AROUND THE WORLD: AN OUTSTANDING COLLECTION OF EXTRAORDINARY WINES
Churchill Porto Vintage 2011 Offers intense aromas and flavors of violet, cherry and dark plum, showing an almost exotic velvety nature, with loads of cream and spice accents. Delivers notes of chocolate and vanilla extract on the explosive finish. Very alluring. Best from 2030 through 2060. (WS 97) Quinta do Noval Porto Vintage 2011 The 2013 Vintage Port is a blend of 20% Touriga Nacional; 10% Tinta Roriz and 70% old vines (of which Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz predominated, the winery noted), and it was aged for 18 months in wood. It comes in at 94 grams per liter of residual sugar. The initial impression of lushness fades quickly, because this is all about the power just now. You shouldn't even think of approaching it now. This will need a consumer with a cellar and some patience. That patience should be rewarded in time. All that said, by the end of the week, after some six days open, it actually started becoming more approachable. It wasn't quite as intense as the 2011 or as open as the 2012. Falling in the middle, it will certainly need time to come into full balance and become more expressive. It will reward your patience. (RP 95) Tenuta dell Ornellaia Ornellaia 2011 A dark and inky red, featuring violet, black currant, cedar, sandalwood and iron aromas and flavors. Nonetheless, this comes across as elegant, even as the tannins prove formidable on the finish.

A terrific young wine in the making. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2017 through 2035. (WS 96) Antinori Solaia Toscana IGT 2010 The 2010 Solaia puts on an incredible show that hits all the senses and keeps your unyielding attention for as long as there is wine in the bottle. There are various ways to describe the bouquet. First, is the wine’s sweet side, as this beautiful 75-20-5 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc delivers ripe cherry, black currant, baking spice and dark chocolate. After that, the wine becomes redolent of tobacco, balsam, bay leaf, rum cake and dark licorice. The bouquet is all encompassing and complete. A firmly structured backbone is padded generously by the fleshy richness of its consistency. This is a gorgeous wine that will age for decades. (RP 97) Pio Cesare ‘Il Bricco’ Barbaresco 2010 High acidity, steely and almost lean, but amazingly perfumed. (Decanter 95) Fontanafredda ‘La Rosa’ Barolo 2008 Fine harmony and sweet cherry and berry flavors are the hallmarks of this rich Barolo. Licorice, spice and tobacco flavors add depth as it stays focused and persistent through the finish. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated. Best from 2015 through 2033. 1,500 cases made. (WS 95) Antinori Guado al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore DOC 2011 The wine's appearance is dark and luscious with thick extraction and a vibrant dark garnet hue. Generous aromas of dark fruit, tobacco and chocolate lift steadily from the glass. The mouthfeel is soft and yielding with a great sense of tannic persistency that holds up the finish, which can be counted in many long minutes. Give this wine five years or more to fully evolve. (WS 95) Domaine Pierre Gelin Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 2012 The aromas are reticent here, but this delivers on the palate, with intense flavors of rose, strawberry, cherry, licorice, spice and mineral. Complex and elegant, with superb definition and a lingering aftertaste. Best from 2019 through 2035. (WS 95) Louis Jadot Echezeaux 2011 Medium red. Vibrant aromas of red cherry, cranberry, pomegranate, spices and nutty oak. Broad and savory on the palate; in a dry style but shows good weight and texture to its flavors of tart red berries and spices. Nicely filled in, yet at the same time taut and penetrating. Finishes with ripe tannins, sneaky subtle sweetness and a lovely light touch. (ST 92) Patrick Piuze Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2013 The 2012 Chablis Les Clos is unusually rich, ample and textured, with huge fruit and a level of explosive energy that is impossible to miss. Readers who seek subtlety will need to cellar the Clos for at least a few years to allow some of the considerable baby fat to melt away. Hints of petrol, smoke and licorice meld into the seamless, voluptuous finish. (Vinous 93) Domaine de la Grange des Peres Vin de Pays de l'Herault Rouge 2011 Attaining cult wine status is not an easy feat, and certainly not when the odds are stacked against you. Laurent Vaillé has achieved what others thought impossible. Having spent his early career training under such masters as Jean-François Coche-Dury (Meursault), Gérard Chave (Hermitage), and Eloi Durrbach (Domaine Trévallon, Provence), he settled in the l’Hérault of the Languedoc and purchased his own land in 1989, near Aniane. The wine: Under silky-smooth fruit on the nose there is an incredible, almost explosive complexity. Deep aromas, where the fruit meshes with spices, forest floor, and crushed limestone. Now imagine what happens after a little bit of cellar age. (Kermit Lynch Importer) Stags Leap Wine Cellars SLV 2012 The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon S.L.V. is a paragon of elegance and finesse, yet doesn't cheat the taster on flavor. Dense ruby/purple with round, juicy, earthy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, underbrush and forest floor, the wine is fragrant, medium to full-bodied, soft, seductive and round. This is a lovely, juicy, pure style of wine to drink over the next 10-15 years. (RP 92) Donated by: Chris Nixon

