*ABOUT ME
When did you start this? Abey KHAO! started merely in the form of a pushcart in July 2016. I together with my siblings have taken this initiative to empower Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities because of the unemployment issues faced by them in Pakistan. I want to set an example for other businesses to lose their fear of hiring people with disabilities. What inspired you to start this? Being a son of Deaf Father, I'm blessed to know Sign Language by birth. My father has a small business of tailoring where he mostly hires Deaf tailors for his ease to communicate with them. Inspired by my father's business, I decided to start Abey Khao where Deaf/HOH communities feel proud of their identity and to create more opportunities for the unemployed youth. What hurdles did you face? I had very less budget to start a business but I did it by the support and contribution of my family members. By starting the business at such a young age without any experience, I faced a lot of discouragement by the people for this initiative and they considered it as a failure for not being able to study. I agree that I did not do well in my education but it does not mean that I am a complete failure.
ABEYKHAO! sheikh faizan raza is the main founder of abey khao. sheikh jawad ahmed raza and i are the co-founders and are helping him in this meaningful cause. 36

I neither hired any professional chef nor any team member got the professional training which was a great risk but my sister and I designed the menu and train the whole team, who on the other hand, manages to deliver it in the best way possible. I faced attitudinal barriers at the beginning stage as our stakeholders, mostly vendors, were taking unfair advantage of my disability. I have learned and gained a lot of experience in this short span of time. Who helped you? I have full support from my family from the very first day of the business. They always encouraged and supported me to implement the idea. I started this business with my siblings.
My eldest brother has his bachelors degree in finance and is also ACCA qualified. He manages all the finance of Abey Khao. Not only that he is also a social activist and well aware of the challenges faced by Deaf/HOH communities. My sister by profession is a bioscientist but cooking is her passion from the
very young age. She searches and tries different recipes at home and select the best one for abey khao's menu. My mother is also playing a huge role. Her double chocolate brownie is the most selling item at abey khao. I believe my family's support has made me what I am today. How can I forget my team who trusted
KHAO! all over Pakistan. It's not about selling food only rather it's more about changing the social perspective of communication between Deaf/HOH and Hearing Communities. Anything else you wanna share about Abey Khao? Abey Khao is the very first cafe in Pakistan run by Deaf and Hard of Hearing youth and is helping to break down communication barriers. The special thing about this place is that they only hire Deaf and Hard of hearing people. This is not a "Deaf Cafe", but it is certainly a comfortable and welcoming space for anyone. we not only offer scrumptious homemade snacks but also offer a wide range of fast food and drinks. To help customers communicate with staff and learn while they eat the wall is covered with Sign Language Alphabets. All the customers place their orders in Sign Language.
me and joined the venture I must say I did not have to do much they are so much talented. All I did is to give them a platform. Last but not the least, I also got a strong support from my cousins. They
voluntarily served Abey Kaho whenever I needed their help. Your plans for future? I wish to create more employment opportunities for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth by expanding Abey
“The signs that they display in their shop, the way they communicate with each other, how easy they make it for their customers to purchase and how effortless they pull everything off is itself a source of motivation for everyone who gazes upon them. What they have built is tantalizing and alluring and most of all full of purity and love,” shared one of Abey Khao’s customers. 2017

personally like, what their favorite colours are etc. This way it’s easier for us to work on those lines and then we add the Ilmoderno finesse whether it’s with our furniture pieces or designing a room. What are the most important elements you have to take into account when designing furniture? It has to be comfort and functionality for us, but most importantly it has to appeal to our client. However upon the request of our valuable clients we outsource furniture as well.

in the spotlight In conversation with the girls behind Ilmoderno - Mehr Omer and Samia Shahab. They talk about their love for interior designing and how they handle their clients. When designing a room what is the most important factor for you? Definitely space! We have to keep the size of the room in account and play accordingly. How do you design small spaces? In this case we opt for a lighter colour palette and fewer pieces, keeping it minimal yet impeccable. What is a good way of using lights in a room? Personally we love working around huge glass windows. Nothing beats the natural daylight and the essential Feng Shui elements that bring positivity in a home. Keeping that in view we recommend our clients to go for mood lighting and if they have some personal preferences we definitely take that into account. As interior designers what questions do you usually ask your clients? Our first question is always about the client. We are keen to know about them and their interests, what he/she 40

How did you get into interior designing? In reality every woman is blessed with aesthetics that she just needs to explore. One just needs to be passionate and headstrong enough to take their skills to the next level further stretching out far outside the boundaries of their domain. Describe a time when your client didn't like one of your designs? Well thankfully it hasn't happened yet! Depending on our client’s preference we provide them with our own furniture or outsource it from other designers to put together an impeccable room. Customer contentment is our priority! When designing a space what is more important budget or quality? The client comes to us because he/she is already aware of the nature of our work. Our team at Ilmoderno truly believes in the old school quote "value for money" and this is visibly seen in our services and products.
Is there any interior design style that you dislike? We get put off with bold bright colours used repeatedly. However, we love to play with colours adding only an accent here and there. Tell us about a time when u both disagreed on something? That has happened quite a few times and that's when we put down our ideas before our team and take their advice as they play an eminent role in bringing about an Ilmoderno product.
Who has been the main source of inspiration behind your passion for interior designing? Well there's a long list of renowned interior designers but Kelly Wearstler's designs tops our list. We have personally seen her work in high-end boutique hotels of the world. Then there is J louis Deniot - we admire him for his diversity of blending informal, bold and contemporary designs beautifully with an accent of history. Elizabeth Metcalfe is not any less; her subtle color palette yet the warmth that her designs reflect are unmatchable in home interiors.
List some of the future trends in interior designing for our readers? There's no end to that! All that we would like to tell them is stay true to themselves, style and times changes as their personal style is an expression of who they are. Every time you dress you are asserting a part of yourself- similarly dress your homes with elegance yet keep it modern and classy at the same time What are your future plans for Ilmoderno? We have quite a few things lined up for the future. We are taking them slowly but surely. 2017
