Bacchanal: 21st Annual Wine Gala and Auction

21ST ANNUAL WINE GALA & AUCTION

WELCOME

Welcome to the 21st Annual Bacchanal! Over the years, Bacchanal has celebrated wines from the old world and the new, families who have harvested grapes from the same land over generations and passed down knowledge through the family tree, alongside newcomers to the scene. Just as it brings together food, wine, and friends, Bacchanal is also a bridge linking tradition and innovation, gathering wine lovers and art lovers to look toward the future by supporting the next generation of great American artists. Bacchanal has been successfully accomplishing this mission for over 20 years now, raising more than $9 million for student scholarships since its founding. Winemaking and art are both professions that require a deep understanding of the past, and a will to take that knowledge and create something new. Tonight, we honor Mazzei Wines, artist, PAFA alumna, and former faculty member Elizabeth Osborne (’58), and longtime PAFA supporters Henry B. Du P. Smith and June Marshall Smith, all of whom embody this blend of tradition and innovation. The Mazzei family has produced wine for over six hundred years, each new generation continuing to build the legacy. Elizabeth Osborne’s passion for art is evident in her own work and the way she has inspired others, beginning at PAFA as a student, and returning as a beloved faculty member. Hank and June Smith have been dedicated supporters of PAFA for many years, during which time Hank served on PAFA’s Board of Trustees for 20 years, and June served as President of the Women’s Board, both acting as leaders and mentors. PAFA’s mission is to educate artists from around the world to be innovative makers and critical thinkers with a deep understanding of traditions and the ability to challenge conventions. Tonight, I ask you to join PAFA in this mission by supporting its student artists. The money raised through Bacchanal ticket and table sales, sponsorship, and your live and silent auction purchases tonight goes toward student scholarships. Thanks to your generosity, PAFA can continue nurturing artists, helping them find their voices, and encouraging them to push themselves creatively and achieve their dreams. As we raise our glasses in celebration, share a meal, and connect with friends new and old, I encourage you to honor the tradition of Bacchanal at PAFA and consider making an additional gift during the paddle raise for student scholarships to ensure that we can continue providing students with a world class education and experiences they will not find at any other school. Now, a toast: I would like thank our event co-chairs, Emily Cavanagh and Jonathan Hirsch for their leadership, our Jefferson Award honorees for their vision, and our Bacchanal Committee for bringing us all together for this wonderful celebration. I would also like to thank all of you for joining us for this special evening. Cheers!

DAVID R. BRIGHAM President and CEO

P E N N S Y LVA N I A A C A D E M Y OF THE FINE ARTS MISSION As the first art museum and school in the United States, PAFA celebrates the transformative power of art and art making. PAFA inspires the public by expanding the stories of American art through its collections, exhibitions, and programs; and educates artists from around the world to be innovative makers and critical thinkers with a deep understanding of traditions and the ability to challenge conventions. Through its world-class museum and school, PAFA nurtures and recognizes artists at every turn in their career.

HISTORY Founded in 1805 by artist and scientist Charles Willson Peale, William Rush, and other civic-minded artists and business leaders, PAFA is the first museum and school of fine arts in the nation.

THE MUSEUM PAFA’s museum is internationally known for its collections of 19th and 20th century American paintings, sculptures, and works on paper, as well as contemporary works. Its archives house important materials for the study of American art, museums, and art education. The permanent collection ranges from 18th and 19th century masters such as Benjamin West, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, Frederic Church and Mary Cassatt to modern and contemporary artists including Charles Demuth, Jacob Lawrence, Alice Neel, Vik Muniz, Mickalene Thomas, Rina Banerjee, and Kehinde Wiley.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS PAFA is a recognized leader in organizing exhibitions of historical and contemporary American artists. Recent exhibitions showcased work by David Lynch, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Norman Lewis, and KAWS, as well as works by women artists, as part of the Linda Lee Alter Collection of Art by Women gifted to PAFA in 2011.

THE SCHOOL

PAFA is a specialized and unique art school that attracts some of the most committed and promising art students from across the country and around the globe to study painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and illustration with a distinguished faculty of working artists. BFA The four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program pairs demanding studio training with a fine-arts focused liberal arts education. PAFA’s BFA enhances artistic expression with critical thinking skills.

PENN BFA The coordinated Bachelor of Fine Arts with the University of Pennsylvania pairs PAFA’s fine arts studio training with an Ivy League degree from one of the country’s most distinguished universities.

MFA The Master of Fine Arts degree program is for students who have completed their undergraduate degree and wish to pursue a full-time, two-year program devoted to the development of their work.

LOW-RESIDENCY MFA The Low-Residency Master of Fine Arts degree program provides students with the community and rigor of a traditional MFA with a more flexible structure to fit their lives and schedules.

POST-BACCAL AUREATE The Post-BaccalaureateCertificate program is ideal for artists working independently who wish to experiment and bring new focus to their work, as well as for artists seeking further development before pursuing an MFA.

