Message from the Dean Messages from Faculty Master of Fine Arts Post-Baccelaureate Program Bachelor of Fine Arts Certificate Program PAFA/Penn BFA Student Life Faculty Class of 2020
MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Clint Jukkala, Dean of the School of Fine Arts
Dear Class of 2020, Wow, where to begin? In this time of incredible uncertainty, there is so much that we don’t know. Yet, there is nothing like having the rug pulled out from under one’s feet to clarify what is truly important. When I talk with prospective students about PAFA, two things I always say are: 1. PAFA attracts the best, most dedicated students, and 2. The community at PAFA is amazing. These things are now clearer to me than ever. When you first came to PAFA, you were already accomplished artists. You were good at what you did, but you didn’t want to simply polish your skills. You wanted to go exploring, turn over stones, and discover things you didn’t know. You wanted to ask hard questions, and not settle for easy answers. You have been courageous. On your journey, you left behind what you knew to try out new ways of seeing, thinking and making. You faced the difficulty that all artists face, of being alone in your studio, and you have continued your work through one of the most difficult times that we have ever experienced. This journey has been a community effort. The faculty have been by your side, and they have guided and challenged you. They’ve said the hard things that you may not have wanted to hear, but knew you needed to. Along with the staff, they have supported you throughout your time at PAFA, and will be rooting for you as you take your next steps. Most importantly, you have supported one another. Your friendships and shared purpose as artists will stay with you for years to come. The conversations you have had together in your studios will continue, and your work will take you in directions that none of us has yet imagined. I can’t wait to see it. Congratulations, class of 2020! Clint Jukkala
MESSAGES FROM FACULTY "Congratulations everyone on your hard work and amazing creativity. Patience, Courage and Hard Work are the qualities to cultivate as an artist, and a person." - Al Gury
"Congrats to you all on your hard work throughout your time here at PAFA! It’s always so exciting to see the work you’re making now in comparison to your First Year classes. I look forward to seeing it continue to evolve throughout your careers!" - Darla Jackson
"Huge congratulations on this accomplishment! Sending all my best and biggest hopes to you in your future endeavors. Remember that we all turn to art in times like these, it is of lasting value and very brave— what you have chosen for yourself." - Aubrey Levinthal
"Thank you to the MFA's that I had the pleasure to work with both as TA's and students! You made me feel welcome and at home at PAFA with your spirits and creative energy! Cheers to a new chapter of artmaking!" - Amy Lee Ketchum "Congratulations on your graduation from PAFA! This is a weird way to wrap things up, but I'm so excited for you, and wish you all the best with your next steps. I can't wait to hear what you'll do in the future!" - Jessica Abel

MASTER OF FINE ARTS
LAURA ANNE CARDEN She, Her, Hers | Master of Fine Arts https://www.lacardenart.com
"I’ll recall the star-covered ceiling of the Historic Landmark Building, sunbeams across paintings in the studio, flashed smiles of cohorts passing my open door. These two years have gone in an instant, yet I’ve grown stronger than I could’ve imagined."
"I’ll miss the laughter of friends from the next studio over, professors’ challenges and reassurances, and the smell of the 8th floor. Thank you, PAFA, for all of it."
AUTUMN CASEY She, Her, Hers Master of Fine Arts www.autumncasey.blogspot.com

