Some of the most stunning sunsets feature solid decks of clouds that cover the entire sky except for a narrow strip near the horizon. The entire landscape takes on a surreal saffron hue as the clouds reflect the fading sun’s blended shades of scarlet, orange, red and yellow. The illumination of the low sun setting over Little Lagoon created a spectacular cloudscape that enhanced the beauty of the twilight sky. Photo by Jack Swindle

Do your vacation plans include snuggling up in a hotel that features a warm, electric fireplace, full kitchen with wine refrigerator and a home entertainment system with Bluetooth technology? What if you could have these luxuries on every vacation, in your room? You can, when you purchase an RV. Designers have transformed the rolling homes from bare flat beds with basic kitchens and uncomfortable bunks to luxurious homes away from home. And if you choose to become a full-time resident, many of the bigger rigs have more amenities than some basic houses. Jeremy Strickler, who owns RV’s Unlimited in Robertsdale with his father, Ed Strickler, said he was hooked on RV’ing after spending a weekend away with his own family in north Alabama. “We went to a state park, hiked trails and saw waterfalls. My daughter held a snake for the first time,” he said. “You can’t get that unless you get out of the city. After that experience I knew this wasn’t just selling RVs, this was helping to create a lifestyle and memories our customers will cherish forever. “RVs are a family experience,” he said. “They give people a chance to

get away from distractions and focus on what’s important, the people you love. And, there are few places in the country where you can RV yearround like you can here.” Many are RVs are designed to keep families snug, cozy and entertained. The bigger rigs and bus-sized RVs have price tags that stretch into $300,000. Depending on the size monthly payments can be under $1,000 a month, less than some house payments for those who want to live on the road. The higher the price tag, the finer the vehicle. Granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, instant hot water tanks and laundry facilities on board are all choices to be had. RV’s Unlimited is the only local dealer to carry industry giant and Alabama-made Vanleigh RV, owned by Alabama football royalty, Van Tiffin and Leigh Tiffin. Jeremy Strickler said Vanleigh prides itself on building RVs that feature hand-cut wood and interior details that are individually installed by craftsmen, not on an assembly line. “A lot of manufacturers focus on volume but they’ve maintained the value of taking care of their customers,” he said. As he and his father have built their Robertsdale business, Jeremy Strickler said they have adopted the same mantra.

“Do unto others as we would have done to us,” he said. The pair put this into practice by having their staff inspect each RV they sell, whether it is new or used, to keep customers from having issues later. They have found new RVs with rips in the ceilings and other major damage. They fix each before putting
it on the lot. As the pair roll up on their second anniversary in business Jeremy Strickler said he is happy to have put so many Baldwin County families on the road. “When you get rid of all the extra stuff, you realize you can live without it,” he said.

BEACH ART:
Rick Tino Most days Rick Tino bikes to his shop and wears flip flops even when it’s cold. Really cold. He will gladly paint you a beach scene. A beautiful one. But some days aren’t sunny, or warm. When these moods call Tino also paints crisp fall leaves and dark wooded paths that beckon from the walls of his shop. Light and dark. Beachy and cold. Tino’s works stretch across seasons of emotions. “I’m a Gemini and I think my twins are twins so there are several of us in this head fighting for control,” he said. Tino’s work has been a hallmark of the beach for decades. After traveling with his artwork the tight curled painter opened a roadside shop along the beach. He sat on the porch and painted all day. Storm surges washed into the shop and eventually sent him packing. Now, Tino can still bike to the beach but only epic waves can reach him. His gallery, Tino’s Fine Art & Frames is tucked safely away from the surf. These days he’s more likely to see work by Renaissance masters float through his door. Tino, a self-taught artist, says he paints, therefore he must frame. And his framing technique has become as
14 Beachin’ ● February 2018
coveted as his artwork. Devoted fans say he charges a third of the cost of big box stores while giving triple the attention to their art. He has framed two works by Picasso, seven by Salvador Dali and two Rembrandts. One, valued at $300,000, was prepped, framed and sent home in a cool 40 minutes. Tino said the owners of most high dollar paintings already know the type of frame they want. Others ask Tino to “work his magic.” Start with the artwork, he says. “I’d much rather do the painting for the painting than just pick a frame that matches,” he said. “I
want to design the room around the painting.” Tino works quickly to the ambient, new age music that wafts through the shop. His tight spiral curls bob up and down as he moves from glass to frame to artwork. If you hang out long enough he might even tell you how he got those curly locks, and it wasn’t from his momma. They appeared two weeks after he was struck by lightning in his early 20s. “Everything went white,” he said. “When I got to the car we could smell something burning.” He works quickly but cautiously.
“When you work with glass all day”, he said, “it’s not a matter of if you will get cut but where and how severely.” After a while, you will come to appreciate why Tino loves this work. “You never know what’s going to come through the door,” he said. While priceless masterpieces are great, Tino hasn’t forgotten traveling artists who are starting the same way he did. His shop is full of consignment items made by local artisans who don’t have a storefront: jewelry, woodwork and fabric arts. “I like to give people more than just me,” he says. “Our little show just fits together.”

