Picture Framing - Certain technical jargons
Terms you should know related to framing techniques, tools, materials and supplies. Framing had its own jargon long before the high-tech buzzwords of the computer era. Naturally, more technical terms come into being as new materials and tools are introduced. Many of these techniques, tools are used in the production of your framing order by some of the famous online framing stores like Tuckerframe, Michaels, Paint Box Art & Framing, FrameBridge etc. These definitions of picture framing are here to help you understand some basic concepts related to picture framing.
1. Acid Free : Any material with a pH level higher than seven. Acids can react with paper products such as photographs, causing discoloration and shortening their lifespan. Paper materials with a pH below 6.5 or above 8.5 are not considered acid-free for the purposes of picture framing.
2. Acid Etched : In glazing and decorative work, acid etching alters one or both sides of the glass sheet to change its reflective qualities. When the etching is completed, all acids are neutralized and the surfaces are cleaned.
3. Acrylic : A clear industrial plastic used as a substitute for glass in picture framing. 4. Adhesive : A sticky material used to bond two or more surfaces together. 5. Anti-Reflective Glass : A specialty clear glass that has a coating which reduces or eliminates reflection. The objective of this glass is to eliminate distractive reflections while giving the viewer the best perspective.
6. Barrier Material : This material is used in framing packages to prevent acid movement from the wood molding to the art.
7. Conservation Framing : A type of framing that keeps the artwork as unaltered as possible while using materials which minimize the artwork’s deterioration by environmental factors.
8. Double Mat : It consists of 2 matboards (top and bottom). The opening of the bottom mat surrounds the image. The top mat covers the bottom mat.

11. Float Glass : A special type of glass by floating liquid glass over molten tin. This manufacturing process produces thin, clear and stable glass. All of the glass products that we use are manufactured this way.
12. Glare : A bright and dazzling reflected light. 13. Glass : A type of glazing used in picture framing. Glass is commonly composed of sodium carbonate, lime and sand.
14. Glazing : A generic term for glass or acrylic, used to cover and protect artwork in a picture frame.
15. Hinge Mount : A mount that uses Japanese handmade paper and cooked starch paste as the adhesive. By using the starch to moisten a strip of fiber, the paper sticks to the strip of fiber. Another support strip can then mount the first strip and the art onto the board.
16. Infrared Energy : Infrared energy exists in sunlight and tungsten. It heats artwork, which can dry it out prematurely and accelerate decay. Keeping artwork out of direct light in cooler areas can help reduce damage from infrared energy.
17. Lignin : A natural component of wood fiber that is acidic, but acts as a binder holding wood together as a glue.
18. Mat Board : A material that covers and protects the image. Mat boards have a window (also known as the exact mat opening) cut in the center through which the image can be viewed. In addition to protecting the image, mat boards are available in many different styles and colors for the purpose of enhancing artwork.
19. Moulding : The material used for the picture frame. It can be either wood or metal. Moulding can be decorative, ornate or very simple.

20. Non-Glare Glass : A type of glass that minimizes reflection due to a very fine etch in its surface. This glass deadens artwork details, especially when used with some spacing between the art and glass. While still widely available, its use has diminished greatly due to the advent of anti-reflective glass products which show all the detail while minimizing reflective glare.
21. Picture Frame : It provides an attractive border and functions as a structural support for the artwork.
22. Plexiglass : A brand of conservation grade acrylic glazing. 23. Preservation : The process of protecting art from damage that can be caused by the environment that the art is displayed in or from the framing components.
24. Shadow Box Frame : A deep frame with acrylic or glass used to display personal momentos such as military medals, old coins etc.
25. Stretched Canvas : A canvas that has been mounted onto a stretcher bar support framework in preparation for framing or hanging.
26. Ultraviolet Filtering Glass : Coated glass that keeps out 97-99% of damaging UV rays. This is the standard followed by all quality framers.
27. Window Mat : A protective and decorative layer that keeps artwork from coming into contact with the glazing. It provides an air space between the art and the glazing. The window mat is available in many colors and can even be covered in fabric. So next time when you get your picture framed, you exactly know what technical specifications to ask for!