"One of the best things that I've learned from PAFA is that when it comes to who you are as an artist and your influence, you should never leave it out of anything. That things that you love and are interested in are what make you who you are and therefore make your art specifically you. Who can be better at being you than you? No one. Be yourself and trust yourself as it will fuel your artistic practice forever. My favorite memories of my time at Pafa in the Mfa program is expanding my knowledge and experience through conversations with my peers and faculty and meeting my loving partner, Ashley Garner."
BERNADETTE COLBURN
She, Her, Hers | Master of Fine Arts
"When I first arrived at PAFA, I considered myself a painter. Within the first month, I soon realized that I am really a sculptor at heart. My first assignment in my sculpture class was to make 40 small sculptures using found materials. I had to work quickly and think outside of the box to create uniquely individual sculptures. I responded positively to the tactile experience of making these pieces and found that sculpture is a language that allows me to more fully express my ideas as an artist. I never would have explored this medium if I hadn't come to PAFA. The teachers always encourage us to try new ways of thinking and making. These experiences feed into our artwork and also give us new skills and confidence in our future art projects."
PATRICIA CONNELLY
She, Her, Hers | Master of Fine Arts
"Loved the diversity of works, students, and opinions. Stretching/breaking boundaries."
VICTORIA DAVIS She, Her, Hers Master of Fine Arts
https://www.victoriavdavis.com
"A few of my favorite things about my PAFA experience: Kevin Richard's lectures (while he paced) in Reframing Theory
and Contemporary Art seminars, being a GA in Dan Miller's advanced printing class, being a part of the Shaw Island Artist Residency, and spending many hours everyday on the 8th floor."
RACHEL FALZON She, Her, Hers | Master of Fine Arts https://www.rachelfalzonart.com
"These last two years flew by more quickly than expected, but I know that each critique and connection will last far longer. I am grateful to have experienced the opportunities that PAFA provided. There are few academic institutions where I would be able to enjoy overnight drawing marathons in my studio or have the chance to work with cadavers at Hahnemann’s Anatomy Lab."
LILLY FURNISS
She, Her, Hers | Master of Fine Arts https://www.lilyfurniss.com
"My favorite advice that I've ever gotten in PAFA happened during my first semester. A visiting critic came to my studio for the first time and said, "It's clear that you draw well, but who gives a sh*t?" This wonderfully crude statement really pushed me to make the best and most thoughtful work I can."
ASHLEY GARNER
She, Her, Hers Master of Fine Arts https://www.thecolorg.com
"I've learned so much at PAFA that I don't even recognize the person or artist that I was when I got here. The amazing faculty, critics, and staff have helped me to find my voice as a contemporary artist and to find my way in the art world. On top of my art and studio education, I met Neill, my partner and love for life. We have had the amazing opportunity to grow together in a graduate program that we both had always dreamed of attending. For all of this, I couldn't be more grateful. PAFA has changed my life, I will never forget what I've learned here, and what has happened over these quick, incredibly important 2 years of study."
MARNIE GELFMAN She, Her, Hers Master of Fine Arts
"I have loved devoting the last few years ( first through the Post-Bacc and then the MFA program) cultivating and expanding my creative life as an Artist. Pafa has provided an environment rich in creative expression, critical thinking, multidisciplinary approaches and various viewpoints." "I have grown from this experience in so many ways and look forward to always having a working practice in my life. It has been a pleasure meeting like minded artists (students and professors) through the Pafa, the oldest art school and museum in the Country."
SARA K. HAVEKOTTE She, Her, Hers | Master of Fine Arts http://sarahavekotte.com
"I really loved seeing how my peer's grew both personally and in their work. We jumped so many hurdles together."
JOHN HOLSINGER He, Him, His Master of Fine Arts

"It’s striking to stop and imagine—had I made other life decisions, or if seemingly arbitrary events had not occurred how they had—how easily my experience at PAFA could have never have happened. Sometimes, it somehow seems I only barely came to have this experience, but of course, I’m very glad I did. I remain unconvinced that there was any better time or place to get an MFA than right here and now, at PAFA, in this bizarro year of 2020."
DORI MILLER

"Installing my exhibition in the Broad Street Gallery is a major highlight of my time here. The work pictured (Autopaint: Red) was an act of rebellion in my first year. I was pushed to step away from painting. If I was not to paint in my studio, then somebody would. It is my privilege to be but one raindrop in the eternal ocean that is PAFA."

MORGAN OSBURN
She, Her, Hers Master of Fine Arts www.morganosburn.com
"I love my critics. They are my biggest supporters and helped mold my work into a thriving world of personal meaning and symbolism. Their guidance and critique is what encouraged me to explore connections between what I thought were unrelated practices, to a point that now everything is synonymous and fused."
BHOOMI S. PATEL She, Her, Hers | Master of Fine Arts
"Installation and video art always fascinated me. However, being a painter, I was afraid to explore new mediums. I did not even know basic editing software like photoshop when I came to PAFA. I audited an undergraduate class to learn digital art. And eventually, I adapted that into my studio practice. From not knowing anything about digital art, I am working successfully in experimental video art in 2 years! PAFA gave me confidence of learning new things that I was afraid of trying.Â
PAFA taught me not knowing something is not shameful, but an opportunity to learn it. The community, my peers, faculties... I am heartily grateful to be part of such a surrounding that, without any doubts, helped me flourish myself as an artist and as a person. Whoever I am today and will be as an artist, the credit goes to PAFA."

"I started taking classes at PAFA as a high school student in 2012. Some of my favorite memories at pafa are: - Witnessing Hoang open a box from the 1950's filled with old newspapers and human remains that were checked out of the academy and never returned. - Seeing my first Kiki Smith piece as a high school student - Listening to Phantom of the Opera for the first time in the woodshop while preparing for the 2017 ASE. - Celebrating Diwali and dancing in circles until I was dizzy. - The opening of the first show I assisted in organizing and curating, Jump Into the Fire, at Atelier Gallery".

"I came to PAFA to study painting but ended up being way more interested in the interdisciplinary aspect of the program and experimenting with photography, sculpture, and printmaking... My favorite days at PAFA were the ones I spent running up and down the stairs between my studio, the sculpture department, the print shop, the library, a stop at 810 to see what someone is hammering/sewing/making, and back to my studio."

HEATHER PALMER She, Her, Hers | Post-BaccÂ
"One of my favorite memories at PAFA was the day we had class on the roof. It was an unusually warm November day and Kaitlin Pomerantz decided to have our seminar class on the 11th floor. We had delicious snacks, big chats, and much needed sunshine. It was a wonderful break from our normal seminar rhythm."

