President and Founder
We’re On A Mission PACT gives peace of mind to veterans and military personnel, as well as to children and adults in medical care, by providing free temporary foster care for their beloved pets until they can be reunited with the animals they love.
T
his year, our passion for the Human-Animal Bond has enabled PACT’s Emergency Military and Hospital Pet Foster Program to reach new milestones. PACT for Animals has now approved pet foster homes in more than 25 states, and has recently reached its 300th foster placement. This is a success that we share with all of our volunteers, supporters, foster homes, and donors who believe in our work. PACT’s staff and beneficiaries are incredibly grateful for the support that made these milestones possible.

Since our beginning, my colleagues and I have recognized the importance of family pets for years. But, our progress in 2015 has showed us that we are not alone. New corporate partnerships, new PACT staff members, and new friendships with new owners and fosters were all made possible by the shared desire to keep pets with their families. Though we come to PACT from different backgrounds and stories, the mission to protect the Human-Animal Bond has brought us together into one family.

About PACT PACT stands for People + Animals = Companions Together. Our mission is to provide programs that benefit companion animals and their owners. PACT is a network of passionate people who know the power of the humananimal bond and work hard to protect it. PACT is a constantly growing community of animal lovers that support each other and recognize the connection between a person and their pet goes beyond life’s temporary, unpredictable crises. We are constantly expanding this network as more people become aware of our work and join us in protecting the humananimal bond by fostering companion animals or providing other support to people and pets in need.
Military Pet Foster Program Supporting Our Military and Their Beloved Pets Across the country, every day, men and women of the armed forces are sent to trainings, deployments, and re-assignments in places where their pets cannot go. Even on short trips, without a capable friend or ability to afford expensive kenneling services, military pet owners are forced to unwillingly surrender their beloved pets to animal shelters or rescue groups and never see them again. Imagine going off to fight for our country knowing that your furry family member may be euthanized at a shelter because no one else could help. PACT exists for the men and women who put their lives on the line to protect this country every day. We are also proud to extend our services to veterans and their companion animals. Our Military Pet Foster Program provides the help and support that is crucial to both the animal’s well-being and the owner’s peace of mind.
Hospital Pet Foster Program What happens to your pet if you are unexpectedly hospitalized for a month or more? What if the emergency housing is not pet-friendly? Across the country, every day, pet-lovers and animal caregivers are hospitalized, but their animals still need daily food, water, and love. Without a close family member or trusted friend who can care for their pet until the owner recovers, hospitalized pet owners are often left with no options. PACT works directly with hospital patients, their families, and social workers, to match the companion animal with an appropriate foster home that will give them the care and love they need while their hospitalized owner recovers. PACT’s Hospital Foster Program provides the support that is crucial to both the animal’s well-being and the owner’s peace of mind.

military Stories Solstice Senior pit-mix Solstice was forced to stay in the United States when her owner, Major Weeks, was deployed to India. Breed restrictions prevented her from joining him and his family abroad. Not wanting to lose his decade-old friend, Major Weeks flew Solstice from Texas to a PACT foster home outside of Philadelphia. Solstice proved to be one of the calmest fosters PACT has ever known, allowing her to attend PACT events with her foster parents, the Smiths. In her year with PACT, Solstice joined the Smiths and the PACT staff on many endeavors, including the pickup of PACT’s first car. Major Weeks was happy to hear she was well loved during his deployment, and overwhelmed with joy at their heartwarming reunion in June 2015. The Smiths miss their delightful foster, but they are happy to see Solstice with her family once again.
Stevie and Mishka Carolyn refused to lose her cats, Stevie and Mishka, when she was asked to train with the National Guard for six months. PACT offered her cats a foster home, and she drove eight hours from North Carolina to place her cats with the McVoy family. The foster term began with the McVoys helping Stevie and Mishka, but the cats returned the favor when the McVoys had a painful loss. Stevie kept them entertained by wearing a Bat Cat costume while Mishka offered them endless snuggles. The cats’ love was greatly appreciated by the McVoys, and shared with Carolyn through photographs. By the end of the foster term, Stevie and Mishka eased the McVoys grief and Carolyn was elated to see her furry family again. The foster term came to a fairytale ending in September 2015. Stevie and Mishka, quite literally, flew happily ever after into the sunset when Carolyn and her boyfriend took their own plane home.

