STRANGEST DREAM LOUISE JANE WILLIAMS BIOGRAPHY

If one were to believe in fate, they might say that it was the heavy hand of fate that made sure Louise Jane Williams (Lou) became the visual artist she is today. You see, not so long ago Lou was a talented young ballet dancer studying her way towards a career in dance at the VCA in Melbourne. One fateful day her career was snatched right out from underneath her when two motorists collided and knocked her down while she was walking along a suburban footpath. Sure, she attempted to gain back what she had lost, but soon her love for the dance aesthetic began, quite naturally, to transfer to a love of still images. First she turned to photography, capturing the world in grainy black and white film and then her hand began to illustrate once more as it had done when she was a child. It’s there we see, in each new picture, her fragility and her strength of character as they entangle into something that is absolutely magic.

within that silence because of careful framing and context. Inspired by children and a huge LOVE of picture books it’s only fitting that Lou should conjure up all kinds of magical creatures and characters!! Her child like characters pop up and present themselves, usually glancing sideways and always commanding a presence. She is big fan of black ink, but has recently opened up her palette to include a little bit of colour here and there. When painting, she is inspired by nature and emotional experience working in watercolour, gouache and ink to create wonderfully abstract and expressive pieces.

Lou’s own label, Painted Street is more than just a brand name it has been the umbrella for which she and her partner, musician and artist Alex Hallahan, have created and distributed their work during the last decade. Painted Street has a quintessentially Melbourne feel. Originally founded because of Seeing as though Lou’s early life was the duo’s need for independence, it’s very much concerned with movement, grown into a wonderful world of art it seems a quirky trait to find that most and music. of her illustrations are focused on one Lou currently resides in the beautiful very still moment captured in time, yet Illawarra region not far below Sydney. in their own way the characters move You might find her drawing by the sea.
