Patricia is graduating this year with a Bachelor of Interior Design degree at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT). She is a passionate, driven, and detail-oriented designer who want to have a great impact on people’s lives through design. After graduation, she will be working towards LEED AP, WELL AP, and NCIDQ Certification. Over the course of her degree, Patricia has developed a strong interest in commercial design, especially in healthcare. This inspired her Capstone project, the Care Hub, a support centre for adolescents and young adults with cancer and their supporters. The design of spaces should encompass more than just the function and aesthetics, but also, how it affects our overall health and well-being. Thus, creating healthy environments should be a consideration for all designs. Aside from her passion for design, Patricia enjoys hiking, cooking, volunteering, and photography in her free time. She also enjoys traveling and exploring new cities, cultures, and foods to enhance her creativity and inspiration for future projects.

PRESSED JUICE BAR J U I C E B A R + E AT E R Y
PRESSED is a new juice bar + raw foods eatery situated in the “Mid-Main” area on Main Street in Vancouver, BC and is a perfect addition in this closeknit and health conscious community. Inspired by the local residents’ drive for healthier living and their influence amongst each other, the concept for PRESSED is the “force of attraction”- a drawing force that causes things to come together. The design applies and plays on the key aspects and ideas associated with the gravitational and electric (opposites attract) forces of attraction into the space.

CONCEPT
Located in Mid-Main Area Vancouver, BC
PRESSED presents a bright, vibrant, open concept which is engaging and inspires social interaction within its collective space of communal tables and group seating. The goal is to captivate people to come to the space, as well as their experience within the space. The feeling of attraction is further expressed through the main focal point, the extensive juice bar which acts as a gravitational center - one which is prominent and connects the surrounding areas towards it. This helps create a sense of cohesion. The strong linear forms found in millwork and furniture represents the intensity and impact felt by feelings associated with the force of attraction. In addition, suspended fixtures from the high ceiling stimulates a free-falling motion which establishes visual interest and draws attention throughout the juice bar and eatery.
Areas Included: Juice bar counter, bar seating, and tables + chairs seating Interior Space: 1540 SF

The educational and service learning center’s role is educating and providing service learning opportunities in an effort to preserve the Amazon Rainforest and the indigenous populations. The concept for the center draws inspiration from the storytelling competence and wondrous connection to the spirit world of the Amazonian Shamans. These qualities represent the character of the spatial arrangement of the learning center.

CONCEPT The central idea behind the design is the promotion of empathy towards Amazonian indigenous peoples and their environment through the power of storytelling and the channeling of the sense of awe one feels when first stepping into the rainforest. By incorporating an interpretive exhibition within the reception area, the design lets the building do the storytelling by rhythmically displaying Amazonian artifacts, graphics and allegories on its walls, floors and ceiling - adding a personal and emotional narrative. The use of flexible and mobile seating arrangements allows collaborative and interactive learning.

The ‘INVISIBLE, NOT SILENT’ exhibit is a new, engaging and flexible exhibition. It draws inspiration from the untold stories, and the different life chapters of the residents of the Downtown Eastside (DTES) which are not always visible to the public. Their strong narratives embody the spirit and the spatial arrangement of the exhibit. The key objective of the exhibit is to dispel misconceptions and reshape society’s perception of the DTES through the power of storytelling.

CONCEPT The lobby and reception areas of the culture lab will exhibit vivid imagery of the DTES to create a sense of curiosity and emotion prior to entering the exhibit. The exhibit guides visitors through a series of galleries starting with a history space and ending with a reflection area. The exhibit also evokes visitors to uncover and experience stories through artistic expressions including photographs, artworks, writings, and videos that capture the personnel aspects of the community. To fully grasp the essence of these expressions, the exhibit utilizes a range of display techniques such as moveable and adaptable display unit, visual projections on surfaces, and interactive displays, further engaging and creating a stronger storytelling experience for the users.

THE CARE HUB SUPPORT CENTRE FOR ADOLESCENTS AND YO U N G A D U LT S W I T H C A N C E R
Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) 15-39 years of age with cancer are the least studied and underserved age group of those diagnosed with cancer. AYAs with cancer make up 4% of the new cancer cases each year in Canada and this number is increasing; 7,900 new diagnoses are estimated for 2017. However, only 0.4% of cancer research funding is allocated to young adults, according to Geoff Eaton, founder of Young Adults Cancer Canada (YACC). Thus, this group requires tailored programs and services to ensure their care is on par with other age groups but also meets their distinct needs. For example, a cancer diagnosis for AYAs can be very isolating because they are typically the first amongst their peers to get it so there is not anyone to relate to or anywhere to receive support.
