WELCOME Wine lovers, art lovers, friends, and supporters—welcome to Bacchanal 2017!

11.11.17 NINETEENTH ANNUAL WINE GALA & AUCTION

ONIGHT, WE CELEBRATE CALIFORNIA VISIONARIES, honoring five extraordinary winemakers who brought their unique visions to life through hard work and talent and made an indelible mark on the world of California wines. We are also here to celebrate artists—from the children attending Family Arts Academy workshops every Sunday with their parents to make art and explore PAFA’s galleries, to the MFA students on the cusp of their artistic careers. Throughout its 212 year history, PAFA has sought to nurture artists and help them achieve their dreams and bring their vision to the world. Whether it is your first time attending Bacchanal, or your nineteenth, you are part of PAFA’s community of artists, collectors, patrons, and enthusiasts. Tonight, you are helping to shape the future of American art.

T

At PAFA, we believe the moment you pick up a paintbrush or pencil, the moment you face down a blank canvas or a blank page with the intent to create, you are an artist. However, art, like winemaking, takes more than passion. It takes years of dedication to make a vision into a reality. It takes sacrifice on the part of the artist. That first spark of inspiration, the desire to make something beautiful, to use art to speak truth to the world, is something PAFA seeks to nurture in audiences of all ages. The money raised through tonight’s event helps support scholarships for our students, but it also helps support the wide range of community and educational outreach programs PAFA offers for pre-K-12 students, families, and teachers. Tonight’s Special Pledge challenges each one of us as members of PAFA’s community to continue supporting the arts and bringing new visions to life. Every dollar raised will go toward providing financial aid for PAFA’s students, purchasing art supplies for Philadelphia classrooms without art programs of their own, sending PAFA’s art educators into underserved communities, and bringing children and teens to PAFA to gain new skills and experience art in new ways. Together, PAFA’s School and Museum are training the next generation of American artists, nurturing a lifelong love of the arts, and building an artistic community that not only enriches the cultural life of Philadelphia, but extends across the country, and around the world. Bacchanal is about more than just this evening’s celebration. It is a community effort that takes the hard work, time, and talent of many individuals. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our event co-chairs, Gregg Cotler, Esq. and William McGowan, MD, for their leadership, our Jefferson Award honorees for their generosity, and our Bacchanal Committee for their tireless work in making sure every detail of tonight’s event is flawless.

Thank you for joining us for this special evening. Please join me in raising a glass to the future of American art. Cheers!

TONIGHT’S SPECIAL PLEDGE Inspiring the Future of American Art

EVERY DAY, PAFA WELCOMES THE NEXT GENERATION OF GREAT AMERICAN ARTISTS INTO ITS CLASSROOMS, STUDIOS, AND GALLERIES. TONIGHT, WE INVITE YOU TO HELP NURTURE THE TALENT OF THESE PROMISING ARTISTS AND HELP THEM MAKE THEIR CREATIVE VISION A REALITY. This year’s special pledge supports PAFA’s community and educational outreach programs for pre-K-12 students, teachers, and families, focusing in particular on two programs—the School and Community Partnership Program, and the Teen LEAD Program. PAFA’s School and Community Partnership Program (SCP) works with four public schools in underserved mostly-Latino areas of Philadelphia: Isaac A. Sheppard Elementary, Julia de Burgos School, Feltonville School of Arts and Sciences, and Feltonville Intermediate. Each school receives in-classroom lessons tailored to each grade level and classroom curriculum; fieldtrips to PAFA for interactive gallery tours, including free bus transportation; art supplies for use in the classroom; professional development workshops for teachers; art therapy workshops for parents; an artist-in-residence who works with the entire student body to create a permanent art installation at the school; and a year-end family arts festival celebrating the work created by the community throughout the year. SCP currently serves over 2,700 pre-K12 students annually. The Teen LEAD Program provides in-depth engagement experiences for teens that increase in intensity as they grow toward adulthood. The Student Docent Program trains middle and high school students to be museum guides at PAFA for their peers. Students lead inquiry-based tours, encouraging their classmates to offer diverse opinions and value multiple interpretations throughout their museum visits. Student Docents gain important leadership skills and their peers see the museum as a place that values their personal experiences and opinions. The Youth Council, the next level of engagement for many Student Docents, is a paraprofessional experience for older teens. A small group of teens meets weekly after school, working with staff across multiple departments to organize exhibitions, manage a budget, and implement programs, all important workforce readiness skills. The Youth Council also receives special behind-the-scenes access to PAFA, including the opportunity to meet with artists and view their studios, visits with collectors, and tours of PAFA’s Conservation Lab and Archives.

LEAD SPONSOR

CALIFORNIA VISIONARIES

CHANIN WINES GAVIN CHANIN | OWNER/WINEMAKER Chanin Wine Co. is dedicated to crafting wines from Santa Barbara County that reflect the individual vineyard in which they are grown. Each wine is made from grapes grown at a single vineyard and never blended. Chanin makes their wine from some of the oldest vines in the county, allowing them to produce refreshingly balanced wines at lower alcohol levels than most California “blockbuster” or “cult” styled wines. Chanin’s winemaking philosophy is rooted in representing each individual vineyard by emphasizing balance, finesse, and complexity. They avoid excessive alcohol and modern winemaking additives that can overshadow vineyard characteristics, allowing the terroir of each wine to stand out. Chanin does not filter their wines or use intrusive wine processing machines. Their goal is to grow grapes that are so healthy none of the above is needed, and all of their vineyards are organic or sustainably farmed. Gavin Chanin was named one of FORBES’ “30 under 30” in Food and Wine and a “Winemaker to Watch” by San Francisco Chronicle. He began his winemaking career as a harvest intern at Au Bon Climat and Qupé, under the tutelage of winemakers Jim Clendenen and Bob Lindquist, working his way up to assistant winemaker at both labels. Taking fall quarter off each year from his studies at UCLA to work harvest in California, Chanin also worked harvest in South Africa and New Zealand. He then the traveled extensively in Burgundy and Italy before returning to launch Chanin Wine Co. in 2007. chaninwine.com | 805.345.6544 | info@chaninwine.com

DOMAINE DE LA CÔTE RAJAT PARR | PARTNER/PROPRIETOR

DUMOL THOMAS PILLSBURY | DIRECTOR OF SALES & PARTNER

Domaine de la Côte is a collection of 6 vineyards planted over 40 acres on the furthest western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills. Originally part of the Evening Land Vineyards program, the Domaine was purchased by Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman in 2013. Along with their partner, Chris King, Parr and Moorman developed the vineyards, planting them entirely with California heritage selections. Although the Domaine spans a mere 40 acres, the diversity of its climats is staggering: each vineyard has a unique geology, aspect, elevation and microclimate.

DuMOL was founded by three friends in 1996 as a hobby, and in 1999, Andy Smith was recruited as winemaker. Today, some eighteen vintages later, DuMOL is part of who Andy Smith is, and it is engrained in the DNA of the tight family that works to build the winery’s legacy vintage by vintage. DuMOL’s passion is working in the vineyards and expressing their unique characteristics in elegant wines of balance and detail. They are vigilant in their pursuit and are proud of their many long term loyal customers who enjoy their product and whom they get to meet each year at the winery and at events throughout the country.

Born in Calcutta, Rajat Parr credits his uncle in London for first introducing him to great wines. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel Administration, Parr entered the Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, New York. He began his wine career as an apprentice to one of the industry’s most acclaimed master sommeliers, Larry Stone at Rubicon in San Francisco. In 2011, Parr launched Sandhi, a partnership with Charles Banks and Sashi Moorman, to produce Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from select vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills. Parr is one of the James Beard awardwinning authors of the book “Secrets of the Sommeliers: How to Think and Drink Like the World’s Top Wine Professionals.” His profound knowledge of wines, enduring relationships with producers and renowned tasting abilities have made him a legend in the industry. At 42 years old, Parr is an ardent wine educator who has led seminars and panel discussions at several of the United States’ most prestigious food and wine gatherings.

A Berkeley native, Thomas Pillsbury earned his B.S. from the University of Utah and began work at the St. Francis Hotel and Victoria Station restaurants after graduation. He launched his wine career with Young’s Market Company, starting as a wine specialist, subsequently proceeding to division manager, Northern California Wine Manager, and State Wine Manager. Eventually, Pillsbury became the VP Director of Marketing for the Young’s Estates Group division. He was named Director of Sales for DuMOL in 2011 and is a Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW). He is married with three children and one dog. When not working, Thomas enjoys skiing very fast, bike riding much slower, fly fishing and golf. dumol.com | 707.948.7144 | winery@dumol.com

KUTCH WINES JAMIE KUTCH | OWNER/WINEMAKER

WILDE FARM WINES LOREN GROSSMAN | OWNER

Kutch Wines strives to create the highest quality, most balanced wines possible, using well-positioned cold climate sites and appropriate soils. Their fruit is harvested and handled with the utmost care, sorted meticulously and moved only by gravity. Kutch holds to a minimalist philosophy, trying to provide the purest expression of Pinot Noir possible, and not over-manipulating their wines. This minimalist style of wine-making is reflected in their use of indigenous yeast, minimal acid adjustments, and the absence of adding any color enhancing agents. All punch-downs are done by the bare hand or by feet, and wine is gravity flowed into French oak barrels, which remain unmoved while aging sur lie (on the fine lees). Wines are never racked until they are ready to bottle, nearly 16 months after harvest.

Wilde Farm began life as a horse farm with a generous kitchen garden of vegetables and herbs, built in 1907 on the estate of Samuel Wilde, a successful coffee and spice trader. Much like its eponymous wine, the house was expertly crafted of honest materials and made to age gracefully. About twenty years ago, Loren Grossman and his wife took over custody of Wilde Farm, making wines from old vines and exceptional vineyards in small quantities. Their wines are bright, balanced and made by hand, and emphasize a balance of acid and fruit.

