Orange County Megachurch Studio 3GA The idea of a megachurch is that of such that some might call ‘controversial’. When a church becomes more than just a place of religion, at what point is it not a church anymore? With this program this idea was dissected and recreated into the modern day ‘megachurch’ integrating religion along with cultural, theatrical, and vehicular. The vehicular is a cruicial part of the Los Angeles culture. To avoid the classically outdated stereotype of ‘drive-in’ the grand procession was emphasized and became the main driver of this project. By placing the main focus on the drop off areas, the language between the interior spaces and exterior was crucial. There is a constant interaction between the two and a blurred sense of what is interior and what is exterior. It is more a fluid flow from one programmatic zone to the next. The overall structure came about form the vectorial fields studied in the Hagia Sophia. By allowing these vectorial fields to create the spaces a more unique interaction between structure and program was developed. The congregation of this church has the ability to inhabit not only the underside of the paneled surface but also the interiors of the individual and merged panels. The structural system is created by turning the traditional curtain wall system on its side and provides support to all interior members. The end result is a self-supportive roof system that gracefully suspends the program areas below.

INHABITABLE ROOF PANELS Areas with larger roof panels are inhabitable spaces for occupants to use as secondary programmatic spaces for the church.

SUPPORTING STRUCTURE

Extrusions along the main axis of the church, allow secondary structural support for the roof panels where they are scaled smaller to allow for light to penetrate.
PIPING SPACE FRAME This piping framing is the primary structure for the enclosing glazing system at a 1 to 1 ratio of glass panel to pipe. It also allows enough space for a person to inhabit.
ROOF PANEL APERTURES Gaps in the gradient roof patttern allow for light to penetrate through the membranes into the main church auditorium.
