific Expositions

Allison with HGTV’s celebrity judges Mike Holmes and Scott McGillivray and others during the ‘All American Handyman’ competition.

A

llison Oropallo was a Novato High School instructor in architecture, woodshop and engineering for several years. She also taught evening courses in Terra Linda for the ROP construction program. Allison is dedicated to community and is passionately focused on improving technology education in schools. After California state budget cuts, industrial technology education programs across the state were effectively minimized, and she took a job in Arlington, Massachusetts, as a middle school technology education educator. Last fall Allison appeared on HGTV’s, All American Handyman show and was the first female to ever make it to the finals. She was voted fan favorite by the country. She has also appeared on a DIY webisode on behalf of an HGTV designer, Shelly Lynch-Sparks. Allison strongly

emphasizes the need of confidence and motivation for females to participate in hands-on knowledge and fields. She is dedicated to illustrating that females can do anything. Allison is also a former Division-I hockey player and a DIY’er since youth. She has participated in renovations of countless projects, including houses, apartments and schools. As a guest speaker this year she will be discussing her experiences on HGTV’s, All American Handyman show and as a female educator teaching in a male-dominated field. She will share her thoughts on the importance of hands-on courses for students in this country and how California should bring these programs back into the spotlight and make them a priority. he Marin History Museum will present a display, featuring items from its artifact collection, of a Victorian Parlor common in many homes throughout Marin in the 1850s. Parlors were also known as “sitting rooms” or “drawing rooms” — short for “withdrawing room.” By any name it was a place where guests could sit comfortably, read, embroider, take tea or just talk. In many large Victorian-era homes the parlor was so perfectly decorated that it was only opened on Sundays or to receive
