Quality improvement

Welcome to InTouch magazine – your insight into the latest news and updates from across PAHT. Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone for your hard work over the last few months in managing the ongoing pandemic, getting our non-COVID services restored so effectively and quickly, dealing with the issues caused by the recent flooding and managing the dramatic changes in weather that we have experienced in recent weeks. I know many of you have been working extra hours and shifts to make this all possible and to continue to support all of our patients. Thank you. In this edition, you can read about how we celebrated the NHS's 73rd birthday together, with an opportunity to look back on developments over the years and to look forward to the future. It is also a moment for great celebration across PAHT, with a range of accolades for colleagues. Marking the NHS 73rd birthday together On Monday, 5 July, the NHS marked 73 years since it began. The last year has been unprecedented as we worked together in the fight against COVID-19. You have responded with extraordinary dedication to support our patients. The 73rd birthday of the NHS was an opportunity to reflect on the challenges we have faced and to say thank you to you all. It was also a poignant time to remember the loved ones and friends who have passed away. We held an InTouch briefing with an opportunity to look back on developments over the years, with changes in technology and working practice. Jim Mcleish, director of quality improvement; Cherie Beckett, biomedical scientist, microbiology; Daniella Pritchard, sister in ADSU and staff side secretary; Natalie Gray, matron for cancer, cardiology and clinical support services; and Phil Holland, chief information officer, discussed their experiences.

The NHS birthday was an opportunity to say thank you for the support we have given each other. The last year has been extremely difficult – thank you to you all for your ongoing commitment.

What lies ahead is a journey of transformation and improvement that will lead us successfully into the future, enabling us to deliver modern, integrated and outstanding care that keeps our growing and ageing population healthier. It is designed to inspire and challenge us, to guide and unite us in working smarter and better to achieve our vision. We have already made great progress, thanks to your hard work. But there is much more to do. Now, more than ever, we need to come together as one team, working with our local, regional and national partners, our patients and our communities to make PAHT the centre of excellence we know it can be. We hope you are excited by this strategy, and eager to embrace the challenges ahead. Lance McCarthy, Chief Executive

Our patients said... "Booking appointments online is so easy, then when you get there checking in on the iPad is effortless and you are seen almost immediately - no taking a ticket and queuing as in pre-pandemic times. Staff were quick and highly skilled."

"The day case team are utterly fabulous. I had a procedure done under the day case ward/unit and every single member of the team was just brilliant. The anaesthetists, the nurses, the hospital support staff, and the cleaner were lovely . The hospital was clean and the windows were open due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I felt safer too. "Everyone had time to explain or just talk, and they were kind and had a good sense of humour. I can't thank them enough as these things really make a patient feel at ease. Even though I was last on the list, the hours waiting went fairly quickly. I have been in hospital so many times over the years and this was one of the best hospital experiences I've had. Thank you, really thank you."

"The lady I spoke with could not have been more pleasant, professional and kind. She gave the kind of experience one would usually expect at a five star hotel. It was important to me to let you know how fantastic she was."

"I want to take the time to thank all members of staff in the early pregnancy unit (EPU). This whole team of people basically saved my life. They have all been incredible and nothing I say can show my thanks for this incredible team of people." 13

Congratulations to the Patient Panel Our Patient Panel were honoured to be presented with the Queen's Award for Voluntary Service at a longawaited ceremony on Tuesday 20 July. The Queen's Award is the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK and aims to recognise outstanding work by volunteer groups to benefit their local communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee. The Patient Panel were awarded the accolade last year in recognition of their dedication to representing the voice of patients at PAHT. The ceremony was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

They have been acknowledged for the full range of their work to benefit patients, including hosting conferences, community meetings and directly supporting the care of patients by volunteering their time to initiatives to improve patient experience, such as offering tea and cakes to long stay patients in hospital. The panel has established strong networks and relationships with voluntary organisations, colleges, schools and local businesses in joint efforts to improve services at the hospital. The team were presented with the award by Mrs Jennifer Tolhurst, the Lord Lieutenant of Essex at the ceremony, pictured, right.

Diabetes conference

Our Patient Panel hosted a conference on Wednesday 7 July that focused on a wide range of topics relating to type one diabetes. At the conference, senior healthcare professionals, researchers, and scientists shared their knowledge and expertise in the diabetes field; it was also an opportunity to hear patient stories about their experience of living with diabetes. The aim of the day was to share a better understanding of diabetes among our patients, people and the wider community.

The sessions included: y Patients' perspectives on how they have experienced diabetes y Plans for future diabetes care at PAHT y Diabetes across the wider health and care system and looking forward on our journey towards the new hospital y What does good patient care look like for our diabetes patients? y An insight into groundbreaking technology of how the artificial pancreas was created, hosted by world leader, Professor Hovorka y An insight into the

automated closed-loop insulin delivery system, hosted by pioneer Lane Desborough, chief operating officer of NudgeBG in California Thank you to everyone involved.

Quality improvement We are pleased to share a variety of recent quality improvements to benefit our patients and our people. Thank you to the quality first team (antibiotic App and stoma care project) and everyone involved.

Antibiotic App enables more effective prescribing

Have you tried the App that will make antibiotic prescribing more effective? Clinicians can download a MicroGuide App to enable them to have easy access to the trust's antibiotic guidelines. The App was introduced as part of the ongoing improving patient outcomes programme of work. It ensures appropriate antibiotic prescribing for patients, and should result in a reduction in antibiotics. It is available on Apple and android devices; you can search and download 'MicroGuide' on the Apple and Google Play App store. The App is available on all trust devices, including phones, iPods and iPads under the apps at work icon - it is important to note that the antibiotic guidelines remain on Alex.

Coming soon: new clinical and corporate communications tool

We have recently invested in a new clinical and corporate communications tool called

Alertive. The new system will replace non-emergency bleeps in the first instance; however, it also has the functionality to be used as a clinical messaging tool, with exciting future innovations planned. If you would like to be part of the pilot group to test the new system, please email paht.alertive@ nhs.net.

Your questions answered Is the App secure and will it be able to access my personal data? The Alertive App is very secure and operates all clinical messaging within its own container. No data or images are stored in your private storage areas. The Alertive app does not access or use any personal information e.g. images, contacts or messages from other Apps. Why should I use my own phone? The feedback from most users is that they would prefer not to have to carry a different device for work. Using your own phone allows you to use something you are familiar with.

users, otherwise the App will obey the volume and device settings.   Will the App use all my battery and personal data allowance? No. The Alertive App is capable of running in the background or not at all. The application registers with the phone and will activate when needed, similar to an SMS or phone call.

New stoma care referral process A new electronic referral pathway system has been introduced that will improve the stoma referral process, turnaround times, patient length of stay and reduce the risk of hospital acquired infection.

The referral form should now be used instead of referring a patient via the telephone or email. You can complete the electronic referral form via the internal referrals page on Alex.

Will I be disturbed when I’m at home or not working? No. Users can sign out of the App entirely or out of the roles that they are responsible for when not at work. Even when logged in, only very urgent/ critical alerts will interrupt 15
