Above: an artist’s impression of the new hospital - please note this is not the final version of what the hospital may look like.

Some of you might have seen a BBC TV crew on site this month. We were approached by BBC Look East to run a piece on why we so desperately need to build a new hospital to improve the experience of our people and our patients. As you know, our new hospital is part of a wider national programme for hospitals and as a Trust, we are continuing to work closely with the national New Hospital Programme (NHP) providing clinical and technical support with the development of a national standard design for the hospital of the future. We have the full support of NHP for our planned new hospital and we are currently agreeing the delivery strategy and revised timeline with the NHP team, with an approximate delivery date of 2028 – 2030, depending on the NHP. We are very optimistic we will get the go ahead for our new hospital, and of course you will be the first to know when we do. We’ve been incredibly busy in the preparations for the transformation of a number of our services, so that we can be PAHT2030 Ready and meet our aim to be a modern, integrated and outstanding Overhospital.the last few months we have been: • designing a development control plan for the existing hospital to ensure our estate can continue to support the delivery healthcare until we move to the new hospital • revisiting our model of care to ensure it learns everything it needs to from the pandemic • continuing to look at ways we can embed your views into the design of our new hospital • developing the sustainability plan for now and into the future, including what we can do now to make our current site more ‘green’ • understanding your travel needs now and in the future, and we will be asking patients and visitors what they need very soon • preparing for the rollout of our electronic health record in 2023, the first major step towards a digital enabled new Wehospitalwillbe holding some engagement activities this autumn on how we can improve and develop maternity and family and women’s services, cancer day care and our emergency department. Until then, there is plenty of information on our new hospital website including blogs by our new hospital team and our latest poll. You can also watch a fly-through with artist’s impressions of what the exterior and interior of the new hospital may look like here >

New hospital update

If you are a registered nurse or doctor, please support us this autumn/winter as a vaccination champion, giving vaccinations to colleagues across the hospital. Our staff health and wellbeing (SHaW) team are currently looking for flu vaccination champions, who are expected to be required from the end of September, when the programme is due to begin. You can also support with COVID booster vaccinations for our people when they become available. We are awaiting details of this from the national team and will update you. By giving flu vaccinations, you will have a key role in reducing the spread of flu at our hospital this autumn/winter, protecting our patients, our people and their families.

We are delighted to announce that we have appointed Cerner as the preferred supplier for our forthcoming electronic health record (EHR) implementation.

Thank you to everyone who has given their expertise and time to get us to this important milestone in the project and we look forward to sharing more details on the EHR with you very soon.

Electronic health record - preferred supplier announced

As a preferred supplier, we are not yet in a formal contract with Cerner, it means that we are working closely with their specialist teams to take the EHR forward to a full business case. A public announcement of our contracted supplier will be made following that, this is likely to be early next year.

There is no minimum time commitment – any support you can give is appreciated. Paid bank shifts are also available for specific vaccination clinics organised by the SHaW team.

Having board members share their lived experiences with areas such as disability certainly has impacted on people’s willingness to disclose. A growing number of people have told me that this disclosure has helped them feel more included, and more confident. To record your equality and diversity details follow the steps below:

Note: The disability category field is populated accordingly, but the add icon can be used to record an additional disability record if required. Up to five disability records can be recorded in ESR.

We have bold role models at trust board level who have disclosed their own disabilities - you can take a look at the video of Hattie Llewelyn-Davies, chair of PAHT and Anne Wafula-Strike MBE, associate non-executive director, here. To me, this is a good reason to open up about your disability or long-term health condition.

Improving

patient flow – making it better, together As you will know, the last few months has been an extremely busy time for us as we manage the high demand for our Nationalservices.data indicates that 58% of patients who met the discharge criteria in acute hospitals were not discharged, resulting in significant waiting times for patients in emergency departments. Together, we can make a difference and make things better for our patients and people. To enhance patient flow and improve patient experience, we are working with teams across PAHT towards the following aims: y A reduction in hospital admissions where a patient could be cared for in a more appropriate setting y A reduction in bed occupancy and length of stay (LoS) y An increase in early discharge of patients (before 12pm) y The timely identification and reduction of patient delays y Improving the quality of single referral forms to support complex discharge planning y Keeping patient readmission rates stable y Consistent achievement of internal professional and performance standards Our(IPPS)keyareas of focus are shown in the image above. Look out for more updates coming soon. For more information, please contact Johanna Burge, business change manager, at paht. qualityfirst@nhs.net.

The surgery and critical care divisional management team

Divisional update: Surgery and critical care

"We are currently focusing on delivering the national elective recovery programme. We have a large backlog of patients waiting, some for over a year, for treatment. These delays have been generated and exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic. We are continuing to review all the patients on our waiting lists and are prioritising those with life or limb threatening conditions, those in most clinically urgent need and those waiting the longest for their treatment. In order to deliver the activity as quickly and safely as possible, we are working on optimising our operating theatre efficiency, ensuring we are making the most out of the valuable time patients spend there.

"Over the past few months, we have been focusing on sharing the results of the NHS Staff Survey 2021 and developing our Staff Survey improvement plan, which is particularly focused on addressing poor behaviour in the workplace and encouraging staff to speak up about concerns. As a result of this, we have seen an increase in concerns being raised about culture and behaviour in our operating theatres. The division are , therefore, working closely with our executive team to improve culture and behaviour in our operating theatres, and we have already held a number of engagement events with our people. Improvements are already being seen and we are all working together to create a culture of openness, teamwork and mutual respect at all levels."

Best wishes
