REASONS WHY SUMMER CAMP IS A GOOD CHOICE FOR KIDS

Camp gives kids a chance to get outside, doing physical activities while making new friends.

S

ummer vacation offers students a respite from lessons and the routine of school. Children might once have eagerly awaited those final days of classes so they could lounge poolside, skip rocks across ponds and spend the long days of the season playing with friends. But many of today’s youngsters spend much of their summer vacations indoors playing with their digital devices. Perhaps that’s why one of the last vestiges of the classic summer vacation escape - summer camp - remains such a viable option for parents who want their children to get outdoors once the school year ends. Although kids needn’t be in camp all summer long, a

fill in with noncompetitive opportunities to succeed. Campers learn independence, decision-making skills and the ability to thrive outside of the shadow of their parents, siblings or other students.

1. Explore talents. Summer camps help young people explore their unique interests and talents. Under an organized, yet often easygoing, camp schedule, kids can dabble in sports, arts and crafts, leadership, community support, and so many other activities that may not be fully available to them elsewhere.

4. Try new things. Camp gives children the chance to try new things, whether that’s learning to cook, exploring new environments or embracing a new sport or leisure activity. Opening oneself up to new opportunities can build character and prove enlightening for children.

· Fill out the enrollment package completely. Each camp has its own requirements for registration. Expect to submit some personal information, including a medical background and proof of insurance, names and numbers of emergency contacts, and any other pertinent information as it applies to the camper. This may include allergies, fears, physical or mental disabilities, or even preferences in camp courses. · Establish payment schedules. Summer camps vary in price. The ACA says camp costs range from $100 to more than $1,500 per week. However, many accredited camps offer some sort of financial assistance for children from families with limited financial means. If cost is a factor, be sure to broach the subject. · Prepare children for the physical challenges a camp may present. Summer camp activities may be rigorous, and campers may need to be cleared by a physician before starting. Be sure to schedule your child a physical and bring along any pertinent forms. Children also can increase their levels of physical activity compared to the often sedentary nature of winter. Such preparation can prevent injuries when engaging in outdoor and physical activities. · Shop for supplies. Camps are likely to provide a list of 00222928.3.36x3.0.0520.malaga.indd

Outdoors & Independent: Childhood Essentials

By Andy Pritikin – Owner/Director of Liberty Lake Day having my daughter purchase two round-trip tickets at the train station. She stepped up to the ticket window, and placed Camp, President of American Camp Association NY/NJ her pocketbook on the ground BEHIND her, in front of the hen I drove my son to his pee-wee soccer game the dozen other people waiting on line. Think about all of the things that we did as kids, that our kids either don’t or can’t do. I’ve got a BIG THREE, starting with… #1- Spending time outside for hours, climbing trees (and fences), or whatever - alone or with other kids. In her book “There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather,” Linda Akeson McGurk compares the vast differences between raising children in the USA and Sweden, comparing American children in day cares and pre-schools who are already glued to screens and sitting at desks preparing for kindergarten, with their Swedish counterparts who play outside half the day. In my kids’ schools, outdoor recess is cancelled for weeks on end during the cold winter months, and in the late Spring when it gets hot. In Scandinavian countries, nature is incorporated into their everyday life, and they even have a word, “frilufsliv,” which translates to “open-air living.” As I type this, I’m looking outside at my cul-desac, freshly covered by 2-inches of perfect snow. Where are all the children? We all know the answerinside, staring at screens. Scandinavian children play outside an average of 3 hours per day (as recommended by their doctors and government) because it is the societal norm. They recognize the Continued on page 28

most schools DO NOT ALLOW parent drop off! Smart rule, as I know parents with bus stops in front of their house who insist on driving their kids to school. These same Japanese children also clean their entire schools themselves, enforcing the importance of teaching children responsibility at an early age. So what can we do about this? Send our kids to Summer Camp!! Summer Camp is the safest, easiest way to cut the proverbial umbilical cord and give your child an experience will quickly foster independence and self-reliance. Children immediately embrace the ability to make choices themselves- choosing what to do, what to eat, and dealing with the trials and tribulations of peer relationships. After just a couple of weeks at camp, parents tell us how their children are brimming with self-confidence like they’ve never seen before. Sadly, today’s average American child spends less than 30 minutes per day outside, but at camps like Liberty Lake, kids

can be outdoors ALL DAY, and be happy as clams! In the heat - We swim! In the rain - We sing and dance in the “liquid sunshine” In the sun – We wear sunscreen, caps/hats And in the dirt - We revel in coming home filthy each afternoon! Camp is set up in ways that allow children to tackle reallife challenges in a safe, controlled setting, that teaches them skills to become the kind of successful adults that can make tough decisions and push themselves through challenging situations. This is important for college, where only 55% of today’s incoming 4-year college students are graduating within 6 years. Beyond college, employers are frustrated by their young millennial staff who lack the essential skills they need for their jobs like- Communication, Creativity, Collaboration and Critical Thinking (Partnership for 21st Century Learning.) These are all skills taught, learned and applied at Summer Camp, every day! Find an American Camp Association accredited camp for your child this summer, and give your child a chance to experience life the way we used to, and the ways that other cultures understand and embrace.

The Liberty Lake Foundation is something close to our hearts and youthdevelopment aspirations: our Liberty Lake families and their children. In the past few years, we’ve generated tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships—better known as “camperships”—for children whose families would otherwise not be able to afford the camp experience. Other beneficiaries of the Foundation are the many local youth-serving organizations we support with fund-raising events and programs each year. Our annual Community Day is a ton-of-fun event held the month before camp opens for the season. Community Day is one of our largest fund-raisers, with all proceeds going to the Liberty Lake Foundation. 1195 Florence-Columbus Rd, Columbus, NJ 08505 www.LibertyLakeDayCamp.com Find us on FaceBook: Liberty Lake Day Camp
