Happy New Year, Marin—and thanks! As 2013 fades in the rear view and the New Year glows in the headlights, we at the Pacific Sun would like to wish everyone a happy 2014. I’m now in my second year as owner and publisher of this 50-years-young publication, and consider it no small honor to lead the Sun into our next 50 years in a county known for its history, attitude, generosity, idiosyncrasy and jaw-dropping views. It’s been an incredible year. I’d like to say a big THANK YOU to our staff—working at a newspaper is usually fun, hopefully rewarding, but rarely easy—who somehow manage to get us off to the presses week in and week out (and online at pacificsun.com, of course) with a great attitude, and an even greater sense of humor. Another thank you is in order for our advertisers, whose loyal support allows us to do what we do best—inform, report, editorialize, endorse (or not), entertain and advocate for Marin and its community. And, finally, a special thanks to Marin—for welcoming me to the county, reading the Sun, caring about the community, and supporting our local advertisers who help make the Pacific Sun possible. We look forward to 2014—with your support (and a little luck) it will be one of our finest years ever! Happy New Year, Bob Heinen Publisher & Owner

››LETTERS We bet the strawberry-fish makes for an interesting rhubarb!

In the course of researching the safety of genetically modified (GM) foods, I have become aware of a lot of confusion regarding foods produced through selective breeding vs. genetic engineering (GE). Many people think they are the same-they are not. For centuries farmers have used selective breeding of plants and animals to develop desirable traits, such as drought tolerance, increased yields, disease resistance, or improved taste. This is done through cross pollination, grafting and/or selective breeding within closely related species (e.g. two varieties or corn, or between a plum and an apricot) with a shared evolutionary origin. In genetic engineering, genetic material from one or more species (including viruses, bacteria, plant, animal and human) is artificially inserted in a laboratory into a completely different species (e.g. fish genes into strawberries). The process is unpredictable and dangerous, and can lead to unexpected allergies, toxins, new viruses and bacteria, and new diseases. Over 50 countries in the world require labeling of genetically modified foods, for good reason. Surveys consistently show that 80 to 90 percent of people want GM food labeled. Yet GE companies don’t want us to know these foreign organisms are in our food. Why not? If genetically modified foods are the safe, wonderful products GM companies claim, why are they afraid to put it on the label? At the very least, consumers should be informed

of what goes into their food and products such as clothing and bedding, that may contain allergens or other substances that may have adverse health effects-either immediately or over time-so that they can make educated decisions. Until we have assurance that GM foods are safe, as determined by long-term research and scientific evidence produced by objective agencies that do not stand to profit from the results, we need to boycott GM foods and insist on accurate labeling. I will be boycotting these foods and I will do my best to inform as many people as possible of the dangers of GM foods so that they too may join the movement for truth in our food industry. Lynette Carlton, Fairfax

Until there’s GMO labeling, be careful that your pie has been properly fileted.

A chain reaction

I moved to Marin County because it is known around the country as a Bicycle Mecca. I was amazed at how bad the roads are and how narrow, but very pleased at how bike friendly the people are. This is the best area I have ever lived as far as sharing the road. It seems to be second nature in most of the places I ride. There is a very good bicycle infrastructure here and lots of bike paths and routes. I have ridden 1,600 miles in Marin County since the end of June. I have been drawn off road by the opportunities here. I have been reading a lot lately about bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. I realize that we have a LOT of competing jurisdictions here in Marin and that getting them all to work together is not easy. Of course there are competing ideas. What I have read suggests that a comprehensive bike-pedestrian plan is a boon to an area because of a number of reasons. I just read a big study in the Journal of Preventive Medicine. The findings of this study include benefits like the following: When there is a comprehensive system of bike/ped paths, routes and such, the number of serious injuries on the road plummets by as much as 40-50 percent. This is due to all the traffic-calming techniques used in bike/ped infrastructure planning, and also there is a reduction in the number of cars on the road. So, of course, there is a green advantage and an improvement in carbon footprint. I would like to express my support of the work of the Transportation Alternatives for Marin and their Strategic Plan. I hope to see this completed. Brian Oldham, Tiburon

Isn’t this the original plot to Shakespeare’s ‘Tempest’?!

