Did you stumble upon your career or was it something that you always wanted? It sort of just happened! I’m an accountant by profession and never thought I would be starting a cosmetics line! What was your “aha!” moment? My friends always used to ask me for lipsticks whenever I travelled from London to Pakistan. It made me realise there was a real gap in the market for good quality lipsticks which compliment our skin tones. Did you ever consider or experience a career change? As I mentioned earlier, I’m a Chartered Accountant by profession. Getting into cosmetics has been a huge career change! When was time you felt completely discouraged and how did you push through it? There was a point when we were planning the venture when I felt the amount of work was incredibly overwhelming. I have to say, support from my sister and husband pushed me through!
What is #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your bucket list? I would love to go for a meditation retreat. What does nobody tell you about being the boss? How much hard work goes into managing every detail! Name on boss lady that you admire and how she still inspires you? My mother, she can do absolutely anything!! Describe a day in your life As we’ve recently launched our product, these past few weeks have been consumed with work. I really need to get that work-life balance back!
MY FATHER HAS ALWAYS TAUGHT US TO NEVER LOOK BACK, ALWAYS FOCUS ON WHAT LIES AHEAD.
Complete this sentence: To me, a #BossLady is…” ..someone who believes in herself. What did you learn from your biggest failure? Failures are inevitable. I’ve learnt to use them as a stepping stone to grow.
What was the best advice that your mentor gave you? My father has always taught us to never look back, always focus on what lies ahead.
Which world leader would you most like to have dinner with? If I could go back in time, Mahrani Gayatri Devi. She was the epitome of a ‘Boss Lady’.
What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life? 1. Family 2. Friends 3. Peace
What advice would you give to young girls out there who have dreams and goals like yours? Never give up on yourself, you’re your biggest asset.

IJAAZAT A
couture collection that pays homage to the skilled craftsmanship of our culture with blends of uber chic design details. Collection was all-amped up with handmade textures. Pretty bows are used on the belts, at the back of the choli or embellished at the lehngas. In terms of color trends bright hues of reds, monochromatic magic of black and white and the most favoured palette of pastels dominate the collection. Moreover, rich fabrics like sumptuous silk, velvet and brocade, print marrying embroidery, intricately designed florals with peasant stripes and scallops. This trend extends to our embellishment material as well. Precious uncut stones threaded together with bright beads to create spectacular embellishment pieces that merges with a whimsical spirit. That is the beauty of Ali Xeeshan show - each piece is so lovely it can hold its own value. The collection is a pleasant surprise.

abid & mariam we speak to abid & mariam of wagging tongues productions, curators for the pakistani pavilion at the 2nd edition of london design biennale 2018. What does participating at the London Design Biennale mean to Pakistani art community and the country in general? The London Design Biennale is a highlight in the cultural calendar of the city. It not only showcases work by the most innovative designers from around the world but experiences a huge footfall of a diverse and international audience. In this day and age there is a great need to project soft power and to present unique stories from our country that celebrate our people. With so many biennales happening around the world, how is LDB different from the others? The natural footfall in London is greater and more diverse than most other cities hosting biennales. Traditionally most biennales centre around artists and architecture inviting participation from art galleries and architectural or design studios. London Design Biennale

