The plein air workshop in Cape May with Joseph Sweeney was a wonderful experience for me. I enjoyed working with Joe and the other painters. Joe was always available throughout the weekend to provide advice and tips. Each painting session began with a demonstration to help us focus on the prominent features of the scene. He was very helpful to me personally as I worked in pastel, which is relatively new medium for me. I certainly hope to avail myself of future painting opportunities with Joe. FRANK HERRON CE Student since 2005

IN 609DW CHILDREN’S BOOK ILLUSTRATION WORKSHOP WITH DAVID WIESNER DRAWING/WATERCOLOR For Intermediate to Advanced Artists Explore the visual language of picture books in this hands-on illustration workshop with Caldecott Medal-winning book creator, David Wiesner. Picture books are about how images work together, relate to each other, and convey information to create a whole that is greater than the individual elements. Learn how images move the reader through the book; how to create a compelling visual rhythm; how information and emotion are transmitted through the size, shape and number of images; and how design affects not only the look of the book, but the story elements as well. Drawing will be the primary focus of the class; a choice of stories will be available, but students may bring their own – original or public domain.
SLIDE LECTURE WITH DAVID WIESNER Friday, November 13, 6 - 7:30 p.m. Hamilton Auditorium/ Historic Landmark Building FREE by RSVP to the CE office: 215-972-7632
Renowned picture book creator David Wiesner grew up in New Jersey and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he honed his passion for visual storytelling and learned to channel it into the medium of picture books, which he both authors and illustrates. Wiesner's books have become much-loved classics around the world. They have earned him three prestigious Caldecott Medals for Tuesday in 1992, The Three Pigs in 2002 and Flotsam in 2007; numerous awards (including additional Caldecott Honors); and have been translated into more than a dozen languages. This year, with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, he has published David Wiesner's Spot, a wordless, semi-narrative app that allows users to explore his telescoping, hand-painted but expertly digitized worlds. He currently lives and works in Philadelphia. Saturday and Sunday, November 14 & 15 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Room 1021/Samuel M.V. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS PAFA offers a variety of programs to help you meet your artistic goals. For more information, please contact the Office of Admissions at admissions@pafa.edu or 215-972-7625. POST-BACCALAUREATE CERTIFICATE IN GRADUATE STUDIES This is an individually designed, one-year program of study for those who wish to develop their artistic skills, further their formal education, and be competitive for admission to graduate degree programs. This studio-based program offers formal drawing and seminar classes as well as private and group critiques with an excellent faculty. CERTIFICATE PROGRAM At the heart of the PAFA’s educational programs is the Certificate program, a fouryear curriculum of intense studio education that offers four majors: painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and illustration (new for fall 2015). BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS PAFA offers two choices for students wishing to pursue an undergraduate degree program: the PAFA BFA and the Coordinated BFA with the University of Pennsylvania. PAFA BFA students study exclusively at PAFA, taking both studio arts and the liberal arts component offered by PAFA. Students also have the choice of enrolling in the Certificate Program and earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania. FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION STUDENTS CONSIDERING MATRICULATION INTO THE CERTIFICATE PROGRAM Select courses taken in the Continuing Education program may be evaluated for transfer into the Certificate program, based on satisfactory completion of coursework and a review of the student’s portfolio. If approved, a maximum of 15 credits may be accepted as transfer credits. For more information, contact the Office of Admissions at 215-972-7625 or via email at admissions@pafa.edu.
MASTER OF FINE ARTS PROGRAM This two-year, studio-based program allows fine artists to realize their creative potential while providing a solid intellectual and practical foundation for artistic expression. Students are encouraged to achieve independent aesthetic development through abroad variety of desired approaches. LOW-RESIDENCY MASTER OF FINE ARTS PROGRAM Similar to the traditional MFA, the LowResidency program focuses on independent studio work and is interdisciplinary in nature, however it does so with a combination of both on-site and off-site learning. The core of the program is three summer terms completed on the PAFA campus. These intensive, eight-week sessions include studio and seminar courses, regular studio visits, group critiques, and an outstanding roster of visiting artists. During the fall and spring terms, students are off-site and engage in a vital online community with virtual studios, critic meetings, and courses in art history, contemporary art, theory, writing and professional practices.