Anthony Jones ... Well Worth A Visit! Voted The Best Salon in Baldwin County in 2014
It was a beauful summer morning when we le Fairhope, low humidity and not a cloud in the sky. We were on our way down to Orange Beach to check out a business that many of our friends have told us about, this Englishman who had opened a Hair Salon on the beach with his daughter Emma. My hair is very important to me and geng a good haircut is a must, and that is what Anthony Jones is known for and excellent hair color to boot. We have both been very dissasfied with the last few aempts on designing our hair to suit our lifestyles; most of the so called stylists did not take into consideraon our age or understand that we both want to look great without a lot of fuss and bother. The traffic was a bit heavy due to the summer visitors, but we arrived on me to this charming yellow and white beach house on the beach road with a fabulous view of the Gulf of Mexico. We were greeted warmly by Anthony and Emma and they ask us if we would like a cold drink or a glass of wine before he started making us beauful. Pam, my friend, went first since I was a lile chicken aer the last experiences. Anthony directed her to a styling chair and went on to explain the ten most important rules in designing a custom hairstyle to suit her. He first looked at her face shape and explained that there are five face shapes out there and told her her face shape was oval. The next was bone structure and head shape, aer that was the type of her hair, the texture of her hair, then what sort of condion her hair was in, followed by the way the hair grows out of the head, plus cow licks, then her likes and dislikes and fashion. Wow! What a lot of things to get right. So then Emma started with a relaxing shampoo and deep condioning, then for the next 30 minutes Anthony’s hands were a sea of moon, lastly a quick blow dry with hardly any fuss and presto she was finished! She was so happy and she could not believe the difference in her hair. Now it was my turn, my hair especially in the summer gets 16 Beachin’ ● February 2018
very frizzy and dry; I have tried everything out there for my hair with no success! Anthony explained that commercial hair products are made different to professional hair products. Commercial shampoos are made of mild detergent and the condioners are based on petroleum oil. Where professional hair products are pure and natural and give back to the hair, he also went on to say that we should all wash our hair every day and condion our hair the same. Anthony explained that at all mes our hair has to have at least 8% moisture in it the same as our skin, we should treat our hair the same way as we treat our skin, by moisturizing it every day which made a lot of sense to me, since the last stylist told me not to wash my hair every day because in her mind it would dry it out. Anthony explained to me that yes using some drug store products would dry your hair out if washed daily. Aer we went through the ten rules, he took me to the shampoo area and treated me to the best shampoo and condioning my hair had ever had. While shampooing, Emma explained to me what I should do in the morning in the shower, again stressing no over-thecounter hair products, that’s why my hair is dry and frizzy. Aer shampooing and before condioning, towel blot the hair because the hair is porous like a sponge, pung any condioner on one’s hair when it is full of water will not go into the hair itself, so blot it first then apply the product and leave it in while you are washing yourself. Then before you leave the shower, rinse and count up to 10 slowly and stop, just rinse the excess and no more. Aer she explained to me the hows & whys, I understood. They are like hair doctors, if we listen and do what they says it works! Anthony has his own line of products and everything he used on me was his and believe me the stuff works. The cut he gave me was wonderful; I walked out a new woman and so did Pam, no more frizzes! Oh, by the way he used a great product before he dried my hair called “POTION.” It is a gel with a lot of healing features with body, fabulous! I bought a bole. Best money we ever spent and yes, we are definitely going back. He is a true professional.
Well worth a visit!

