Getting down to business Everyone sleeps differently; some people are very warm sleepers while others feel the cold easily. Here are 5 factors that may affect your warmth and comfort in a sleeping bag. Gender, in general, women sleep about 4 to 6 degrees colder than men.

Ground mat, it must provide sufficient insulation or ‘R’ value to prevent your body heat from being drawn into the cold ground.

Tent or shelter, a good winter shelter will provide adequate ventilation and minimise draughts.

Clothing and sleeping bag liner, a layer of thermals, beanie and socks will help keep you warm through the night, as will a sleeping bag liner.

Your metabolism and daily calorie intake, these two factors effect how much heat your body outputs, as this heat is released it is stored by your sleeping bags insulation.

In order to compare like for like the temperature ratings referred to here will be based on the EN13537 standard. The comfort rating is described as the temperature in which a standard woman can expect to sleep comfortably in a relaxed position. The lower limit rating is defined as the temperature at which a standard man can sleep for eight hours in a curled position without waking.

How these ratings relate to you will depend on whether you consider yourself a warm or cold sleeper, for example, if you consider yourself a warm sleeper you can use the lower limit rating to decide the coldest temperature the sleeping bag is suitable for.

Women’s comfort rating

Women’s specific sleeping bags will be identified by the comfort rating only, that is the temperature in which a standard woman can expect to sleep comfortably in a relaxed position. To stay warm we advise you choose a rating lower than the lowest temperature you expect to encounter and always choose a snug fitting sleeping bag.

Sourcing commitment Loft ratings explained Loft is the volume for a given weight of down. It is used to describe the quality of down, relating directly to the insulating performance. High loft down is warmer for a given weight than low loft down. As a result, less down weight is required to fill each baffle in a sleeping bag. This translates to a lighter sleeping bag. The most common measure of loft is in inches cubed. 850 Loft implies that one ounce of this down will loft to fill a volume of 850 in3.

EN temperature standard Temperature ratings are based on a manikin wearing one long-underwear layer and a hat, and sleeping on a single 2.5 cm thick, self-infl ating foam pad. The EN13537 temperature tests use sensors to measure the insulation value of a sleeping bag. The test is conducted in a temperature controlled chamber and a range of comfort temperatures are derived from measuring the energy required to maintain homeostasis in the manikin to a set temperature.

Both Nemo and Sea to Summit adhere to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certification. This certification requires an independent, third party assessment of all aspects of animal rearing and handling throughout the entire supply chain process. The down used by Mont is sourced exclusively from the food industry and is never the product of live plucking. Western Mountaineering takes a hands on approach; they have developed direct contact with the mother goose farm in Eastern Europe from which they source molted plumage from the nests of mature breeding geese. They regularly do spot visits at both the farm and the processor to ensure responsible practices are adhered to.

Western Mountaineering are constantly on the search for the lightest weight downproof fabrics to feature in their special use ExtremeLite™ bags. They have worked with suppliers to develop extremely high thread count fabrics with ultralight yarns. These fabrics are constructed from yarns that are 12 denier or finer with up to 420 threads per square inch. The ExtremeLite™ series sleeping bags are designed for special applications where compressed volume and weight are critical factors. Although some durability is sacrificed with these lighter fabrics, ExtremeLite™ bags are perfect for the lightweight specialist. Extra care should be taken to avoid tearing or abrasion damage to products made with these specialised lightweight fabrics.

Everything in the HighLite’s design is intended to reduce weight and promote compressibility. First, the 26 grams ExtremeLite™ shell fabric goes without saying. Not many shell fabrics are this light or packed with so many threads per inch. This specialised ExtremeLite™ bag uses a one way #4 1/2 YKK coil zipper that is cut to half length. While the horizontal seams are sewn-thru, the vertical seams are baffled with 3.81cm netting to allow unimpeded loft so the effect of its 850+ Loft goose down is fully realised. Its efficient cut not only reduces bulk and weight, but reduces excess internal volume so quick heating is realised! What is Microfiber?

A microfiber fabric is very water resistant because of its combination of high thread count and makeup of dense yarns. Each microfiber yarn has many more filaments than a normal nylon or polyester yarn of equivalent size. Woven into a high thread count material, it becomes a fabric that really keeps wind and water at bay. Since there is no coating or laminate on the material, it is highly breathable. The fabric construction is responsible for its weather resistantance, it’s not something that can wear off, wash out or delaminate. This is the most technologically advanced nonlaminated weather resistant fabric available. This microfiber bag is a great choice if you expect some contact with moisture.