I am writing to finally tell you about my affair/relationship with Anne Francis, the late film star. Many years ago, my late wife and I were on a cruise ship when we discovered that Anne was vacationing there as well. In fact, we invited her to dinner and we all had a great time. However, my wife and I were awakened late one night by an emergency call by the captain that the ship was going down. Unfortunately, I was unable to reach or save my wife in the water, as most of the rest of us narrowly escaped. I floundered around in the water for most of the night, and when I awoke at dawn I found myself thoroughly exhausted on the beach of a remote uninhabited island. For many days I encountered no one in my search for food and drinking water. On the 11th day, however, I came upon one other survivor of the sinking— Anne Francis! To make this story short, we ended up helping each other survive,

and eventually ended up having a mutual relationship, as we waited for an eventual rescue. One day, I discovered a suitcase moored on the beach, possibly part of the wreckage of the sunken cruise ship. Upon opening it, I discovered it full of a man’s suit and clothing. Then I asked Anne if she wouldn’t mind donning the man’s outfit. A bit reluctantly, she agreed. Then I asked her if she wouldn’t mind my calling her “Bob.” Since we were so intimate and trusting of each other, she agreed happily. Then I said to Bob: “Hey, Bob, I’ve been doing Anne Francis!” And if you believe that... Craig Whatley, San Rafael

Francis, ready to populate her new island home with Craig Whatley, letter-to-the-editor writer from San Rafael.

Stig’ a fork in it!

I’m writing regarding last week’s story on Section 8 housing [“Behind the Section 8 Ball,” Dec. 6] and, specifically, this statement: “‘Typically,’ said Rick Roose, the vice president of the National Association for the Mentally Ill’s Marin chapter, ‘mentally ill residents are stigmatized.’” The above statement is irresponsible. The claim is atypical. We are 20 percent of society, we earn to the millions, hold every university degree, and every professional, whiteand blue-collar job. We are a very broad demographic, no single descriptor can be applied to us. No editor is obligated to repeat any claim of “stigma,” in fact, it is unethical to do so, no matter who asserts one and no matter against whom. The National Alliance on Mental Illness, changed its name many years ago to remove the caricature, “the” mentally ill. Harold A. Maio, retired Mental Health editor Editor’s note: Thanks for writing Harold! We’re in agreement that we’d love to see a day when there were no stig ... er, you know, attached to mental illness. But even the National Alliance on Mental Illness thinks one exists. They even have a campaign to “fight stigma” (“become a StigmaBuster!”) in order to end what they call “inaccurate and hurtful representations of mental illness.” To deny the unfortunate reality of it only slows progress toward educating folks against perpetuating any stig ... er, you know.

A cold, hard inconvenient truth Huffman decries annual winter flurry of climate change denial by Jacob Shafe r

Snow—certifiable proof of both God, and the ‘hoax’ that is global warming?

I

t’s become a holiday tradition at Fox News, between firing shots in the war on Christmas, to claim that cold weather disproves climate change. “It’s a good thing they changed the name of their movement from global warming to climate change,” Tim Phillips, spokesman for the arch-conservative Americans For Prosperity, opined as the Fox ticker displayed headlines about record-low temperatures. “Because they would look even more out of touch than they do today.” This isn’t a new phenomenon. Back in 2009, anti-coal demonstrators marched on Washington in the midst of a cold snap. Speaking on Fox’s News Watch, conservative columnist Jim Pinkerton scoffed, “You notice how the green left is no longer talking about global warming? They prefer to talk about climate change, because then anything that happens they can say, ‘See, that proves our theory.’” Pinkerton went on to call climate change “the biggest hoax of our lifetime,” and to add with a chuckle that snow falling on the protestors was “proof there is a God.” Flash forward to the present day. Rep. Jared Huffman, Marin’s congressman, stands on the House floor