"PAFA gave me the amazing opportunity to backpack through Europe in the summer of 2019. I earned the opportunity to see the Holocaust camps and memorials of WWII, from the crypts in Berlin to the "Bone Church" in Prague. I definitely did not expect my career path at PAFA to lead me to work with human remains, but now I am the bone lady #postmortem #facialreconstruction. It is fitting that my graduation is canceled due to a world-wide pandemic; but, I am thankful for what an amazing ride the past four years have been."

"My time at Pafa has taught me the value of friendship. I feel very lucky and honored to have met a plethora of incredible people at Pafa––people who have loved and supported me in my darkest hours, and friends who have made me laugh so hard I cried, and maybe, even peed myself a little. I’m proud of myself and thankful for the adventures I’ve embarked on with the friends I’ve made during these four years."

"Attending PAFA as an older non-binary student has been an unforgettable experience. I'm so proud to have attended such a school and to have formed great relationships with other students as well as professors. I never thought I could feel so at home at a school and to feel so accepted by a community of people. Memories of the many late nights I spent in the print shop with other students are ones I will treasure for a lifetime!"

"What makes PAFA a deeply nurturing, highly motivating, and consistently challenging environment is our faculty and staff. What I’ve learned from them far exceeds learning to make a compelling image: they’ve taught me that I’m not limited to what I can achieve alone.
PAFA is a diverse network of perspectives and connections waiting for you to ask for help. Simply asking has revealed a world of opportunities which have inspired a vision for my future."

"PAFA opened my eyes to all kinds of artwork and people. I am so thankful for the opportunity to learn around those that have such varied interests to my own. Also, as varied as the students are it always feels like we're all on the same side. No matter what we make we believe in the importance of art."
MIGYO (SIA) KIM

"In my studio, I grab a pencil to draw the image that’s in my mind. I don't make plans. I just work instinctively. I’m not concerned with where it starts or where it ends. It's enough for me to follow my intuition. I draw a circle. It expresses myself, the nucleus. From that circle, from that core, everything starts. Every touch and every mark starts to create a space filled with non-material energy." "Our world is full of non-material energy. The energy can be explained not only as an energy with the power to operate something but also mental energy. That kind of energy always surrounds us and constitutes the world. It's undoubtedly alive and fluid. This energy is connected and can be shared, and, in that way, I think all of us are connected. At the same time, as individuals, we organize our own worlds. Simply put, we are all individuals with our own cores, but we are also all connected because the world is comprised of active, fluid nonmaterial energy that is being shared."

There were lots of changes, challenges, surprises and self discoveries in my academic, and personal life since I stepped onto this campus. Blessings in strange packages, to say the least. I'm still after the same dream, and have many miles to go before I sleep. Onward to the next chapter."

"As a transfer student, I'd say that PAFA has a great community of people, especially in the sculpture department. Through the people around me, I slowly became the artist I am. That confidence and determination I grew is reflected on my sculptures. Heading towards more detailed and large scale work, I've learned that I am an ambitious person. I definitely won't forget how I've been associates as the "log person" of the 7th floor."
MIMI SIMON She, Her, Hers Bachelor of Fine Arts http://mimisimon.com
"I feel like I am a different person than the one who entered the Academy four years ago. It's not because of
any specific class I took or assignment I completed. Instead, I feel so changed because i've been able to find and connect with people who share a similar passion. That has opened by eyes to art and art making in ways I never could have imagined. I think that's the most important opportunity you get while being in school: the ability to find those people who will be with you on the artistic journey long term."

I learned that being an artist is a flourishing, challenging, beautiful lifestyle. I look at the world differently, and my conversations have elevated. Now I'm studying at the University of Pennsylvania, something I never thought I'd be doing. The greatest part of my experience here has been witnessing some incredible people speak, grow, be vulnerable and live their truth. I've learned how essential community is and I've made some life long artist friends."

"I remember walking through the cast hall at 18 and being enamored by the casts and the rich history of the academy. I was sold on the legacy of the artists that walked the halls before me, the massive windows, the natural light that illuminates the towering sculptures, and ecorche projects. The clay dust in the air and paint-stained wooden floors scratched from dragging easels across them for decades and especially the professors who are nearly as eclectic as the building itself. I’m so proud to be an alum and will always cherish my PAFA memories."

"Dear Friends, I'm at a loss for words on this one - what can we say? (The pop band XTC has a lyric "There is no language in our lungs" Pretty much sums this message up) This momentous global event aligns with your culminating time at PAFA - One that I have experienced myself - at both the undergrad and graduate level - therefore I can relate in a 'local' way. We are a small/close knit community and the ASE is a unique and memorable experience for all involved. It is a long running tradition that has been sidelined - for now. And yet - we know that it will happen in September and it will be a fantastic display of incredible art. Guaranteed - when so little today can be said to be certain - I am certain of this. So hang in - get ready for an interesting summer - and know that for better or worse, your PAFA capstone year will be like no other, and will mark a sea change for us/you forever. Forever is a long time. Can't wait to see you again" - Michael Gallagher