Military Stories continued Gabbana and Padme This English bulldog mother-daughter duo faced the possibility of surrender after Brittny, their owner, had to move back home during her husband’s deployment. Brittny, a wheelchair user, needs personal assistance on a daily basis and turned to her family for help while her husband was in Africa. Breed restrictions on flights, however, prohibited Gabbana and Padme to travel with Brittny, and she could not find anyone to care for them while she was away. Terrified of losing the dogs she had raised from puppyhood, Brittny called PACT for help. PACT gave Gabbana and Padme a safe, loving environment, allowing Brittny to get the personal care she needed from her family. Instead of having to choose between her health and her dogs, PACT watched Brittny’s furry family until they could be reunited in August 2015.
Roscoe and Clover Halfway through Steve’s deployment to Japan, the foster arrangements he made for his dogs, Roscoe and Clover, fell through. Having had Roscoe, an Aussie mix, for fourteen years and Clover, a boxer mix, for seventeen, the thought of losing them was unbearable to Steve. With six months left in Japan and no means of picking up his dogs, Steve called PACT. Roscoe and Clover were flown from Idaho to Pennsylvania to be placed with Mrs. Strickler, who was more than happy to watch them. These sweet and lovable dogs soon won over the hearts of everyone they met. Mrs. Strickler and the PACT staff who took them to their return flight in June 2015, were sad to say goodbye, but were happy to see these senior dogs spending the rest of their golden years in Steve’s care.

Hospital Fosters Yoshi and Juno PACT came to the rescue when lab mixes Yoshi and Juno, who were sent to us by Maddie’s Fund, needed our help. Their owner, Matthew, suffered from seizures and needed inpatient treatment. Matthew refused to be hospitalized because Yoshi and Juno would have no one to care for them. Upon learning about PACT’s Hospital Pet Foster Program, Matthew agreed to inpatient treatment for his seizures, knowing both dogs would be cared for and returned to him after release from the hospital. Placing Yoshi and Juno with a PACT family gave Matthew the peace of mind needed for him to seek treatment. While Matthew was hospitalized, PACT was able to cover veterinary bills for Yoshi and Juno, allowing him to focus on recuperation. This focus allowed Matthew to obtain a house boat, making it possible to reclaim both dogs in November 2015. Today, Matthew is incredibly active, repairing the house boat he has purchased and volunteering at the doggie day care that watches Yoshi and Juno through each repair.
Princess In July 2015, PACT and the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House (PRMH) celebrated when threeyear-old Iliyana Bishop’s brain cancer went into remission. PRMH and PACT supported Iliyana during her fight with cancer by fostering her dog, a malti-poo named Princess, during four difficult months of inpatient treatment at St. Christopher’s Children’s Hospital. After her initial hospitalization, however, Iliyana still needed treatment once a month for 3-5 days. PRMH and PACT continued making arrangements for Princess’s foster care until Iliyana’s full recovery. PACT also gave Iliyana a wonderful surprise birthday party to celebrate her strength and courage! 6

PACT Pet Owner Finds Happily Ever After
M
ay 2015 opened for PACT with one of our foster families officiating the wedding of a PACT beneficiary. After fostering a Rottweiler named Bandit and a Pit Bull named Ruger in 2013, the Keefers became steadfast friends with their owner, Michael. Upon hearing that Michael was engaged, the Keefers offered to officiate the wedding on their farm in Southern New Jersey. At the suggestion of his wife, Cindy, Michael forewent a wedding registry and instead asked guests to make donations to PACT. The wedding raised nearly $3000, and strengthened the bonds of a PACT-based family. PACT was honored to be the charity of choice for Michael and Cindy’s wedding, and to have paved the way for such a strong, beautiful friendship.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE PACT Receives Puppy Love from Broadway On December 8th, 2015, Broadway production Sylvia hosted a Meet-and-Greet in partnership with PACT to develop awareness of temporary pet foster care. Sylvia also generously sold tickets to PACT fosters, supporters, and pet owners for face value, and donated close to $1,000 to PACT. All who attended Sylvia howled with laughter at the show, and received a comedic reminder of why our pets mean so much to their owners. It was a great celebration in honor of the human-animal bond.
Country Musician Brings PACT Song and Dance PACT was honored to be the sole beneficiary of charitable donations from John Scargall’s debut album Breakthrough. John and his family continued generating outreach and funds for PACT through a parody music video, “Watch Me (Sit/Stay Stay)”, and an amazing Halloween Bash on the VFW base in Norwood, PA. These efforts raised over $1,200 for PACT, along with many laughs from foster families and pet owners.
PACT goes to the Movies, Thanks to Mayer & Associates: Pet Dish In October 2015, Mayer & Associates: Pet Dish gave PACT free tickets to an early screening of The Peanuts Movie in Philadelphia. PACT shared this event with the Chavez family, whose dog was in PACT’s care as their son, Eli, received cancer treatment at CHOP. Moviegoers received candy, hats, and posters, and The Peanuts Movie’s 3D effects amazed Eli. The Chavez family and PACT had an amazing time, and Mayer & Associates: Pet Dish was happy to have made a difference during Eli’s treatment.
Jones Natural Chews Naturally Supports PACT After learning about PACT’s mission at BlogPaws in May 2015, Jones Natural Chews offered us a corporate partnership. In addition to publicly sharing our mission online, Jones Natural Chews chose PACT to be one of their Monthly Charities, offering PACT vital resources and sharing PACT’s mission with their customers. Jones Natural Chews is doing more than just supporting PACT. They are helping families and our military pet owners in crisis know that there are options beyond shelter surrender when faced with a temporary crisis.