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE CASE: 94 POINTS AND HIGHER!
Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Folie 2007 Deep ruby. Explosively perfumed aromas of dark berries, spicecake, anise and dried flowers. Sweet, palate-staining black raspberry and cassis flavors are energized by juicy acidity and framed by soft tannins. The spiciness builds on the impressively broad and persistent finish. (AG 94) Les Cailloux (Lucien et André Brunel) Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 The finest vintage for the classic cuvée ever, the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape is a sensational blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 12% Syrah and the balance other permitted varieties. Aged mostly in tank, it offers a massive array of smoked herbs, lavender, black raspberries, toasted nuts, truffle and garrigue. Full-bodied, ripe, decadent and concentrated, it has slightly less structure than the '09, but has more raw material. This flat-out awesome Châteauneuf will have 20 years of longevity. (RP 95) Domaine Charvin Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 The 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape is the finest wine ever made at Charvin. Their wines never achieve a lot of color, but this is one of the most saturated ones they have produced. The blend from the 45- to 50-year-old vines is 85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah, Mourvedre, and Vaccarese, all aged in cement tanks prior to being bottled unfiltered. A terrific nose of kirsch, lavender, licorice, forest floor, and spice box soars from the glass of this full-bodied effort. With fabulous density, a multidimensional mouthfeel, and a 45+-second finish this brilliant, elegant, feminine-styled wine is loaded with concentration and intensity. Like many 2007 Châteauneuf du Papes, the extraordinary fruit level makes it hard to resist. However, it will be even better in 3-5 years, and should last for 15-20. (RP 97) Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 One of the top wines in this incredible vintage is Avril's 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape, which is the normal blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah and the rest of mix of permitted varieties. Brought up all in older foudre, it's a blockbuster, almost over-the-top, effort that gives up notes of kirsch, incense, dried flowers, spice and pepper. Deep, full-bodied, massively concentrated, unctuous and downright sexy, it needs another 2-3 years of cellaring and will have 30 years or more of overall longevity. (RP 99) Clos du Mont-Olivet Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Cuvée du Papet 2007 The 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape La Cuvée du Papet may well turn out to be their finest example since the 1998 and 1990. Stylistically, it probably comes closest to resembling the legendary 1990. Notes of roasted meats and smoked duck, with Provencal herbs, truffle, incense, licorice, and pepper, are all there, plus enormous quantities of red and black fruits. This is one heck of a complex wine, with a bouquet that is the essence of southern France, in particular Provence. Fullbodied, powerful, with the glycerin and level of richness covering some lofty tannins, this wine is already accessible and nearly impossible to resist. (RP 98) Domaine Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée les Grenaches de Pierre 2007 Representing the essence of Provence, the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Grenaches de Pierre is a brilliant example of 100% Grenache from 100-year-old vines. After spending 18 months in concrete tanks prior to being bottled unfiltered, it boasts an exquisite nose of lavender, garrigue,
• 26 •
kirsch liqueur, and black currants. The explosive aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, layered wine with velvety tannins as well as an opulent, multilayered texture. This sensational effort should drink well for 15-20 years. (RP 99) Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines 2007 The 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Origines (50% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and 20% Syrah aged in small new oak barrels) is somewhat of an anomaly with such an amount of new oak, but it never seems to show given the wine's concentration and richness. This may be the estate's finest example of this cuvée, which generally represents 1,200-1,500 cases, all from their holdings in the northern sector of the appellation. A saturated purple color is accompanied by aromas of smoke, camphor, crème de cassis, licorice, and blueberries, amazing concentration, a full-bodied texture, and a stunningly long finish. The tannins are present, but silky, and the vintage's freshness and vibrant fruit are evident. Powerful and loaded with substance, but at the same time endearingly elegant and ethereal, it will benefit from another 2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 15+. (RP 96) Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin 2007 Showing a smidge of worrisome volatile acidity, the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Chaupin nevertheless has off-the-hook levels of richness and depth. Spring flowers, blackberry, cassis, licorice, violets and white pepper are all present here, and it’s a massive wine on the palate, with big fruit, a voluptuous texture and a great finish. (RP 98) Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois 2007 Evolving beautifully, the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée de La Reine des Bois has shed some of its crazy tannin and is showing a more layered, voluptuous profile. Possessing beautiful kirsch, blackberry, candied licorice, flowers and lavender, it offers knockout richness and decadence to go with brilliant purity of fruit, superb concentration, and a full-bodied, layered mouthfeel. While I don’t think it matches the ’01 or ’10, it’s an incredible bottle of wine that can be consumed anytime over the coming 10-15 years. (RP 97) Domaine Saint Préfert Châteauneuf-du-Pape Collection Charles Giraud 2007 The 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Collection Charles Giraud is off-the-charts! More voluptuous and hedonistic than the 2010, it offers a smorgasbord of black raspberry, blackberry, licorice, roasted herbs and cured meats that flow to a massive, full-bodied wine that has nothing out of place. Incredibly concentrated, layered, pure and seamless, it is an incredible Châteauneuf to drink over the coming 15 years. (RP 100) Domaine de la Solitude Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Secrète 2007 A wine that seems to bridge the gap between a full international style (such as the Barberini) and a traditional style (such as the Cornelia Constanza) is the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Reserve Secrete, which was aged in small barrels (65%) and tanks (35%). A blend of 55% Syrah and 45% Grenache, it boasts a deep ruby/purple hue, massive, powerful flavors of black fruits, licorice, acacia flowers, and a hint of toast, full body, and a singular, dense personality. It needs 3-4 years of bottle age, and is meant for 20+ years of cellaring. (RP 95+) Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 Up there with the 2010 in terms of quality, the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape dishes out loads of plum, lavender, ground pepper and licorice in its full-bodied, ripe and layered profile. Possessing a rock-star texture, no hard edges and beautiful concentration, it’s drinking nicely now, and should continue to evolve gracefully for another decade. (RP 96) Donated by: Dr. Donna Barbot and Dr. William McGowan

A THREE BOTTLE VERTICAL WILLIAM COLE “CUVÉE CLAIRE” CABERNET SAUVIGNON NAPA VALLEY 2009 - 2011 2009: William Ballentine is a fourth-generation winemaker, born and raised on the family vineyard in St. Helena. From the winemaker: “Cultivated primarily from our estate vines, this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is the cornerstone of our portfolio. Named after our daughter, the Cuvée Claire is allowed to work its magic slowly, which results in a complex, elegant wine that represents the best of Napa Valley”. (Winemaker’s Notes) 2010: Intense aromas of cassis, licorice and earth jump from the glass of this dense purplecolored wine. A cascade of fruit hides some serious structure in this rich, juicy, full-bodied, young, primary 2010. Bursting with potential, this intriguing wine should be forgotten for 1-3 years and drunk over the following 15+. (RP 93) 2011: Dark ruby in color, the 2011 opens with notes of black cherry, red currants and notes of leather which lead into earthy notes of sage, rosemary and baking spices. The aromas echo on the palate with hints of black pepper and juniper. The wine is smooth and full with soft tannins, balanced acidity and an elegant finish. (Winemaker’s Notes) Donated by: Joan Sharp

Fullbodied and voluptuously textured, the 2010 is on a slightly faster evolutionary track than the 2009 (somewhat of an anomaly for these two vintages). This exquisite as well as prodigious 2010 can be drunk young, but it should age effortlessly for 20-25 years. Bravo! (RP 100) Donated by: Stephen G. Somkuti, MD PhD and Eniko Mara-Somkuti

JEROBOAM OF KRUG GRANDE CUVÉE Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: a blend of more than 120 wines from ten or more different years. Its exceptional finesse is the result of a stay of at least another six years in the cellars. Over twenty years are needed to craft each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée: the first prestige cuvée re-created each year, beyond the very notion of vintage. (Winemaker’s Notes) Donated by: Krug

SIX BOTTLE CASE CONTINUUM 2010 This has been an impressive, serious wine since the debut vintage, and Tim Mondavi's estate high on Pritchard Hill has fashioned a 2010 blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Cabernet Franc, 11% Petit Verdot and 4% Merlot. Gorgeously ripe, intricate and nuanced, with aromas of spring flowers and red and black fruits, a stunning texture, sweet tannin, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and undeniable elegance and finesse, this complex beauty cascades over the palate without a hard edge to be found. It is a tribute to Mondavi’s long resume of skillful winemaking. Black currants, blueberries and a touch of raspberries are all compelling and persistent. Drink this gorgeous Napa red now and over the next 15+ years. (RP 97) Donated by: Anne McCollum

