Julius John’s chilling art
P.S {ART} in collaboration with Rohtas 2 & Faiz Foundation Trust introduced us to the brilliant work of Julius John. Curated by Seher Tareen, read about what she has to say about this chilling art installation.
T
here is a cool, calm, collected confidence to Julius John. When I first met him, over a year ago, he had just graduated from the National College of Arts (NCA), and was working as the assistant curator at NCA’s Zahoor-ul-Akhlaq Gallery. Having already worked at the gallery as a student, as a graduate he seemed to be in masterful command. And so it came as no surprise to me to hear that in his college admission interview he stated that he was not looking for fame or fortune. When asked what it was that he was looking for, he answered, “Satisfaction.” Confidence. Julius’s work deals primarily with navigation through geographical and social divides. Referring to his neighbourhood, Kot Lakhpat, which is cordoned off from the more affluent suburbs that surround it on two sides, by an open sewer, called the ‘ganda naala,’ he says, “I go to posh places and then I cross the naala which is a different life altogether, almost like a graveyard.” The broken houses with broken facades that line the naala are the result of a government policy aimed at gentrifying the area. The building of a road, that has been three years in the making, has pushed the residents of this largely low-income community further and deeper into their “broken homes.” 36

The deeper you delve into Julius’s work, or his mind (the two are synonymous), the more there is to discover. The theme of darkness is another predominant feature he likes to play with. The depth of his work, however, is in the details. The reference to the naala serves as a reminder of the open wound of social and religious intolerance that is, alarmingly, gaining strength in Pakistan today. The darkness that lingers in his pieces, mirrors the apocalyptic references in the Bible that he so often, and at times satirically, uses as inspiration for his art. Julius is a thinking artist; every placement of colour, every stroke and every positioning of every object is thought out and serves a larger purpose. Analysing his work is like having a conversation with a brilliant mind. For his first solo show, Julius has found inspiration in the following verse: “…and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon, for the sun stopped shining.” (Luke 23:44,45). The “space” created by Julius is providing the viewer with an experience, a walkthrough of the gallery, with heavy doses of symbolism, in every nook and cranny. There are three elements that make up this experience: the two dimensional drawings on the

eral symbolism of this show is of the geographic divide, there are vastly more symbolic forces at play here. He calls it “the underlying politics of the naala.” There is a sense of urgency in the oozing “black water.” It represents the emotions of a religious minority as it is, according to him, in a state of flux. The second grave installation juxtaposed in an eerie opposite state of death-like stillness, alludes to the fatality of inaction. The red tree is not living, yet it is the colour of blood, an interesting contradiction. From one angle the two “graves” merge as one, “but I split the two” says Julius as he explains the verse that inspired the installation. “The curtain of the temple tore into two from top to bottom.” (Luke 23:45) What makes Julius John a strong person is exactly what makes him a strong artist, with a strong point of view. He is not one to makes excuses for himself. Whether it is the estrangement from his father in his early adolescence, heartbreak in his teens, or the issues that come with being part of a religious minority in an increasingly extremist society, Julius John does not identify himself as a victim of his circumstances. He has had moments of fear, episodes of emotional difficulty, all based on his religious identity yet he does not let that define him. This is what I found to be the most inspirational facet of his personality. “I am a dreamer, I decide my own destiny, I’ve carved my path for myself.” It is no wonder he is confident; with a distinction in his thesis, his first solo show and a Fulbright scholarship under his belt, Julius is poised to do just that. walls, the three dimensional installation and the shadows. When experienced collectively, it is a powerful force. It echoes, with a quiet conviction, the current socio-religious divide that threatens to devastate the nation. Using a thin slab of black dry pastel, Julius has transformed the walls of the gallery into a picture still, a moment frozen in time, of the area where he was born and bred, which his art so often pays homage to – Kot Lakhpat. There is a two-part installation that rests in the interior space of the gallery. Two bathtubs are placed parallel to each other, one upright and the other inverted. The former has thick tar-like paint oozing from it while a short, red Christmas tree stabs the latter on one edge. The tubs signify graves, the Christmas tree the tombstone and the black paint a reference to the naala. The upright “grave” spilling over with thick black paint serves as a potent symbol of the open wound. He is manipulating the lighting in the space, casting two strategic shadows that reflect the silhouettes of the installations onto the one wall he has left bare. Apart from the two dim bulbs used to cast these shadows, the space is enveloped in darkness. It all comes together as a whole and every artistic decision has a background story, a reason. With Julius’s work it is essential to peel the layers, every layer adds a deeper meaning and greater value to it. While the gen-