Jamie Kutch is a Fordham graduate who gave up a career as a NASDAQ trader with Merrill Lynch to move to California and make Pinot Noir. Following the advice of Andrew Vingiello (A.P. Vin) and Brian Loring (Loring Wine Company), and with the mentorship of Michael Browne of Kosta Browne Winery, he quit his job, talked his girlfriend into moving west with him, and in a short time was in San Francisco. Kutch released his inaugural wines from the 2005 vintage: a Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley and a Rosé from the Sonoma Coast. The initial response to his wines was very favorable, and he quickly became one of the new young hounds in the Pinot race. His wines have been well-received by the wine press including James Laube of the Wine Spectator.

Loren Grossman grew up in the Marche region of Italy, recognizing early on that wine is better when paired with food and best when shared with friends. In starting Wilde Farm in 2011, Grossman hoped to recapture the energy, balance and food friendliness of those Marchigiano wines in the vineyards of northern, coastal Sonoma county. Partnering with winemaker Pax Mahle, sites were selected for their cool climates, unique soils and sense of place. Together, Loren and Pax strive for a more honest approach to winemaking, with a focus on sustainability and health in the vineyard, and honest, low intervention techniques in the winery. Grapes receive a light foot tread when they enter the winery and are fermented whole cluster with native yeasts, before they are gently pressed to neutral French oak barrique, with minimal if any sulfur used during élevage. wildefarmwines.com | 917.520.7060 | info@wildefarmwines.com

PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF THE FINE ARTS MISSION

PENNSYLVANIA ACADEMY OF THE FINE ARTS BOARD OF TRUSTEES

PAFA promotes the transformative power of art and art making.

VISION PAFA will inspire the future of American art by creating, challenging, cultivating, and celebrating excellence in the fine arts.

HISTORY Founded in 1805 by artist and scientist Charles Willson Peale and other civic-minded artists and business leaders, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts is the first museum and school of fine arts in the nation. Peale’s intention was to create a school and accompanying gallery focused on casts of antique sculptures as well as contemporary and European art where American artists could receive training and study current work. Nearly every major American artist has taught, studied, or exhibited at PAFA. The institution’s world-class collection of American art continues to grow and provides what only a few other art institutions in the world offer: a rare combination of a world-class museum and an extraordinary faculty known for its commitment to students and for the stature and quality of its artistic work. More than 200 years later, PAFA continues to carry on its traditions of studying the figure through rigorous training grounded in the teachings of Thomas Eakins and the great European art academies. In 2005, it received recognition for its educational endeavors through the National Medal of Arts, bestowed upon the Academy by the President of the United States.

THE COLLECTION PAFA’s collection has been described by scholars and collectors as one of the three finest American art collections in the world. The collection continues to grow and includes major works by many distinguished American artists as well as Academy faculty and alumni, both current and historic. The permanent collection ranges from colonial masters such as Robert Feke, John Singleton Copley, and Benjamin West, to major contemporary artists including Alice Neel, Helen Frankenthaler, Leon Golub, Betye Saar, H.C. Westermann, Jim Nutt, Adolf Gottlieb, Richard Diebenkorn, Red Grooms, and Faith Ringgold. PAFA was the recipient of the Harold A. and Ann R. Sorgenti Collection of Contemporary African-American Art (2005) and the Art by Women Collection, Gift of Linda Lee Alter (2011). Many of the nation’s most important artists were founders, teachers, or students at PAFA, including Charles Willson Peale, William Rush, Thomas Sully, Thomas Eakins, Thomas Anshutz, Mary Cassatt, Cecilia Beaux, William Merritt Chase, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Charles Grafly, Maxfield Parrish, Robert Henri, John Sloan, William Glackens, Everett Shinn, George Luks, Violet Oakley, Arthur B. Carles, Daniel Garber, and Robert Gwathmey _ all of whom are represented in PAFA’s collection.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS PAFA is a recognized leader in organizing exhibitions of historical and contemporary American art that are innovative, engaging and scholarly. Recent major exhibitions include Chuck Close Photographs, World War I and American Art; Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis; Traction Company; Peter Blume: Nature and Metamorphosis; The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionists and the Garden Movement, 1887-1920; and David Lynch: The Unified Field.

Wine comes in all manner of containers, from clay crocks to collapsible plastic bags. Fine wines, however, come mostly in bottles, which vary widely in shape, size, and color. Most bottles are made of glass: white wines generally come in clear glass and red wines in dark green glass, although there is no absolute rule. Shapes vary as well and range from the straight-sided, high-shouldered bottle used for Bordeaux wines, Italian Chiantis, or Valpolicellos and for most Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlots, to the slope-shouldered bottles used for Burgundy, Beaujolais, and Rhone wines, Italian Barolos, and most Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. There are also longer, more slender bottles used for German Alsatian wines and for some U.S. bottlings of Chenin Blanc, Riesling, or Gewürztraminer. And there are many other variables—again, there is no rule.

BOTTLE SIZE VARIES AS WELL. The following guide to bottle sizes and barrel or case quantities may be helpful in determining on how much wine you are bidding. Half-Bottle

375 milliliters (ml); one-half of the standard bottle size. Sometimes referred to as a “tenth.”

Bottle

750 milliliters (ml). This standard size is equivalent to 4/5ths of a quart, sometimes referred to as a “fifth,” as in a fifth of a gallon. Champagne bottles are slightly larger because they have thicker glass, but they also contain 750 ml.

Magnum

Equivalent to two bottles, or 1.5 liters (L) of wine.

Double Magnum

Three liters of wine, the equivalent of two magnums or four regular 750 ml bottles.

Jeroboam

When referring to sparkling wine, a jeroboam normally holds three liters or four regular bottles. When referring to still wine, a jeroboam equals five liters, or 6.67 bottles.

Rehoboam

Not often seen, this oversized bottle holds approximately 4.5 liters of wine, about six 750 ml bottles.

Imperial or Methuselah

Both bottles hold six liters of wine, the equivalent of eight regular bottles. They are shaped differently, and the Methuselah is normally used for sparkling wine.

Salmanazar

Holds about nine liters of wine, the equivalent of 12 750 ml bottles.

Balthazar

Holds 12 liters of wine, the equivalent of 16 750 ml bottles.

Nebuchadnezzar

The granddaddy of them all, this designation refers to a very large bottle that normally contains 15 liters (twenty 750 ml bottles) of wine, but can vary above or below that size.

Case

A case of 750 ml bottles normally contains 12 bottles; a case of magnums, normally six; and a case of half-bottles, normally 12 or 24 depending upon the winery.

2015 Borsao Tres Picos Garnacha I was surprised by the balsamic, minty, hinting-on-eucalyptus nose of the 2015 Tres Picos Garnacha to the point that I thought I was smelling the Syrah Zarihs. But no, this is a ripe and heady Garnacha aged in French oak barrels for five months. There are intense roasted aromas and a rich, meaty palate with herbal and smoky flavors, a bit heady, reminiscent of the nose. A very showy Tres Picos. (RP 91) 2014 Tenuta di Trinoro Le Cupole The gorgeous 2014 Le Cupole defies the difficulties of the vintage thanks to extreme fruit selection (executed over numerous individual harvests). Andrea Franchetti is a perfectionist when it comes to fruit selection. This Bordeaux-inspired Tuscan blend opens to dark concentration and a full bouquet that is redolent of dark fruit, spice and tobacco. The aromas are delivered in seamless fashion and with noteworthy intensity. Those are the qualities that ultimately distinguish this wine among the many choices you have from Tuscany today. One thing Tenuta di Trinoro always delivers is distinct personality. (RP 91) Donated by: Lydia Holiat and Pia Halloran

LOT 27 PRIVATE HIGH END TASTING AND LUNCH AT JOSEPH PHELPS VINEYARDS Up to six guests can enjoy this experience at Joseph Phelps Vineyards. The day will feature a selection of their current releases including a tasting of their flagship wine, Insignia. Donated by: Joseph Phelps Vineyards

LOT 28 THREE BOTTLES OF 2011 HENTLEY FARM SHIRAZ THE BEAST Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2011 The Beast Shiraz is intensely scented of black and red cherry preserves with suggestions of black pepper, sage and star anise. Medium-bodied, it shows a good core of mouth-filling red and black fruit flavors supported by medium level chewy tannins and refreshing acid before finishing with great length. Drink it now to 2019+. (RP 91) Donated by: Linda Aversa-Caldwell and Donald R. Caldwell

LOT 29 THREE BOTTLE VERTICAL: RIDGE MONTE BELLO, 2012, 2013, AND 2014 2012 Ridge Monte Bello Inky colored, the sensational 2012 Monte Bello comes all from the Santa Cruz Mountains and is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. It's backwards and tight, with classic black cherry, crushed violets, cassis, espresso roast and crème brulee notes all flowing seamlessly to a full-bodied, concentrated, structured and layered Bordeaux blend that has bright acidity, a stacked mid-palate and firm tannin. It needs 5-6 years of cellaring and will hold for two decades beyond that. (RP 94) 2013 Ridge Monte Bello Tasted out of bottle, the 2013 Monte Bello is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 7% Cabernet Franc and just 5% of Merlot (Merlot struggled in 2013 due to the drought).