1 CASE, 3-VINTAGE VERTICAL TIN BARN VINEYARDS SYRAH CORYELLE FIELDS SONOMA COAST 2012-2014 Our cool climate Syrah comes from the coastal hills east of Jenner, in a remote vineyard on our namesake Tin Barn Road. Sourced from a rocky hillside block just at the fog line (elevation 1000 feet) the fruit ripens slowly in the coastal air. As a result, this wine imparts a distinctive earthiness that is characteristic of Northern Rhône Syrah. The 2012 vintage features notes of bacon and blackberry with hints of leather. 2014 HOSPICES DE BEAUNE CORTON GRAND CRU 2014 HOSPICES DE BEAUNE CUVÉE CHARLOTTE DUMAY $250 GIFT CERTIFICATE TO THE CHANTICLEER RESTAURANT & GARDENS, NANTUCKET, MA
Anne and Susan bought the juice at the Hospices de Beaune charity auction organized by Christie's, held annually since 1859. With élevage by Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey (a young powerhouse in Burgundy with a cult following), the Saint-Romain is drinking well and the Corton has a long life ahead. The labels are dedicated to the travel adventures of these two friends and the shared passions of Nantucket and Beaune. 2014 Hospices de Beaune Corton Grand Cru, Cuvée Charlotte Dumay: 2014 is a magnificent vintage for the Hospices de Beaune red Cortons. As is traditional, these grapes came principally from Corton-Renardes, bringing power and structure, and from Corton-Bressandes, bringing perfume and finesse. Nose shows fresh, open fragrance and lovely fruit. Palate is well structured and fleshy, with tannins and acidity being in fine balance. The finish is long, with spicy aftertaste – an absolutely classic Corton. (Anthony Hanson, MW) 2014 Hospices de Beaune Saint-Romain (blanc), Cuvée Joseph Menault: This wine comes from two plots in Saint-Romain at different altitudes, with just 50 metres of height difference between them. The higher plot, known as Le Village Haut, lies alongside hilltop scrubland, and may be protected from the depredations of wild boar - who will eat the grapes, if given the chance - by carefully installed, electric fencing. The nose shows very pretty, fresh fruitiness. The palate is medium weight, with a fine balance between alcohol and acidity, and lively, attractive aftertaste. It was fermented in 600-litre, not-new large tuns, contributing to its richness and length. This is a well-balanced, fresh wine for early enjoyment. (Anthony Hanson, MW) The Chanticleer Restaurant & Gardens: “This elegant American dream in Sconset is what Nantucket dining is supposed to be: a sophisticated experience that revolves around a superb menu served amid lovely surroundings.” (Zagat) Donated by: Anne McCollum and Susan Handy, Proprietress, The Chanticleer

3 BOTTLE VERTICAL CAYMUS VINEYARDS SPECIAL SELECTION 1997-1999
1997: Bright ruby. Cassis, violet and lightly tarry, spicy oak. Ripe, dense and very concentrated; thick and deep. Not at all overly sweet or dominated by the wood. Has superb material and verve. Finishes very long, with thoroughly ripe tannins. The finest vintage (1997) for this wine in a long time, and one that avoids the excesses of (American) oak that have plagued so many recent vintages. (ST 93) 1998: Deep ruby-red. Cassis, peat, licorice, menthol and a whiff of green pepper on the nose. A juicy wine with good texture and extract, but not yet showing a lot of flavor development or personality. Finishes with firm, slightly dry tannins and licorice and herbal notes. (ST 88) 1999: The dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection reveals an overlay of sweet, toasty new oak intermixed with blackberries, currants, and vanilla with hints of tar, chocolate, and espresso. This big, sweet, juicy Cabernet is not the most complex effort. It is overt, flamboyant, and consumer-friendly. Drink it over the next 12-15 years. This Cabernet hardly represents cutting edge winemaking, but it remains immensely popular with most consumers. (RP 90) Donated by: Linda Aversa-Caldwell and Donald R. Caldwell

3L BOTTLE DUMOL CHARDONNAY 2014, SIGNED BY WINEMAKER The 2014 Chardonnay Estate Vineyard is endowed with a real sense of weight and richness. Deep, creamy and beautifully layered throughout, the 2014 is all about texture at this stage. Today, the wine is embryonic. This tightly-spaced vineyard yields wines of density and volume, and that is exactly what comes through here. Like all of the 2014s, the Estate offers tremendous freshness and energy. CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY COLLECTION: SIX BOTTLES JORDAN CHARDONNAY 2007 SIX BOTTLES KISTLER VINE HILL VINEYARD CHARDONNAY 2007
Jordan: Light yellow-gold. Spicy, gently leesy citrus and orchard fruit aromas are complemented by a zesty lemon zest quality. Firm citrus and green apple flavors are refreshingly brisk and dry, with good back-end mineral bite. The finish repeats the citrus and mineral notes and is refreshingly bitter. Nothing fat about this wine. (ST 88) Kistler: From the vineyard in front of the winery, the 2007 Chardonnay Vine Hill Vineyard is a muscular, powerful Chardonnay with notes of citrus oil, wood smoke, roasted nuts, and tropical

fruits. Superb concentration, considerable power, and a thick, layered mouthfeel with zesty acidity acts as a wonderful buttress to this large-scaled Chardonnay. (RP 93-95) Donated by: Rebecca and Gregory Segall

SPANISH AND AMERICAN RED COLLECTION: Three Bottles Dominio de Atauta Ribera del Duero 2005 Three Bottles Kistler Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2010 Three Bottles Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 Three Bottles Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2005
VALUE: $500
The 2005 Dominio de Atauta was aged in French oak, 20% new. Purple-colored, it offers an alluring array of mineral, black cherry, blackberry, and blueberry pie scents. This leads to a structured, balanced, tight wine that will require 6-8 years of cellaring. All the components are present but patience will be required. In short, this is not a wine for those unable to delay gratification. This is a true vins de garde that will require much patience but in the end, it will be rewarded. (JM 92) Ash, game, tar, licorice, incense and dark cherries are some of the notes that emerge from the 2010 Kistler Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir: A pretty, soft, understated wine, the 2010 also has a hint of wildness running through it. At present, the 2010 is a bit compact, but I very much like the sense of grace here. Sweet floral notes reappear on the finish, adding a burst of freshness and vivacity to a finish underpinned by lovely streaks of saline minerality. In 2010 yields were too low for Kistler to bottle the Cuvée Elizabeth Pinot. The little fruit that came in was blended into the Kistler Vineyard Pinot. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2020. (AG 93) 2005 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon: In its youth, this wine rewards those who let it sit in the glass and open up before discovering its generous character. At first, it presents dark fruit and floral aromas, then an earthy hint of rosemary and black truffle. Similar flavors unfold, including dark cherry, blueberryand plum that join with cocoa powder and spiced vanilla. This mouthfilling wine builds in richness and density through its long, smooth finish. Try it with a dryaged porterhouse steak, grilled game, or a wild mushroom tart. (Tasting Notes from the winery who won first place in the 1976 Judgment of Paris international “blind” wine tasting competition.) 2005 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon: Deep red. Red- and blackcurrant, cherry and menthol on the nose, with subtle vanilla, cola and tobacco notes adding complexity. Tightly wound red berry and bitter cherry flavors are framed by dusty tannins, picking up anise and herb notes on the back end. Understated and brisk, with good finishing clarity and mineral cut. QUILCEDA CREEK GALITZINE VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006 AND 2007
2006 - Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Vineyard, located in the Red Mountain AVA, is 100% varietal. Dark ruby/purple in color, it delivers an enticing nose of pain grille, pencil lead, earth notes, spice box, violets, and assorted black fruits. On the palate it is dense, ripe, full-bodied, and structured. Still a bit tightly wound, it will reveal its full potential with another 5-7 years of cellaring. It will provide much pleasure from 2015 to 2026 at the least. (RP 96) 2007 - Galitzine Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon contains 1% Petit Verdot. It offers up a splendid bouquet of toasty new oak, earth notes, espresso, incense, blackberry, and plum. A bit more structured than the Palengat cuvée, it is slightly denser, layered, and intense. This very lengthy effort will benefit from 5-7 years of cellaring and will offer a drinking window extending from 2015 to 2037. (RP 97) Donated by: Lydie Brown and Paul de Janosi

