ChIlDREN’S bOOK IllUSTRATION WITh DAVID WIESNER Open to all Levels Explore the visual language of picture books in this hands-on illustration workshop with Caldecott Medal-winning book creator, David Wiesner. Picture books are about how images work together, relate to each other, and convey information to create a whole that is greater than the individual elements. Learn how images move the reader through the book and create a compelling visual rhythm; how information and emotion are transmitted through the size, shape and number of images; and how design affects not only the look of the book, but the story elements as well. Drawing will be the primary focus of the class; a choice of stories will be available, but students may bring their own – original or public domain. Comics are a kind of alchemy, blending text and images on the page to tell stories that make powerful impressions. Words and pictures play off of each other and swap roles in ways that provide the author a powerful range of expression. Learn how to master the basics of this rich visual language through a series of short exercises and slideshows. Investigate the principles of panel-to-panel storytelling, view examples of page and book design, and survey the traditional tools of the trade: India ink, pens and brushes, and bristol board. The human body is one of the most fascinating and inspiring subjects an artist can depict, but its complexity can make it intimidating. Join Roberto Osti, artist, teacher and author of Basic Human Anatomy: An Essential Visual Guide to gain the confidence to understand and enjoy drawing the beautiful forms of the figure. Study the human form from a structural point of view: basic landmarks, essential volumes, and proportions and proportional relationships of body and its segments. Then focus on the main muscle groups and the aesthetic aspects they produce in the body. Each day will be divided into a lecture and then drawing from the model, with individual assistance from Mr. Osti. Students will work in drawing media from the still life, PAFA’s historic cast collection and the human figure/portrait to learn principles of composition, value, perspective, and drawing techniques. undergraduate Credit Courses meeting contact hour requirements (30 hours minimum, not including lunch breaks) are available for 1.0 or 1.5 undergraduate credits. If taken for credit, you may incur additional coursework, and will receive a course grade and appropriate credit that will appear on an official PAFA transcript, if requested (see below). Changes in credit status must be arranged through the CE office prior to the third class for courses that run 12 or more weeks or the second class for courses that run 10 weeks or fewer. No refunds can be issued for changes from credit to non-credit.

COURSE TUITION  AND fEES ■

30 contact hours: $395 non-credit; $525 for 1.0 undergraduate credit 36 contact hours: $495 non-credit; $625 for 1.0 undergraduate credit 45 contact hours: $595 non-credit; $950 for 1.5 undergraduate credits

Tuition varies for Short and Condensed Courses, Online Courses, High School Portfolio Preparation Courses, Workshops, Lectures, Seminars, and Master Classes. Please refer to individual descriptions.

Transcripts To request an official transcript, visit pafa.edu/ transcript to download a transcript request form.

Full payment is due at the time of registration. PAFA cannot prorate courses for late registration, withdrawals or missed classes.

For Pennsylvania & New Jersey K-12 Educators PAFA is approved to provide Pennsylvania Act 48 hours and New Jersey Department of Education Professional Development Credit for its courses and workshops. Courses and workshops are eligible for the number of contact hours for which they meet (excluding lunch breaks). Educators electing to receive PA Act 48 or NJ Professional Development Credit should notify the Continuing Education Programs office when registering. Please note, Pennsylvania educators must provide their 6-digit Professional Educator Identification Number.

Lab and Material Fees Please consult individual course descriptions for any applicable lab or materials fees. Late Fee Registrations received after 5 p.m. on their deadline date may be assessed a late fee of $25. Locker Rental Lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis for $25. Locker rental is not available for weekend workshops or Master Classes.

DISCOUNTS* Membership Discount PAFA Members at the Friend level and above receive a 10% tuition discount on all CE courses, workshops and Master Classes. Referral Discount If you are a current CE student and refer a first-time Continuing Education student, you both will receive a 10% tuition discount on one course or workshop within the current semester (excludes Master Classes). *Lab, materials and locker fees are not eligible for discount. SChOlARShIPS PAFA Continuing Education is pleased to present the “CE Community Scholarship” to assist students who demonstrate dedication to their art.
