Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) Barbara Jordan Passenger Terminal

PROJECT DETAILS Size 680,000 Square Feet Services Provided Architecture / Interiors / Planning / Programming Type of Construction New Construction

Austin, Texas

The Barbara Jordan Passenger Terminal reflects Austin’s unique character, culture and heritage through its openness, use of local materials and iconography and relaxed, informal social character. The 680,000-square-foot, crescent-shaped terminal organization is simple and direct, providing easy orientation to the passenger and the public. Its plan minimizes walking distances from curbside to gates while maximizing the visibility of the large central marketplace adjacent to the gate areas. From this central space, the building opens onto the apron, planes and runways, as well as to the open countryside and big Texas skies beyond – combining this city’s love of nature and the outdoors with a connection to flight. Sustainable design concepts were employed throughout the terminal, including natural daylighting, which obviated the need for supplemental artificial lighting as much as possible. While exceeding the energy code requirements by more than the agreed target of 15%, the exterior envelope contains almost 40% clear glass. The low-energy insulating glass was used throughout the exterior envelope, and fritted glass was used at strategically determined areas to eliminate glare and lower heat gain into the facility. Passive energy shading devices were incorporated throughout the southern façade. Page was Architect of Record and provided architecture, interiors and mechanical and electrical engineering for the terminal, co-designed with Gensler Los Angeles.

Van Don Airport (VDO)

PROJECT DETAILS Size 60,000 Square Feet Services Provided Architecture / Planning / Programming Type of Construction New Construction

Quang Ninh, Vietnam

The Van Don Airport, located in the heart of the Van Don Economic Zone, represents a fantastic opportunity to create a memorable icon and raise the profile of Quang Ninh province as a significant Vietnamese tourist destination. This four-gate airport is designed to receive 2 million passengers per year in its first phase and nearly 5 million by the completion of its second phase in 2030. The concept for the design was to create a tectonic language driven by the structural columns on the facade of the building. As one approaches the airport by car, motorcycle or rail, the imposing structural elements provide a sculptural quality meant to provoke a sense of awe and pride from residents and visitors alike. The oversized columns will generate a powerful identity for the airport and designate the entry locations to access the building. Visually the sinuous sweeps and angular landscape create an interesting and dynamic language experienced once within the terminal building. The structure is designed to be easily expandable for phase two and as strong as a stand-alone building in the first phase.

Page prepared conceptual design studies to improve the overall operating efficiency of the airport’s central utility plant. The proposal’s cornerstone was the integration of a combined heat and power (CHP) unit. Though served from two separate substations, the airport is vulnerable to power outages following natural disasters. The CHP would accommodate the full operation of the central utility plant with the export of power to the terminals. Detailed analyses using several years of metered electric and thermal data were prepared to demonstrate the overall cost-effectiveness and value of the airport system.

Bata International Airport (BSG)

PROJECT DETAILS Size 28,780 Square Feet Services Provided Planning / Programming

Malabo, Ecuatorial Guinea

As the first major airport in the mainland part of the country, the International Equatorial Guinea Airport will be the major gateway for international visitors to the region. As such, the facility has been designed to create a sense of arrival for passengers and visitors. A formal promenade brings visitors from the parking area to arrive at the high-volume, light-filled entry hall. From there, they travel up over the airport support spaces and end up in the departure gate area, which takes advantage of its elevated location to frame views of the surrounding natural setting. The airport’s initial 28,780 square meter phase will support four gates, three of which are for international arrivals and departures. Future expansion will add four more additional gates to the facility. Due to the facility’s remote location, the design team has worked closely with the building contractor to simplify construction techniques and identified opportunities for pre-manufactured components to reduce the amount of necessary on-site construction.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) IT Building

PROJECT DETAILS Size 40,000 Square Feet Services Provided Architecture / Engineering / Interiors / Programming Type of Construction Expansion

Austin, Texas

The AUS IT Building expansion provides much-needed growth and increased reliability for mission-critical technology infrastructure required for the airport’s core functions – getting planes in the air and landing them safely and efficiently on the ground. This project provides security enhancements for ensuring continuous operations and mitigating risks to AUS operations, as well as a first-class facility for the AUS IT staff to help attract and retain highly-qualified personnel. The new facility quadruples the size of the existing building from 10,000 square feet to over 40,000 square feet to accommodate the current demand and anticipated growth for the next 20+ years. The building is organized to respond to these differing levels of protection, splitting the program functions into two separate parts: a very secure “bunker” for the critical communications functions and a more open, day-lit office building. The communications bunker serves as the nerve center of AUS. The internal layout of the bunker maintains all existing critical functions in their rightful places and puts all new functions into efficient alignment with the existing ones, all the while keeping flexibility for future growth in mind. All office spaces in the building have ample access to daylight. A generous band of glazing provides excellent views and daylight to the office spaces without over-lighting the screen-intensive work being done by the IT staff. A series of aluminum sun shades incorporated into the façade reduce glare in the workplace. At the northwest corner, the main break area is positioned adjacent to an outdoor break area, offering direct access to outdoor spaces. Dense plantings surrounding the ground level also help screen parking views and provide building occupants with a strong connection to nature. These amenities provide a welcome respite from work areas, facilitate low-stress environments and help AUS attract and retain high-performing staff to operate this critical facility.

When supporting architecture and engineering projects, our experience throughout design, construction and move-in proves that thoroughly exploring and clearly communicating the consensus project definition prior to design positions our entire Page team to develop optimal solutions at the greatest value to projects at every scale. BUILDING SCIENCES Page approaches sustainable design through the interdisciplinary lens of building sciences to create higher performing, healthier, more resilient buildings. As one of the first signatories of AIA 2030 Commitment, we are invested in leading the industry towards carbonneutral buildings and advocating for resilient solutions to help our clients prepare for the future. We believe that intention requires rigor and through our data driven and integrative process, we collaborate early and often to ensure designs are informed by our building performance analysis. With experience across a wide range of environmental certification systems, our multidisciplinary team is well qualified to provide a holistic and comprehensive approach to sustainable design

The exacting standards of our teams of professional engineers, architects and field technicians in service of our clients support delivery of construction quality. We perform Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing in accordance with NEBB standards. Page is an independent testing firm with absolutely no affiliation with manufacturers, factory representatives, vendors/ providers, contractors or installers of HVAC-related equipment and systems.