This gown by Panoply is crafted with tull featuring gold applique. The sweetheart neckline graces the top of this A-line style gown.
Mardi Gras means sparkle, glitter and gowns for all BY ALLISON MARLOW Let the sequins sparkle. Let the tulle tuft and fluff. Let the shoes be sturdy and painless. Let the good times roll this Mardi Gras season! Formal ware shops are primping and prepping their gowns as Baldwin County mystic societies prep for the biggest social event of the year. Brenda Neill, owner of Bridal & Formals by Renee’ Lynn, in Fairhope, said since designers generally don’t create gowns specifically for Mardi Gras balls, revelers choices are dictated by prom fashion. This year the hottest colors on the runway are red, burgundy, wine and emerald green. Never fear. Retailers like Neill know what Mardi Gras attendees want and they are on the lookout to bring those dresses to their racks. Neill belongs to a conglomerate of small, locally-owned bridal boutiques that have banded together to wield more purchasing power with design houses. Since the group buys thousands of dresses at a time, as opposed to dozens like a single merchant might, they receive larger discounts. Neill said this allows her to pass a larger discount on to her customers, up to 60 percent off of many gowns. Currently, Neill’s quiet little store on Highway 181 is bustling with activity. Women of all shapes and sizes wait in line to try on six dresses at a time. Brides are politely banned during Mardi Gras season, to make way for queens and their courts. This is their day. An insider tip — make your dress shopping trip on a Wednesday, before noon. The stores are practically empty. Shopping for a tuxedo? Budget eight whole minutes of your day. Neill said the men are in and out for measurements in a flash. While colors change each year, not much more about formal fashion does, Neill said. Types of fabrics, and styles of sleeves, maybe. Otherwise most shoppers are searching 22 Beachin’ ● February 2018
for comfort and fit. Never been to a ball? Check with your host for the rules or Costume de Rigueur. Most mystic societies will turn away revelers in short skirts at the door. Floor length is the rule. That makes this year’s biggest prom style a problem: skirts that resemble more of a blinged-out jumpsuit, featuring short shorts and a detachable skirt are all the
rage. Neill often visits fashion houses’ warehouses and rides a forklift through the racks to handpick the gowns she sells. If you see what you like on her racks, grab it. She only orders one of each dress. “You absolutely don’t want to see your dress on someone else at a ball,” she said. “If you see your dress across the room, you’ll know it.” The toughest dresses to find? Plus size. Neill said many fashion houses don’t even carry sizes above a 16, which is why she goes out of her way to buy from vendors who do. In fact, plus size dresses make up a huge portion of her annual Mardi Gras sales. She said plus size customers often visit big box department stores and are limited to one or two dresses
that resemble bland, mother of the bride dresses more than festive Mardi Gras gowns. She recalls one woman who burst into tears in the dressing room after not just finding a dress that fit but seeing that she had a choice of several dresses. “They need to feel beautiful too regardless of their size,” Neill said. Bridal & Formals by Renee’ Lynn is open from now until Fat Tuesday, seven days a week. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. Neill said she will attend a ball and enjoy the revelry and the joy that her dresses bring. But she is looking forward to Fat Tuesday, the last day of the season, when her boutique will be closed for the day. “That is the day we sleep,” she said.
This variegated Johnathan Kayne gown captures the colorful essence of Mardi Gras with a modified a-line, iridescent stones and sequined, modified neckline.
Another gorgeous Panoply design features a modified sweetheart neckline, horsehair braid hem and fit and flare style.
Model and store employee Tiffany Lawson shows off the incredible design on the back of this Panoply gown. Many gown backs are as detailed as the front. Iridescent stones shimmer over the illusion neckline and back, topping the fit and flare style.

BY ALLISON MARLOW How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth of the bottom of a scrumptious, delectable chocolate milkshake with a heart-shaped, chocolate-dipped cake on top, mountain of whip cream and sprinkles — lots of them. Valentines at the Yard Milkshake Bar in Gulf Shores are works of art that melt in your mouth. The staff creates luscious shakes that stand nearly a foot tall for every holiday season and Valentine’s Day is no exception. The specialty shakes retail for $13 each plus tax. The popular ice cream shop celebrates its second anniversary in May and will open another location in Panama City in March. Ice cream aficionados know in the heat of the summer, the best seat here is the early seat. At the height of the tourist season
the wait for a handmade, towering shake can stretch two hours. Ali Green, general manager, said this spring the ice cream bar will open a newly renovated seating area that should ease wait times. Still, there is plenty of mouthwatering delights to enjoy during the off-season. Every Friday the staff releases a new specialty shake. Don’t like their choices? Build your own with a full pallet of choice toppings including donuts, cheese cake and brownies. “You can be as creative as you want,” Green said. “The more creative you are, the more fun it is.”
The Shakes Don’t Go Breaking My Heart: Strawberry ice cream, with chocolate drizzle, topped with whipped cream, a heart-shaped Hostess Ding Dong cake and Valentine sprinkles.