TONIGHT'S SPECIAL PLEDGE

Challenging Artists, Creating the Future Those of you who have been attending Bacchanal regularly have heard us say over and over how your support impacts our students and changes their lives. Tonight, you will hear from our students directly in a special video highlighting five PAFA artists – four current students, and one recent graduate. In their own words, they will share their passion for art, and the ways PAFA pushes them to grow and challenges them to take their work to new heights. Tonight’s special pledge paddle raise supports financial aid and scholarships for students just like these five students who chose PAFA as a place they know will nurture them and help them achieve their artistic goals. These artists come to PAFA hungry to learn, and it is our aim to send them out into the world with a deep understanding of tradition which they can draw on to create the futures they desire. Each year, PAFA awards over $5 million in scholarship funds and financial aid. Every single student who enrolls at PAFA receives some form of financial assistance in order to help them complete their studies. PAFA awards its scholarships on a merit basis and students must maintain high artistic and academic standards in order to remain eligible for funding. During their time at PAFA, students receive a world-class fine arts education, surrounded by one of the best collections of American art in the world, and are part of a vibrant community of artists and art appreciators that includes fellow students, faculty members, alumni, staff, museum patrons, and art collectors. Students enrolling at PAFA have access to unique opportunities, including individual studio space for all third and fourth year students and all MFA students; the ability to gain teaching experience through PAFA’s After-School Studio Arts Program for High School Students; the Annual Student Exhibition, which shows and sells thousands of student works each year; and ongoing exhibition opportunities year-round. While PAFA is primarily known for providing a classical fine arts education, rooted in the traditions of drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, its curriculum and facilities are constantly growing and changing to meet student needs. PAFA’s new Digital and Time-Based Media Chair is in the process of designing and launching a new curriculum at PAFA, responding to student interest in digital art and animation. Meanwhile, PAFA’s new Health and Wellness Coordinator is working to provide students with critical resources outside of their basic academic and career-related needs.

B A C C H A N A L — 4

Every student comes to PAFA with a unique story, and each one follows a different path on their journey here. Whether they learn about PAFA through a former student, or discover it on their own, whether PAFA is their first choice, or whether they are transfer students, PAFA aspires to be a place where all artists can share their voice and vision with the world. Your gift tonight will help support these students who come to PAFA seeking an education, and find a community where they are welcomed, challenged, and inspired every day. Thank you for your support.

HONOREE

Mazzei Family Wines WINEMAKER

For more than six hundred years, the Mazzei family has produced unique wines with spirit and passion renewed from generation to generation. A long lasting bond unites the Mazzei family with Tuscany and wines since the XI century. Philip Mazzei, who enjoyed calling himself a “Citizen of the World”, befriended Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and Thomas Jefferson, who invited him to introduce vine growing in Monticello, Virginia. In 1980 for the 250th anniversary of his birth, Philip Mazzei was commemorated as an “American Patriot” with a stamp issued by the U.S. Postal Service. Today, as in the past, the Mazzei family leads the legacy of their know-how at the place where everything started, at Castello di Fonterutoli, one of the most important institutions of Chianti Classico and Tuscany.

Long recognized by critics and her peers as one of the most innovative and daring Philadelphia-based artists of the last 40 years, Elizabeth Osborne (born 1936) has tirelessly explored the psychologically-charged space between abstraction and realism. Liz studied art at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1954 to 1958. In 1959, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a B.F.A. In 1963, she was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship to complete her studies in Paris, France. During the same year, she began teaching painting techniques at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and was a faculty member up until 2011. Liz has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and received numerous awards, among them the Distinguished Alumni Award from PAFA in 2013, a prestigious Rosenthal Award from the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1968, and the Percy M. SILENT AUCTION

LOT 112 THE BEST OF OCCIDENTAL VINEYARDS PINOT NOIR 2011-12 2 bottles of Cuvée Catherine 2011 The 2011 Pinot Noir Occidental Station Cuvée Catherine is a real stunner. Still incredibly primary, the 2011 is built on a serious core of fruit. Voluptuous yet medium in body, the 2011 impresses for its balance and sheer purity. The 2011 has developed quite a bit since I last tasted it, but the style remains one of fruit density. Readers should give the 2011 another year or two in bottle. What a fabulous wine this is. (AG 97) 2 bottles of Cuvée Elizabeth 2012 Darker tonalities of red and purplished hued fruits emerge from the 2012 Pinot Noir Bodega Headlands Cuvée Elizabeth. Lavender, violets, cloves, new leather and spices blossom in the glass as this sensual, layered Pinot shows off its compelling personality. As is often the case, the Cuvée Elizabeth is all about texture and resonance. The 2012 is a model of total finesse. (AG 97) 2 bottles of SWK Vineyard 2012 As good as the Cuvée Catherine is, there is another Occidental Pinot that is also profound. The 2012 Pinot Noir SWK Vineyard also comes from his 65 acres planted in Occidental. This is a 1,000-case Cuvée from a site that sits above the Bodega Headlands Vineyard. With a dark ruby color like its siblings, it is made from 100% Calera and sees only about 30% new French oak. This wine offers a copious mouthful of red, blue and black fruits, medium to full body, terrific acidity, and intense black raspberry and black cherry fruit along with spring flowers, forest floor and spice box. This is a stunning, super-complex, compelling Pinot Noir to drink over the next decade or more. (RP 98) Donated by: Howard Sacks and Vesna Todorovic Sacks Value: $1,100