ONE MAGNUM LOUIS ROEDERER BRUT PREMIERE NV Roederer's NV Brut Premier is a classic and blends about 40% Pinot Noir (from Bouzy and Ambonnay), with 20-25% Meunier (whose share is declining in this blend) and Chardonnay. Two-thirds of the grapes come from estate vineyards, one-third is purchased. (Mind you that all the other Roederer cuvées are sourced exclusively form their own vineyards!) The newest release of the Premier is based on 75% 2009 and 25% reserve wines, which are, since 1996, single vintage wines aged in large oak casks between 6,000 and 10,000 liters. Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon holds 160 vats of reserve wines that are stored blank, so without lees, which otherwise would dominate the taste, says Lécaillon. "I don't like the reductive yeast flavors. Instead I am searching for a slightly oxidative and oaky style in my reserve wine." Lécaillon's youngest Premier did not undergo malolactic fermentation. The wine opens very bright, precise and refined, with toasty and white chocolate flavors. Absolutely delicate and elegant on the palate, this is a light, silky textured and remarkably finesse-full Champagne that is fresh on the palate, thanks to its structure and slightly oaky flavors. Excellent. (RP 90) Donated by: Rosemary and Martin King

AUSTRALIAN SPLENDOR: 6 BOTTLES SHINAS ESTATE EXECUTIONER 2008 ‘Executioner’ is the Judge’s take on a ‘reserve’ wine. The first vintage was gone before we knew it. The 2008 appears to be around for a few days longer than the 2007. This is power, pure power. A wine of awesome splendor that is sure to please the palates of even the most discerning consumer. This is made up of the oldest Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon plantings on the original vineyard. Unlike the other wines from Shinas Estate, this wine is finished with a cork and in a much heavier bottle. Saturated ruby. A complex, perfumed bouquet evokes red- and blackcurrant, cherry-vanilla, pipe tobacco and candied flowers. Juicy and precise on entry, then broader in the middle, offering deeply pitched dark fruit flavors and notes of violet and black cardamom. Turns spicier on the finish, which clings with excellent tenacity and length. 55% Shiraz - 43% Cabernet Sauvignon - 2% Viognier. (Vine Street Imports review) Donated by: Vine Street Imports

A rich, powerful, utterly explosive wine, the 2008 emerges with black cherries, tar, smoke, graphite and scorched earth. The style is jammy, powerful and built on intensity, but at the same time beautifully balanced. (AG 94) Donated by: Friends of PAFA

Every glass of this bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée is the fruit of more than 20 years of patience and crafting. In this early harvest year aromas were more impressive than taste. Thus the reserve wines lend the complexity, roundness, body and length which were missing. Blending many vintages gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, incredible generosity and an absolute elegance that are impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. • LOT 10 • STUDY FOR PRESERVATION OF THE SPIRIT 15X24, OIL ON BOARD, 2012 Donated by Vincent Desiderio, PAFA Alumnus and Senior Critic at PAFA
VALUE: $15,000 CATALOGUE: VINCENT DESIDERIO:PAINTINGS 1975-2005
Vincent Desiderio (b. 1955) is an American Realist Painter. A native Philadelphian and PAFA graduate, he is Senior Critic at PAFA, and at the New York Academy of Art. His paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe, and are part of the permanent collections at many museums including PAFA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, MFA (Boston) and at Galerie Sammlung Ludwig (Germany). "Preservation of the Spirit" by Vincent Desiderio was commissioned by the Abraham Lincoln Foundation in honor of the Union League's 150th Anniversary. The painting’s main focus is not Lincoln himself, but a representation of Lincoln in the form of a white, rider-less horse, stirrup facing backwards, the manner in which Lincoln’s horse appeared during his funeral procession in April 1865. Marching across the landscape are members of the military from the Civil War to modern times. They are joined by founding members of the Union League including George Boker and John Hare as well as other historic members and more contemporary, representative members.
• LOT 11 • MASSETO MADNESS
Donated by: Zachys and Jamie Pollack
VALUE: $5,000 JAMIE POLLACK, MANAGING DIRECTOR FOR THE AMERICAS OF ZACHYS WINE AUCTIONS, AND AXEL HEINZ, WINEMAKER OF MASSETO, ARE DELIGHTED TO OFFER 2 SEATS TO A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME MASSETO DINNER AT MICHELIN TWO-STAR JUNGSIK ON DECEMBER 2 IN MANHATTAN.
Masseto is sometimes lovingly referred to as "the Pétrus of Italy"-a reference not only to its 100% Merlot composition, but its price and rarity as well. But, the fact is, Masseto is a star in its own right, without comparison. From a minuscule 7 hectare plot in Tuscany, a single bottle of Masseto is a rare thing-the opportunity to taste a full vertical almost unheard of. The critics agree: the 2006 is a 100-point wine from Robert Parker, and it's rare that a vintage falls below 95 points. This dinner is at TriBeCa's Jungsik, a restaurant the Michelin Guide called, "Cool, chic, and completely urbane. The epitome of contemporary elegance." Chef Jung Sik Yim is an alumnus of the Culinary Institute of New York, and has worked at Aquavit and Bouley. At his restaurants in Seoul and New York, he is known for "taking traditional ingredients and serving them in an ultramodern way." His Seoul outpost was ranked #10 from "The World's 50 Best Restaurants" Asia review. Jungsik's cuisine is a blending of old and new, in complete elegance-much like the wines of Masseto. The wines to be served with dinner are Masseto 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2013 all of which are from a consignment in Zachys December 2&3 auction in New York City or brought to the dinner by guest Axel Heinz, winemaker of Masseto. Then, you and a guest are invited to join Zachys for "The Holiday Auction" the next day, Saturday, December 3 to see the collection of Masseto go under the auction block. Enjoy a fabulous lunch at Smith & Wollensky during the auction and drink more wines from many superlative collections. Wines poured at a recent auction included 1995 Cheval Blanc, 1999 Salon and 1982 Pétrus, all from large format!