• 27 •

Surprisingly, given the higher Cabernet content, it's more voluptuous and layered than the '12, and has awesome concentration and depth on the palate to go with classic creme de cassis, vanilla bean and violets. Reminding winemaker Eric Baugher of the 1985 (sorry, before my wine drinking time), I suspect this beautifully pure, elegant and seamless beauty will drink nicely in 3-4 years, and have upwards of three decades of overall longevity. (RP 95) 2014 Ridge Monte Bello The 2014 Monte Bello is bright, precise and finely sculpted throughout, with a slightly more reddish leaning flavor profile than is found in some of the surrounding vintages. In 2014, Monte Bello is built on bright, pulsating acidity and energy. (AG 96) Donated by: Linda Aversa-Caldwell and Donald R. Caldwell

LOT 30 SIGNED MAGNUM OF 2012 REGUSCI, STAG’S LEAP DISTRICT, NAPA VALLEY — CABERNET SAUVIGNON Meticulously crafted from both our oldest and most precious blocks, we are proud to introduce “The Elders,” our new signature Cabernet Sauvignon from our Stags Leap District ranch. By carefully emphasizing fruit from 30-year-old vineyards, we are able to distinguish this 100% Estate Cabernet Sauvignon with the rich complexity and sophistication that only “old men” vines can contribute. “The Elders” serves as a tribute to my ancestors who spent endless hours working our land and planting our oldest vines. We are honored to finally showcase these vineyards and share this wine with you for the first time. The 2012 Regusci Elders is layered with aromas of blueberry, cigar box, dry spice rub and bacon fat flavors. The wine has great fruit purity on the palate, superbly balanced by the savory notes. While this wine has a soft entry, it has a very broad mid-palate and a firm backbone; it is truly a wine with an iron fist in a velvet glove. This Cabernet Sauvignon will reward careful cellaring for eight to twelve years. (NR) Donated by: Linda Aversa-Caldwell and Donald R. Caldwell

LOT 31 SIX BOTTLES OF 2013 J. DANIEL CUVÉE, LAIL VINEYARDS, CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon J. Daniel Cuvée is probably the qualitative equivalent of the 2012, but slightly more backward and coiled tight. Coming from three vineyards that Robin Lail uses in Napa Valley: one in Calistoga, one in Oakville and the other on Howell Mountain. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 20 months in about three-fourths new French oak. Just under 1,000 cases are produced. The 2013 comes across like a Napa version of the famous Château Montrose in Bordeaux’s St.-Estephe. Earthy notes intermixed with chocolate, blackcurrant liqueur, grilled meats and spice are all present in this opaque purple wine. Graphite and floral notes are also present. It is full-bodied and ripe with beautiful purity and superbly integrated acidity, alcohol, wood and tannin. This wine needs another 4-5 years, as it’s less dramatic and flamboyant compared to the 2012. It should evolve and age beautifully for 30+ years. (RP 99) Donated by: Linda Aversa-Caldwell and Donald R. Caldwell

LOT 32 DOUBLE MAGNUM OF 2014 DUMOL RUSSIAN RIVER CHARDONNAY DuMol's 2014 Chardonnay (Russian River Valley) is a gorgeous appellation-level wine. Apricot, chamomile, white flowers, honey and orange peel flesh out in the glass. Creamy, open-knit and expressive, the 2014 is an absolute winner, especially at this level. Attractive saline notes underpin the finish. (AG 92) Donated by: DuMOL

LOT 33 2 MAGNUMS OF CHAMPAGNE: RUINART BRUT ROSÉ NV AND RUINART BRUT BLANC DE BLANCS NV Ruinart Brut Rosé NV There's lovely precision to the integration of this elegant rosé, offering a fine backbone of acidity and a light mousse. The flavors of poached pear, black cherry, fleur de sel, lemon zest and ginger are finely meshed, with a subtle vein of smoky minerality. Drink now through 2023. (WS 93) Ruinart Brut Blanc de Blancs NV Beautifully balanced and refined in texture, this displays exotic ground spice and floral accents to the flavors of poached white peach, Meyer lemon and candied ginger, with hints of pastry and honey. Offers a lasting, mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2023. (WS 93) Donated by: Ro and Martin King

LOT 34 TWELVE BOTTLE CASE OF 2013 PIO CESARE BAROLO ‘ORNATO’ Very beautiful aromas of berry, tar and rose follow through to a full-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a long finish of berry and vanilla. Very, very impressive. Polished and structured. Best after 2010. (WS 94) Donated by: Rebecca and Greg Segall

This is, again a wine with crisp, zesty acidity, striking liquid minerality, and a long, full-bodied finish. (RP 94) Vine Hill Vineyard From the vineyard in front of the winery, the 2007 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard is a muscular, powerful Chardonnay with notes of citrus oil, wood smoke, roasted nuts, and tropical fruits. Superb concentration, considerable power, and a thick, layered mouthfeel with zesty acidity acts as a wonderful buttress to this large-scaled Chardonnay. (RP 95) Donated by: Rebecca and Greg Segall

VINTAGE GLASS BORDEAUX DEMIJOHN Large demijohn wine bottle that was made in France, maker unknown. Excellent condition and would make a unique decorative touch to your décor. Donated by: Ms. Enikö Mara-Somkuti and Dr. Stephen G. Somkuti

2005: A crisp, elegant yet powerful, mineral-dominated effort, the 2005 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard is reticent at present, exhibiting scents of lemon oil, white currants, peaches, and orange rind. With striking intensity, great elegance, richness, precision, and delineation, this beautiful Chardonnay brought to mind a top-notch French Corton-Charlemagne. (RP 96) 2006: Light gold with a greenish hue, the 2006 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard exhibits aromas and flavors of lemon oil, peaches, nectarines, guava, and caramelized spices with a subtle wood component. Full-bodied with crisp acidity as well as a long finish, it should offer lovely drinking for 7-8 years. (RP 96) 2007: From the vineyard in front of the winery, the 2007 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard is a muscular, powerful Chardonnay with notes of citrus oil, wood smoke, roasted nuts, and tropical fruits. Superb concentration, considerable power, and a thick, layered mouthfeel with zesty acidity acts as a wonderful buttress to this large-scaled Chardonnay. (RP 95) 2008: The elegant 2008 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard exhibits abundant amounts of citrus and roasted nuts along with a layered mouthfeel, good acidity, medium to full body, and impressive purity. It, too, represents a hypothetical blend of top-notch white Burgundy and Sonoma Chardonnay. Best drunk during the first 5-7 years of life (RP 95) 2009: Displays wildflower, subtle peach and mineral flavors that are dialed back without sacrificing depth and persistence. One of the most understated and delicate of the Kistler's new releases. Drink now through 2019. (WS 91) 2010: The 2010 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard is another wine with superb aromatic presence. Silky and gracious on the palate, the 2010 stands out for its pure balance and harmony. Absolutely nothing is out of place. Sweet, beautifully articulated fruit, expressive aromas and a silky finish round out the impeccable Vine Hill Chardonnay. This is a wine of total finesse. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. (RP 95) Donated by: Rebecca and Greg Segall

LOT 38 THREE OF THE BEST BRUNELLOS 2010 Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Absolutely stunning aromas of nectarine, orange peel, sweet black cherry, plum, flower, licorice and mushroom. Full body with layers of ultra-fine tannins and hints of tangy acidity. Such beautiful length and beauty to this wine. It's powerful and structured but shows a gorgeous finesse and length. Truly wondrous. So long and refined. The texture is phenomenal. Better in 2016. (JS 99) 2010 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Alle Mura This is very tannic and powerful with blueberries, blackberries, and milk chocolate. Full body, firm tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Shows length and power. A wine for decades ahead. Greatest Banfi red ever. Better in 2018. (JS 99) 2010 Bellaria Brunello di Montalcino Assunto Riserva A Brunello with beautiful earth, berry, mushroom and leaf aromas and flavors. Full body plus a crazy center palate of fruit with chocolate-covered cherries and hints of oak. Fantastic depth and tannin structure. Superb in every sense of the word. This is off the charts. From 30-year-old vines that yield tiny grapes. 40 months in barrel. Give it two or three years in bottle. (JS 100) Donated by: Wendi and Charlie Chase

LOT 40 2011 SINE QUA NON SYRAH DARK BLOSSOM The 2011 Syrah Dark Blossom showed even better from bottle than barrel. A blend of 84% Syrah, 8% Grenache, 4% Petite Sirah and the rest Roussanne and Petite Manseng, this beauty was fermented with 17% whole clusters and aged in equal parts new and used French oak. One of the shining successes in the vintage, it’s a full-bodied, concentrated and layered Syrah that has awesome aromatics of blackcurrants, Peking duck, pepper, licorice and charcuterie in its seamless, thrillingly pure profile. As with Manfred’s other 2011s, the tannins are certainly present, yet they’re sweet, polished and have no hard edges. Give this beauty 2-3 years in the cellar and enjoy bottles through 2031. (RP 99) Donated by: Ms. Enikö Mara-Somkuti and Dr. Stephen G. Somkuti

LOT 41 ONE MAGNUM 2008 ARAUJO ESTATE SYRAH EISELE VINEYARD Again, the deep blue/purple-colored 2008 Syrah Eisele Vineyard appears to have more to it. The bouquet offers hints of roasted meats, flowers, crushed rocks and blueberries, and the evolved, approachable wine reveals sweet tannins. It is the product of a tiny crop that appears to have given it an extra measure of density. It should drink well for a decade or more. (RP 95) Donated by: Ms. Enikö Mara-Somkuti and Dr. Stephen G. Somkuti

LOT 42 2008 CHÂTEAU MARGAUX This is a stunning Château Margaux, made in a sexy, up-front, elegant style, with deep creme de cassis fruit intermixed with spring flowers, a solid inner core of richness and depth, but again, very sweet tannins as well as striking minerality and elegance. One of the most seductive Château Margauxs given its recent bottling, this blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and the rest tiny quantities of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot should drink beautifully for the next 2530 years. (RP 94) Donated by: Ms. Enikö Mara-Somkuti and Dr. Stephen G. Somkuti