LOT 113 GREAT 2012 KISTLER CHARDONNAY 2 bottles of Kistler Vineyard The 2012 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard exhibits great richness, a fabulous bouquet of white flowers, quince, mango, honeyed peaches, caramelized citrus and delicate, spicy oakiness that is very restrained but present. Broad, full-bodied, multi-dimensional and intense, this is a stunner made from a combination of the Mount Eden and Old Wente clones of Chardonnay. Look for it to drink well for 5-8 years. (RP 95+) 2 bottles of Cuvée Cathleen The top cuvée, the 2012 Chardonnay Cuvée Cathleen, comes from the Kistler Vineyard and is essentially a selection of the best barrels. As you can imagine, it's similar to the Kistler Vineyard, with many of the same aromatic and flavor components, just slightly more intense and perhaps a trifle longer. Both of these Kistler Vineyard cuvées are spectacular Chardonnays to drink over the next 5-8 years. (RP 96)

B A C C H A N A L — 25

SILENT AUCTION 2 bottles of Stone Flat Vineyard Coming across like a Grand Cru from Chablis, the 2012 Chardonnay Stone Flat Vineyard displays loads of wet rocks, a touch of delicate honey, lemon blossom and assorted citrus oil notes. It is medium-bodied, fresh, lively and quite crisp and pure. (RP 95) Donated by: Howard Sacks and Vesna Todorovic Sacks Value: $1,000

LOT 114 3 BOTTLES OF BOND 2002 IN OWB 1 bottle of 2002 Bond Vecina The 2002 Vecina comes from a vineyard not far from the steep hillsides of Harlan Estate, on the western hills of the Mayacamas Mountains overlooking the Oakville corridor and the eastern hillsides. This is a much earthier, spicier, more structured wine, much more masculine, with notes of scorched earth and almost Graves-like smoky, camphor and barbecue notes as well as black fruits galore. With its big, muscular structure and dense opaque/purple color, this wine actually seems younger in its evolution than either the St. Eden or Melbury. It is probably best forgotten for another 5-6 years, with another 30-34 years lifeline potential. It’s a sensational wine. (RP 98+) 1 bottle of 2002 Bond St. Eden The 2002 St. Eden, which comes from a valley floor vineyard in the Oakville corridor, is unreal. I had given the 2001 a perfect score, but the 2002 (made by the brain trust of on-site winemaker Bob Levy and outside French consultant Michel Rolland) is showing incredible elements of cedarwood, licorice, chocolate and creme de cassis as well as exquisite texture, full-bodied intensity, and unbelievable purity and length. It is only the second vintage for this vineyard, leased by Bill Harlan for several decades, and it has turned out to be a killer Cabernet Sauvignon and a great classic of Napa. It should drink well for 20-25 years. (RP 100) 1 bottle of 2002 Bond Melbury The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Melbury, which comes from a hillside vineyard site near Lake Hennessey, is showing even better than it did in its youth. Probably years away from full maturity, the wine has an extraordinary aromatic profile of smoky meats intermixed with blackberry, creme de cassis, charcoal, lead pencil shavings and espresso. Dense, opulent and full-bodied, with terrific fruit, this is a showcase style of vintage for a wine of such great ripeness and massive intensity. This extraordinary effort displays oodles of glycerin and fabulous purity, while the oak has been completely absorbed. The cooler hillside climate of blue fruits and spring flowers is also present as the wine aerates in the glass. This wine has at least another 15-30 years of potential ahead of it. The 2015 Chardonnay Clare is a doppelganger for a great Meursault, featuring gloriously seductive pink grapefruit, lemon meringue pie and mandarin peel scents with hints of lime blossoms, fresh ginger, struck match and toasted almonds. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is super intense, with layer upon layer of electrically charged citrus and floral notes, framed by lively acid and a silken texture, finishing very long and very minerally. LOT 116 6 BOTTLES OF 2015 LAIL VINEYARDS J. DANIEL CUVÉE IN OCB The profound 2015 J. Daniel Cuvée Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the same sources and is again 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. However, 2015 is such a great vintage, with very low yields and incredibly ripe fruit, this wine exhibits high energy and acidity, ripe tannin framing up the enormous fruit, unctuous texture and inkiness of the Cabernet Sauvignon. This dense purple wine displays blackberry, cassis, violets, cedar wood, charcoal and subtle barbecue smoke. Superb, full-bodied, opulent and voluptuous, it is ideal for drinking over the next 25-30+ years. It is a tour de force. (RP 96 – 100) Donated by: Donald R. Caldwell and Linda Aversa-Caldwell Value: $1,700

Medium to full-bodied, the palate explodes with vivacious black fruit sparked by red fruit, herbal and mineral accents. It is framed with a rock-solid line of firm, grainy, super ripe tannins and finishes with fantastic fragrance and freshness. Wow! (RP 99) Donated by: Donald R. 1 bottle of Kutch Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2015 Kutch's 2015 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast is a very pretty wine that straddles the line between the more reductive style of the 2014 and lusher expression found in the 2016. Lemon peel, white flowers, chalk, mint and white pepper give the 2015 brightness, aromatic lift and tension. Insistent saline notes punctuate the driving finish. Most of the fruit is from Bohan, although about 10% of the grapes came from Trout Gulch, in the Santa Cruz Mountains. (AG 94)