Made from 20% Roussanne (aged in barrel), 30% Clairette, 30% Grenache Blanc and the rest other white varieties, it gives up great aromas of quince, almond paste and white currants that are carried by a salty minerality that keeps you coming back to the glass. Medium-bodied, textured and rich, this nicely balanced, classy white should drink nicely for 2-3 years. Drink now-2017. (WA 92) NV Xavier Vins Reserve Châteauneuf du Pape VII/IX/X While I reviewed this NV Châteauneuf du Pape La Reserve VII IX X (a blend from the 2007, 2009 and 2010 vintages) last year, I was able to taste it again this go around, and it still blew me away. Fabulously full-bodied and decadent, with loads of lavender, incense, black raspberry and cured-meat nuances, it’s still youthful and vibrant, with notable freshness and purity. Enjoy this brilliant wine through 2028. (WA 96) Janasse Châteauneuf du Pape Vielle Vigne 2009 Made from a blend of 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, and 5% Syrah, the dense purplecolored 2009 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes achieved 15.5% natural alcohol. A candidate for the wine of the vintage in this appellation, it offers abundant notes of blackberries, boysenberries, truffles and incense as well as a layered, multidimensional personality and an exceptionally long finish. This is a brilliant wine to drink over the next two decades. (WA 95-97) Pierre Usseglio Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée de Mon Aïeul 2009 Another wine that got better and better over the evening was the 2009 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée de Mon Aieul. I've drunk through my fair share of bottles of this over the past few years. It has never shut down and has always shown well. A ripe, forward and sexy wine, it has lots of kirsch, garrigue, exotic spice and floral notes to go with a ripe, concentrated feel on the palate. It certainly has the vintage's Provencal character and is an exuberant, hedonistic Grenache to enjoy over the coming 10-12 years. (WA 95)
• 48 •
Pegau Châteauneuf du Page Réservée 2010 Looking at the 2010s and a brilliant vintage for Laurence, the 2010 Châteauneuf du Pape offers up classic Pegau aromas and flavors of ripe dark fruits, garrigue, cured meats, tobacco leaf, saddle leather and hints of game. Full-bodied and beautifully concentrated, it offers a seamless, layered profile on the palate with thrilling mid-palate depth, sweet, yet substantial tannin, and a blockbuster finish that stays fresh and beautifully focused. Quite polished by this estates standards, it nevertheless screams southern France and I doubt it’s possible to have too much of this beauty in the cellar. It will absolutely thrill over the coming 2-3 decades. Drink 2016-2030. (WA 98) Santa Duc Selections Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues 2010 There are 1,200 cases of the sensational 2010 Gigondas Prestige des Hautes Garrigues. Its inky/purple color is accompanied by glorious aromas of crème de cassis, kirsch, blackberries and a cornucopia of roasted herb, meat and licorice smells. It possesses fabulous intensity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and a tremendously long finish that lasts 40+ seconds. This beauty should drink well for two decades. (WA 97) Château de Fargues Sauternes 2005 Tasted blind at the 10-Year On Tasting in Sauternes. The 2005 Château de Fargues has a rich and intense bouquet with layers of honey, dried peach, beeswax and acacia that soar from the glass. The palate is powerful and authoritative: intense botrytis-rich honeyed fruit with compelling mineralité underneath. It fans out in glorious fashion – a stunning de Fargues that is now beginning to show its talents. As I remarked a couple of years ago, just afford it a couple more years so that it can fully absorb the vestiges of oak. (WA 95) Francois Raveneau 1e Cru Forêt Chablis 2006 Pale yellow. Exotic aromas of ripe peach and acacia flower. Sweet, full and creamy-rich, with broad flavors of peach and spices. Not a particularly gripping or classic style of Chablis but boasts excellent length. (ST 89) Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2012 The cherry, licorice, sandalwood and mineral notes are elegantly displayed in this rich, harmonious red. Flows almost seamlessly now, with a chalky feel on the long finish the only trace of youthfulness. Fine length. Best from 2020 through 2035 (WS 94) Lucien Le Moine Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru 2005 (bottled in March of '07) Very fresh aromas of cold steel and menthol; distinctly medicinal in the context of the year. Then wonderfully full but with superb energy, combining flavors of lemon, lime, ginger and crushed rock. The minerality here is almost painful. A compellingly taut wine with great palate-staining length and cut. (ST 95) La Pousse d’Or Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2009 The 2009 Corton Clos du Roi reveals superb aromatic complexity and delineation, with expressive floral scents that are woven into the fruit. This is intense and powerful, but also marvelously elegant. It is a wine for those who can afford to be patient. The higher altitude of this site helped preserve a measure of freshness, which was quite welcome in 2009. (AG 95) Lucien Le Moine Mazi-Chambertin Grand Cru 2003 Wonderfully complex, perfumed nose combines raspberry, flowers, minerals, brown spices and leather. Sweet and pure but quite closed in the mouth, with reticent but precise flavors of spicy red berries and minerals. Very long and perfumed on the back end, with tannins buried in fruit and spice. This is the highest of these 2003s in volatile acidity, at 0.72%. From fruit harvested on September 2, according to Saouma. (ST 91-94)

