How and when did you start your jewellery line called 'HayaLutfullah'? Since second year at uni, I knew I wanted to have my own label. However, I havent yet officially launched my label but do plan on launching my line, through an exhibition in December in Karachi. When did you first realise that you want to pursue your career as a jewellery designer? As a child, I was very crafty and always made handicrafts with any material I thought was worth recycling. A majority of my crafts included jewellery and accessories. Even though back then I only aspired to become an ‘artist’, when I went to university with the intention of studying Fine arts, I changed my path. Through the different pathways I studied at uni, I realised that my passion lay in design. Where I could use my hands to think through my ideas and bring them to life in 3D. Have you earned a degree in jewellery designing or are you self taught? Yes. I have an honors degree in Jewellery Design from Central Saint Martins, London. Who have been your biggest mentors and what's the best piece of advice they've given to you? I dont have or have had any mentors but I do have a very

supportive network of family and close friends who are always there to champion me on. The best piece of advice anyone of them has ever given me, would be, to be fearless. What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line? My biggest fear would be whether people will understand my work or not since my jewellery is mostly conceptual. I consider it to be art jewellery rather than jewellery purely based on aesthetic. Having said that, every time I feel that fear creeping in, I try to remind myself that my work is for me to understand and really feel. As long as I am being honest with myself and my practice, opinions do not matter as there will always be plenty. I just need to focus on what is important. Where do you get inspiration from? Im heavily inspired by music and movement. The world of sound is exceptionally fascinating and so vast, that I dont think I can ever fall short on finding inspiration there. Other than that, I draw inspiration from how I am feeling at the beginning of a project. I then let my instincts guide 36

me through my creative process and try not to control my journey too much. What is your favourite part about being a costume jewellery designer? I would like to replace ‘costume’ with ‘conceptual’. My favourite part about being a conceptual designer is that the outcome of every project is almost like a memento from that period in time. Since a lot of thought and investment of the self goes into my work. It is also interesting to see how my work is perceived by people and what my audience thinks my inspiration is. Which is by far your personal favourite piece from your creations? My personal favourite would be the choker (called Evanescent Infinity) I made for a performance. I made it using home-made body scrub. I used Ghee, coffee and sugar to make the scrub then re-made my mother’s choker using that scrub. The original choker was passed onto my mum by my grandmother. I loved playing with the idea of making timeless jewellery ephemeral. My current collection that has been made out of Pears and Dove soap, is in fact an off-shoot of my body scrub choker. How do you want women to feel when they're wearing your jewellery? I want them to feel bold and unique. Since my work doesnt necessarily fall under mainstream, I want my women to be risk-takers. Who aren't afraid to own their individuality without any inhibitions. Any piece of advice you would give to an aspiring jewellery artist? I dont have the backing of an exceptional amount of experience to give sound advice but what I would like to say is that never stop questioning and to be fearless. What works for me is the fact that I am very curious about my practice and averse to convention. This helps me fearlessly leap into territories that arent directly related to jewellery. Through this, I am also able to create without any predispositions informing my creative process. In my opinion, that is what helps you push boundaries.
naturally, the unknown makes me curious. It also lends me the childlike fascination I need, to question the unthinkable and the need to want to learn more. I also prefer everything as raw as it can be as it speaks volumes about the subject. Thus making it more personal and genuine, consequently, unique. Do you plan on opening up a store in the near future? As for now, I have no plans but who knows! Lastly, where do you see Hayalutfullah in another 5 years? In another 5 years, in whatever capacity it may be, I wish to be re-shaping the notion of what jewellery is. Through my work, I would like to be breaking barriers between jewellery and other forms of art and design. To sum it up, I wish for Haya Lutfullah to be able to provide jewellery enthusiasts, music and art lovers with a platform where they can see the integration of different disciplines. Much like how Haya Lutfullah would like to see the world, in harmony.
Our readers would like to know a little about the force behind Hayalutfullah. Tell us about your interests. My interest lies within anything that is natural. Since humans do not have all the answers to anything that occurs 2017

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I chose to go to Santorini in Greece as it was a place I had always wanted to visit.

Who did you travel with? A big group of friends. Where did you stay? There are two main places in Santorini; Oia and Fira. We stayed slightly away from the Fira city centre at a beautiful small boutique hotel. Suggest some amazing restaurants there?
travel diaries
Santorini looks like a post card and you can pick any of the restaurants at Fira or Oia as they have the most stunning view. From Greek food to Mediterranean to the freshest sea food they have it all! To name a few we ate at The Athenian house, La Maison, Catch bar and Terra Nera. Furthermore, we had the best gyros from this small cafe called Lucky's Souvlaki. Tell us about sites no one should miss? The tour of the Santorini wine yards is a must. There are a number of local wineries offering some delicious platters of cheese and the view is pure bliss. A trip to the red, black and white beach is something that

cannot be missed. Suggest places for a perfect night out? A perfect night out would start with dinner at one of the restaurants overlooking the most beautiful sunsets in the world. The party continues till dawn at downtown Fira so you can choose one of the jazz clubs or bars. The narrow cobblestone streets are all connected so we found really great places to hang out.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Santorini is the perfect place to unwind and relax it’s a picturesque little piece of heaven. You can relax by a pool with a book and get a massage with a view to die for!

Tips? You must rent out Atv's as it’ll be easy to go around the island. For the sunset tour on a yacht you should book it in advance. It takes you to the white, red and black beaches and then to the Oia sunset point. Be on time or actually before time for the tours as they leave you behind and don't refund your money!