SILENT AUCTION 1 bottle of Kutch Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast 2014 The 2014 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is dark, bold and pungent, with intense red and black fruit, savory herbs, mint, herbs and tobacco flavors that are front and center. This is an unusually dark, intense wine from Jamie Kutch. The 2014 will drink well young, but readers should expect a fairly rich appellation-level Pinot. About 50% of the blend is from Sonoma Stage, a clay-rich soil that contributes textural depth. Kutch de-stemmed 40% of the fruit here, which is unusual for his wines and gives the Sonoma Coast much of its up-front personality. This is a very serious appellation level Pinot. (AG 90) 1 bottle of Wilde Farm Pinot Noir Donnelly Creek Vineyard 2014 The 2014 Pinot Noir Donnelly Creek Vineyard is pretty, gracious and nicely lifted throughout. Sweet red cherry, sage, mint, orange peel and spice are all nicely delineated. The 2014 was done with 80% whole clusters, which gives it a slightly fleeting personality. My impression is that the 2014 could use a bit more depth, although there is good inner sweetness and pliancy. (AG 90) 1 bottle of Chanin Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard 2014 Chanin's 2014 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard is silky and beautifully layered throughout. Sweet red berry fruit and floral notes are pushed forward. Rose petal, blood orange and white pepper develop in the glass, adding brightness and tension to the acid-driven finish. The 35% whole clusters are pretty much buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. Deceptively medium in body, the Bien Nacido Pinot has a level of intensity that sneaks up on the understated finish. This classy Pinot will drink well for at least a handful of years. This sexy, full-throttle, opaque purple-colored 2012 boasts fabulous concentration along with copious notes of pen ink, blueberries, blackberries, and hints of graphite and espresso bean. Deep, full-bodied and multidimensional, this sensational Cabernet should drink well for 20-25 years. (RP 97+) 1 bottle of Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard 2014 The 2014 Syrah Rodger's Creek Vineyard is medium garnet-purple in color and reveals a very pretty perfume of kirsch, chocolate-covered cherries and mulberries with hints of potpourri, Provence herbs and fungi. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a beautiful velvety texture and wonderful freshness supporting the elegant perfumed layers, finishing on a compelling mineral note. (LB 93) 1 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon gives up notions of cassis, warm plums and cedar chest with touches of tobacco, dried herbs and underbrush. LOT 122 WEST COAST PINOT NOIRS 1 bottle of Beaux Freres Pinot Noir 2001 At the outset: Moderately saturated medium red. Nose dominated by smoky oak, coffee grounds and menthol. Offers good texture and richness but only modest verve and definition of flavor, despite the considerable CO2 Substantial oak tannins dry the tongue. After 24 hours: Much more complex aromas of sappy red cherry, strawberry, mocha and spices to go with the nutty oak. Rich, chewy and strong, with nicely concentrated red fruit flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and excellent persistence. (ST 89) 1 bottle of Kistler Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard 2012 The 2012 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard comes across as quite supple and voluptuous today, with tons of upfront juiciness. LOT 129 6 BOTTLES OF SPANISH REDS 1 bottle of Rotllan Torra Tirant 2003 The 2003 Tirant is a similar blend as the Amadis. Fermented in foudre and aged in French oak for 12 months, it is a more refined version of the Amadis with more complexity and elegance, but nevertheless still a beast of a wine. The purple/black color is followed by aromas of melting tar, blueberries, blackberries, and a touch of vanillin. The wine is dense and rich with layers of flavor, the tannin well hidden by the fruit. Give this bad boy another 4-6 years of cellaring and drink it for 15 years thereafter. (JM 96) 1 bottle of El Nido Clio 2004 The consulting winemaker at Bodegas El Nido is Chris Ringland of Barossa Valley fame. The 2004 Clio is 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 70% Monastrell (from 63-year-old vines) which received malolactic fermentation in new oak followed by 26 months of aging in new French and American barriques. A glass-coating opaque purple, it exhibits a sensational nose of earth, mushroom, leather, blueberry, and blackberry jam. On the palate, the wine is suppletextured, complex, with vibrant flavors of spicy blue and black fruits and a big-time WOW factor. This is a totally hedonistic effort with exceptional length and balance. It is remarkably light on its feet for such a powerful wine. (JM 97) 1 bottle of Mas Doix Costers de Vinyes Velles 2004 The 2004 Costers de Vinas Viejas is 50% Carinena, 48% Garnacha, and 2% Merlot aged for 16 months in new French oak. Deep purple, the aromas are other-worldly with truffle, tar, graphite, kirsch, and wild blueberry among the array of scents leaping from the glass. Flamboyant and opulent, the wine has remarkable richness and depth of flavor leading to a 60-second finish. Drink this hedonistic effort over the next 10-12 years. (JM 98) 1 bottle of Numanthia Termanthia 2004 The bouquet of the 2004 Termanthia is very intense but not overpowering, with notes of black currant, menthol, peppermint, kirsch and just a touch of eau-de-vie. The palate is fullbodied with dense, firm, quite robust tannins. It is very powerful with layers of spicy red berry fruit laced with cloves and Provencal herbs. There is still some oak to be subsumed towards the finish, which has mouth-gripping tannins. It is still very youthful, although after almost ten years, we have to wait and see what secondary delights it may muster. (NM 94) 1 bottle of Numanthia Numanthia 2005 The 2005 Numanthia was aged for 19 months in new French oak. Opaque purple, it has a superb perfume of violets, mineral, wood smoke, blueberry, and blackberry. This leads to a firm, very structured wine with questionable balance. The finish is long but tannic. This is a wine that demands cellaring but purchasing it is a gamble. (RP 92)