LOT 43 SIGNED MAGNUM RAMEY WINE CELLARS HYDE VINEYARD CHARDONNAY, NAPA – CARNEROS 2013 A classy example of sleek, Burgundian Chardonnay, this is trim, with lively acidity and a zesty offering of tangerine, citrus, tart white peach and subtle oak. Charming now but built to age, this will likely be better by 2017. Sails along on the finish. Drink now through 2021. (WS 93) Donated by: David Ramey, Ramey Wine Cellars, 2004 Thomas Jefferson Award Honoree

Still very youthful and primary, give it another 2-3 years in bottle and drink it over the next 20+ years. (RP 95) Donated by: David Ramey, Ramey Wine Cellars, 2004 Thomas Jefferson Award Honoree

LOT 49 1995 MAGNUMS 1995 Château De Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Magnum Very youthful, with a ripe core of red currant and raspberry fruit and licorice flavor surrounded by creamy tannins. Plenty of smoke, mineral and tobacco notes chiming in, but this still has a ways to go, with plenty of grip still on the finish.995 Châteauneuf-du-Pape retrospective. Drink now through 2025. (WS 95)

is medium-bodied with supple tannin, impressive depth and backbone, the second half having mellowed in recent years, rendering this approachable; hints of secondary truffle and smoke notes emerging with aeration. It has been several years since I last tasted this wine, but it is one that seems to become more and more impressive with age. (RP 94) Donated by: Vesna and Howard Sacks

LOT 50 FOUR KISTLER CHARDONNAYS FROM THE GREAT 2009 VINTAGE McCrea Vineyard 2009 The straw/greenish-colored 2009 Chardonnay McCrea Vineyard offers a lovely perfume of white currants, unbuttered popcorn, citrus and a hint of wet stones, medium to full body, good acidity and length, and a fresh, lively style. (RP 95) Durell Vineyard 2009 A cuvee that always reveals a grand cru Chablis-like style is the Chardonnay Durell Vineyard. The mineral-laced 2009 exhibits notes of white peach, pear, wet rock and a subtle touch of spice as well as a full-bodied, rich, concentrated style. The acid levels give vibrancy and laser-like focus. (RP 96) Dutton Ranch 2009 The 2009 Chardonnay Dutton Ranch reveals noticeable acid levels along with notions of white peaches, nectarines, honeysuckle, brioche and crushed rock. Made in a full-bodied, impressive style with wonderful acidity buttressing the wine’s sizeable weight, it should drink well for 5-7 years. (RP 96) Hudson Vineyard 2009 The 2009 Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard may turn out to be one of the finest examples of this wine that Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler have ever produced. Its straw color with a greenish hue is followed by stunning aromas of white currants, quince, peaches, honeysuckle and marmalade. This full-bodied, concentrated white possesses terrific fruit layers, a subtle touch of oak, good acidity and a long finish. (RP 97) Donated by: Vesna and Howard Sacks

LOT 51 TWELVE BOTTLE CASE OF CALIFORNIA PINOT 2009 Rhys Vineyards Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard The 2009 Pinot Noir Alpine Vineyard (the estate’s highest vineyard) is fashioned from 15 separate Pinot Noir clones with 80% whole clusters used and aging in two-thirds new French oak. Its deep ruby color is followed by a sweet perfume of wet rocks, raspberries, currants, spice box and earth. Moderately tannic, medium to full-bodied and deep with impressive purity, texture and length, it, too, requires several years of bottle age and should last for a decade or more. (RP 94) 2010 Melville Pinot Noir Carrie’s The 2010 Pinot Noir Estate Carrie's is tremendous. Everything seems to come together in this effortless yet powerful wine. The Carrie's captures an intriguing combination of structure and bold, racy fruit. It boasts marvelous depth and integrity, with seemingly endless layers of fruit that fill out the wine's broad-shouldered frame. In 2010, the Carrie's is drop-dead gorgeous. Greg Brewer used 60% whole clusters here. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. (AG 94)

1995 Château Calon-Ségur Magnum The 1995 Calon-Ségur was the vintage that raised the profile of this estate and heralded the start of the late Mme Gasqueton's era. At 20 years of age, it shows no signs of reaching the end of its plateau. Far from it. It has an endearing bouquet that still seems youthful: brambly red fruit, asphalt and a light marine influence. Allowing the wine to open, there is a subtle winegum scent. The palate

2011 DuMOL Russian River Valley Very bright dark red. High-pitched aromas of pomegranate, cranberry, spices and crushed stone. Tactile and pungent in the mouth, with the tart red berry and mineral flavors showing very good depth and density but quite tightly wound today, even a bit musclebound. This wears its 14.3% alcohol gracefully as it finishes spicy, perfumed, energetic and long, with substantial but finegrained tannins. (ST 93)

2012 Radio-Coteau La Neblina A totally striking wine, the 2012 Pinot Noir La Neblina is laced with bright raspberry, cranberry, rose petals mint and cinnamon notes. The flavors are bright, focused and beautifully delineated throughout. Sweet floral and spice notes add lift on the finish. In this vintage, the Neblina was done with 15% whole clusters. This bright, aromatically expressive Pinot is a great choice for drinking over the next few years. There is a lot to like here. The Neblina is Radio-Coteau's largest production Pinot, should be relatively easy to find. The 2012 is a blend of several sites, including Hallberg and deselected barrels of the vineyard-designates. (AG 93) 2012 Melville Block One of the top Pinot Noirs in this report, Melville’s 2012 Pinot Noir Block M saw the same vinification and elevage as the Terraces, with 80% whole cluster and 18 months in neutral oak. It’s a fabulous wine that gives up notions of ripe currants, plum, underbrush, caramelized meats and spice in its rich, voluptuous and decadently styled palate. The texture here is something, and yet it stays classy and pure, with blockbuster length. It’s hard to resist now, yet should evolve gracefully going forward. (RP 97) 2012 Rivers-Marie Sonoma Coast Good full red. Perfumed aromas of strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate and rose petal. Juicy, supple flavors of red berries and spices, with tangy acidity giving the middle palate a sappy quality. Finishes with spicy, floral perfume. An excellent value in California pinot. (ST 90) 2012 Maybach Family Vineyards “Irmgard” Sonoma Coast In planting this vineyard in 2007, we chose two different California Heritage clones, Swan and Calera, to produce a distinct wine that reflects the soil and climate. This Pinot Noir has leagues of depth and aromatic notes of forest floor, cassis, and cinnamon. On the palate, notes of plum, cranberry compote, rosemary, oolong tea and a zesty acidity draw out into a clean perfumed finish. —Thomas Brown 2013 DuMOL Russian River Valley The 2013 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley) is a wonderful introduction to the vintage. Plump, juicy and forward, but with good underlying energy, the 2013 is impeccably balanced from start to finish. Dark red cherry, blueberry, spice, new leather and menthol are pushed forward in an impeccable appellation-level wine to drink now and over the next handful of years. (AG 91) 2014 Belle Glos Dairyman Bright crimson red in color. Aromas of black cherry and ripe plums combine with subtle notes of dried herbs and smoke. The palate entry shows flavors of cranberry, fresh raspberry, and ripe cherry, complemented by hints of vanilla and baking spice. A balance of savory, cedar and cocoa powder, and sweet, fig jam and ripe blackberry, round out the mouth-feel. The overall impression is one of ripe red and black berry fruit flavors, great structure, smooth tannins and a lingering fresh finish. 2014 Siduri Rosella’s Vineyard Made from five different parcels in the vineyard, all of which are planted to different clones, the 2014 Pinot Noir Rosella's Vineyard is a pretty, feminine and elegant wine that offers lots of passion fruit, sappy herbs, flowers and violet aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and silky on the palate, with sweet tannin, it has impressive mid-palate depth, notable tension and vibrancy (which is the hallmark of this site) and a great finish. Drink it through 2022. (RP 92) 2014 Anthill Farms Peters Vineyard The 2014 Pinot Noir Peters Vineyard is an attractive Pinot that veers towards the lighter end of the spectrum. Crushed flowers, dried cherries, mint and anise are all nicely lifted in the glass. This is a very pretty Pinot but readers should expect a lighter style. Because of its chemical composition, Peters often yields a naturally cloudy Pinot, but winemaker Anthony Filiberti prefers to leave the wine untouched, which results in a quirky Pinot. (AG 88)

2014 A.P. Vin Sonoma Coast Kanzler Vineyard A potent yet graceful and well-proportioned effort that combines power and finesse, with rich blackberry, anise, cedar, black licorice and mocha flavors that are deep and persistent. LOT 52 TWO SETS RIEDEL TASTING GLASSES Donated by: Ro and Martin King

LOT 53 SIX BOTTLE CASE 2015 LOST HIGHWAY PROJECT WITH BINDI PINOT NOIR– MACEDON RANGES AUSTRALIA WITH ARTIST PROOF POSTER A beautiful medium bright red color. Red and dark small berries; raspberries, red and dark cherries and plums. Dried spices. Creamy, gently oaky and bright. Combines freshness and power. On the palate it is fresh, full, very textured, powerful, flowing, very long and harmonious with a building, focused and driving finish. It seems to build and roll on. Ideally it will be cellared for five years and drunk until 15 years old. Let me say, this blend is one I would never have come up with however it looks fabulous and is a complex, powerful, long living wine! (Michael Dillon). Accompanying this sumptuous wine is an original illustrated label created by famed rock poster artist Justin Hampton, who has worked with numerous rock luminaries, including Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Motorhead, Pearl Jam, and Radiohead to name a few. Donated by: Vine Street Imports