Global-warming deniers have Republican strategist Frank Luntz to thank for coming up with the more elastic-sounding ‘climate change.’

imploring his colleagues to ignore the blizzard of climate change denial. “The weather outside is frightful, and if you listen to certain conservative media networks, you hear something not so delightful,” Huffman began (thankfully he did not break into song). “You hear that because it is snowing there must not be climate change. This is unscientific, it is reductive, but that’s what climate deniers say this time of year.” Huffman laid out the statistics—winter temperatures have inched up more than a half-degree since 1970—and issued the familiar warnings about drought and unpredictable, potentially dire weather. “Our water supply, our food supply and our future will all be impacted by climate change,” the freshman legislator concluded. “So let’s lead.” Here’s something Huffman didn’t say that’s worth noting: As wrongheaded as it is to claim chilly temperatures negate climate change, it’s equally wrongheaded to claim “liberals” invented the term. In fact, “climate change” was first introduced as an alternative to “global warming” by Republican strategist Frank Luntz in 2002. In an internal memo focused on environmental messaging—specifically how to soften the perception that the Bush administration was anti-environment—Luntz suggested: “Climate change is less frightening than global warming. As one focus group participant noted, ‘Climate change sounds like you’re going from Pittsburg to Fort Lauderdale.’ While global warming has catastrophic connotations attached to it, climate change suggests a more controllable and less emotional challenge.” Surely at least some of the talking heads at Fox are aware of this quote; the memo has been widely circulated. Then again, when did the facts ever get in the way of a little hot air? Y

12 Years a Slave best picture, say Bay Area critics In the end, the gravity of slavery was more pressing than the Gravity of outer space. The San Francisco Film Critics Circle has named 12 Years a Slave the Best Picture of 2013, and its star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, as Best Actor for his performance as Solomon Northup, a free man pressed into captivity in 1850s America. The SFFCC is comprised of 31 film critics from throughout the Bay Area—the Pacific Sun, the SF Chronicle, and the San Jose Mercury News, among them. Meeting last week at the Variety Club Preview Room on Market Street in San Francisco, the group of critics discussed the merits of the year’s films and performances. In the end, a consensus was reached that director Steve McQueen’s powerful account of Northup’s autobiography (also winner of Best Adapted Screenplay for John Ridley) was the year’s most impressive cinematic achievement—barely nudging out Alfonso Cuaron’s critically acclaimed thriller Gravity. Nonetheless, Gravity collected the most awards—four in all—for its own stellar achievements. Cuaron won Best Director honors, as well as sharing Best Film Editing with Mark Sanger. The visually stunning story of an astronaut’s survival in terrifying circumstances also won over the S.F. critics in the categories of Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki) and Production Design (Andy Nicholson). Best Actress Cate Blanchett dazzled the San Francisco voters with her performance as the titular fallen socialite in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, while Best Supporting acting awards went to Jennifer Lawrence as troubled, troublesome wife Rosalyn Rosenfeld in American Hustle and James Franco as the wild man Alien in Spring Breakers. Among the other honorees: Best Documentary, The Act of Killing, which creatively exposed the recent-history evil of Indonesian death-squad thugs, Best Foreign Language Picture Blue Is the Warmest Color, a French story of first love in a lesbian relationship, and Best Animated Feature Frozen, Disney’s entertaining musical take on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen. As per tradition, the group issued a special citation to celebrate an under-the-radar film, in this case Andrew Bujalski’s 1980s throwback, Computer Chess. The annual Marlon Riggs Award, honoring courage and innovation in the world of Bay Area film, this year is shared by Ryan Coogler, in honor of local story Fruitvale Station, and Christopher Statton for his inspiring work on behalf of the independent Roxie Theater. Marin town named one of ‘most exciting small cities’ in America San Rafael is excited—and it just can’t hide it! At least it can’t hide it from Movoto.com, a San Mateo-based real estate blog that ranks cities for their livability, affordability and, apparently, excitability. The survey based its rankings on such criteria as a city’s amount of live music, nightlife, fast food restaurants and youth population. Over all, San Rafael came in at 11, behind such famously exciting small cities as Hoboken, N.J. (first), Lakewood, Ohio (seventh) and Sarasota, Fla. (tenth). Small cities were defined as having a population of under 60,000. San Rafael finished particularly strong in the live music category (third) and percentage of restaurants that are NOT fast food (third). Marin’s county seat lagged, however, in the nightlife rankings (41) and number of young residents (57). Earlier this year, Motovo named Oakland as the overall most exciting city in America.

