01 URBAN FOOD INITIATIVE

FOOD AS A SUPPORTING DEVICE KANSAS CITY, MO PROJECT Northeast Kansas City contains a variety of communities with diverse backgrounds and needs. After assessing the needs of the Independence Plaza, Lykins, East Team North, Bluevalley, and Sheffield communities it is evident that there is social disorganization between neighborhood members and neighboring communities. This disconnect is formed as more and more vacant lots spread throughout neighborhoods and create isolated blocks segregated from the rest of the community. The Urban Food Initiate will combat these issues though the following goals:

SPREAD THE LOVE MARKET VISION

GOALS • Provide community space to educate residents about the Blue and Missouri River system • Design space for ethnic residents to grow foods for their native cuisines • Provide live work options for those in need • Activate vacant land with pop-up installations • Decrease transit time to local markets/ restaurants, and jobs LYKINS OUTDOOR KITCHEN & DINING 4

EAST VILLAGE KANSAS CITY, MO ULI HINES COMPETITION TEAM WORK Collaboration with Abbey Hebbert, Tyler Remmers, James Ryan, and Mitchel Yarnall PROJECT Bridge is a catalytic development strategy establishing a robust east-west axis reconnecting communities in Downtown KCMO to Paseo West. Bridge responds to the needs of the community in East Village by integrating mixed-income housing, transitoriented development, and economically vital solutions. Both metaphorical and literal in its intentions, Bridge addresses the existing gap in the downtown urban fabric.

EAST VILLAGE DISTRICT AERIAL: LOOKING INTO THE DOWNTOWN CORE

GOAL Individually people and program create a whole greater than the sum of its parts. The iconic bridge and underpass improvements symbolize this idea while creating a new identity for East Village.