LOT 132 5 BOTTLES OF BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 1 bottle of Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano 1997 The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Madonna del Piano shows a rustic fringe (especially compared to the super-refined 1999 edition of the same wine) with some aromas of braised meat, pecorino cheese rind, black fruit, smoke and barbecue spice. It’s a wine with thicker bones, chunky parts and more abrupt movements. Having said that, its hearty, hometownhomeboy personality makes it just the kind of wine to pair with grilled meat and crunchy, oven-roasted potatoes with rosemary and olive oil. It’s definitely a wine that brings on your appetite. (ML 93) 1 bottle of Siro Pacenti Brunello di Montalcino 2006 The 2006 Brunello di Montalcino saturates the palate with deep layers of dark red fruit, violets, new leather and spices. The aromas and flavors grow beautifully with air, showing remarkable intensity all the way through to the expansive, textured finish. This is a brilliant effort from Giancarlo Pacenti. The Brunello saw 18-20 days on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging in French oak barrels, of which roughly 80% were new. The vineyard sources are approximately 4.5 hectares in Sant’Angelo and Piancornello (in the south of Montalcino) and 5 hectares in Pelagrilli (in the north). (AG 96) 1 bottle of Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2010 Castello Banfi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is one of the ripest wines I have tasted from this vintage. The bouquet opens to chewy tones of cherry or raspberry preserves with dried prunes and figs at the back. This is no surprise considering the softly sloping, sea-facing vineyards located in the lower part of the appellation where temperatures are slightly warmer on average. There is no doubt that this is an impeccably crafted wine (it sees 50-50 aging in French barrique and larger oak casks) that aspires to a great level of intensity, power and

B A C C H A N A L — 37

SILENT AUCTION fullness. The mouthfeel is round and immediate with sweet fruit flavors. This Brunello will appeal to those who like a softer side of Sangiovese. (ML 92) 1 bottle of Altesino Brunello di Montalcino 2010 Altesino's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino stands proud among its peers. No other wine I tasted among the new releases in Montalcino achieves this unique level of aromatic finesse and distinction. The bouquet is almost purely floral in character with a strong emphasis on pressed rose petal, dried violets and potpourri. The fruit tones are less emphatic and include bright cherry and red currant. In the mouth, the wine's compressed texture is accented by fennel seed and licorice. The 2009 vintage had more power and heat, but this version shows elegant restraint. (ML 93+) 1 bottle of Valdicava Brunello di Montalcino 2010 The gamy 2010 Brunello di Montalcino does a great job of presenting intensity and elegance all in the same delicious package. That's not easy to do and the excellent 2010 fruit plays a big role in achieving this goal. The wine offers a long succession of aromas that span from ripe fruit, to smoked meat, to grilled herb and soft spice. Delicate tones of licorice, cola and anise seed add life and energy. The list goes on. The wine's mouthfeel is best characterized by softness and structure, a two-fold approach that gives high hopes for the long aging potential of this wine. Valdicava's Brunello will appeal to those who love earthy and leathery notes in their Brunello. (ML 93) Donated by: Bob Victor and Lexa Edsall Value: $500

LOT 133 OFFICIAL CHILEAN PRESIDENTIAL GIFT BOX SET OF TWO BOUTIQUE WINES 1 bottle of 2010 Lahuen (Blend) by Terranoble, Central Valley Chile Succulent and juicy, with flavors of kirsch, dark plum and black fig, filled with notes of Asian spice. Tobacco leaf and bittersweet chocolate elements appear on the plush finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. 511 cases made. (JM 88) 1 bottle of 2010 Tatay de Cristobal (Carmenere) by Vina Von Siebenthal, Aconcagua Valley (90% carmenere and 10% petit verdot): Saturated ruby. Assertive aromas of blackcurrant, pipe tobacco, cocoa powder, licorice, mint and candied rose. Concentrated, focused and vibrant, offering intense flavors of dark berry preserves, bitter chocolate and spice cake. Finishes sappy and extremely long, with smoothly integrated tannins and an exotic touch of blood orange. Extremely impressive already but it's also built to age. LOT 135 2 BOTTLES OF DOMAINE DROUHIN OREGON PINOT NOIR LOUISE 2012 The 2012 Pinot Noir Louise is a barrel selection from the Laurene cuvée that in this particular vintage consists of 19 barrels. There is a subtle, seductive exoticism on the nose with plush raspberry and cranberry fruit inflected with a subtle marine influence that becomes more pronounced with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with caressing tannin and very well-judged acidity. This is very harmonious, a little reticent at first, but fanning out with confidence toward the finish adorned with blackberry, strawberry and allspice notes. Very persistent in the mouth, this is a superb Pinot Noir. (NM 93) Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $220

LOT 136 3 BOTTLES OF MOONE-TSAI BLACK LIST XVIII 2015 Bright ruby red in hue, our Black List XVIII beckons with enticing aromas of black and red fruits, and hints of shaved cedar. At the outset, the stealthy attack invites inspection with a layered salutation of flavors marked by blackberry, black cherry, plum, earth and cherry cola. Alluring, but focused, the wine’s underlying vigor reveals itself with a pleasing acidity, and purposeful structure defined by finely grained tannins that help affirm a satisfying and lengthy finish. While “pretty and pleasing” are likely to be recorded as first impressions of this coy cabernet; the wine’s ultimate bearing reveals a more deliberate and purposeful actor. Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $600

