Musings from the Festival Executive Director
I
am a true believer in the need and value of events and celebrations that spring from the heart of a Community. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival is exactly that. Founded in 1957, The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival was created as a celebration of Mill Valley’s unique artistic identity, social values and the wonderful Fall season. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival is a Magical combination of its’ sumptuous heritage wrapped up in the present. The Festival offers a truly wonderful and engaging opportunity of Discovery for all who participate and attend. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival is arguably the oldest arts festival in the Western United States. It is rated one of the top 10 fine arts and craft shows in the Northwest. The Festival attracts over 140 fine artists, many We all hope local and others from as far as Hawaii and Canayou enjoy the da. The dedication and passion of each for their result of our art and craft is what defines the Festival. The Festival showcases our wealth of our efforts. local performing artists, many having realized national stature. It provides them important exposure and the opportunity to perform for old and new friends on their home turf. The Festival helps supports community art projects and scholarships for the public schools and provides important promotion and fund raising opportunities for our local non-profit organizations. The Festival is designed, planned and produced by a volunteer Committee composed of local artists and involved residents along with its dedicated Board of Directors. This structure is unusual to Festival administration and has brought the Bay Area this spectacular event for 56 years. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival continues to be a great source of pride for all of us. The year’s Festival is again the direct result of the time, energy and commitment of our Volunteers. It is a reflection of Mill Valley, both past and present and how sweet it is! Come and enjoy the Festival with us. — Steve Bajor, Executive Director

his year the Board began by considering the identity, (past, present, and future) of the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. There was some amazing research done by a very dedicated MVFAF volunteer, Ms. Lizi Cruz. Lizi put together a Creative Brief, and with the help of Susan Nelson, (long-time volunteer and past Board President) she did extensive interviews to find out what the community thought of the festival. Focus groups were put together and members of the Committee, the Board, and the community were all interviewed. The end result was inspiring. It reinforced much of what we already believed to be true, reminded us of important things that perhaps have not received the attention they deserve, and also shed light on new areas that we have not considered in the past. It came down to four main core tenets: Community, Discovery, Magic, and Fall. The festival is a place where people gather, teach their children about art. This festival brings us together. It’s a place to discover new artists and see what they are creating and the stories behind their pieces. It brings the opportunity to buy art from very talented artist from all around the country. And there’s the magic of the Redwood Grove, where many parents have claimed to see fairies dart past their toddlers. And lastly, Fall, the best time of year for us. It’s beautiful, it’s comforting, it’s when families are beginning a new school year, coming home from summer vacations and getting ready for the year ahead. Our refreshed identity is a work in progress and it is wonderful to have this research under our belts and to move forward with such a clear understanding of what the festival means to you …and to us. I want to thank our community for their insight, commitment, and passion for art and this festival. You helped us see what’s in our hearts and have been so loyal and supportive. It’s a truly amazing festival and I am honored to be a part of it. So please join us for a festive weekend, in the beautiful redwoods and enjoy one of Mill Valley’s greatest art events, the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival! —Sarah Suloff, Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival Board President

Emerging Artist Scholarships 2012 Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival awards four Tam High Students 1st place awarded to Riley Sykes | 2nd place to Rowan Walton & 3rd place to Emily Low Schwenk Michael Osborne Graphic Design Scholarship awarded to Lucas Waldburger to Rhode Island School of Design this year. After attending their Pre-College program during the summer of 2011, I knew that RISD was perfect for me. I am apprehensive of, and looking forward to the next four years. It is a very challenging environment, and I look forward to the pressure. I can’t wait to start my arts education at RISD. I look forward to taking the first steps towards my career as an artist. Emily Low Schwenk Rowan Walson (draw/paint) and Emily Low Schwenk (draw/paint) were awarded 2nd and 3rd place respectively for the Emerging Artist Award. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival committee is very excited to have implemented this scholarship program in 2010 and plans to continue the awards every year to two seniors and one junior who excel in the arts. The Michael Osborn Scholarship is $250 for 2D Design and the three Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival Emerging Artist Scholarships are $500, $100 and $50 for an Advanced Lucas Walburger Placement Studio Art student in either 2D Design, Drawing or 3D portfolio. Unlike most scholarships that go directly to the institution the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival awards are given as cash (check) directly to student to be be used for tuition and art supplies.

T
he Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival offered scholarships to two Tam High Seniors during the Seniors Award Ceremony held in Ruby Scott Gym on May 29, 2012. In addition to the three Emerging Artist Scholarships that started in 2010 a second scholarship, the Michael Osborn Graphic Design award, was added this year. Michael Osborn is a celebrated graphic designer based in San Francisco who has generously offered his services Riley Sykes to the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival over the past few years. Lucas Waldburger was chosen by Mr. Osborn to receive the inaugural award. Lucas spent his sophomore year living with his cousins in Madrid, Spain, which he said, really broadened his spectrum of art. “Given that most exhibits are free of charge to students, I made sure to take advantage of this opportunity. Although my Spanish was pretty weak at first, my love for illustrations helped lower the language barrier. I used my artistic Rowan Walton abilities to connect with individuals and as a way to inspire peers who shared the same interest. Lucas will be attending Santa Barbara City College next fall. The 1st place Emerging Artist Scholarship was awarded to Riley Sykes whose current focus is on drawing. “I am very fortunate to be going

he 2012 promotional poster was designed by award winning graphic designer Michael Osborne of Michael Osborne Design (MOD) in San Francisco. The festival has been very fortunate to have Mr. Osborne’s designs for the 2010, 2011 and current festival poster. MOD also arranged for New Leaf Reincarnation to donate the paper and California Lithographers to donate the printing. Michael’s generosity of time and talent has been an inspiration as well as windfall to the non-profit organization. In his honor, the festival has added The Michael Osborne Graphic Design Scholarship to their Emerging Artists Awards given annually to worthy High School students. “Thank You Michael!” from the 2012 Mill Valley Fall Arts Committee.