and equestrians over rights to Marin’s crowded trails. Drakes Bay Oyster Company’s ongoing fight with the feds to reverse the congressionally imposed expiration of its lease made headlines all year. But the oyster farm’s plea to halt the closing of its mariculture operation appeared dead in the water Sept. 3—when the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an earlier district court decision that would ostensibly force the farm to honor the lapse of its lease and shut down. Drakes is appealing. Stay tuned. Improved bicycle and pedestrian access appeared to have won the day Sept. 26 when Transportation Authority of Marin officials approved a $39.6 million plan for Highway 101 improvements at the Greenbrae interchange—a dicey traffic weave that everyone agreed needs an overhaul, but few found consensus in a plan to do it. Government shutdown in October hits home in Marin, as the Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (including Muir Woods) close up shop to await an end to the latest round of partisan bickering in Congress. Measure F, the $394 million obligation bond to upgrade Marin General Hospital to state seismic standards, is passed by voters Nov. 5, with 68 percent approval (it needed 66.7 percent)—meaning, for all intents and purposes, Marin’s going to build itself a brand-spankin’-new hospital. “Alphabet Killer” Joseph Naso’s lengthy trial comes to an end late summer with a guilty verdict and, then, a Nov. 22 death sentence from Marin Superior Court Judge Andrew Sweet, who describes the serial killer as “evil and disturbed,” his actions “abhorrent and repugnant” and saying his presence on earth has made the world “a worse place.” Naso, 80, was convicted in August in the killings of Roxene Roggasch, 18, whose body was found in Fairfax in 1977; Carmen Colon, 22, whose body was found in Port Costa in 1978; and Pamela Parsons, 38, and Tracy Tafoya, 31, whose bodies were discovered in Yuba County in 1993 and 1994. Mariculture in the Point Reyes National Seashore? The debate made national headlines.

Ten big local stories

A proposal for a mixed-use development on the five-acre site of the Marinwood Plaza Shopping Center came to a head in June, with many Marinwood and Lucas Valley residents staunchly opposing the idea of affordable housing in their neighborhoods, and launching a controversial (and ultimately unsuccessful) drive to recall District 1 Supervisor Susan Adams.

Joseph Naso tried to present himself as a misunderstood artist with a flair for the ladies... the jury was not convinced.

A bizarre traffic incident on July 7 between a Marin County Sheriff ’s deputy and a “suspicious” African-American man in Marin City leads to three bullets in the arm of 44-year-old Chaka Grayson, stones being hurled at Deputy Evan Kubota, a neighborhood-wide manhunt, and an eyebrow-raising investigation into the officer’s actions by the Novato Police Department where Kubota’s wife works. Kubota is eventually cleared of wrongdoing, and the Marin City community’s trust in authorities grows ever dimmer. Former Ross Valley Sanitary District manager Brett Richards has his sojourn to an idyllic South Pacific resort town cut abruptly short July 11, when he’s arrested by the Philippine authorities on several outstanding FBI warrants, including one charge of embezzling $350,000 from the RVSD. No less than the future of the county was at stake—or so it seemed— July 18 when the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) approved Plan Bay Area, inciting critics to predict the transitoriented development plan would turn Marin into an Eastern European-like conglomeration of authoritarian-run housing blocks or, worse, Richmond. A pair of equestrians cross paths July 27 with some bike-riding kids on a nobikes-allowed county trail in Novato. Lisa Zeppegno is thrown from her horse, breaking her back, and the kids flee the scene— setting off the latest (and one of the most intense) debate between cyclists, hikers

