Freehold Borough officials, residents, guests will celebrate centennial in 2019 by Matthew Sockol

“The two towns gradually became quite different from each other,” Coyne said. “The township remained mostly farms until the 1960s. A century after becoming its own municipality, Freehold Borough maintains an identity all its own and that identity will be celebrated The population of the township did not surpass the borough until the early 1970s. The population of the township is now almost three times during 2019. that of the borough.” This year marks the centennial anniversary of the official incorporation of Freehold Borough on Sept. 15, 1919. To celebrate and In the most recent U.S. census (2010), Freehold Borough’s population recognize the town’s 100th birthday, the Freehold Borough Centennial was reported as 12,052 residents and Freehold Township’s population was reported as 36,184 residents. In 2016, Freehold Borough’s Committee has planned a series of activities and events. population was estimated at 11,891 residents and Freehold Township’s “We look forward to the events planned for this year and the population was estimated at 35,623 residents. recognition of the borough’s 100th anniversary,” Mayor Nolan Higgins “We here in the borough are very proud of our community, where said. “Our annual events will all recognize our 100th birthday.” many of us have deep roots, and this year we are celebrating our The area of the county seat of Monmouth County which would distinctive mixture of village intimacy and urban diversity,” Coyne eventually become Freehold Borough was part of Freehold Township said. until a divide formed between residents who lived near the county courthouse on Main Street and residents who lived on the farms that Borough Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer said, “This is an important surrounded the “downtown,” according to Muriel Smith, a member of and exciting year for Freehold as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the borough. We will be celebrating 100 years the centennial committee. of creating, defending and protecting our identity. I love Freehold The divide, according to Kevin Coyne, who serves as the borough’s Borough and I cannot wait for us to show how profoundly proud we historian, was primarily attributed to municipal services. Residents all are of being a part of and sharing our beloved community.” of the courthouse area did not want to pay to keep extending water and sewer lines farther out from the center of town. Smith said the dispute over the expenditure of tax dollars was heightened when a polio epidemic swept through the area in 1916. Eventually, a referendum was held on July 18, 1919, during which residents voted on a proposal to separate the courthouse area from the farmlands. When the votes were counted, 398 people had voted in favor of separation and 98 people had voted against separation, according to Coyne. The courthouse area and surrounding neighborhoods left Freehold Township and were officially incorporated as Freehold Borough on Sept. 15, 1919. Smith explained that the courthouse area retained the government buildings and the title of the county seat of Monmouth County when it became Freehold Borough. New municipal buildings were established in Freehold Township, which encircles the borough, after the split.

PEOs Help Companies Grow Faster s every business owner knows, managing employees is a huge, time-consuming task that has a direct impact on your bottom line. Proper management is far more than collecting some time cards, approving days off and picking a health insurance plan. No one can be an expert on everything, every time. The HR field is vast and covers so many diverse topics that it would be virtually impossible to know it all. A Professional Employer Organization (PEO) is a group of professionals who are experts in every area that human resources encompass from safety to compliance to benefits and payroll that can guide a business owner every step of the way. A PEO can fill in a business owner’s knowledge gaps, making them look like the star business owner they are. Perhaps they can take the lead on compliance issues, an area of HR that is constantly evolving and shifting, making it very hard to keep up with and a full-time job in itself. From keeping track of and understanding healthcare mandate updates to updating the employee handbook, an off-site HR pro can handle every administrative task to free you up to focus on higher-value tasks such as long-term strategic planning to grow your business.

A

Better Benefits for Business Growth By partnering with a PEO, you get to enjoy the shared purchasing power that allows us to offer unheard of benefits at a manageable cost. When you’re picking your benefits package for the upcoming year, it’s likely that your main consideration is bang for your buck. You want to get your workers the best possible array of attractive options at a price that you – and they – can afford. While this line of thinking is certainly smart, you may be missing one key consideration: how can these benefits grow your business? In order to move your business forward, you need to have the best and brightest minds working for you. You need innovative thinkers, leaders in their field, and a handful of folks who can put these thoughts into action, smashing your goals. The bad part? Just about everyone is looking to add these folks to their roster. To a candidate, the one thing that can set you apart from your competitors – when all other aspects of the job in question are comparable – is the breadth of your benefits plan. The crux of a good plan lies in a package that includes – at a minimum – health insurance and a 401K or other retirement offering. However, additional attractive offerings include dental and vision coverage, health savings or flexible savings accounts, paid time off, disability insurance (both short and long-term) and life insurance, to name a few of the most popular options. Beyond giving you the pick of the candidate litter, providing strong benefits offerings can help you to retain those workers you spent so much time wooing. This, in turn, decreases turn-over costs – which an analysis by the Center for American Progress suggested ends up costing businesses a whopping 213 percent of the lost employees’ annual salary. Further, those star employees generally contribute to a positive work environment that is more productive and encourage those around them to work even harder so they too can rise to the level of a top performer. Employee Development Another key perk often overlooked – but so crucial to attracting and retaining the top talent and thrusting your business forward – is that of the opportunity to upskill your workers. Upskilling refers to the idea of providing additional training opportunities to your existing workforce. Whether you’re teaching them a new skill, how to take on a new role, or simply how to do their existing jobs more effectively, you are saving money by not having to train a new worker from scratch. Educating your employees also helps close the revolving door of disgruntled workers who feel they have stagnated in their role. Safety Safety at work should be a focus for every business owner every day. Employers pay an estimated almost $1 billion per week for direct workers’ compensation costs alone, according to the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Health and Safety Administration. This $1 billion can be broken into two categories: direct costs, such as workers’ compensation payments, medical expenses or legal costs and indirect costs that include loss of productivity, accident investigations, hiring and training replacement employees and low morale.

10

Serious non-fatal work-related injuries cost $58.5 billion in worker’s compensation costs, according to the 2018 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index, which has been done for 18 years. This is a slight increase from 2017 when total costs of all disabling workplace injuries fell to $59.9 billion in 2017, from $61.9 billion in 2016, according to last year’s Index. The leading single cause of injury is overexertion, which costs businesses $13.67 billion in direct costs, followed by falls (two different types) at a combined direct cost of $17.08 billion. Workplace accidents, especially those with serious injury or fatality, have impacts that ripple throughout the company as those who are impacted deal with psychological stress that may require years of counseling or the inability to return to the worksite for a significant period of time, which presents additional costs to the company through the abrupt loss of skilled workers, according to the American Society of Safety Engineers White Paper on Return on Safety Investment. Not only is it good for business to develop a comprehensive safety program – because we’ve all heard of companies going bankrupt on account of one safety slip up – but it’s also important for giving your employees the reassurance that someone is looking out for their health and wellbeing on the job. Payroll In a perfect world, running payroll would be as simple as hitting a button and watching a series of perfect checks roll off the printer. However, any business owner who has ever played a role in generating payroll will tell you that the process is NEVER quite that easy. Between tracking down time cards, ensuring time is logged correctly and needing to have a strong baseline knowledge of federal, state, and local laws regarding pay practices, the art of running payroll is rife with potential for errors, some of which have serious consequences. A payroll professional can ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws, sort out employee classifications, navigate overtime rules and wage garnishments of all kinds while keeping proper records. All this information is stored in an information management system that is tailored to fit the unique needs of your company and to compile and analyze the information that matters most to you, not a jumble of files in the corner cabinet.