ISFANDYAR ZAMAN So there are a couple of things wrestling amongst each other in my head but let’s get back to that a bit later. The last sojourn was aboard the IC (Inter City) train from Brussels to Frankfurt, it turned out to be a very functional civilized German ride. The café car was stocked enough to keep you sustained but nothing over the top. The train stations along the way were all gleaming and grand and the rolling countryside a pleasure. Frankfurt itself, once just a wound up German power capital is slowly unwinding and the city itself had some of a surge happening. With the European Central Bank, gaining some much needed extra powers, the city is gearing itself to become more international. The trip itself was to teach a group of Chinese Executives about Europe and its economy. Having someone repeat every word you say in a different language gives you the chance to pause yourself and reflect on what you just said. However the challenge remains to make a joke and have it translated and to make it work. It’s an art one is yet to master. It’s nice to see our Sino brothers preparing to conquer Europe and once again it makes one cringe at the battles we ourselves are embroiled in back home. And back in the land of the pure it’s all about drones, drones drones. Firstly, any extra judicial killing can never be justified and the US should be taken to court, however the drone debate has shown our own schizophrenic nature compounded. Let us first reflect on the NATO container burnings and the blockade of them till the drone stop. Let us remember that Pakistan itself was a willing (though 40

The point here is we signed on the dotted line. We agreed in an international agreement that Pakistan can be a transit point for goods being taken to Afghanistan and for NATO supplies when they need to revert back. Yes we suffered our own war on terrorism but the trucks going up and down Torkham are not to blame. At the same time we continue to take our begging bowl all over the World. Why would the US Senate grant us more funds whilst using the alternate route through the Stans is costing them much more? The EU grants us preferential trade status which helps our exports; would they still do it if we keep on blocking the NATO retreat from Afghanistan? Every action has repercussions. I for one do not support linking the NATO truck banning to some drones. We made a commitment and we need to stand by it...period! There is another commitment we have made and that is to every Pakistani child born. That commitment is to by the parents and the State to ensure child health. There is an attempt to vaccinate every child so that he/she can grow to their full potential. There was some noise at some level how Polio drops are work of the devil but that has been overtaken by linking polio drops being administrated to the ending of drones. How is ensuring that our children don’t get inflicted by this crippling disease linked to some buzzing machine doing target practice. We are one of 3 countries globally to still suffer from Polio and the number of cases is growing. If the Saudi’s didn’t ban the drops then our dear mullahs have their marching and should see no argument for banning the drops. Every Polio team has to be accompanied by the local Imam, I don’t want to empower them but I’d rather use them to my advantage. Show them videos of kids with Polio and bring to our fold. Additionally the great polio workers usually work for free and risk their lives daily, they have taken upon themselves to keep our children healthy and they are getting slaughtered for it, they are my unsung heroes of the highest order. Dear PTI since you are happy to do a sit in over anything, can you arrange one on this subject? For every 100 chants you do on the great injustice the USA is doing to Pakistan and how the Taliban are our brothers, if you even once mention the Polio issue once you have my vote back (again). Actually dear NS, can you please also do something about and if you can’t then just tell little Shahbaz (I have faith in him). For once, this is a plea for the nation. We may have a travel ban coming upon and us and the World could not be more happy if they can be rid of the epidemic creating nation we have become. For seeing what is happening globally and to get away from Geo, I’d say subscribe to Monocle. They will deliver to Pakistan and you will get a much needed respite from getting riled up from the pressing issues we have. On the shopping must list, I’d say ditch the oriental carpets we have and go the patchwork route. Actually speaking of drones and polio as kind of diluted my attention to things that may be thought of distracting, but distract we must. Adios and next time, l’ll promise cheerier topics.

UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH TENA DURRANI BY NATASIA KHALID
Tell us a little bit about yourself. I’m 33 years old. I am divorced & getting married soon. I have an 8 year old daughter. I grew up in Lahore and moved to Karachi about 15 years ago when I got married. When did you first start designing? It was a complete fluke. I actually always wanted to become an interior designer and I would actually scoff at other drawing room designers. While I was pregnant with my daughter my sister in law suggested that I get a tailor in the house and start designing to stay busy. Once I started, gradually my customers would want to meet me and discuss their outfits and started asking for samples, so I just hung out some pieces for them to select thinking that was it as I had just started with one tailor. Soon I was so involved with my customers that my business 42

started growing and it was impossible to do it from home but my in laws were very against me having my own shop. However, after my divorce I realized I need to do this more professionally as it was something I enjoyed. That’s when I started looking for people to help me restructure my finances and I found Taimur who changed things around and organised my company. Who or what inspired you to start designing? Frankly, I really took this seriously once I was divorced and realised I need to support my daughter and myself so really she is what motivated as well as inspired me. I believe each collection needs to be better than the previous because I can always do better and I keep trying to outdo my last collection.
As a designer, what are some of the challenges you face? Professionally, luckily I have Taimur to handle the whole business and finance bit but I feel when you’re doing couture on a large scale you have to be consistent and extra careful about quality control and you need constant supervision. On a personal level, I work late so I don’t get to see my daughter as much as I would like to. I want to spend more time with her. What makes your brand different from the rest? I’m probably the only designer who doesn’t follow themes. It makes me feel constricted in my design philosophy. It is not necessarily a good thing but I want each of my outfits to be different from one another. Classic fashion or Modern fashion, which one do you prefer and why? Everything! Just Like I can’t follow a theme I find both beautiful. I love mixing the two. Variety is very important to me. I want to design for every kind of woman. I want older women of all sizes and young skinny girls, all to be able to find something at my store. I believe beauty is universal. What is your personal style statement? My personal style is still evolving. For 10 years of my life I was in a shell and had no style. I just need my day wear to be very comfortable while I’m working other than that I am very low key but if I have to go wedding I dress up and wear all the heavy outfits I love. What are the qualities you look for in a friend? I haven’t had the time to make friends. I just poach other people’s friends (LOL). Honesty I’m very blunt, so people have to be tough to be able to deal with that. They need to have a good sense of humour and they should respect my personal space as I like to keep a little distance. Tell us about your latest collection. We have opened up our print department finally. It has al-
lowed me to do all the crazy fun things I couldn’t play around with in my couture outfits. Who are your favorite designers and why? I have always loved Elie Saab. His gowns are so dreamy. Karl Lagerfeld is so cool and so inspiring. What advice would you like to give to other upcoming or aspiring designers? Don’t get caught up in what you think people need, you should always aspire to give great quality. Don’t follow what other designers are doing as it spoils your creative process. Integrity of design and quality is key. RAPID FIRE: Favorite cuisine? I love Biryani. Your perfect Sunday? Ideally, a great workout. A great movie at the cinema and just sleeping the rest of the day. Guilty pleasure? Carbs!!! Favourite handbag? Celine Luggage. I would love to get it in all colours. Favorite perfume? Haute Couture- Givenchy. It’s very old but I’ve rediscovered it. Hobbies? Work. I love work! Most daring thing you’ve done? I used to bunk school back in the day. My daring has been seen in real life. I am a lioness if you cross me. Favourite local designer? Bunto Kazmi is awesome and I love Rizwan Beyg as well. Favourite local model? Fauzia Hamman. Finally, 3 words to describe yourself. I am off-kilter. loyal & funny. 2014