LOT 54 TWELVE BOTTLE CASE 2011 RELIC RITUAL NAPA VALLEY RED Good deep red. Exuberant aromas of candied raspberry and musky licorice. Broad and classically dry but distinctly easygoing, with blueberry and spice flavors nicely supported by supple tannins. The persistent finish shows attractive sweetness. (47% mourvede, 22% carignan, 13% grenache, 11% syrah and 7% petite sirah) (ST 90) Donated by: Edward Schoenfeld

LOT 55 THREE BOTTLE VERTICAL CHÂTEAU PICHON LONGUEVILLE COMTESSE DE LALANDE 1999, 2000, 2001 1999: A delicate and refined red. Fresh aromas of raspberries and minerals follow through to a medium-bodied palate, with fine tannins and a delicate, refreshing finish. Best after 2003. (CT 91) 2000: The 2000 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is spectacular, and certainly a noteworthy rival to the 1996, 1995, and even the extraordinary 1982. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, this effort has a dense saturated purple color, a singular/distinctive yet possibly controversial aromatic smorgasbord existing of creme de cassis, vanilla, and violets, but also tapenade and tree bark. No doubt the Petit Verdot has imparted a certain almost olive-like component to the wine's aromatic profile. In the mouth, it is a wine of extraordinary density, opulence, great presence, and richness. As the 2000 sits in the glass, notes of lavender and melted licorice emerge along with the distinctive tapenade aromas interwoven with creme de cassis, espresso roast, and cedar. The wine is fullbodied, with extraordinary purity and a tremendous texture. I suspect this wine will be relatively approachable young but evolve effortlessly. This is a dramatic, almost flamboyant style that is not classic Pauillac in one sense, but a classic wine. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025. (RP 97)

• 35 •

2001: A distinctive bouquet of violets, soy, pepper, blackberries, cassis, and tree bark gives this 2001 a singular style. This dense ruby/purple-colored blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and a whopping 14% Petit Verdot exhibits plenty of structure, wonderful sweetness, a closed style, but a rich, textured, persistent character. The unusually large percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine more structure and less initial charm. This beauty needs some time in the cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2018. (RP 93) Donated by: Linda Aversa-Caldwell and Donald R. Caldwell

LOT 56 THREE VINTAGE VERTICAL OF LA CÔTE PINOT NOIR EN MAGNUM – 2013, 2014, AND 2015 VINTAGES At the western edge of the Santa Rita Hills is the most avant-garde Pinot Noir estate in the new world. Planted by Rajat Parr and Sashi Moorman in 2007, Domaine de la Côte (Estate of the Slope) has, in short order, produced Pinot Noir that has become a hallmark for California’s achievement with the grape. The la Côte vineyard sits mid-slope at the center of the domaine and offers the most elegant, complex, and cohesive expression of Pinot Noir. This three-vintage vertical showcases 3 exceptional, but markedly different growing seasons in California’s Sta. Rita Hills. Donated by: Domaine de la Côte, 2017 Thomas Jefferson Award Honoree

LOT 57 JEROBOAM OF KRUG GRANDE CUVÉE Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of more than 120 wines from ten or more different years. Its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first prestige cuvee re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage. Donated by: Krug Champagne

LOT 58 THREE BOTTLE LOT SILVER OAK CELLARS ALEXANDER VALLEY 1987, 1991, 1994 1987: The 1987 Napa Valley Cabernet offers more of a black fruit character in the nose and less of the herbaceous, spicy component found in the Alexander Valley. It is also a bit denser, more tannic, and slightly deeper and more ageworthy than the Alexander Valley. Irresistibly precocious, it can now be guzzled with great pleasure, but it could be cellared for at least a decade. (RP 90) 1991: This superb Cabernet producer has finally released its splendid 1991s. The compelling 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley exhibits more classic cassis notes without the subtle herbaceousness of the Alexander Valley wine. It is a multi-layered, fabulously rich, intense wine with full body, a velvety texture, and oodles of fruit, glycerin, and soft tannin in the finish. Both wines are already delicious, and will age gracefully for 12-15 years. (RP 95)

LOT 59 12 BOTTLE CASE HIGHLY RATED 2007 CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2007 Clos des Papes (2 bottles) One of the great vintages from this estate, surpassing even the 1990, 2000, 2001, 2003, and maybe the 2010 (time will tell with this one), the 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Vincent Avril delivers everything you could want from a wine. Full-bodied, intense and beautifully concentrated, with plenty of muscle and depth, it shows the hallmark elegance and purity of the estate, with sensational notes of kirsch liqueur, raspberries, incense, smoked meats and Asian spices. The blend is the normal 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest a mix of permitted varieties, brought up all in older foudre, and it's just now entering its prime drink window and has another two decades of longevity. (RP 100) 2007 Domaine Raymond Usseglio Cuvée la Parte des Anges (2 bottles) I suspect there will be mixed reactions to the limited production 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Parte des Anges. A blend of 70% Mourvedre, 20% Grenache, and 10% Syrah aged 100% in small barrels (only a subtle hint of oak is present), this classic, pure wine displays plenty of texture, but it is firm and in need of additional bottle age. Fresh and full-bodied, it offers hints of mushrooms, tree bark, blueberries, and charcoal. This impressive, modern-styled wine still seems classic in the scheme of Châteauneuf-du-Pape . Give it 2-3 years of bottle age and drink it over the following two decades. (RP 93) 2007 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe (2 bottles) The 2007 Vieux Telegraphe may be the greatest wine made at this property since the 2005 and 1998. Dense ruby/purple-tinged with an exquisite nose of salty sea breezes, licorice, ground pepper, jammy black cherries, black currants, figs, and plums, this is a full-bodied, rich, Provencalstyled offering with lots of sweet, ripe tannin. It is surprisingly accessible for a Vieux Telegraphe (this wine normally shuts down several years after bottling), but it should have great longevity (25+ years) given its power, full-bodied mouthfeel, and enormous length and richness. This is a brilliant effort from brothers Frederic and Daniel Brunier. (RP 96) 2007 Domaine Gerard Charvin (2 bottles) Never one of Laurent's favorite vintages (although I suspect he's warmed up to it slightly), the 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape continues to drink brilliantly, and while this bottle was just slightly closed, I’ve had numerous bottles from my cellar that are open and singing. Nevertheless, on this occasion, it took some swirling to get it to open up and it’s a concentrated, structured, full-bodied beauty that has the classic elegance of the estate yet with another level of fruit and exuberance. It’s just at the early stages of full maturity, is a smoking good drink and will keep for another 1015 years. (RP 96) 2007 Alain Jaume Domaine Grand Veneur (2 bottles) Very ripe and forward, with flashy fig, mocha and licorice notes pushed by sweet toast and spice. Round and juicy through the full-bodied finish, with the fruit hanging on nicely. Drink now through 2020. (WS 93)

1994: The 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (89% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc) reveals toasty sweet oak in the nose, bombastic levels of black currant fruit and spice along with a hint of mint in the background. Supple and full-bodied, with delirious levels of cedar and unctuouslytextured fruit, this fleshy, gorgeously made Cabernet Sauvignon should drink well for 14-15 years. (RP 93) Donated by: Jim Hamilton, Esq.

2007 Domaine de Ferrand (2 bottles) I've had numerous incredible bottles of the 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but there is some variability with this cuvee as well and some do have a spritz. That wasn't the case with this bottle, however, and it was just about as good as it gets. Full-bodied, multi-dimensional, layered, massively concentrated, yet graceful and elegant, with to-die-for notes of incense, garrigue, pepper and sweet red and black fruits, this quintessential Châteauneuf-du-Pape is almost impossible to find in the market today, but it's well worth the effort to track down! 2012 SINE QUA NON SYRAH STOCK A step up from the Grenache, the blockbuster-styled 2012 Syrah Stock checks in as a blend of 84% Syrah, 7% Grenache, 6% Petit Sirah, and the rest Viognier and Mourvedre, that was fermented with 32% whole clusters and aged in just over half new French oak. It offers stunning notes of blackcurrants, cassis, smoked meats, ground pepper and wild herbs to go with a full-bodied, unctuous, layered, yet always graceful and elegant feel on the palate. Nicely structured, with perfect overall balance, it still has the open-knit character of the vintage, yet has plenty of underlying structure, which at the moment is slightly hidden by the wine's lavish fruit. It will be better in 2-3 years, and have two decades of overall longevity. (RP 98) Donated by: Ms. Enikö Mara-Somkuti and Dr. Stephen G. Somkuti

LOT 68 3 BOTTLE LOT 2005 SINE QUA NON OVER AND OUT ARRITA HILLS VINEYARD Sadly, Sine Qua Non’s final Pinot Noir will be the 2005 “Over and Out” Arita Hills Vineyard. That’s a shame as their Pinot Noir has always been one of my favorites – always rich and full-flavored rather than a dumb-downed, wimpish, and diluted faux-French imitation. This beauty has put on considerable weight since I tasted it twelve months ago. Made from Dijon clones 115 and 777, it reveals a classic Cotes de Nuits-like perfume of damp forest floor intermixed with sweet cherries, plums, figs, and spring flowers. This could easily be mistaken for a Clos de la Roche from Morey St.-Denis, but with purer fruit and a more savory texture. Dominated by its beautiful fruit and complexity, with the oak component kept in the background, it should drink well for 8-10 years. (RP 94) Donated by: Alan Denis

LOT 69 FIVE BOTTLE LOT—HARD TO FIND MAILING LIST ONLY WINES 2004 Outpost Petite Sirah Howell Mountain Thomas Rivers Brown, recently acclaimed as the most sought after Napa Valley winemaker, has created a Petite Sirah that has an amazing nose of fresh, ripe raspberries. There is no getting around the wall of tannins on this wine as well. The wine has a long, tannic, jammy finish. (Tom Lee – 91)

