Doric Being round and having no base the Doric is the simplest of the three Roman pillars.


Ionic Also having a rounded base but not as simplistic as the Doric pillar the Ionic pillar has bases and has scroll-like capital.


Corinthian The Corinthian like the one before also has a rounded base but with a capital that is very decorated with Acanthus leaves it is the least simplistic of the three.


Ampersand Ampersand comes from the Latin word “et” which means and. The name Ampersand comes from the term “And per say and”.

Interlace Most often found in Celtic work Interlaces are a woven designs.


Lacertines Sometime animals are worked into the interlace and then it is called lacertine.


Egyptian Characteristics commonly found in Egyptian art are: men are darker than women, hieratic scale is used to show importance of figures, a grid was used to help keep proportions right and they had very simplified contour lines for their illustrations and then blues blacks browns greens and yellows were used to color the illustrations.


Mesoamerican The Mesoamericans are credited for creating an accurate calendar along with developing writing, astronomy and math. They has very sophisticated metal work and were also known for their basket weaving. The played ritual ball games that had both religious and political significance and often the losers of the games were sacrificed to the gods.


Initial Cap Initial caps are large letters used within the text.


Drop Cap Drop caps are large embellished capital letters that drop in line with the text so that the top of the large letter doesn’t go above the first line of text.


Rose Window A circular window of stained glass that often depicted stories from the bible or religious figures.


Stained Glass Stained glass is brightly colored glass that is cut and shaped and placed with other pieces of cut glass to create a beautiful piece of work that gets brought to life when the sun shines through it illuminating all the colors.


Rococo Rococo is a style that started in France and was designed for and by the French elite and is very ornate and light and often very busy.


Illuminated Manuscript Illuminated Manusrcripts are highly decorated with beautiful embellished illustrations normally surrounded by brightly colored borders. Pages with text have lovely drop caps where a large capital letter is dropped in line with the text and these large letters are usually quite embellished and sometimes have illustrations that tell a story


Pictograph Sketches that represent exactly what is depicted.


Ideograph Pictures or symbols used to convey thoughts of ideas.


Petroglyph Petroglyphs can be either Pictographs or Ideographs and are carved or scratched signs or simple figures on rock.


Information Graphics Created by William Playfair, Information Graphics are visual representation of information, knowledge, or data shown in a way that is easy for others to understand.


Borders Borders are used to surround an illustration and help to embellish and add color.


Calligraphy Pictures or symbols used to convey thoughts of ideas.
