WOODCUT WORKSHOP WITH DAN MILLER PRINTMAKING open to All leVels Don’t miss the opportunity to work with Dan Miller, a member of the PAFA faculty for over 50 years and a master of woodblock printing. Held in PAFA’s state-of-the art Print Shop, this workshop will begin with a printing demonstration and a slide lecture illustrating the vast historical variety within the woodcut experience. Studio activity will focus on designing an image, cutting the woodblock, and printing in blackand-white and color. DRAWING WORDS & PICTURES: FUNDAMENTALS OF COMICS STORYTELLING WITH MATT MADDEN ILLUSTRATION open to All leVels Comics is a kind of alchemy, blending words and images on the page to tell stories that make powerful impressions. Words and images play off of each other and swap roles in ways that give great power and expressive range to the author. Learn how to master the basics of this rich visual language through a series of short exercises and slideshows. Investigate the principles of panel-to-panel storytelling, view examples of page and book design, and survey the traditional tools of the trade: India ink, pens and brushes, and bristol board. Matt Madden (NYC 1968) is a cartoonist, teacher, and translator. His work includes 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style, his comics adaptation of Raymond Queneau’s Exercises in Style, as well as two comics textbooks written in collaboration with his wife, Jessica Abel. The couple were also series editors of The Best American Comics for six years. He recently moved to Philadelphia, after living in Angoulême, France, for four years.

PAINTING IN THE DARK WITH NEYSA GRASSI MIXED MEDIA ON PAPER open to All leVels Paint your way through the mystery and uncertainty of the art-making process through this intuitive, practical and empowering workshop with acclaimed artist and PAFA graduate faculty member, Neysa Grassi. Dispel the voices of criticism in your head, and learn to perceive doubt as a valid means of investigation rather than a destructive force. Work in gouache and mixed media on paper to discover the freedom that comes from making imagery without preconceived outcomes. Discussion of painting practices and critiques of students’ previous work will supplement studio activity. All instruction is presented on an artist-to-artist basis, whether participants are beginners or seasoned artists. MONOTYPE WORKSHOP WITH STUART SHILS PRINTMAKING open to interMeDiAte Artists oF All MeDiA Experience the joys and possibilities of monotype printmaking with an emphasis on color and abstraction in the shaping of the visual image. Through the monotype process, students will understand pictorial structure (design) and mood as the keys to visual coherence and graphic strength. Working from window views and in-studio drawings, students will employ graphic shorthand and visual memory to generate imagery that captures the essence of places and moments through color and form, exploring the intimate relationship between observation and abstract structure. Rather than enforcing Shils’ style, instruction will encourage artists to create prints that promote their personal voice and expression. PLEIN AIR PAINTING IN CAPE MAY, NEW JERSEY ALL MEDIA open to All leVels Join plein air painter Joe Sweeney for a painting retreat in beautiful Cape May. Experience small town hospitality while painting the landscape/seascape of Cape May, including Cape May Point, the Cove with sweeping vistas, Cape May Lighthouse, and Sunset Beach. If taken for credit, you may incur additional coursework, and will receive a course grade and appropriate credit that will appear on an official PAFA transcript, if requested.
