IN THE SPOTLIGHT
THE CRUSADER WITH A CAMERA samar minallah khan is an anthropologist and a filmmaker who uses culture and innovative tools for advocating women’s right!
What attracted you towards filmmaking? Earlier, I would write for different newspapers and magazine. I switched the medium to film because of the strong potential it has as an advocacy tool. Your debut documentary “Swara — A Bridge Over Troubled Waters” led to a law being passed against compensation marriages. How did you decide upon that topic for your first documentary? Back in 2003, I made the documentary, "Swara-A Bridge Over Troubled Waters" to record voices and testimonies of girls and women who were given in compensation to end disputes. I was compelled to document these voices because it seemed unacceptable. How could a sister or a daughter pay the price of a murder committed by her father, brother or uncle? In order to understand the extent of the tradition, I had to travel to the remotest areas to record stories of compensation marriages. Why do you feel so strongly about your stance? There was an 11 year old girl in a small village in Matta. She said that she had been given as Swara and she could not

do anything to save herself. Her words were, "Ma ba sa karay oo?" (What could I do?). That is when I decided to take such voices to our decision makers and policy makers. How can filmmaking as a medium be used to promote change in the society? The documentary helped in generating a dialogue around the issue. It was screened for legislators, shown on different television channels, screened at Press Clubs. The law was amended in 2004. Now, according to PPC-310-A, compensation marriage has become a criminal offence. Back in 2004, Mansoor Ali Shah and his team helped me file a Public Interest Litigation in the Supreme Court. The documentary was used as evidence. The case went on for a decade, leading to saving more than 70 minor girls from across Pakistan. This whole experience led me to believe in the power of film. How do you pick a subject for your documentaries? Issues that are close to my heart are the ones I want to work on. I have made documentaries on Child Domestic Labor, Forced Marriages among the “diaspora” community, human trafficking, impact of conflict on women and children and many more.
parcel of the nature of my work. You have received numerous awards locally and internationally. How has that recognition helped in your cause? It is encouraging to be recognised for your work and efforts. However, it is wonderful when the local audiences give a positive feedback. What do you want the world to know about your cause? I want the world to remember me as someone who addressed issues empathetically, sensitively and truthfully. What event motivated you to become a mentor? I can’t think of any one moment. There have been many that keep me going. One was when I went to tell a father that the jirga had decided not to give his daughter Marina in marriage for a crime committed by her uncle. The father from a small village in Mardan got overwhelmed with emotions. Such moments of joy are always worth all the challenges one faces.
Do you find it difficult to get through to the locals especially the women for your documentaries? Yes, it is difficult but then one has to be patient. One can't simply go with a camera into the rural communities. First step is to build a relationship based on trust so that people are comfortable speaking in front of the camera. There are many women and girls who refuse to speak in front of a camera. One has to respect the concerns of those who are being interviewed. What have you sacrificed (both personally and professionally) at each stage of your career? I have had to face a lot of challenges but I tend not to give too much attention to that part of my work. I always knew it was part and
You have recently recruited truck artists and owners under the Asian Development Project’s Legal Literacy for Women in Punjab initiative to paint women empowerment messages on their trucks. Tell us about that Traditional truck art in Pakistan has always been used as a medium to convey interesting poetry. I have been working with the truck artists for the past few years. Convincing them to paint positive, empowering images and messages related to the rights of women. I believe that in order to reach out to the audience at the grass root level it is important to find innovative means and tools that resonate with them and their traditions. Trucks are like moving bill-boards. A message travels from one part of Pakistan to another. What could be a more effective tool! What work has given you the greatest satisfaction in life? The fact that I am able to work in the rural areas, reaching out to people that matter makes it all worth -while. My audience has always been the rural population. Their positive feedback gives me more strength and encouragement. What are your future projects? I am working on a documentary that I hope to complete soon and am going to continue working with the truck artists. One truck at a time! What advice would you give to young women who are passionate about filmmaking? Give your best to whatever you are doing and do it with love.
