They are the creation of Belgian cartoonist Perro Culliford, who worked under the name of “Peyo”. The cheerful and rambunctious little folks first appeared in 1957, 55 years ago, as a weekly comic strip; (Continued on page 22)

Morphy’s To Launch Comic Book Division With Superhero Selection In February 9 - 11 Auction With the widely publicized $2.1 million auction price achieved recently by a rare copy of Action Comics No. 1, some investors are contemplating a shift of focus from gold and silver to paper. Vintage comic books - once considered a niche collectible for nostalgic boomers - have become a potent alternative to stocks and bonds. In recognizing this trend, Morphy Auctions in Denver, Pennsylvania, recently forged an alliance with the specialist company Sparkle City Comics, of North Bergen, New Jersey. Morphy’s, with the expert oversight of Sparkle City, will launch its new Comic Book division during a February 9 to 11, Toys & Advertising sale that features 200 prized comics from an original-owner collection. In the 1950s, Peyo worked on a series of Smurf cartoon shorts for the European film industry. These fueled even greater popularity for the Smurfs on the continent. Known and loved only in Europe for many years, the Smurfs became international when a British oil company began using them in their advertising campaigns. This caught the attention of an American novelty manufacturer, the Wallace Berrie Company, which

purchased American right for a line of two-inch rubber figurines and other goods. The figurines were first marketed in January 1979. Response from the buying public was so tremendous that shortages quickly developed for them and subsequent merchandise. All of this activity caught the eye of Fred Silverman, then president of NBC. Sensing a programming possibility, he turned the idea over to the gigantic TV animation firm of HannaBarbera. And thus is was that on September 12, 1981, the first Smurf cartoon premiered. Others followed and the Smurfs became a Saturday morning staple for years. The show’s immense popularity soon resulted in a $150 million Smurf industry in this

A couple of years later, this had grown to $650 million and involved nearly 100 American companies. The Smurf magic has touched just about everything imaginable: dolls, pins, pajamas, posters, cereal boxes, stationery, decals, wrapping paper, books, lunch boxes, records, puppets, banks, and Christmas stickers. Also, souvenir postcards - nearly a hundred different, puzzles of all kinds, including jigsaw, and gum cards. Among the postcards, there was an interesting series of decal novelties published by a Dutch firm in 1982. These had multilingual captions, including English. A sizable amount of these sold in this country for a few years. Each card contained 11 peelable stickers ( “washable,

In the late 1980s, a set of Smurf postcards, under license from American-based HannaBarbera, filled specialty store racks. Other sets of postcards derived from the television show and some of Hanna-Barbera’s famous characters, such as the Flintstones and the Jets, were also on sale. Smurf treasures fall into several areas of collecting, including television, film animation, comic strips and specific topics such as ephemera, play and action figures, books, children’s chinaware, etc. Regardless of how you sort and save them, they make for a “smurfect” collectible full of “smurf-fun.”
