The first few months after giving birth...

are filled with so many new emotions and unknowns. One minute you’re overwhelmed with joy, and the next you’re crying and doubting your decisions about what’s best for your baby. As a new mom myself, I know these feelings all too well. I know all about the highs and lows of the first three months with your baby, also known as the fourth trimester. I created A Heart So Full because I wanted to remind new mothers everywhere that they aren’t alone as they step into this wonderful new season of life. Everything you’re feeling is totally normal and part of what makes this time with your newborn so memorable. I filled these pages with the encouragement I needed to hear the most during those first days and weeks with my son. My hope is that these daily messages comfort you and cheer you up as you walk along your path as a new mother. As you embark on each new week as a mama, I want to help you find the courage and strength to take each day as it comes, while remembering that you have everything you need already to be the best mom for your child.

Mama, you did it! You brought your beautiful baby into this world with courage and perseverance. Whether your birth was quick or long, the fact that you delivered your baby is a miracle worth celebrating. I hope you realize how brave and capable you are. You are already such an amazing mother to your baby, so be proud of yourself! Your new life will unfold in the most beautiful way. The best is yet to come.

Your birth story is beautiful no matter how intense it might have been. Make sure to give yourself time to process your experience. Maybe your birth plan didn’t go exactly the way you envisioned. That’s okay. It’s also okay to feel disappointed and upset, but what matters is that you don’t sit in that place for too long. Feel what you need to feel, but then move forward! You are strong, mama!

It’s easy to forget about your own body when you’re so caught up with the baby, but give yourself some grace. LOTS of it. Don’t be in a rush to get your “pre-baby body” back. Between the night sweats, breast engorgement, exhaustion, and swelling, it’s important to realize your body needs a lot of love and kindness! Encourage your body. Tell it (out loud) that it’s doing a great job! You will never regret taking things slowly to let your body rest.

As a new mother, being needed by your baby is the ultimate badge of motherhood. There is a deep desire to fulfill the needs of your child, and that is beautiful. But the reality is that in between the sleepless nights and all the crying—from both the baby and you—you need to ask for help and not be ashamed of it. Asking for help from your partner or community is not weak. It shows strength. It really does take a village to raise a child. So, lovely, don’t hold back asking for help if you truly need it. People want to be there in your corner and help you! Let others be a strength to you in this season, even if it feels vulnerable.

I promise you: your body will heal. Giving birth to a baby is what your body was designed to do. Just remember that healing afterward takes time. I know you want to be on your feet and bouncing back into normal life, but that’s not always how it goes! So don’t forget to rest—it will help you heal!

The first few days, weeks, and months after delivering your baby can be a whirlwind of emotions. You may feel happy one moment and extremely sad the next. This is normal! Your body went through a lot and your hormones are constantly changing. Don’t be afraid of what you feel, because there are millions of mothers who have experienced exactly what you are feeling. This too shall pass! The most important thing to do is give yourself permission to feel your emotions. I promise it will get better.