2014 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast The 2014 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) is juicy, delicious and extroverted, with striking purity and energy in its fruit. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice and blueberry flesh out effortlessly. This is an especially forward, juicy Pinot that will drink well upon release. Most importantly, the Sonoma Coast is absolutely delicious. Even at its new price of $30 a bottle, the Sonoma Coast is a steal and in my view the single greatest value in California Pinot Noir. (AG 93) 2013 Rivers-Marie Chardonnay Sonoma Coast The 2013 Chardonnay is gorgeous. Honey, apricot pit, peach and butter notes are all quite expressive. This is a decidedly exuberant Chardonnay from Rivers-Marie with tons of persistence and a sublime, waxy finish that speaks to opulence. Readers won't have to wait too long for the 2013; it is striking, even today. The sources are mostly Martinelli Road and Thieriot. (AG 93) Donated by: Brian Lynch

FOUR BOTTLE 2008 & 2009 SCARECROW M. ETAIN CABERNET SAUVIGNON

THREE BOTTLES 2014 EL NIDO CLIO & 2004 CVNE VIÑA REAL GRAN RESERVA

2008: Scarecrow M. Etain Cabernet Sauvignon Unmistakably from the Cohn Ranch in Rutherford, Napa Valley, this lovely Cabernet shows all the trademark nuances for which this ranch is known. Intense dark cherry, black plum and raspberry tones slowly escape from the wine surface, carrying with them nuances of of sweet baking spices (clove, nutmeg), vanilla, warm star anise, cedar, and warm mocha notes. On the palate, the texture is immediately broad and full, with a soft, heavysatin sensation akin to melted dark chocolate. The finish echoes the fruit expression in the aromas, evoking dark fruits and a cocoa/mocha tone. (Celia Welch, winemaker)

2014 Clio The grapes for this wine are made from 12 Ha—29.65 acres—of Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards and 32 Ha—79 acres—of very old Monastrell, with a very low yield. The grapes are harvested with small baskets to prevent bruising. The bunches are brought to triage tables where the best ones are selected. It spends 24 months in French and American new oak barrels where it gets a very typical complexity. The wine exhibits a glass-coating opaque purple color with an expressive nose of pain grille, underbrush, brier, mineral, blueberry, and blackberry fruit leading to a plush, opulent wine with great density, savory flavors, and a lengthy finish.

2009: Scarecrow M. Etain Cabernet Sauvignon Amazingly complex, firm, dense and concentrated, with a vivid, lively, structured mix of dried currant, mineral, cedar, sage and tobacco notes. Fills out nicely on the finish and holds its focus, ending with a satisfyingly chewy, rich bundle of dark berry fruit. Best from 2013 through 2024. (WS 94) Donated by: Anonymous

LOT 71 2008 MAGNUMS — CHÂTEAU MONTROSE, CHÂTEAU COS D’ESTOURNAL, CHÂTEAU LA MISSION HAUT-BRION 2008 Château Montrose One of the superstars of the vintage, this classic Montrose is not as showy or opulent as the 2010, 2009 or 2003, but it offers a dense purple color followed by gorgeously sweet black raspberry and black currant fruit intermixed with loamy, earthy, forest floor notes, a floral component and a long, full-bodied finish. The 2008 was fashioned from yields of 44 hectoliters per hectare which is slightly less than the 2010's 45 hectoliters per hectare. Forget it for 5-8 years and drink it over the following 20+. (RP 95) 2008 Château Cos d’Estournel Good deep ruby-red. Complex aromas and flavors of currant, raspberry, smoke, musky dried herbs, sexy oak tones and minerals. Rich, broad and lush; big, rich and sweet but with an edge of acidity giving lift and grip to the middle palate. At once sexy and serious wine, finishing with broad, horizontal tannins and excellent length. (AG 92) 2008 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Like a lot of wines in this underrated vintage, the 2008 La Mission was one of the great bargains of recent vintages. Its healthy blue/purple color is followed by aromas of blueberries, black raspberries, licorice, truffles, underbrush and forest floor. The scorched earthy/smoky character of this estate’s terroir has not yet emerged. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated with good acidity, freshness and delineation, this is a big wine for the vintage, but also very classic in its balance of tannin, acidity and extract. It will benefit from another 5-7 years of cellaring and should keep for three decades. The final blend was 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc. (RP 95) Donated by: Anonymous

Predominantly Tempranillo with a bit of Graciano and Mazuelo, it reveals a nose of cedar, tobacco, cassis, and black cherry. Forward on the palate with a bit of ripe tannin supporting the fruit, it is likely to blossom for another 1-2 years and drink well through 2019. (RP 90). Donated by: Dr. Rick Cody

LOT 1 SPANISH SPLENDOR 12 BOTTLE CASE OF THE BEST FROM SPAIN Opening bid $1,000 2001 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva 890 2001 is a great vintage for all the wines from La Rioja Alta but the long-awaited 2001 Gran Reserva 890 is otherworldly. 2001 was a slow maturing vintage which produced smaller grapes especially in the old vineyards on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria in the villages of Brinas, Labastida and Villalba where the vineyards that make it into this wine are located. The final blend contains a majority of Tempranillo with 3% Graciano and 2% Mazuelo. The wine ferments with the natural yeasts attached to the grapes in stainless steel vats and is aged for six years in used American oak barrels with 12 manual rackings. A selection of the best barrels were blended together and bottled unfiltered in March 2008. Only 15,000 bottles were produced. It shows (even) younger and more concentrated than the 2004 904, a darker shade of red and a somehow backward and reticent nose (relatively speaking) of forest floor, cold bonfire, antique shop, truffles, game, sandalwood, nutmeg and clove. The fruit is also a little darker and the palate more austere, but still showing vibrant and supple, with clean flavors and a great finish. This is my favorite modern time 890. Bravo! Drink 2016-2026. (RP 95) 2004 Pintia There is an air of confidence about the bouquet on the 2004 Pintia, with scents of dark cherry, Indian ink, wild strawberry and a touch of raspberry preserve, all with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of red berry fruit. The tannins are strong and quite robust, although it is counterbalanced by plenty of fresh red fruit mingling with dried herbs, white pepper and a touch of sage. There is a touch of astringency on the finish, but otherwise this powerful Pintia should age over several more years. (RP 94) 2004 Bodegas El Nido Clio Jumilla Ruby-red. Sharply focused raspberry, cassis and floral aromas are complicated by zesty minerals and a suave cocoa quality. Sweet red berry and cherry flavors are strikingly pure and deep, with fine-grained tannins adding shape and firmness. The mineral character repeats on the impressively long, juicy finish. (AG 93) 2004 Celler Cal Pla Mas d’en Compte Planots The 2004 Mas d’en Compte Planots is 50% Garnacha and 50% Carinena from 100+-year-old vines sourced from a single vineyard. The wine was aged for 16 months in new French oak. Inky purple, the wine has an extraordinary bouquet of damp earth, truffle, creme de cassis, and kirsch. Thick and opulent on the palate, this powerful effort is a pure pleasure machine. Already easyto-drink, the wine has a well-concealed structure and superb balance. (RP 97) 2005 Emilio Moro Malleolus de Sancho Martín The 2005 Malleolus de Sancho Martin is a dense purple/black color. It exhibits a brooding bouquet of lightly roasted herbs, minerals, espresso, balsamic, licorice, and blackberry. Powerful, tannic, and massive on the palate, it will require a minimum of 12-15 years of further cellaring. It has all the right stuff; all that’s needed is patience (and youth). (RP 96)

bodied, dense, and already beginning to show complexity within its layers of spicy black fruits. There is immense power, well-concealed ripe tannin, and the well-delineated finish lasts for over one minute. This is a sensational effort which in a perfect world should be cellared for a decade and enjoyed over the following 25+ years. However, the elderly among us should not feel guilty about opening a bottle now. (RP 98) 2003 Mauro Terreus Pago de Cueva Baja The 2003 Terreus is sourced from a single vineyard and produced only in top vintages. Purple/black in color, it offers a superb perfume of smoky oak, pencil lead, mineral, spice box, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent, thick, and layered, it has gobs of spicy, ripe black fruits, and licorice and espresso notes which emerge on the palate. The wine is beautifully balanced and very lengthy. It will reward extended cellaring and drink well through 2030. (RP 96) 2003 Numanthia Termanthia The bouquet on the Termanthia 2003 is gentle, approachable and perhaps a little “flat,” especially when compared to the previous vintage. In some ways, it is reminiscent of some Right Bank Bordeaux of that same year. The palate is rich and full-bodied with eucalyptus-tinged red berry fruit, sage, cloves and white pepper. It exhibits better freshness and balance than the aromatics suggest and is probably superior to a lot of Right Banks in this vintage. Though the 2002 demonstrates more vitality, the 2003 appears to be maturing well, even if the palate is leaving the aromatics behind. Drink now-2018. The following year was marked by a gradual increase in summer temperatures with veraison during the second week of August and finishing on the last week. There was a strong accumulation of sugar with large diurnal variations in temperature that fell to around 10 degrees at night. (RP 90) 2004 Finca Villacreces Nebro The Nebro bottling is produced only in exceptional years of which 2004 more than qualifies. The 2004 Nebro is 100% Tinto Fino and is sourced from the estate’s oldest Tempranillo located just 3 meters from Vega Sicilia. The wine is barrel fermented and remains in French oak for at least 18 months. Purple/black, the wine has an extraordinary perfume of espresso roast, graphite, smoke, scorched earth, a hint of iodine, floral notes, wild blueberries and blackberry. On the palate, the wine is packed, with layer upon layer of spicy black fruits and that certain slightly baked character that gives an extra dimension to the top 1959 Bordeaux. With impeccable balance, superb length, and well concealed tannins, this great effort should evolve for a decade and drink well through 2050. (RP 98) 2004 Clos Mogador Clos Mogador is produced by the esteemed Rene Barbier who has hit home runs in both 2003 and 2004. The 2004 Clos Mogador has a more saturated purple color than the 2003 as well as a more expressive perfume of mocha, coffee, and flowers (violets) in addition to toasty oak, earth, and blue and black fruits. More extracted and backward than the 2003, it demands a decade of cellaring and should drink well for an additional 20 years. The 2004 is a tour de force. (RP 96) 2004 Mas Doix Costers de Vinyes Velles The 2004 Costers de Vinyes Vielles is 50% Carinena, 48% Garnacha, and 2% Merlot aged for 16 months in new French oak. Deep purple, the aromas are other-worldly with truffle, tar, graphite, kirsch, and wild blueberry among the array of scents leaping from the glass. Flamboyant and opulent, the wine has remarkable richness and depth of flavor leading to a 60-second finish. (RP 98)