Deep purple, the aromas are other-worldly with truffle, tar, graphite, kirsch, and wild blueberry among the array of scents leaping from the glass. Flamboyant and opulent, the wine has remarkable richness and depth of flavor leading to a 60-second finish. Drink this hedonistic effort over the next 10-12 years. (RP 98) Clos Mogador, Priorat, Spain 2004 Clos Mogador is produced by the esteemed Rene Barbier who has hit homeruns in both 2003 and 2004. The 2004 Clos Mogador has a more saturated purple color than the 2003 as well as a more expressive perfume of mocha, coffee, and flowers (violets) in addition to toasty oak, earth, and blue and black fruits. More extracted and backward than the 2003, it demands a decade of cellaring and should drink well for an additional 20 years. The 2004 is a tour de force. (RP 96) Numanthia “Numanthia”, Toro, Spain 2003 The 2003 Numanthia was fashioned from yields of one ton of fruit per acre (from a clone of Tempranillo that often has the highest polyphenols of any Tempranillo clone). This cuvée is made from 70- to 100-year-old vines planted at a 2,300 foot elevation, which no doubt accounts for the freshness in this massively rich, intense red. A vivid, intense nose of espresso roast, pain grille, sweet black cherries, and crème de cassis is followed by a full-bodied, intensely-concentrated, rich, well-delineated, moderately structured, pure red that can be drunk young or cellared for a decade. (RP 96) Numanthia “Termanthia”, Toro, Spain 2003 The bouquet on the Termanthia 2003 is gentle, approachable and perhaps a little “flat,” especially when compared to the previous vintage. In some ways, it is reminiscent of some Right Bank Bordeaux of that same year. The palate is rich and full-bodied with eucalyptus-tinged red berry fruit, sage, cloves and white pepper. It exhibits better freshness and balance than the aromatics suggest and is probably superior to a lot of Right Banks in this vintage. Though the 2002 demonstrates more vitality, the 2003 appears to be maturing well, even if the palate is leaving the aromatics behind. Drink now-2018. (RP 96) Mas Romani “La Basseta”, Priorat, Spain 2004 The 2004 La Basseta is 50% old-vine Carinena, 40% Grenache, 5% Merlot, and 5% Syrah aged for 15 months in French oak, 50% new. Dark ruby/purple, the wine has a spectacular perfume of mineral, scorched earth, violets, lavender, kirsch, and blueberry pie. Full-bodied, the wine is opulent with a velvety texture, layered flavors, a beautiful integration of oak, tannin, and acidity, and a welldelineated, long finish. Drink this pleasure-filled wine over the next 10-12 years. (RP 96)
• 50 •
Pintia, Toro, Spain 2004 There is an air of confidence about the bouquet on the 2004 Pintia, with scents of dark cherry, Indian ink, wild strawberry and a touch of raspberry preserve, all with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet core of red berry fruit. The tannins are strong and quite robust, although it is counterbalanced by plenty of fresh red fruit mingling with dried herbs, white pepper and a touch of sage. There is a touch of astringency on the finish, but otherwise this powerful Pintia should age over several more years. (RP 94) Mauro Terreus “Paraje de Cueva Baja”, Ribera Del Duero, Spain 2003 The 2003 Terreus is sourced from a single vineyard and produced only in top vintages. Purple/black in color, it offers a superb perfume of smoky oak, pencil lead, mineral, spice box, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent, thick, and layered, it has gobs of spicy, ripe black fruits, and licorice and espresso notes which emerge on the palate. The wine is beautifully balanced and very lengthy. It will reward extended cellaring and drink well through 2030. (RP 96) Rotllan Torra “Tirant”, Priorat, Spain 2003 The 2003 Tirant is a similar blend as the Amadis. Fermented in foudre and aged in French oak for 12 months, it is a more refined version of the Amadis with more complexity and elegance, but nevertheless still a beast of a wine. The purple/black color is followed by aromas of melting tar, blueberries, blackberries, and a touch of vanillin. The wine is dense and rich with layers of flavor, the tannin well hidden by the fruit. Give this bad boy another 4-6 years of cellaring and drink it for 15 years thereafter. (RP 96) El Nido “Clio”, Jumilla, Spain 2004 The consulting winemaker at Bodegas El Nido is Chris Ringland of Barossa Valley fame. The 2004 Clio is 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 70% Monastrell (from 63-year-old vines) which received malolactic fermentation in new oak followed by 26 months of aging in new French and American barriques. A glass-coating opaque purple, it exhibits a sensational nose of earth, mushroom, leather, blueberry, and blackberry jam. On the palate the wine is supple-textured, complex, with vibrant flavors of spicy blue and black fruits and a big-time WOW factor. This is a totally hedonistic effort with exceptional length and balance. It is remarkably light on its feet for such a powerful wine. (RP 97) Alion, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2004 Bodegas Alion was started by the renowned estate of Vega Sicilia in 1991. Grapes are sourced from vineyards next to the winery and from Vega Sicilia’s own vineyards at Valbuena. Eighteen hectares of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) form the actual Alion estate. The 2004 Alion is inky purple-colored with an alluring perfume of toasty oak, lavender, violets, mineral, blackberry, and blueberry compote. This is followed by a full-bodied, rich, opulent, wine with incipient complexity, and notes of licorice, mocha, and espresso emerging on the palate. The lengthy finish is pure and persistent. Give it 3-5 years in the cellar and drink it through 2025. (RP 96) Celler Cal Pla Mas d’en Compte Planots, Priorat, Spain 2004 The 2004 Mas d’En Compte Planots is 50% Garnacha and 50% Carinena from 100+-year-old vines sourced from a single vineyard. The wine was aged for 16 months in new French oak. Inky purple, the wine has an extraordinary bouquet of damp earth, truffle, crème de cassis, and kirsch. Thick and opulent on the palate, this powerful effort is a pure pleasure machine. Already easyto-drink, the wine has a well-concealed structure and superb balance. It should drink well for the next 10-12 years. (RP 97) El Nido “El Nido”, Jumilla, Spain 2003 The inky purple 2003 El Nido, which comes from 26-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon vines (70%) and 61-year-old Mourvedre (30%), was aged 26 months in new French and American oak barrels. It exhibits leathery, crème de cassis, and pain grille characteristics, additional tannin and body, and a formidable palate. A wine of extraordinary extract and richness, it will be a target for old timers and reactionaries who will feel it is too internationally styled, but it is an eye-opening wine from an area better known for large cooperatives and mediocre quality. It should evolve for 15 or more years. (RP 97)

Just a bit lean on the palate, it has some elegance, savory flavors, and adequate balance. Drink it over the next 10 years. (RP 91) Fontanafredda “La Rosa” Barolo 2008 Fine harmony and sweet cherry and berry flavors are the hallmarks of this rich Barolo. Licorice, spice and tobacco flavors add depth as it stays focused and persistent through the finish. The tannins are ripe and well-integrated. Best from 2015 through 2033. 1,500 cases made. (WS 95) Finca Villacreces Nebro, Ribera Del Duero, Castilla Leon, Spain 2004 A modern red, with structure and concentration. Ripe blackberry and currant flavors are supported by plenty of chocolate oak and firm, well-integrated tannins. Best after 2007. (RP 93)

