The Festival provides a colorful tapestry of over 145 fine artists and craftspeople from around the Bay Area and as far away as New York and New Mexico. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival was founded in 1957. It was created as a celebration of Mill Valley’s unique artistic identity, social values and wonderful fall season. Our 2013 Festival still holds true to the original vision of its founders and the folks that have been the bearers of the light. They have given the Bay Area this beloved event for 56 years.

welcome to the 57th Annual
mill valley fall arts festival
F
all is here and it’s that lovely time of year when the busyness of summer gives way to a more regular routine among friends and family. Since 1957, Mill Valley has hosted the Fall Arts Festival, organized by members of the community, to introduce and celebrate local artists as well as those coming from farther afield. The Fall Arts Festival began, and remains to be, an opportunity for the community and artists to interact, to discuss and to connect to the creative process. It is also an increasingly rare opportunity to directly support artists—those dedicated to making their visions manifest and sharing them with us—

an experience that once was the way of all transactions and now only happens at special places and special times, like the the Fall Arts Festival. Many of us have attended the Fall Arts Festival year after year, some since childhood. Who could ever forget the peace and beauty of Old Mill Park, a place where time seems to have stood still? It’s a place where we feel at home, meet our friends and neighbors, and celebrate the heritage of arts in Mill Valley. With the art on exhibit, the music from the stage, the giggles from the Children’s Grove, and the lanterns in the trees, the park becomes like a village square from a fairytale. DOUGLAS CHALK Mixed Media, Booth #133
The Board, Committee Members, Volunteers, Sponsors and other Individuals who help make the Fall Arts Festival happen each year are dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of arts in Mill Valley and could not be more excited about the 2013 Festival. Each has contributed their own special skills and expertise in order to create this unique event for the community and I’d like to thank them all for their dedication! Enjoy!

his year’s image artist is Barbara Lawrence.
Marin painter and Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival committee member Barbara Lawrence was chosen from a pool of applicants to represent the festival in all graphic applications including the t-shirt and promotional poster both of which can be purchased at the festival. Barbara’s original painting titled ‘Lantern in the Redwoods’ is 28x23” framed pastel on sanded paper and can be seen in her booth 69.
$10 Posters $20 T-Shirts Men’s, Women’s & Youth sizes $25 Limited Edition Tom Killion T-Shirts. Barbara Lawrence has a saying, “What is life without art?” She devotes every waking moment to making the world just a bit more beautiful. Teaching art is a powerful tool for strengthening one’s own art. “I have been teaching art in Marin for more than fifteen years. As a teacher, I find it thrilling to see a student progress from an awkward beginning to his or her own awakening as an artist. Many of my students have gone on to win awards.” You can see Barbara’s art at the festival in booth 69, in her gallery/studio at Art Works Downtown, 1325 Fourth St. in San Rafael, Studio 2 or online www.BL4art.com

Emerging Artist Scholarships 2013 Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival awards three Tam High Students
T
wo Tamalpias High graduates and one entering senior were awarded the 2013 Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival Emerging Artist Scholarship for excellence in art. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival committee implemented this scholarship program in 2010 and continues to offer the awards every year to two seniors and one junior who excel in the arts. The Michael Osborn Scholarship is $250 for 2D Design and the MVFAF Emerging Artist Scholarships are $500 given to an Advanced Placement Studio Art student in either 2D Design, Drawing or 3D portfolio. Unlike most scholarships that go directly to the institution, the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival awards are given a directly to the student to be be used for tuition and art supplies.
Madeleine Sandrolini was the Michael Osbourne Graphic Design award winner. “Illustration has always been an art form that comes most naturally to me. As of now, I want my art to be understood by a group of people, if not, only one person. If that person can understand my message, and connect with it in a way that, even for a second, evokes discomfort or comfort than I feel I have succeeded.” Madeleine will be majoring in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts beginning in September. Madeleine Sandrolini
Sam Gates won the senior Emerging Artist Award in photography.
Claire Talkoff was the junior award winner. Her field of study is photography.
“I’ve always been interested in the arts. After a trip to Africa when I was thirteen, I discovered photography. Upon returning home, I taught myself all I could about digital photography and bought my own camera. Eventually, I transitioned to black and white film after enrolling in an advanced photo class at Tamalpais High School. While at Tam, I also joined the sailing team, racing dinghies throughout California, and making documentaries as part of the Academy of Integrated Humanities and New Media (AIM)”.
“A friend once said to me that “photography is like acting in stills”. To me, that means that every photograph tells a story. When I shoot portraiture, I always try to tell a story through expressions, locations, or props. I try to imagine that I have to show a whole world and story through the photograph that I am taking. I have especially loved shooting fairy tales. Fairy tales are rich with varying characters, locations, morals, and, of course, magic. Being able to capture this in a still photograph is something I strive for.” Clarie will be a senior at Tam in the fall.
Sam will be attending Tufts University in the fall where he hopes to major in Engineering Psychology with a minor in Multimedia Arts. And intends to continue sailing while also pursuing his passion for photography and filmmaking.

JUDGES Bill Abright Mr. Abright has taught ceramics at the College of Marin in Kentfield, CA since 1975, and has been influential in the lives of many artists. He has exhibited throughout the U.S., and his work is in many private and museum collections. Leslie Allen Allen is described as a painter’s painter who approaches each canvas without preconceptions. Clearly influenced by California painters Richard Diebenkorn and Frank Lobdell, Allen’s lyrical sense and gestural marks also relate her work to the New York abstractionists. Hap Sakwa is one of the premiere jewelry photographers in the United States. An established artist in his own right, Mr. Sakwa’s art work has been acquired by numerous private and public collections, including The Museum of Modern Art - NY and The Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