Ten 2013 movies worth talking about Dallas Buyers Club Matthew McConaughey stars as an HIV-positive cowboy who begins to suspect that gays aren’t the fey stereotypes he’d been led to believe—that is until he meets Jared Leto’s transgendered Rayon, a living embodiment of those very stereotypes. Her Joaquin Phoenix enters into a bizarre sexual relationship with his computer operating system in this Spike Jonze film that’s set in the future but, quite frankly given the subject matter, sounds like a lot of hook-ups going on today. Gravity Sandra Bullock and George Clooney star in this extreme version of locking yourself out of your car. American Hustle Director David O. Russell takes a stab at the East Coast criminal underworld, and the result is the best Martin Scorsese movie in years. The Wolf of Wall Street Director Martin Scorsese takes a stab at broad parody, and the result is the worst David O. Russell movie in years. 12 Years a Slave A free northern black man is kidnapped into plantation slavery in a harrowing story that pretty much puts to rest any question as to whether “peculiar institution” is an understatement. like it. The amazing thing is the music. On this block alone there’s the guy who was the lead guitarist for Huey Lewis and the News, and next to him a whole band lives—the whole family’s a band, and then two doors down there’s a guy who does world music. Reminds me of when I was in Barcelona (researching a story). Every third person you meet is an architect. Here every third person is either a musician or wishes they had been. How did you get together with Phil Jackson? Barbara and I were invited to be on the editorial board of a magazine called Tricycle, which is a pretty prominent Buddhist magazine now but at the time it was just starting, they had about 300 subscribers. They invited me because I worked at Sports Illustrated and Helen Tworkov said she wanted to do sports stories because Zen teachers are always talking about sports. I found that to be true—a lot of Zen teachers are real sports fanatics. And so I said if you find somebody to interview I’ll do it for you, but I’m not going to spend my time trying to find some famous person ... two weeks later they called and said you won’t believe this, but Phil Jackson is a subscriber and we just wrote him a letter and he said he’d do an interview. That year Michael Jordan had left to play baseball and—this is classic Phil Jackson—he turned down The New

leven Rings by Phil Jackson and Hugh Delehanty was published earlier this year. The book, subtitled “The Soul of Success,” about Jackson’s coaching the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers to 11 national championships, is laden with Zen teaching and philosophies, which helped Jackson negotiate high-pressure sports with outsize talents such as Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal, among others. It’s the second book for Jackson with collaborator Hugh Delehanty, who has worked as a writer and editor for Sports Illustrated, People, the Utne Reader, the AARP magazine and many others. He moved to Marin with his wife, writer and editor Barbara Graham, last year. The Pacific Sun’s Julie Vader, who worked with Delehanty at Sports Illustrated in the late 1980s, recently sat down with him in the sunny kitchen of his newly renovated San Anselmo home. You’ve lived in Boston, San Francisco, New York, Minneapolis, Washington, D.C.—how did you end up in San Anselmo? Point Reyes is one of our favorite places in the world, and Barbara and I thought we wanted to live there, but it’s just too far out. We have grandchildren in Sausalito and we have a lot of friends here. We’ve reinvented our lives so many times we didn’t want to do that again. And I’m really glad we moved here. I didn’t know Marin very well, but I really