Chave Hermitage Blanc 2005 The 2005 Hermitage blanc is an amazing effort that defines the classic style of white Hermitage. It offers hints of marzipan, roasted hazelnuts, quince, licorice, honeysuckle, citrus oil, and wet stones. It is a superbly concentrated and powerful wine. It should drink well for 30+ years. (RP 96) Close des Pape Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2005 #1 in Top 100 Wines of 2007 & Collectibles designation** Really tight now, but packed with dark fig, currant, espresso, licorice and chocolate notes. Superfleshy but seriously structured, there's layer after layer of sweet spice, fruit and minerality pumping through the finish, with lots of latent depth and power. Far more backward than the 2003 or 2004 on release, but since this red typically puts on weight as it ages, it should be a monster--à la the 1990—when it reaches its peak. (WS 98) Cote Bonneville DuBrul Vineyard 2007 The Shiels’ flagship 2007 DuBrul Vineyard Cote Bonneville is 57% Cabernet Sauvignon and 43% Merlot. Utterly invigorating in a way one seldom encounters from a Cabernet-based red. (WA 96) Massolino Barolo Serralunga d' Alba 2009 The 2009 Barolo Margheria, however, moves us over to the Serralunga d’Alba township where power and structure are the name of the game. This wine shows big bones with firmly rooted tannins and a bold, fleshy quality of fruit. Black currant, chopped mint and licorice are woven tightly within the fabric of the wine. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. (RP 93) Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2010 Sesti's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine of real class and personality. In fact, the 2010 is one of the best wines I have tasted from this estate in Sant'Angelo in Colle. Iron, sweet red cherries, wild flowers and earthiness are some of the many notes that inform a juicy, plump Brunello that already drinks well. The 2010 is quite forward and fruit-driven, but there is good underlying complexity as well as enough acidity to ensure a decade-plus of fine drinking. My only quibble is that the aromatics could be a little more focused, but that is a relatively small critique for a wine that delivers this much pleasure. (AG 94) Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Annata 2010 The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is a real knock-out. Rose petals, mint, sweet spices and flowers are some of the first notes that open up in the glass. Almost indescribably beautiful, the 2010 is a classic, austere Biondi Santi Brunello built to age. Although the 2010 is going to require considerable patience, its pedigree is quite apparent today. The 2010 constantly changes in the glass, revealing different shades of its multi-faceted personality, while the long, saline-infused finish is a thing of real beauty. (AG 96) Brunello di Montalcino Poggio di Sotto 2010 The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino opens slowly and gracefully before it shows its full potential. This slow moving bouquet is a beautiful quality that is shared by many of the best wines from this stellar vintage. Once it gets started, this Brunello offers wild berry, graphite, tar and balsam herb tones that are direct and focused. This wine is steady and sure. It also reveals balanced acidity that adds to the length and the polished feel that this wine majestically projects. This vintage from Poggio di Sotto should evolve at a slow pace for the next 10-15 years. (RP 95+) Château Leoville Poyferre 2010 The wine out distances both Leoville Las Cases and Leoville Barton, but all three of them are compelling efforts. Full-bodied, dense purple in color, with floral notes intermixed with blackberries, cassis, graphite and spring flowers, this full-bodied, legendary effort is long and opulent, with wonderfully abundant yet sweet tannin, a skyscraper-like mid-palate and a thrilling, nearly oneminute finish. This spectacular effort from Poyferre that should drink well for 30+ years. (RP 98)

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso 2010 Beautiful and delicate from the start, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna di Pianrosso impresses for its depth and balance. The wine sees one more year of oak cask aging compared to the base Brunello and you can definitely sense the extra spice on the nose. Those delicate balsam notes of root beer, ginger and rosemary oil are still prominently on display. Rich spice, leather and tar are followed by dark fruit, prune, blackberry and cassis. The finish is graceful and silky, but its length remains impressive. This is a terrific effort that promises a steady evolution ahead. (RP 97) Continuum Proprietary Red 2011 Another strong effort by Tim Mondavi from this relatively new project on Pritchard Hill, the 2011 Continuum’s final blend was 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot, 11% Cabernet Franc and 2% Merlot. Harvested late, between October 17 and November 3, it spent 19 months in 85% new French oak. The wine’s impressive deep ruby/plum/purple color is followed by notes of blackcurrants, black cherries and spring flowers. Like most 2011s, it has evolved early, but it is a medium to full-bodied beauty that represents one of the most successful wines of the vintage. Drink it now and over the next 12-16 years. (RP 92) O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 Betty O’Shaughnessy and her winemaker, Sean Capiaux, have fashioned a 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain (82% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot) that is soft, round, juicy and succulent. Its deep ruby/purple color is followed by a wine with velvety tannins, and lots of mulberry, blueberry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with a hint of wet rocks. This delicious, fruit-forward, supple-textured 2011 can be consumed over the next decade. (RP 90) Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Right Bank 2012 The 2012 Right Bank is dark, juicy and expressive, with plenty of sweet dark cherry, rose petal, mocha, spice and chocolate notes. Although quite open-knit and ripe today, the 2012 has enough depth to drink well for at least another handful of years. The 2012 has put on quite a bit of weight over the last twelve months. Today, it is deep and resonant throughout, with the radiance of the vintage very much on display. (AG 93) Aubert Larry Hyde & Sons Carneros Chardonnay 2012 This unfolds slowly, with a beam of lemon-lime citrus, green apple and honeysuckle flavors, and should reward short-term cellaring, showing hints of vanilla and cream on the finish. The greenest of the Auberts. Drink now through 2020. 875 cases made. (WS 92) Aubert "Ritchie Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 2013 The 2013 Chardonnay Ritchie Vineyard is translucent and weightless, yet also magnificent in its depth. Graphite, slate, smoke, incense, lemon and white peach emerge from the glass, but only with great reluctance. The Ritchie is the most reticent wine in this range, but it is in many ways the most intriguing. Intensely mineral and nuanced, the 2013 Ritchie will thrill those lucky enough to own it for another decade-plus. I can't wait to see how this develops in bottle. The 2013 was done in 100% new oak, yet there is virtually no trace of oak at all. (RP 96) Tenuta dell Ornellaia 2013 A dark and inky red, featuring violet, black currant, cedar, sandalwood and iron aromas and flavors. Nonetheless, this comes across as elegant, even as the tannins prove formidable on the finish. A terrific young wine in the making. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2017 through 2035. (WS 96)

• LOT 19 • BEST OF BORDEAUX: ALL 100 POINTS! Donated by: Elliot Clark
VALUE: $4,000 Château Haut-Brion 2010 (RP 100) Château Lafite Rothschild 2010 (WE 100) Château Margaux 2010 (RP 100) Château Pontet-Canet 2009 (RP 100) Château 2010 Haut-Brion: As for the 2010 Haut-Brion, it does not have the power of Latour’s 2010 or the intense lead pencil shavings and chocolaty component of Lafite-Rothschild, but it is extraordinary, perfect wine. It has a slightly lower pH than the 2009 (3.7 versus the 2009's 3.8), and even higher alcohol than the 2009 (14.6%). The wine is ethereal. From its dense purple color to its incredibly subtle but striking aromatics that build incrementally, offering up a spectacular smorgasbord of aromas ranging from charcoal and camphor to black currant and blueberry liqueur and spring flowers, this wine’s finesse, elegant yet noble power and authority come through in a compelling fashion. It is full-bodied, but that’s only apparent in the aftertaste, as the wine seems to float across the palate with remarkable sweetness, harmony, and the integration of all its component parts – alcohol, tannin, acidity, wood, etc. This prodigious Haut-Brion is hard to compare to another vintage, at least right now, but it should have 50 to 75 years of aging potential. Anticipated maturity: 2022-2065+. (RP 100) Château Lafite Rothschild 2010: Almost black in color, this stunning wine is gorgeous, rich and dense. It's grand and powerful, with a strong sense of its own importance. The beautiful tannins and the fragrant black currant fruits are palpable. It's a great wine, with huge potential. (WS 100) Château Margaux 2010: This was phenomenal from barrel and remains so. The aromas are spellbinding. It smells like a bouquet of pink roses and then goes to currants, berries and citrus. Full body, with wonderfully refined tannins. It starts discretely and then grows to different levels and dimensions like a slow but big high tide. The texture is so beautiful. Try it in 2020 or beyond. (RP 100) Château Pontet-Canet 2009: An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac is the quintessential Pontet Canet from proprietor Alfred Tesseron, who continues to reduce yields and farms his vineyards biodynamically – a rarity in Bordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, crème de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. This cuvée should shut down in the cellar and re-open in a decade or more. Anticipated maturity: 2025-2075. (RP 100)

