ABOUT ME

BEHIND

THE ARTIST

T

Tell us a little about your background in art? I graduated from Parsons The New School for Design in 2015, had my work displayed at Parsons’ Gallery in 2013, 2014 and 2015. I’ve explored multiple different media-types and a combination of styles including street, pop, conceptual and appropriation art. The tying thread between the aesthetics

has been the exploration of contemporary desires and obsessions with social norms, the influence of media on the general public, commerce, and fame disguised under childlike expressionism. My art critique and original work has been published in MoMA’s Design & Violence Book, The New York Times, T-style magazine, The Wild

Magazine, amongst others. Did you always want to be an artist? I wanted to be (in chronological order): An astronaut, an artist, a doctor, an accountant, a Chinioti child-bride, a writer, a political commentator and an artist.

In conversation with the supremely talented, Hussain Salahuddin, the new artist on the block who is already making his mark in the art industry. A young man with a great sense of humour and magic on his fingertips who is ready to take over the world of art!

30

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2018

How is your personality reflected in your work? My work is loud, attention-seeking and unapologetic... wait, what was the question? Can you remember the first painting you ever made? Where is it now? The very first painting I ever made is a reminder of how art teachers in primary schooling systems in Pakistan are failing us. My teacher asked me to “replicate Monet’s Water Lilies”. Which she then, to feed her own ego, proceeded to finish for me because she could do it better (I was 9). It’s a reminder of how art is still not valued and its strong effect on culture is disregarded by closed-minded, culturally-daft, middle-aged men and women that sit in these positions and have the direct ability to nurture or disregard the interests and talents of the next generations of our country. Which is more important to you, the subject of your painting, or the way it is executed? To me a beautifully complex subject with a lack-luster execution is not satisfying. I believe both the subject and the reflection of the subject in the execution are vital at the risk of sounding shallow. (I am shallow, we all are.) Tell us about one of your paintings that you are deeply attached to and why? It’s not a painting but it’s my first drawing. It was a little ship that I scribbled on a little piece of paper that looked like a fish. After failed attempts to convince me to settle for a Liberal Arts degree over a Design Degree, my mom gave it to me after I graduated from Parsons, proving that she knew it was the right decision all along. How do u feel when you are letting your emotions loose on the canvas? If you know, you know! People claim to turn to art to release and express their emotions. New York however has made me very comfortable with a stressful and anxiety-driven lifestyle. 2018

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

31

So I have a few people that message me or check-in on how far I’ve gotten with a certain painting to keep me on track and stress me out. How has your practice changed over time? Growing up, the standard of “perfection” here was replicating photo-realistic imagery to prove that I’m “talented” or that I’m “an artist”. Originality or a non-conformist aesthetic wasn’t something that was rewarded. Now I paint like a 6 yearold as a response to growing up with that pressure. (The horrible portrait of myself I quickly made for your Instagram post is proof of that) . What art do you most identify with? Portraits! Not mine, but of strangers from another time. There’s nothing more intimate or narrative driven than someone capturing someone permanently in an image, and how their personal biases towards that person can be reflected in the creative decisions (intentionally or unintentionally). What memorable responses have you had to your work? “There could be a 100 people in a room and 99 don’t believe in you but all it takes is one - and that for me is Bradley Cooper.” Name three artists you’d like to be compared to. InshAllah - Marcel Duchamp, Damien Hirst & Kehinde Wiley! Absolute geniuses, I tell you. How do you overcome creative blocks? It’s actually fairly simple. I panic, my mother reassures me that “Nazar lag gayee hai” and then I wait till the evil eye is warded off and inspiration strikes. What advice do you have for aspiring artists? Beta why don’t you become a doctor or something? What is this art shart? Such a waste. All Jokes aside. Do not listen

32

to anyone that motivates you or de-motivates you. If you’re an artist, you’ll know in your heart that it’s what you should be doing. However, it’s the most rewarding feeling to be able to create work that you enjoy, that is true to your aesthetic and that can resonate with others. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt over time is that art is bougie, be a designer - not an artist. Design is a manipulation tool and once you’re aware of it, it’s hard to deny its power. (Mic drop. Applause. Thank you and goodbye!)

STUDIO S The classic style enthusiast, Seher Tareen of Studio S has flabbergasted everyone with her brilliant “Boss Lady” collection this year. A collection designed for the woman of today; whether a college student or graduate entering the workforce, whether a working professional or a stay at home mom, we as women can choose to do whatever we want and wear it with pride. As Seher quoted: “On a personal level, I was tired of the hyper feminine three piece printed lawns being the only option for women. I wanted to provide the Pakistani woman with an alternative way of power dressing. I believe that the way we dress has an impact on the way we feel. So the idea was to change the way we dress and unleash our inner BOSS LADIES!” fas h i on awards 2 0 1 8

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our section, planes, trains & automobiles! Best food: Grab some seafood street food at Barba. Octopus burgers, tempura prawns, local oysters – if you’re a fan of fish and seafood then a meal at Barba is a must. The small familyrun restaurant has a lovely vibe and a great atmosphere.

You love your facts and figures, but you’re craving more fantasy, wonder, and creativity in your life. Follow your heart to the more beautiful and spiritual side of things. Is it time for a massage? Schedule self-care, pampering, and recharging in luxury this weekend. LIBRA (SEPT. 24 -OCT. 23) It’s a social open house for you, Libra! The more, the merrier when it comes to family and friends this week—you’ll love how the atmosphere’s rich with connection. The weekend’s all about you! The moon in Libra places your happiness at the top of the universe’s priority list, so do what makes you happy.

SCORPIO (OCT. 24 - NOV. 22) How can you be of service, Scorpio? You want to help in a meaningful way this week, so follow your intuition to the right places that could use your special something.