2004 Numanthia Any aspiring collectors should add a case of this to their stash. The 2004 Numanthia comes from a different terroir with a different clone of Tinta de Toro. The vines for this cuvee range from 70100 years of age with tiny yields of 1 ton of fruit per acre. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel followed by 19 months in new French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. The wine is a glass-coating opaque purple with a killer nose of mineral, pencil lead, wild blueberry, and blackberry liqueur that roars from the glass. On the palate the wine is full-

2003 Rotllan Torra Tirant The 2003 Tirant is a similar blend as the Amadis. Fermented in foudre and aged in French oak for 12 months, it is a more refined version of the Amadis with more complexity and elegance, but nevertheless still a beast of a wine. The purple/black color is followed by aromas of melting tar, blueberries, blackberries, and a touch of vanillin. The wine is dense and rich with layers of flavor, the tannin well hidden by the fruit. Give this bad boy another 4-6 years of cellaring and drink it for 15 years thereafter. (RP 96) Donated by: Kristin and Jamie Biddle

LOT 2 GREAT VISIONARY WINES FROM THE REST OF THE WORLD Opening bid $1,200 Nikolahof Wachau 2012 Riesling Steiner Hund Reserve Prominent lemony brightness and underlying alkalinity do not convey an immediate impression of such a ripe, sunny vintage as this was. Aromatically alluring sea breeze, fennel pollen, and green and black tea persist in the mouth, where this wine also grabs hold of the palate and salivary glands in an outpouring of lemon-drenched oyster liquor. The combination of polish and clarity on display is similarly striking, though by no means unusual in an installment of what is in effect the Nikolaihof’s iconic offering. The long, vibrant finish displays kaleidoscopic flavor interactions no less memorable or mesmerizing for their being nuanced and understated; nor is there any let-up in the onrush of marine salinity. The Saahs family bottled this wine in April 2015 and released it just as stocks of its 2010 counterpart were running low, leaving the 2011 behind in cask for now. (AG 95) NV Jacques Selosse Brut Blanc de Blancs Initiale The NV Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Initiale is absolutely impeccable. It’s hard to know where to start. What is more impressive: the definition of aromas and flavors, or is it the wine’s sublime texture? The Initial is remarkable for its nuance, clarity and overall sense of harmony. The mousse is impeccably fine from start to finish, while the expression of Chardonnay is all elegance. Juicy apricots, peaches, flowers, crushed rocks and spices meld together on the seamless, utterly impeccable finish. Initial is Selosse’s largest production cuvee and is a blend of fruit from Avize, Cramant and Oger, all Grand Cru villages. Disgorged October 20, 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018. (RP 95) 2011 Yvon Métras Fleurie L'Ultime Deep ruby. Pungent, expansive aromas of dark berries, flowers and Indian spices are lifted by a bright minerally quality. Stains the palate with vibrant black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors accented by black cardamom and candied flowers. This wine's blend of liveliness and depth is awfully impressive. Shows a smoky nuance on the clinging, minerally finish. (AG 93) 2010 Le Dome A full-bodied wine, but ethereal in its elegance and finesse, the wine has a strikingly provocative bouquet of camphor, blueberry jam, violets, new saddle leather, white chocolate and spice. Extremely full-bodied, but again, not showing any weighty fatigue or any type of aggressiveness, this wine has extraordinary purity and richness as well as a blockbuster finish of close to a minute, yet is so flawless, seamless and compelling, it’s hard to believe the wine is this concentrated and rich. It will be interesting to see how it evolves, but it certainly can be drunk in 3-4 years and, I’m sure, cellared for as long as 25-35 years from now. (RP 100) 2009 Delas Frères Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes A wine that flirts with perfection is the inky and opaque 2009 Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes. Coming from L'Ermite, le Sabot, and Les Bessards, and aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels, it gives up a heavenly bouquet of crushed rocks, blackberries, leather, wild herbs and earth. Massively concentrated on the palate, with another level of fruit and texture over the 2010, it has brilliant purity, building tannin and a blockbuster finish. There's enough tannin here to warrant hiding in the cellar for 4-5 years, but it should last for 3-4 decades. (RP 98)

2008 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio The 2008 Barolo Cerequio comes across as dark, powerful and rich. Black cherries, leather, spices, licorice and tar are some of the nuances that take shape in this intense Cerequio. Here, too, the flavors are dark and brooding. With time in the glass, the Cerequio turns suave, polished and elegant, all qualities that are typical of this site, but the 2008 never fully drops its sheer muscle. The 2008 remains big, powerful and structured. A finessed finish covers every inch of the palate with small bursts of energetic dark red fruit. This is another drop-dead gorgeous wine from Roberto and Davide Voerzio. Little of the early appeal and sensuality that is typical of Cerequio is to be found in the 2008, so readers will have to be patient. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2028. (RP 97) 2005 Artadi Pagos Viejos The 2005 Pagos Viejos is already in bottle but has not been released. It is just slightly more muted but lovely nonetheless. Already complex both aromatically and on the palate, it has superb materials while appearing to be more structured than the 2004. Purchasers will need to be a bit more patient with this 2005 and should consider drinking the 2005 Vinas de Gain in the interim. Kudos to Bodegas Artadi for this tour de force! (RP 95) 2002 Domaine Raveneau Chablis Vaillons The 2002 Chablis Vaillons offers aromas reminiscent of liquefied stones, spices, and pears. Medium to full-bodied, it bursts on the palate with awesome layers of creamed almonds, salt, flint, and white fruit pulp. Its extraordinary texture, super-rich, plush, and sexy, is only surpassed on the wow-scale by its stupendous length ... this level of quality and Bernard Raveneau had not reached for the grand crus yet! Projected maturity: 2007-2015. (RP 93-95) 2001 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese ** Candied lemons, molasses, orange zests, and honeyed minerals make up the aromatic profile of the 2001 Riesling Auslese Erdener Treppchen**. A wine of untold depth, breadth, and power, it coats the palate with sweet red fruits, pears, and apples. Medium to full-bodied and oily-textured, this civilized behemoth is harmonious and graceful while being muscle-bound and authoritative. In addition, this stunning wine has one of the longest finishes I’ve ever witnessed. Projected maturity: 2014-2025+ (RP 97) 1996 Domaine Leroy Pommard Les Vignots The medium-to-dark ruby-colored Pommard Les Vignots possesses feminine and refined aromas of violets intertwined with sweet red cherries. This seductive, silky-textured, powerful, and opulent wine enthralls with its dried and fresh red fruit flavors as well as its long, luscious, supple tanninfilled finish. (RP 92) 1995 Tenuta San Guido Bolgheri Sassicaia The wine has a bright and intense ruby color and incredibly lively aromas that are balsamic and full with notes of berry jam and hints of underbrush. The mouthfeel is agile and elegant, still very young, with an excellent acidity and a subtle yet long aftertaste. (Daniele Cernilli – 94, 5/26/16) 1993 Château Pajzos Esszencia One of the world's finest dessert wines. Sensational, ultrasweet Tokay, yet with a lovely citrus underpinning that keeps it from being heavy. Like melted honey, with lime and pineapple, this is one of those marvelous gems that makes you swoon in delight. Tempting now into the 21st century. A collector's item to drink in small portions, by itself, to celebrate life. (WS99) Donated by: Vesna and Howard Sacks

“Bo Bartlett is an American realist with a modernist vision. His paintings are well within the tradition of American realism as defined by artists such as Thomas Eakins and Andrew Wyeth. Like these artists, Bartlett looks at America’s heart—its land and its people—and describes the beauty he finds in everyday life. His paintings celebrate the underlying epic nature of the commonplace and the personal significance of the extraordinary. Bartlett was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where realist principles must be grasped before modernist ventures are encouraged. He pushes the boundaries of the realist tradition with his multilayered imagery. Life, death, passage, memory, and confrontation coexist easily in his world. Family and friends are the cast of characters that appear in his dreamlike narrative works. Although the scenes are set around his childhood home in Georgia, his island summer home in Maine, his home in Pennsylvania or the surroundings of his studio and residence in Washington state, they represent a deeper, mythical concept of the archetypal, universal home."