is mostly country centric with a focus on design, it offers an opportunity to define and promote a design aspect of a people through their unique interpretation of the biennale theme, which was Emotional States for 2018. Tell us more about Wagging Tongues Productions? We are a husband and wife team living between London and Lahore. Between the two of us we have forty years of experience. Wagging Tongues Productions came about as a response to the constant barrage of negative rhetoric in the mainstream media. It is not possible to silence the contentious stories that feed sensationalism in the news but we can begin a parallel counter narrative. This is why we wanted to create a platform where we could realise and curate projects that would help create positive data points that Pakistanis around the world could own. What was the role of Wagging Tongues in creating ‘Aangan’? Having done three very successful children’s theatre plays in London, the project was brought to us by our strategic partner Suniya Qureshi. We felt it was a great opportunity to further the cause of building a narrative for Pakistan on a global stage. The project was conceptualised, pitched and curated by Wagging Tongues Productions along with a fantastic team of people in the UK and Pakistan. How difficult was it to get selected amongst the top 40 countries showcasing their art at LBD 18? We started the process in December 2017 and it was not until March when we our concept pitch was given the go ahead after being vetted by Dr Chris Turner, Artistic Director of the Biennale and Keeper of Design, Architecture and Digital at the Victoria and Albert Museum. We weren’t quite expecting it and it was a rather daunting prospect. But we put our best foot forward and here we are now almost a year later. Tell us about the Pakistani Pavilion? Who created it? Pakistan Pavilion picks at one of our country’s strengths, the textile industry, and puts female artisans, the unsung heroes, centre stage. The focus of Aangan is the artisan and her emotional relationship with her craft. Craft, the first avenue of executing design, is deeply connected to the human touch. The
hundred garments that form the 13 foot rising helix of the installation have been hand stitched and hand embroidered by female artisans spread through rural parts of Pakistan. Our strategic partner, Kaarvan Crafts Foundation, played a pivotal role in reaching and employing these artisans. We wanted the installation to be an immersive experience and pulled together a team to create computational art and film projections for the installation. Based on the storyboard by Mariam Majid, we worked with cinematographers and visual effect artists from Lahore and London. Computational artist Mehrbano Khattak from Rawalpindi created bespoke interactive graphics that respond to the movement of the viewer, this was then further enhanced by the haunting soundscape created by filmmaker Ahmed Nasir based in Poland. It was truly a global effort, coming together into one beautiful final rendition of the concept.
designers and organisations. A personal favourite is the Latvia Pavilion, a large green wall of glass, cooled to allow condensation which visitors can draw, write on. Another is the Greece Installation occupying the large central courtyard in Somerset House, a 26 metres long double wall that opens to accommodate a person walking through its centre. Other fun pavilions to visit are the Hong Kong scratch and sniff wallpaper room, the Australian lights installation illuminating all the colours of the spectrum. The stories behind each interpretation are equally intriguing.
What was the selection criterion for the women artisans involved in creating the Pakistani Pavilion? We were keen to employ women based in the rural areas specifically where groups worked together, this was important to project the concept of community which is closely linked to the idea of Aangan as a representation of our collective identity. It also gave us an opportunity to project stories of women that were not easily accessible. We felt it was important to allow them and their work recognition through this fabulous platform that would be open to the global gaze. This year’s theme is ‘Emotional States’, how does ‘Aangan’ demonstrate this theme? Of the hundred garments, one third had unique craft design and embroidery. We gave a free hand to the artisans to do as they pleased on the craft garments, presenting their hopes and dreams. This was further explored through film projections on the remaining two thirds that had no embroidery, directly inspired by the internal monologue of an artisan as she sits and crafts, a subtle peek into her inner world. We used metaphorical imagery in the film to encourage the visitors to participate and draw from their own associations and perceptions, the soundscape supports the imagery with the use of poetry recitation, traditional Pakistani musical instruments fused with contemporary sounds as well as a chanting hymn by the artisans themselves. Can you explain a bit how it is going to work and what kind of reaction–impact this installation should trigger? As you enter this beautifully large square room flanked by three arches on either end, you are greeted by this helix constructed by a flight of white muslin garments, stretched by armatures to look like shapes. This cascade pulsates and changes colour as the film projections translate vibrant patterns, recognisable moving imagery and landscapes onto this canvas. As you step into the centre of the helix you are engulfed by the soundscape of audible whispers, poetry, flute and tabla, and as you move a wave of words super-impose on the film projection following a viewer movements. We wanted to instigate a dialogue between the viewer and the installation piece as they try and denote meaning to the imagery or simply take in the visual and aural impact. Apart from the Pakistani pavilion, what other pavilions should visitors look forward to at this year’s LDB? There is some unbelievably fantastic work at the London Design Biennale and we are very honoured to share the platform with these amazing

ARIES (MAR. 21- APRIL 20) Stirring Mars, your guide planet, moves into Aquarius and your friendship zone on Monday and remains here until November 15, which could see you out and about and ready to have some fun. Community projects that may have stalled can pick up now. This is also a good time to get events organized and enjoy a few upbeat parties. TAURUS (APR. 21- MAY 21) If personal goals or ambitions seem to have been rather sporadic, things may be about to change. This week, firebrand Mars moves back into your career zone, giving you the energy and focus to get things done. It will remain here until November 15, giving you plenty of time to kick-start career moves, business projects, and anything else that is important. GEMINI (MAY 22-JUNE 21) It might be time to sample a few adventures as the urge to jet away somewhere exotic grabs hold. This could be due to the movement of sassy Mars into your sector of travel and far horizons on Monday. The coming weeks, until November 15, bring opportunities for long journeys and happy vacations, as well as study or attending workshops. This is the time to broaden your horizons by accepting opportunities that take you outside your comfort zone. CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 22) Finances and business affairs can begin to move in a more positive direction as lively Mars enters your zone of business and shared assets. Mars is beginning to get back into stride after its retro phase, and it will remain in this zone until November 15. LEO (JULY 23-AUG 22) Home and family affairs look to be in a positive place as convivial Venus moves deeper into the sector. If you’re thinking about entertaining or having guests to stay, the presence of lovely Venus here can make it a joy both for you and your visitors. VIRGO (AUG. 23 -SEPT. 23) You could be more eager to get back into your routines - and perhaps streamline them - so you can work smarter rather than harder. This could be due to determined Mars moving back into your lifestyle sector and reviving your enthusiasm. All kinds of routines could kick into place again, including work schedules and wellness. This might also be a time to experiment with new ways of doing the same things more quickly and efficiently. LIBRA (SEPT. 24 -OCT. 23) Aspects of your life could lighten up as sassy Mars moves into your leisure zone on Monday. With this fiery planet in such a dynamic sector, the coming weeks could see you accomplishing great things. Regarding your skills and creative talents, this is absolutely the time to showcase them and let others know what you can do. You could be equally enthusiastic about starting a new business or connecting with someone in a romantic way.
SCORPIO (OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) With both delectable Venus and happy-go-lucky Jupiter in your sign, things could seem to be going very well for you. This week, there are many reasons why you might benefit from various deals or opportunities. With upbeat Jupiter linking to powerful Pluto in your communication sector, discussions with someone who has influence could be very profitable. And with the sun and chatty Mercury in your networking zone involved in the mix, the sky could be the limit. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 23 -DEC. 21) With fiery Mars moving into your communication sector, the firebrand qualities of this planet could give you the courage to set key plans in motion. After a delay, you might now be very eager to get moving. And since sobering Saturn turned direct in your sector of finance and values last week, your progress now looks more assured than ever. CAPRICORN (DEC 22.- JAN. 20) If you have friends in high places, they could be very useful to you over the week ahead.
