#PAHTPeople
Welcome to InTouch magazine – your insight into the latest news and updates from across PAHT. It continues to be a challenging time, with an extremely high demand on our services across the hospital. Thank you for your hard work and commitment to provide high quality care for our patients or support those who provide care. Please remember to look out for yourselves and each other, as well as our patients. A wide variety of health and wellbeing support is available to you, with details on AlexNet and our staff health and wellbeing webpage: www.pah.nhs.uk/healthandwellbeing. We are pleased to have introduced our new Extranet, AlexNet, last month, with a variety of fantastic features including brand new workspaces for all teams and services; event and noticeboard listings; easy to locate policies and procedures; and your most frequently used pages populated on the home page. You can also access AlexNet from your phone or tablet, wherever you have an internet connection, as well as on your laptop or desktop PC. You can read more from p.3-p.4. This edition includes the latest on the Alex Learning, Education and Development Centre and the Alex Lounge, part of our commitment to support the development and health and wellbeing of our people. We also focus on the People Pulse survey – an opportunity for you to share your feedback and help us make our organisation a better place to work, and a better place to receive care. You can read about how the maternity team have been commended for their care during their reaccreditation as part of Unicef’s Baby Friendly Initiative, and an update on our focus on equality, diversity and inclusion. Additionally, please read the latest from our charity and how you can support us, together with our divisional update, this month from surgery. This magazine is for and about you, our #PAHTPeople – please contact the communications team if you would like to see your team featured, at paht.communications@ nhs.net. I hope you enjoy the read. People PulseSurvey survey: People Pulse Share your Share yourviews views Your feedback matters to us and helps us make our organisation a better place to work, and a better place to receive care. NHS England and Improvement introduced this regular survey last year, to help NHS organisations learn more about the experiences of our people. The survey takes place regularly between each annual staff survey. It supports the NHS People Promise, especially in relation to 'We each have a voice that counts'. We are using the People Pulse to regularly check in with you and help improve the support we provide as an organisation. The survey takes just five minutes to complete and allows you to tell us more about your experiences at work, including how motivated you feel and what other support would make the biggest difference to your experience at work at this time. By sharing your views, you will help us improve the support we provide to you. When is the survey open? The survey is open until Monday 31 January. We will let you know when the next survey period will start.
What you need to know •The survey offers full anonymity - it is accessed via a universal link, listed below (where you select The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust as your place of work. There are several demographic questions, which you can opt out of if preferred) •The survey replaces the quarterly 'Staff Friends and Family Test' you may be familiar with receiving in previous years
•The survey is quick to complete, designed to just take five minutes •Your feedback is available to us very quickly, and will be shared with leadership teams across PAHT to help improve the experience of our people and address any concerns raised. How to access the survey You can access the survey via the updated link: http://www. nhspeoplepulse.com Your voice counts and we want to hear from you.

The shared care record connects information from GP practices, community records, and out of hours services in Hertfordshire and West Essex. Additionally, the shared care record includes information from patient records if they have been cared for at a London acute hospital. If you hold a clinical professional registration, you will have access to Cerner HIE, which will provide you with more information to support direct patient care. Your access rights will be based on your existing access to Cosmic - you do not need additional login details. Please note that access to My Care Record will be removed from 1 February. 7
Charity update Young baker makes over 500 gingerbread people to raise funds my neighbours, friends and teachers.
A young baker has been making gingerbread people to raise money for our Intensive Care Unit. Jessica Putt, 10, from Church Langley in Harlow, has been baking gingerbread people to raise money for the ICU as a thank you for the care that her granddad received. She has currently baked over 500 gingerbread people, and has raised more than £500. Jessica’s granddad, Chris Putt, 76, was admitted to the ICU in September 2020 when he was taken ill with COVID-19. He spent 131 days in the ICU and was discharged from hospital to continue his recovery in February 2021.
y
“I enjoyed baking through lockdown and it seemed like the perfect way to raise money for the ICU staff.
Jessica’s original goal was to raise £131, £1 for each day her grandad was in the ICU, but thanks to the generosity of her neighbours, friends, and family, she passed that goal in the first weekend alone. Jessica said: “I wanted to say a huge thank you for saving my grandad’s life, so I baked hundreds of gingerbread biscuits and sold them to
“My granddad has recovered so well and we are so grateful that we got to spend this Christmas together. Thankfully for us it was very different to last year, but we know for hospital staff it is still so challenging. “We send our best wishes to all the staff at PAHT, we will always be grateful to them.” A big thank you to Jessica for your support and this generous donation.

Divisional update - surgery “Surgery is facing a huge challenge with elective operating at the moment, due to our elective care ward being used for COVID admissions as part of the trust's surge plan. "We are pleased to say that we are continuing with day case elective surgery and as much urgent/cancer inpatient work as possible using our temporary six bedded ward in the High Dependency Unit (HDU) area. "We would like to thank our dedicated people for their continued hard work and response to the current pressures, particularly our teams on our wards facing increased workloads due to staffing pressures caused by sickness and self-isolation, and our booking teams who are doing an amazing job dealing with short notice cancellations and bookings.” The surgery divisional management team

Wise about wellbeing... While you are caring for our patients, or supporting those who provide care, it is extremely important to remember to focus on your wellbeing and to check in your colleagues too. There are a wide variety of resources available to you to support your health and wellbeing. Each month, we will be sharing practical information and tips as part of our new wise about wellbeing feature. You can access details of the full range of health and wellbeing resources on the staff health and wellbeing hub on AlexNet and on our staff health and wellbeing page: www.pah.nhs.uk/ healthandwellbeing. 1) Take a break Taking your scheduled breaks is vital to maintaining your energy levels and managing stress. You can use this time to eat nourishing food, hydrate, and switch your mind off from work tasks, increasing your concentration levels when you return. All areas should be able to accommodate breaks by organising the rota effectively. If you have concerns about your allocated breaks, please speak to your line manager or HR business partner for advice. 2) Make time for mindfulness In our busy modern world, and with the pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, it can be difficult to give yourself the time you need to reduce stress, build resilience, and sleep better. There are fantastic mindfulness and meditation tools available to our people – please visit the staff health and wellbeing hub for more information. 3) Give exercise time in your day With long ‘to do’ lists to tackle, it can be easy to think you don’t have time for exercise. However, exercise improves your physical and mental wellbeing. The best way to turn exercise into a part of your normal routine is to make it something you enjoy. The NHS website (www.nhs.uk) has a range of advice and ideas to incorporate exercise into your life, including Couch to 5K, a running programme for beginners. 4) Try the sleep hygiene approach Getting too little sleep, even for a night or two, can leave you feeling exhausted, forgetful, and irritable. Making a few small and simple changes could make a big difference in helping you get the rest you need. Sleep hygiene includes having a regular sleep and wake up schedule, exercising, avoiding caffeine eight hours before bedtime, reducing screen time before sleep, and keeping your bedroom cool, dark and quiet. You can read more advice at https:// thesleepcharity.org.uk/. 5) Seek the support you need There are times in our lives when we all need extra support. Remember that it is ok not to be ok. The staff health and wellbeing team are here to help you – take a look at their hub on AlexNet or contact the team at tpa-tr.shaw@nhs.net. 14