The wine shows some dry tannin in the finish that may ultimately prove worrisome given the less-than-massive style of this vintage. Nevertheless, there is still a lot to like in this wine, which is very pure, ripe, and medium to fullbodied. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2016. (RP 92) The nearly perfect 1997 Greenock Creek Shiraz Roennfeldt Road boasts a dense opaque purple color in addition to celestial aromas of blackberry liqueur, melted road tar, truffles, and earth. It is full-bodied, with massive layers of fruit and glycerin that cascade over the palate in a seamless, beautifully balanced fashion, and a 55-second finish. This enormous wine is fabulously young with its entire future ahead of it. It should hit its peak in 3-4 years, and last for two decades. (RP 98) The 1998 Run Rig is a phenomenal wine. An inky/blue/purple color is followed by an incredibly intoxicating, endearing bouquet of peaches, honeysuckle, blackberries, and spring flowers, fullbodied, concentrated flavors that show slightly more depth and length than the 1997, and more velvety tannins than the 1996. This prodigious offering should continue to evolve for another decade or more. (RP 99) Parker Coonwarra Estate Terra Rossa 1998 "Readers should keep an eye out for the 1998 Terra Rossa First Growth after its release later this year. Its dense purple color is followed by extraordinarily sweet fruit, intense glycerin, and a full-bodied, concentrated mouth-feel. The purity, high extract, and uncanny symmetry is breathtaking. Perhaps the finest Terra Rossa First Growth yet produced, it should drink well for two decades or more." RP 97) Rolf Binder/Veritas Hanisch Shiraz 1999: a terrific nose of jammy black fruits intermixed with licorice, new saddle leather, and pepper. Full-bodied and seamless, with exceptional concentration and purity, this large-scaled yet well-balanced wine. (RP 92) Noon Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 1999: "The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve could easily be called a Pauillac from Australia. Dense ruby/purple, a classic Cabernet nose of cedar wood, smoke, cassis, mineral, lead pencil, and new oak soars from the glass. In the mouth, it is fullbodied, with fabulous concentration and multi-layered texture, high levels of glycerin, and a seamless, concentrated, long finish with well-integrated tannin, acidity, and alcohol. VALUE: $2,000 Kistler Vineyard Sonoma Coast Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir A steely, tightly-knit offering that requires some introspection as well as more bottle age is the 2008 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard. Unbuttered popcorn, crisp pear, white peach and steely, wet rock-like characteristics suggest lots of minerality in this wine that plays it close to the vest. It needs plenty of coaxing and will benefit from another 1-2 years of bottle age. It should drink well for a decade. (RP 93+) The 2009 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard, on the other hand, bursts onto the palate with endless layers of white peaches, apricots and white flowers. The deep texture turns delicate and haunting on the finish. There is an exotic, floral note that is very much unique to this bottling that Steve Kistler ascribes to the Mt. Eden and Wente selections planted on this site. This is a marvelously complete, stunning wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. (AG 96) 2010 Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard : Bright, green-tinged gold. Seductive, highly perfumed aromas of dried pear, lemon pith and white flowers, with iodine and honey nuances adding depth. Smooth and broad on entry, then brighter in the mid-palate, offering vibrant, mineralaccented orchard fruit and bitter citrus flavors and a note of sweet butter. Finishes sappy and extremely long, with resonating mineral and spice notes. Great energy and power. (ST 94) The 2008 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard exhibits lots of wild berry fruit intermixed with graphite, herb and spring flower notes in its medium-bodied, luscious style. The 2008 is more open-knit and richer than the 2009 from this site. (RP 93) The 2009 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard bursts from the glass with an exotic array of sweet red fruit, flowers, licorice and spices. It is a dazzling, totally beguiling wine that impresses for its sheer grace and classiness. A subtle yet precise saline-infused finish leaves a lasting impression. This is the most approachable and complete of the 2009 Kistler Pinots. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2021. (RP 95) Ash, game, tar, licorice, incense and dark cherries are some of the notes that emerge from the 2010 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard. A pretty, soft, understated wine, the 2010 also has a hint of wildness running through it. (RP 93)

wimpish wine at 14.6% alcohol, but sadly, there are only 290 cases of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon made from 25-30 year old vines. Anticipated maturity: now-2020." (RP 94) The 2001 Shiraz Ares (100% Barossa Valley Shiraz) was previewed last year from barrel, and is even better from bottle. Its stunning nose of subtle new oak interwoven with blackberry liqueur and acacia flowers is followed by a full-bodied, rich, concentrated Shiraz with tremendous power, symmetry, and a deep, thick, long finish. Despite its large size, it is an elegant, tremendously rich, long beauty with at least 10-15 years of aging ahead of it. (RP 92) The 2001 Shiraz Apricot Block represents a spectacular example of Barossa Shiraz. Made from 10-year-old vines cropped at 1-1.5 tons per acre, it is a dense, full-bodied Shiraz possessing fabulous intensity, great purity, and a multi-tiered, skyscraper-like mid-palate. It can be drunk young or cellared through 2018-2020. (RP 99) Even bigger than the Greenock Block, but revealing more complexity as well as elegance is the stunning 2002 Shiraz Coach House, which sees 10% new American oak. Aromas and flavors of blackberries, plums, figs, crème de cassis, graphite, smoky new oak, bacon fat, and prunes are present in this dense, full-bodied effort. Monstrous in the mouth, with no hard edges, this is the type of wine that seemingly only Australia is capable of producing (RP 97) The 2003 Les Amis is a 300-case cuvée of 100% Grenache from a vineyard planted in 1901. I have had a lot of fun serving the 2002 blind to guests, and for my taste, this cuvée is the reference point for old vine Grenache produced in Australia. It is extraordinarily elegant for a wine of such power, richness, and intensity. Amazingly delineated, with a dense ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeously sweet nose of smoke, spice box, black cherry liqueur, crème de cassis, licorice, and lavender, it offers impressive balance, purity, opulence, and persistence. This phenomenal wine is both powerful and refreshingly elegant. A magnificent achievement for Torbreck, it should drink well for 15+ years. (RP 98) The 2005 Shiraz “Clos Otto” comes from a single block of estate vineyard. It was aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak. It has a riveting nose of toasty oak, scorched earth, spice box, pepper, game, blueberry, and blackberry. Intensely flavored, ripe and sweet, it has wellconcealed tannins, outstanding balance, and a very long finish. Give it 6-8 years in the cellar and drink it through 2035. (RP 94) The Seven Acres Shiraz was also aged for 28 months in seasoned American oak hogsheads. Tar, mineral, earth notes, smoked meat, and blueberry scents jump from the glass of this fullbodied but restrained (relatively speaking) Shiraz. On the palate it is a bit more austere than its siblings with a bit more structure and apparent acidity. As a result, it will require longer cellaring and should offer prime drinking from 2015 to 2030. (RP 96)
