itaa ďŹ nal project 2016
In a presentation given by Oregon State University professor, Kathy Mullet, I was asked to design a logo for an International Textile and Apparel Association event being held from November 8-11 2016 in Vancouver, Canada. The presentation surrounded the event’s theme of Blending Cultures. Kathy discussed how she wanted the final logo deign to emulate north west Native American art, incorporating red and black. She also stated how she wanted the final logo design to be clean, but visually interesting. Although I was not chosen for the final design, I know what I designed rang true to what Kathy asked of me.
inspiration
When I heard the theme was called Blending Cultures, I instantly thought of curved lines that somehow connect in an interesting way. After class, I did my research on Google and came across a lot of similar Native American art. Most of what I was visually drawn to were images that were symmetric, like the image of the face below. If you were to reflect one side on the other, they would be identical. Although the fish image is not symmetrical, I was inspired by how it had a visual flow. With those two image inspirations in mind, I began designing.
creative process
My creative process behind this whole project was solely based on my initial inspiration, personal ideas, and primary sketches. Like all creative works I do, I first began doing my reserch. I googled Native American art, found inspirational images, and begin drafting my potential designs. Once I was set on a specific look, I began drawing in my sketchbook. I played with different shapes. Some were swirled lines and others were intricate doodles. From there, I took favorite pieces from my first sketches and blew them up to a much larger scale. I played around with different shapes, yet again, and finally landed on my final logo, incorporating the swirls I liked.

the ďŹ nal product
My final product turned out better than I thought it would. I really struggled with making Blending Cultures become visually interesting, but in the end, I achieved what I set out to accomplish. The way I designed my logo was very clever because it worked well with the colored version and the black and white version. Overall, I was very pleased with how my final logo turned out.