York Times, GQ, Esquire, The Wall Street Journal, you name it—and gave an interview to Tricycle magazine. We hit it off, just one of those things. So we kind of talked about doing a book. He said, “I don’t want to do the ‘I was the coach of Michael Jordan’ book.” That’s a terrible title. [laughs] Right after the Tricycle interview there were a lot of magazines that did stories about Buddhism, and Phil had never come out as a practicing Buddhist before then so it was kind of one of those moments, so then we got a contract and did Sacred Hoops. What is the process of working with him? I sort of have to channel him when I write. We spent a lot of time interviewing, a lot of time. Phil is really good at abstract concepts, he’s really inter-

ested in big ideas. But the players were incredibly astute at articulating what they learned from him. And Phil has this polymath kind of mind when he’s always interested in the next idea. He’s good at anecdotes, but not stories—so what I brought to the party was the story line, turning it into a narrative and doing a lot of research with the players. Michael Jordan gave me a lot of insight into him and so did Kobe as well as others. Really a collaborative project. What we wanted this book to be, as well as Sacred Hoops, is kind of an inspiring book. We’re both interested in that. So anyone who reads will be able to coach a team to an NBA title? It’s a how-to? [laughs] I don’t think so ... You know, there’s a huge change that’s happened since we were working at Sports Illustrated. Now sports are 24/7 and the fans know everything. They just know everything, they suck up everything. What I found with the book is people really like to relive this. What we were also trying was to give a sense of how Phil thinks

and how he leads. It’s really unique. He’s done it all intuitively; it’s grown out of his own struggles and in forming his own identity and way of being in the world. And he’s turned that into a way of leadership and in turn he’s inspired players to develop that. I asked Bill Bradley: “So what’s the deal with Phil Jackson? Why’s he so great?” And he said to me “Phil Jackson leads from the inside out, and nobody else in basketball does.” What he meant by that is he leads from his own value system. The other side of that is he lets the players all become who they’re supposed to be. Most coaches in a way they treat players like boys rather than men. It’s more classic in football than in other sports, but it’s common in basketball. You see that all the time. In the book the players really come alive. And I love the image of Shaq beside a lake in Montana jumping on a trampoline. And Kobe really comes out as such a complex, interesting character—what was his reaction to the book? Oh, there was a big to-do about the section comparing him and Michael Jordan, we all knew that, and Kobe said something about apples and oranges. But at least the second half of the book is about Phil’s relationship to Kobe. It’s kind of a love story? [laughs] I don’t know about that ... But they both changed over time. Kobe said 90 percent of what he knows about leadership he learned from Phil Jackson—something he never would have said 10 years ago. Who would this book make a good gift for? When we started writing Sacred Hoops we had a meeting and Phil said I want this to be a book that women will read. I feel the same way about this book. So the title of the book, Eleven Rings, is that to attract women—they’ll think maybe it’s about jewelry? That cover picture had this magic to it. ESPN published the cover picture on Grantland and it had all these people talking about rings. I must admit I spent a lot of time looking at this cover, at the design of the rings. But this book, of course it’s for basketball fans, but it’s also for people who are interested in leadership. What’s been gratifying for me is to hear the number of people in business who read the book. It was number 14 among “leadership” books on Amazon this morning. And it should be. I’m really gratified. It’s also for people who are interested in meditation and enlightenment and in living the life they’re supposed to live. You mean like people in Marin? Yes, people in Marin. For Pete’s sake Goodbye, Mr. O’Toole—an ode to my favorite no-longer-living actor by David te mp l e ton

Celebrating 81 years of service in 2013!

O’Toole’s foul-mouthed, murderous megalomaniac in ‘The Stunt Man’ made quite an impact on the impressionable young Templeton.