LOT 10

2004 The exquisite 2004 Proprietary Red Wine offers up notes of lead pencil shavings, licorice, Asian plum sauce, black currants and a hint of underlying minerality. Full-bodied yet beautifully silky and seductive, it has shed most of its tannins, resulting in a complex, singular red wine of majestic proportions. The finish is among the longest of any 2004 I tasted, and gorgeous levels of fruit and extract hide any notions of new oak. This cuvee tastes like a hypothetical blend of a great Pauillac, Pessac-Leognan and Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It should drink well over the next two decades. (RP 99) 2005 A limited production of a very powerful and massive wine from two of California’s most famous winemaking gurus, Bob Levy and Martha McClellan, this wine remains primordial and backward, especially for a 2005. Loads of graphite notes interwoven with cassis, new saddle leather, blackberry and earth are impressive. It may sound unusual, but what came to mind is tasting some of the more recent vintages of Château Montrose in St.-Estèphe in Bordeaux. This wine still needs another 5-6 years of cellaring easily. This masculine, vigorous, bigger-than-life, full-throttle wine will evolve for another 25-30 years. (RP 95) Donated by: Anonymous

2008 Harlan Estate Proprietary Red Wine (3 Bottle Case) Espresso, mocha, dark red berries, rose petals and spices are some of the many notes that emerge from the 2008 Harlan Estate. The wine fleshes out beautifully in the glass as it shows off its class and true pedigree. This is a decidedly ripe, forward vintage, but in exchange the wine will drink well right out of the gate. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. (RP 96) 2008 Harlan Estate The Maiden (3 Bottle Case) The 2008 The Maiden is a beautiful wine graced with exquisite finesse in its dark red berries, flowers and licorice. LOT 13 19TH ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE LOT 90 POINTS AND ABOVE! Opening bid $1,200 2013 Aubert Chardonnay Sonoma Coast Richly aromatic, offering a riveting mix of peach and citrus blossom, with white peach, lemon, grapefruit, green apple and honeydew notes. Ends with a kiss of wet stone and toasty oak so subtle you have to pay attention to catch it. (WS94) 2009 Marcassin Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard The 2009 Pinot Noir Marcassin Vineyard is a gorgeous, clearly California version of a grand cru from Burgundy, such as Clos Saint-Denis or Clos de la Roche. This deep plum/garnet-colored wine offers intense berry fruit along with forest floor, spice box, earth and loads of plum, cherry and strawberry notes, moving toward darker fruits, as well as earthy, autumnal, foresty scents. The wine is full-bodied, with great intensity, sweet tannins and good acidity. Drink it over the next decade or more. (RP 98) 2011 Quinta do Noval, Vintage Port The 2011 Vintage Port is a blend of 60% Touriga Nacional, 30% Touriga Francesa and 10% Tinto Cão, all aged for 18 months in wood. It comes in at 101.2 grams per liter of residual sugar. It opens with understatement, but that doesn't last long. Showing pure power on the finish, this otherwise elegant Noval (especially refined in the mid-palate) shows itself to be in fine form as it airs out. Pointed, graceful and a bit drying, this is built for the long haul. It's a Port you need to cellar. It will one day gain complexity, open more fully and become more interesting. That day is not today, although if you air it out long enough, the fine fruit and flavor eventually come through. By the end of the week, this was actually possible to drink, although even then, as it sat in the glass, it became tighter and slightly astringent--showing off its power and intensity. Its firmness and underlying concentration are beautifully matched by the fruit, though. The balance is impeccable. If you have some old school patience, snap this up by the case. It may be accessible younger than I suggest, but this is a Port that should be put away for a couple of decades, or more, for best results. (RP 97) 2015 Borsao Tres Picos I was surprised by the balsamic, minty, hinting-on-eucalyptus nose of the 2015 Tres Picos Garnacha to the point that I thought I was smelling the Syrah Zarihs. (RP 91) 2014 Lemelson Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Thea’s Selection Polished, expressive and deftly balanced, this is generous with its baby powder—accented cherry, lingonberry and floral flavors. Remains open and inviting through the long finish. Drink now through 2022. (WS 92)

2010 CVNE Gran Reserva We're in for a treat with the 2010 Imperial Gran Reserva, a classic among classics in a classic vintage. It's very spicy and still slightly oaky, with ripe fruit without any excess; it is a serious, somehow Bordeaux-like, less-perfumed red. The palate shows that seriousness, with some dusty tannins and a dry finish. The texture is a little earthy, very good for food. This could be drunk now, but I'd give it some time in the bottle. The oak feels very nicely integrated, less noticeable than in warmer vintages like 2009. A very good vintage for this bottling. The category that was close to disappearing ten years ago seems to be alive and kicking with 50,000 bottles produced in 2010. (RP 94) 2012 Marchesi di Barolo Cannubi The Marchesi di Barolo 2012 Barolo Cannubi shows some restraint at the beginning and feels slightly shut down overall. This Cannubi Barolo takes longer to open, and this does not come as a surprise, given the delicate floral and berry flavors that can be achieved in this vineyard site when optimal conditions are met. Following a few swift swirls of the glass and a little encouragement, you get licorice, balsam herb and toasted spice. (RP 90) 2010 Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino Rich, with a smooth texture and lively structure supporting the mulled cherry, licorice, leather and tobacco flavors. This firms up — a good sign in a young red, with a lingering finish of tobacco and spice. Best from 2018 through 2029. (WS 94) 2013 DuMOL Eddie’s Patch Syrah The 2013 Eddie’s Patch Syrah comes from volcanic red soils and shows tightly knit blueberry and blackberry fruit with some camphor, charcoal and barbecue notes. It is highly extracted, intense, full-bodied and rich. It reminds me of a California version of a serious Crozes-Hermitage. Give it several years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15 or so years. (RP 93) 2014 Domino de Pingus Flor de Pingus Bright violet color. Explosively perfumed aromas of fresh boysenberry, floral oils and incense, with suave vanilla and woodsmoke nuances building in the glass. Sweet and plush on the palate, offering intense, smooth dark fruit liqueur and spicecake flavors. Really stains the palate, finishing with superb thrust and clarity; velvety tannins add gentle grip. (AG 95) 2007 Marqués de Murrieta Castillio Ygay A worthy follow-up of the 2007, the 2007 Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Éspecial will be released in late 2015. This is a cuvée of mostly Tempranillo with the balance of Mazuelo (Cariñena), a very important grape for Castillo de Ygay in percentages that vary depending on the vintage, and it's almost 15% in 2007. 2007 was not an easy vintage and in Ygay they had a terrible mildew attack and they lost 50% of the bunches. It's a cold, rainy year, but because of that circumstance the wine is concentrated. This is still a baby, long and with depth and tannins that should melt in a couple of years. Compared with the 2005 it is fresher, perhaps not as concentrated, but for me the extra freshness compensates and puts it at a very similar quality level. And the rule of thumb is to wait at least ten years after the harvest to start uncorking any Castillo de Ygay. Cheap it is not, but very good value it is, for the quality it delivers. (RP 95) 2005 Clos des Papes Chateauneuf-du-Pape Hitting a natural 15.5% alcohol, Paul-Vincent’s 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is decidedly more elegant and finesse-styled now than it was on release, where it was more dominated by its tannic structure. Still a youthful ruby color, it offers up a perfumed bouquet of kirsch and blackberrylike fruits, licorice, incense, Asian spice and forest floor. This is followed by a medium to fullbodied, seamless, elegant wine that’s lost all of its baby fat, yet still has a core of sweet fruit, fine tannin and a balanced, harmonious feel. It’s not a powerhouse, and is drinking nicely today, with another decade of longevity. (RP 94)

1995 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande What sumptuous pleasures await those who purchase either the 1996 or 1995 Pichon-Lalande. It is hard to choose a favorite, although the 1995 is a smoother, more immediately sexy and accessible wine. It is an exquisite example of Pichon-Lalande with the Merlot component giving the wine a coffee/chocolatey/cherry component to go along with the Cabernet Sauvignon's and Cabernet Franc's complex blackberry/cassis fruit. The wine possesses an opaque black/ruby/purple color, and sexy, flamboyant aromatics of pain grille, black fruits, and cedar. Exquisite on the palate, this full-bodied, layered, multidimensional wine should prove to be one of the vintage's most extraordinary success stories. Anticipated maturity: 2001-2020. (RP 96) 1996 Château Ducru Beaucaillou The 1996 Ducru Beaucaillou was picked from 23 September until 8 October, a blend of 25% Merlot and 75% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has evolved a very pure bouquet, almost Burgundy-like, with macerated red cherries and red plum, tobacco, leather and bay leaf. This 1996 seems a little more forward than others, perhaps more 1995 in style, but it is bestowed one of the most seductive and sensual aromatics of the vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, moving firmly into secondary stage with hints of leather, game and allspice. This is a Ducru Beaucaillou that has resolved to give pleasure at 20 years and not sooner. Hints of Hoisin develop on the finish with Chinese Five-Spice and leave you wanting more. Enjoy this now and over the next 15-20 years. (RP 93) 2013 CIRQ Pinot Noir Treehouse Veineyard The larger production cuvee (1,748 cases) is the 2013 Pinot Noir Treehouse Vineyard, which comes from a higher elevation site that's above the fog line, roughly eight miles from the Pacific Ocean. Its deep ruby color is followed by to-die-for notes of black raspberries, crushed violets, cassis, spice and toasted bread. Utterly perfect on the palate, with medium to full-bodied richness, an ethereal, seamless, multi-dimensional texture, fine tannin and crazy length, hats off to the team at CIRQ for this singular beauty. Give bottles a few years (if you can resist) and enjoy over the following decade or more. (RP 97) 2004 Glaetzer Amon-Ra Shiraz Deep garnet-black in color, the 2004 Amon-Ra exudes lovely dark fruit, spice box and anise notes over kirsch, creme de cassis and mincemeat, plus a savory and meaty whiff. Full-bodied, it is generous and rich in the mouth with bright acid and a medium-firm level of fine-grained tannins. It finishes long and fine. Drink it now until 2022+. (RP 99) 2007 Williams Selyem Bucher Vineyard Pinot Noir Bright red. Ripe cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by cola and rooty sassafras. Powerful, deeply concentrated berry and cherry compote flavors coat the palate, with dusty tannins providing firmness. A sexy note of candied flowers gains volume with air and carries through the strikingly long, sappy finish. This benefited a lot from air and should be given a few more years of rest. These vines were planted in 1970, according to Cabral. (AG 93)