LOT 137 2 BOTTLES OF KUTCH PINOT NOIR FALSTAFF VINEYARD 2017 The 2017 Pinot Noir Falstaff Vineyard is another rich, dense wine in this lineup from Kutch. The Falstaff is the wildest and most savory of these Pinots. Game, tobacco, crushed leaves and smoke all add to the wine's earthy, feral personality. Here, too, the 100% whole clusters are beautifully woven into the wine's fabric. I would give the 2017 at least a few years in bottle to allow some of the tannin heft to soften. There is plenty of suppleness in the fruit waiting to emerge. (AG 94) Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $120

LOT 138 3 BOTTLES OF DUMOL CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2016 1 bottle of DuMOL Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Montecillo Vineyard captures all the personality of this site. Inky red/purplish berry fruit, grilled herbs, black pepper and licorice give the 2016 its distinct pungent character. The tannins are powerful, but all the elements are impeccably balanced. In 2016, Andy Smith crafted a Cabernet that is both potent and also very elegant. (AG 95) 2 bottles of DuMOL Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley A ripe, friendly style, with a creamy-textured core of cassis and cherry preserve flavors underscored by anise and apple wood notes that stay nicely melded with the fruit on the finish. There's a lingering cast iron note keeping this grounded. Best from 2021 through 2032. 640 cases made. (JM 93) Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $330 B A C C H A N A L — 40

LOT 139 2 BOTTLES OF DUMOL PINOT NOIR 2016/17 1 bottle of DuMOL Pinot Noir Wildrose Estate 2016 The 2016 Pinot Noir Wildrose Estate is a wine of real character and personality. Rose petal, mint, dried flowers, game, blood orange and incense all add an exotic quality that is impossible to miss. Beautifully perfumed and deep, the Wildrose has so much to offer. (AG 94+) 1 bottle of DuMOL Pinot Noir Highland Divide 2017 Intense cedary notes accent the dried berry and cherry flavors, backed by firm acidity. Flint details fill the powerful finish, along with plenty of mineral and spice elements. Drink now through 2023. 980 cases made. (JM 91) Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $200

LOT 140 6 BOTTLES OF REX HILL PINOT NOIR 2017 3 bottles of Rex Hill Reserve Vineyard Pinot Noir Pomegranate, prune, black cherry and concentrated blackberry notes mingle with tomato skin and slate rock on the nose. The palate is velvety and rich, the hallmark of the Reserve wines each year. Cacao and spice show through the redolent black fruits. With impeccable balance and tannin integration, the 2017 Rex Hill Reserve Pinot Noir is the perfect addition to the true collector’s cellar. 2 bottles of Rex Hill Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir Bright red fruits greet the nose right out of the glass: raspberry, cherry, cranberry and red plum. The pretty nose is lifted with hints of vanilla and dusty earth secondary to the bounty of red fruits. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and vibrant, with the perceptible warmth – a tribute to the vineyard – in balance with bright acidity and a light tannin structure. The finish is long and tapers perfectly at the end with a hint of cherry lingering. 1 bottle of Rex Hill Two Mules Vineyard Pinot Noir The first single-vineyard bottling from this exciting, beautiful vineyard does not disappoint. At first smell, classic Pinot notes of cherry cola and sarsaparilla jump out, followed by Asian spices, cinnamon, chocolate, and a hint of tomato leaf. The palate is well-integrated, with a tannic structure that points to a particularly long aging potential. Earthy notes of dried leaves and dusty cacao mingle with red fruits on the palate. LOT 141 1 DOUBLE MAGNUM BOTTLE OF LA JOTA CABERNET SAUVIGNON 1998 The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon 17th Anniversary Release offers a dark ruby color as well as a big, peppery, spicy, black currant, plum, mineral, earth, and dried herb-scented bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, with a fine texture in addition to a medium-weight, Bordeaux-like style, it has firm tannin, but not much lushness and complexity. It requires 2-3 years of cellaring, and should keep for 15-16 years. (RP 88) Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $300

LOT 142 6 BOTTLES OF HENTLEY FARM SHIRAZ THE BEAST 2014 The 2014 Shiraz The Beast spent 22 months in oak (65% new French), so it has a toasty, cedary veneer to it right now. There's plenty of cherry fruit, so just give it some time in the cellar before popping a cork. By then the oak will have morphed into lovely dried-spice elements adorning ripe cherries, and the full-bodied wine will show more elegance on the lingering finish. (RP 94) Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $550

LOT 143 6 BOTTLES OF DUMOL SYRAH 2016/17 3 bottles DuMOL Syrah Greywacke Vineyard Eddie’s Patch 2016 The 2016 Syrah Eddie’s Patch displays a deep garnet-purple color, with notes of blackberries, blueberries and plums plus hints of espresso, fertile earth, smoked meats, Indian spices and violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals a built-like-a-brick-house structure with ripe, grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with lots of exotic spice layers on the finish. (LB 94) 2 bottles of DuMOL Syrah Wild Mountainside Russian River Valley 2017 Black cherry, boysenberry, lavender, violet and green peppercorn are all present in the aroma. There's lovely clarity of flavor and purity of cool climate fruit: cassis and blackberry offset by thyme, tobacco and cocoa nib. A lushness of texture takes over with lingering black fruits and lilac on the peppery, extended finish. Drink this soon after release or enjoy the reward of 10+ years of aging. (JD 94)