eter O’Toole just died!” It’s not quite noon on Sunday, the day after the great Irish actor passed away at the age of 81, and so far five friends have called or emailed to inform me of his passing. Anyone who’s known me for long knows I have a bit of a thing for Peter O’Toole. For the last 35 years or so, Peter O’Toole has been the name I quickly cite whenever asked to reveal my favorite living actor. So, of course, people couldn’t wait to tell me the bad news that Peter O’Toole has died. One acquaintance actually asked me, just seconds after giving me the update, if I’d decided yet who my new favorite living actor is. “What a heartless question,” I replied, adding quickly, “Alan Rickman.” I first saw Lawrence of Arabia when I was 12, watching it on TV one night while battling the flu. I’m sure my fever added to the sense of scorching heat as O’Toole—looking so intense and achingly crazy—rode his camel across the desert. I loved the scene where he snuffs the match between his finger and thumb, his face a bemused blank, showing not the tiniest admission of pain. When fellow officer William Potter attempts the same thing, yelping in pain as he burns the bejeezus out of his finger, he asks Lawrence what the trick is. “The trick, William Potter,” says O’Toole, “is not minding that it hurts.” I loved that—and the next time I came

upon a Peter O’Toole movie, the historical drama Becket, I took note. The charismatic Irishman certainly had a way with lines like, “Let us drink, gentlemen. Let us drink, till we roll under the table in vomit and oblivion.” I purposely practiced saying the words “Let us roll under the table in vomit and oblivion,” attempting to capture the same sense of slurring, hedonistic glee, which must have alarmed my Dad, since I was only 13. Still, it would be another eight years before I would encounter the film that turned Peter O’Toole into my favorite living actor. I was 20, living in Los Angeles, ardently soaking up everything I could learn about film and screenwriting, when Richard Rush’s offbeat comedydrama The Stunt Man hit the theaters. Starring the then 48-year-old O’Toole— who to my barely-adult mind seemed so elegantly elderly—The Stunt Man was to me what dynamite is to a tunnel under construction: a powerful explosion that let in a light I’d never thought possible. Having only recently broken free from a repressively myopic fundamentalist view of the world, I was easily dazzled by the big wide world around me, and Peter O’Toole, as the charismatically driven movie director Eli Cross, was the most dazzling, complicated fictional character I’d ever encountered on screen, with the possible exception of Atticus Finch, of To Kill a Mockingbird. I had often written down the name Atticus Finch,

whenever asked at school to describe those human beings who I found most inspirational, placing Finch in third place behind Jesus of Nazareth and St. Francis of Assisi. Eli Cross, of course, was no saint. And he knew it. In one of the movie’s most famous scenes, Cross swoops through the air in the carriage of a massive mechanical camera crane, trying to convince the jumpy fugitive-from-justice Cameron (Steve Railsback) to take a job as a stuntman in the World War I movie he’s making. The previous stuntman was apparently killed in a car-crash scene gone wrong, and Cross needs to cover up the accident to avoid having his film shut down. When Cameron asks how Cross thinks he can possibly fool the police who are scouring the area looking for him, Cross delivers an unforgettable speech. “How tall is King Kong?” he demands. “Do you not know that King Kong was just three-foot six-inches tall? He only came up to Faye Wray’s belly button! If God could do the tricks we do, he’d be a happy man! What are you afraid of the police for?” The brazen confidence and swagger of Eli Cross was astonishing to me, and I left the theater wanting to be just like him—except for the part about be-

steps out into an unfamiliar world, was to recite lines originally spoken by my favorite living actor. It was a kind of spiritual practice, in a way, reciting Peter O’Toole lines. “It’s Christmas! What shall we hang— the holly or each other?” “Victory? What victory? We’ve won a rock ... in the middle of a wasteland ... on the shore of a poisoned sea!”

ing a murderous megalomaniac. I saw the film nine more times over the next few months. Among other influences, I learned how to swear from The Stunt Man. In the scene where Henry, an assistant director, prematurely calls cut during the filming of a beach battle scene, Cross learns that the camera still had 22 feet of film left. “That’s 22 seconds Henry,” he seethes, “and in 22 seconds I could break your f--king spine! In 22 seconds, I could pinch your head off like a f--king insect and spin it all over the f--ing ground. In 22 seconds, I could put 22 bullets inside your ridiculous gut! What I seem unable to do in 22 seconds ... is to keep you from f--king up my film!” I memorized ever word of that speech. Never had I seen F-bombs delivered with such lyricism and poetic fire. My church friends were quick to deduce that perhaps Peter O’Toole was becoming a bad influence on me. But the true influence of Peter O’Toole was not the way he delivered questionable language or his choice of bad-boy roles. It was the sense of powerful, confident self-acceptance and edgy inner calm that infused every character he played. I so wanted that in my own life, but the best I could do, as I made my tentative

