Finding a family owned and operated business continuing into a second generation has become a little less common these days – but Paul-Mark Printing made the jump and continues to provide services not always found in today’s printing firm. Back in 1964 Manny and Shirley Lamhut opened up the “mom+pop” operation on South Street in one of Silvert’s Furnitures small buildings. Manny with already 20 years of printing knowledge, a degree in teaching and art did it all. From setting the type to running the presses and finishing the jobs, while Shirley ran the front office, did the billing and later on did “cold” typesetting.

FASTER PRESCRIPTIONS

A half century of service to the community

As the years went on Paul-Mark Printing added employees and equipment servicing small and large businesses with everything from stationery and forms to brochures, books, you name it. With service and quality always the firm’s goal their tagline became; “A Satisfied Customer is Our Best Advertisement.” Indeed many new clients were fostered through the good words of Paul-Mark clientel. • Prescriptions ready in less than 10 minutes! • We accept all major insurance plans including Medicare, Medicaid and others • Flu Shots, Pneumonia & Shingles Vaccination • 10% Off Orthopedic Products • Fax, Copy & Notary Service • Hispanic & Homeopathic products available • Bill Payment Center • Lottery Service

In 1973 the firm needed to relocate, Silvert’s was planning an enlarged showroom and the two adjacent buildings (one and a half occupied by Paul-Mark) were to be demolished to make room for the expansion. The timing was good, with Paul-Mark’s need to add some room, but finding a location in downtown Freehold was not. The firm’s new location ended up, still in the Borough, but in a commercial building on Stokes Street once home to Main Coat and Cloak Company. The new building was well of twice the size of the South Street beginnings, but has an interesting past with part of the structure dating back to the 1800’s and multiple add-ons that enlarged the building through the years. For years someone would visit and wonder if they could purchase a coat from the long gone Continued on page 9

factory. The printing firm continued to grow and in 1975 Mark Lamhut (second generation family member) joined full time after graduating from Freehold Borough High School. Having spent snow days and other occasions having fun at his parent’s business, Mark grew to enjoy the many aspects of art and science that are the building blocks of printing. As the years continued Paul-Mark update the pressroom and more importantly, kept up with prepress advances. Going from hot-metal type to cold-type to phototypesetting. Finally, as the home computer craze began with the Apple II computer, Mark purchase one and grew with it. He began working with the early software until, with the MacIntosh computer and revolutionary software to allow full page layouts, the inclusion of text, graphics and photos in a single file became the norm. Along the way Howard Lamhut, another second generation family member took on the role of Bindery and Finishing supervisor. As a new century began Paul-Mark had grown a bit more, but continued its quest to produce the best product that would satisfy their clients. The pressroom also grew to handle larger sheet sizes, but the major changes in the business was the high technology in the artroom and pre-press areas.

but continues to meet the deadlines with quality products whether a simple business card or a very involved die cut promotional piece. Today you can still see the first printing press owned by PaulMark, still being used. Right next to it you will see ultra-modern digital presses from Canon, Ricoh and Xante which produce amazing quality output for everything from simple forms to books and brochures, the list is endless. The art department sends files for printing directly to the digital presses. If jobs need to be printed on the offset presses in the back of their shop, the art department sends files to a platesetter that makes the press plates directly from the digital files – a far cry from the early days of printing. Mark and Elfriede do have a life outside of the printing firm. Both are involved with Center Players, she does tickets, he handles the sound and light design for their plays. Howard also runs Lamhut Photography and has been riding with the Jersey Shore Cycle Club for decades. Mark and Elfriede also are involved with the Downtown Concert Series at St. Peter’s Church and have volunteered for years with the Spooktacular Committee. Mark has been a member of the downtownfreehold.com committee in the past and was a long time board member and Chair for what is now the Monmouth Regional Chamber of Commerce. He also was given the Freehold Borough Mayor’s, John G. McGackin Renaissance Award recognition in 2017.

Mark found his wife Elfriede while volunteering for one of his If you would like to learn more about Paul-Mark Printing go to many organizations, Center Players.