1 bottle of DuMOL Syrah Estate Vineyard 2016 Creamy and beautifully textured, the 2016 Syrah Estate Vineyard is a winner from DuMol. Inky dark fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and black pepper all grace this exquisitely beautiful, expressive Syrah. The 2016 was done with 6% Viognier and 50% whole clusters, but what really comes through is the wine's sublime balance. (AG 95) Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $500

LOT 144 3 BOTTLES OF AL LAGO REDS 1 bottle of Al Lago 2014 Sonata Another incredible wine is the 2014 Sonata, which checks in as a mix of 44% Syrah, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Sangiovese, which comes from a mix of sites in Ventura County, Paso Robles and Arroyo Grande. Barrel fermented and aged 16 months in 70% new French oak, this beauty offers classy notes of creme de cassis, crushed violets, graphite and wet rock to go with a pure, elegant, seamless style on the palate. Like all of the wines from Guillaume Fabre, it's impeccably made and shines for its sheer pedigree and purity. Drink it anytime over the coming decade. (JD 94) 2 bottles of Al Lago 2015 Aria A blend of 95% Syrah and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 Aria reveals a medium to deep garnet-purple color and nose of black forest cake, warm black plums and cassis with hints of dark chocolate, dried Provence herbs, black pepper and spice box plus a waft of charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is packed with expressive black fruits and spicy layers, supported by ripe, rounded tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with great length. Produced by Guillaume Fabre of Clos Solene, this is a wine of fantastic elegance and sophistication, though sadly only 65 cases are available. (LB 92) Donated by: Kelly and Joe Culley Value: $200

Dom Perignon 2003: Special Edition by David Lynch The 2003 Dom Pérignon is maturing very gracefully in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of smoke, bread dough, waxy lemon rind and confit citrus. On the palate, the wine is ample, vinous and full-bodied but retains excellent definition, and it's structured around chewy dry extract from mature skins, which compensates for its comparative lack of acidity. LOT 1 GREAT TUSCAN WINES 1996-2012

Value: $1,600

1 bottle of 1996 Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia is superb this year. One of the best in years, with currant and blackberry and hints of mint. Full-bodied, with excellent tannin structure and a lovely, sweet berry aftertaste. Best after 2000. 13,750 cases made. (JS 94) 1 bottle of 1997 San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo Toscana I GT The 1997 Percarlo impresses for its pure seduction. It is also impossibly young. Dark red cherries, flowers and mint wrap around the palate in this sensual, inviting wine. In keeping with the qualities of the warm year, the 1997 emphasizes textural depth and richness rather than the more aromatic, firm style that defines cooler years such as 1996. Layers of fruit built to the huge, textured finish. This is a decidedly flashy wine. I have always had a soft spot for the 1997. This bottle more than exceeded my expectations. (AG 97) 1 bottle of 1999 Antinori Tignanello Toscana I GT Pale garnet colour with a touch of brick. The nose is a little closed and restrained yet with some coaxing opens out into an amazing array of dark cherry, dried cranberry, forest floor and tobacco aromas with an exotic sprinkling of Chinese five spice. The palate fills the entire mouth with ripe, concentrated fruit. Perfectly balanced with high acidity and a medium+ level of fine tannins. Very long finish. Still youthful. (LB 95) 1 bottle of 1999 Argiano Solengo Toscana I GT A fine offering, the 1999 Solengo is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, and Syrah. This opaque purple-colored offering exhibits gorgeously ripe blackberry and cassis fruit mixed with scents of leather, charcoal, earth, and wood. Dense, opulent, and full-bodied, with sweet tannin in the finish, it is still youthful and unevolved. (RP 94) 1 bottle of 2006 Rocca di Montegrossi Geremia Toscana IGT The 2006 Geremia is a marvelous, explosive wine that saturates the palate with layers of blackberries, blueberries, minerals, tar, smoke and herbs. The energy and sheer power of the fruit are remarkable, as is the wine’s nuance and polish. All of the elements flow together beautifully in the intense Geremia. The wine’s finesse and sense of balance are unmistakable. This is another gem from Rocca di Montegrossi. Geremia is a blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon that spent 27 months in medium toast Allier oak barrels, 70% new for the Merlot and 100% new for the Cabernet. The oak treatment seems better suited to international grapes than it does to the Sangiovese in the San Marcellino. Varietal character takes a back seat in this distinctly Tuscan thoroughbred that readers will not want to miss. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2031. (AG 95+)