Q:

A woman wrote you about flirting relentlessly with a male classmate who seemed interested in her but may have been too timid to ask her out. You asked her, “If a man can’t endure a possible 10 seconds of rejection, is he the man you want with you when danger rears its head?” Absent a link between shyness and an inability to defend a woman in danger, I think you’re being unfair to shy guys. —Irked

A:

If timidity were useful in defending people in danger, police sergeants would announce to their beat cops, “OK, everybody, go out there and hide in the back seat of your patrol car!” You’re right that physical courage—willingness to risk physical pain—is different from emotional courage: willingness to risk rejection or other social pain. But they’re more related than you think. Brain imaging research by UCLA’s Naomi Eisenberger and Matthew Lieberman finds that the same regions of the brain that are activated by physical pain are activated by social pain, and Eisenberger reports that “individuals who are more sensitive to one kind of pain are also more sensitive to the other.” Further pointing to a connection—what’s good for a sprained ankle seems good for a sprained ego. In research Eisenberger collaborated on, 500 milligrams of acetaminophen (think Tylenol) taken twice daily was actually found to diminish emotional pain. So, no, it isn’t a stretch to suspect that a guy who shrinks from social ouchies might respond to physical danger as if his spirit animal were the breadcrumb. There’s this notion that the shy guy approaches “the chase” like it’s the “lie there like cold salmon,” simply because he isn’t a people person. That actually describes an introvert—somebody energized by being alone and easily overstimulated in a crowd but who isn’t necessarily afraid to hit on a girl he’s interested in. But a shy person, instead of having self-esteem, has “what other people think of me”-esteem. This means a woman’s rejection isn’t just a bummer; it’s a crushing confirmation of his worthlessness as anything more than a container of salable plasma. When a guy’s male role model appears to be grape jelly, it isn’t a woman’s cue to do all the work to make a relationship happen. This is dating, not a pet adoption. Besides, you get what you settle for. A guy desperate for approval is a guy a woman can never count on—to show her who he really is, to stand up for what he believes in, or, maybe, to even know what he believes (without sticking a wet finger in the air). A guy like this isn’t someone a woman can respect and admire. That’s essential, because real love involves having a crush on a person as a human being, not taking pity on him for his shortcomings. The shy guy to have is the one who’s worked on himself and come out the other side —who maybe still fears asking a woman out but manages to do it anyway. This tells her something about her—that he wants her more than he wants to avoid rejection—and something about him: that he has the qualities women look for in a man—courage and character and not just the really basic stuff like a Y chromosome and an ability for point-and-shoot urination.

Q: A:

I went on a first date to a Japanese restaurant. My date kept licking his fingers clean. All his fingers. One by one. He’s otherwise a truly great guy, but I don’t know whether I can date someone with such weird table manners. —Shocked

Coyotes lick their paws for good reason—because there’s no waiter to bring them a warm washcloth in a little dish. When an adult human does this on the first date—the date we all know is scored by a team of invisible judges in the mind of the person we’re with—you really have to wonder. As for whether this guy’s dining behavior will be a deal breaker, when you don’t have an answer, the best answer is usually waiting and collecting information until you do. So go on a few more dates. See whether he sticks his snout in the gravy boat. How you ultimately respond will probably depend on both the strength of your gag reflex and how old you are. Women in their early 20s will ditch a guy if his cowlick grows in the wrong direction. Women in their 50s and beyond understand that “truly great guys” are in short supply, and they come to appreciate the little things in a man, such as a pulse, bladder control, and the ability to remain awake throughout sex.