LIVE AUCTION 1 bottle of 2006 Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino Good deep, full red. Knockout nose offers black fruits, licorice, curry powder and rose oil, plus a hint of leather; Musigny meets Barbaresco. Silky and sweet, but with terrific grip and class. Conveys an impression of density and thickness without weight. Wonderfully tactile wine with a savory, mineral-driven finish and outstanding saline persistence. Built to age, and yet this wine is impeccably balanced from day one. (ST 96) 1 bottle of 2007 Montepeloso Nardo Toscana IGT The 2007 Nardo bursts onto the palate with an array of fresh, vibrant cherries, strawberries and flowers. The wine turns darker and weightier in the glass, with sweet, candied aromas that emerge, leading to a sensual, totally alluring finish. Silky tannins frame the explosive fruit with superb elegance. In 2007, the final blend was 35% Montepulciano, 35% Sangiovese, 22% Marselan and 8% Alicante Bouschet. The wine was aged in a combination of new and old barriques and larger demi-muids. Today, Nardo comes across as the most accessible of Montepeloso’s 2007s. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. (AG 95) 2 bottles of 2008 Sette Ponti Oreno Toscana IGT The 2008 Oreno is stunningly beautiful. An open, expressive bouquet laced with mint, red berries, roses and spices emerges with superb clarity and balance. The tension between the minerality of the vintage and the rich expression of fruit that is one of the house’s hallmarks play off each other beautifully here. The finish is utterly exquisite in its beguiling beauty. The 2008 isn’t the most powerful Oreno ever made, but it is quite possibly the most elegant, impeccably refined wine I have ever tasted here. Simply put, it is fabulous juice! In 2008, the percentage of Sangiovese is way down and Oreno is predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, a decision that has paid off handsomely. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. (AG 96) 2 bottles of 2010 Gaja Ca’ Marcanda Magari Toscana IGT Showing spectacular traits of the vintage, the 2010 Magari (50% Merlot and 25% each Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc) is a dark and modern wine with a thick fabric of dark fruit, blackberry preserves, spice and tobacco woven tightly together. The mouthfeel is exceedingly plush and there’s a sweet oak note of toasted almond or Spanish cedar on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2026. (WA 94)

1 bottle of 2012 Fattoria Le Pupille Maremma Toscana Saffredi A phenomenal Saffredi with so much structure and length. It’s full-bodied yet remains agile and lively. Aromas and flavors of currants, mint and wet earth. Full-bodied, chewy and powerful. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. This has a special label celebrating the 25th anniversary of the production of this wine. It's the greatest Saffredi ever, cementing its reputation as the Lafite of Tuscany. This needs at least five years in bottle but it’s entrancing to drink now. A must-buy for Super Tuscan lovers. (JS 100)

LOT 8 THE BEST FROM 1999

Value: $3,000 1 bottle of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Cuvée Duvault-Blochet 1999 The bouquet is a treat: decayed red berry fruit, sage and peppermint, just a soupçon of wild fennel all at the liminal point as primary tips into secondary aromas. The palate is soft and mellow on the entry with a subtle meaty/dried blood quality, fine tannin and welljudged acidity that keeps this linear and focused. There is just a pinch of spice on the finish that strangely brought to mind more Chambolle than Vosne-Romanée, not that I am complaining. (NM 93) 1 bottle of Domaine Lecheneaut Nuit St Georges Nuit St Georges 1er Cru Les Damodes 1999 Medium, slightly dull red with some amber at the edge. Balsamic aromas of prune, brown spices and leather turned a bit darker and fresher with air but remained somewhat generic, like mature Côte de Nuits Burgundy. A bit simple and warm but with its inviting decadent sweetness countered by a bit more acidity than I would have expected from the nose. Still, this premier cru doesn't quite come alive. Finishes with dusty tannins. (ST 90+) 1 bottle of Chateau Lynch Bages 1999 A charming, lush, round, generous Lynch Bages, the 1999 offers plenty of sweet black currant fruit, damp earth, licorice, cedarwood and spicy herb-like characteristics. Mediumbodied, savory and broad in the mouth with no hard edges, this fully mature effort is a somewhat underrated vintage for this estate. Enjoy it over the next decade. (RP 90) 1 bottle of Colgin Cariad 1999 There are 450 cases of this blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The 1999 Cariad has aged beautifully, revealing abundant notes of cedar wood, sweet blueberry and black currant fruit and camphor. Powerful and medium to full-bodied with sweet tannins, it appears to be close to full maturity. However, aging it another 12-15 years will be no problem. The wine is better than I initially rated it (91 points) and exhibits greater longevity. (RP 94) 1 bottle of Joseph Phelps Insignia 1999 Deep bright ruby. Captivating nose combines blackcurrant, crushed-rock minerality, licorice and violet, complemented by notes of cocoa powder, leather and earth. Densely packed and seriously concentrated, showing an almost chocolatey ripeness that's leavened by integrated acidity. Flavors of dark berries, minerals and flowers saturate the palate and spread out on the very suave, subtly long aftertaste. There's no easy sweetness here but the wine's noble tannins and considerable finesse give it great appeal today. This beautiful blend should go on for many more years on its extract and balance. BOTTLE SIZES Wine comes in all manner of containers, from clay crocks to collapsible plastic bags. Fine wines, however, come mostly in bottles, which vary widely in shape, size, and color. Most bottles are made of glass: white wines generally come in clear glass and red wines in dark green glass, although there is no absolute rule. Shapes vary as well and range from the straight-sided, high-shouldered bottle used for Bordeaux wines, Italian Chiantis, or Valpolicellos and for most Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlots, to the slope-shouldered bottles used for Burgundy, Beaujolais, and Rhone wines, Italian Barolos, and most Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. There are also longer, more slender bottles used for German Alsatian wines and for some U.S. bottlings of Chenin Blanc, Riesling, or Gewürztraminer. And there are many other variables—again, there is no rule.

Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists and the Politics of Scale Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists and the Politics of Scale examines the approaches of women artists for whom space is a critical feature of their work, whether they take the space on a wall, the real estate of a room through sculpture and installation, engage seriality as a spatial visual practice, cast a wide legacy in art history or claim the space of their body. This exhibition invites viewers to consider how size and repetition can be interpreted as political gestures in the practices of many women artists. Curators: Jodi Throckmorton, curator of contemporary art, and Brittany Webb, curator of the John Rhoden Collection
