Team Paperazzi headed over to the newly renovated Hoagies Restaurant in Karachi to try their good old comfort food. Everything on the menu is made fresh to order, with their freshly baked breads and sauces made in-house. The restaurant has also recently launched a night of live music to be enjoyed alongside some great food. Hoagies is truly our new favorite spot to be!

SAMEEN FARRUKH I absolutely love love this black velvet angrakha and tulip shalwar. I wanted it to be simple yet graceful. The true star of the outfit is the beautiful cut of the shirt with a tinge of gold with lovely finesse which adds the touch of perfection to the whole outfit.

MARYAM ASIM KHAN Totally in love with this traditional yet chic velvet ensemble paired with jamawar. The gold khussas popped up the overall look even more. The plus point of this outfit is that it can be worn formally as well casually.

DANIA ALI In my opinion, velvet and jamawar are the perfect winter fabrics. They are simultaneously elegant and opulent. I paired this velvet Kurta with its matching jamawar pants (just look at the jamawar edging!!). I originally planned on wearing a simple gold chain but could not resist this chunky choker that totally topped off this look.

ZAINAB RAZA I chose to pair this Lajwanti velvet gown with gold jamawar pants. The tail at the back gives an extra fancy look to this simple outfit which is one specific detail that I love the most. I wore my absolutely favourite pearl strings with it, and white heels. Lajwanti is my go to place, always and forever!

When and why did you decide to become a fashion designer? I was born with a love for art & fashion. Since a young age I was passionate about art, so I studied fine art before I got my degree in fashion design. I decided to become a designer because I love the journey of converting art from being an abstraction, into a wearable piece of clothing. Fashion is my way of creatively expressing what I learn from art. I see fashion and art as a language all on its own. You get to control how you are distinguished and what you communicate. It is individual and personal and that is the transformative quality of fashion & art that I love!

BEHIND THE DESIGNER

In conversation with Sonia Shahid an aspiring, young fashion designer with dreams of building her own animal shelter in the future. ABOUT ME!

Who has been your biggest inspiration and why? Apart from being inspired by artists or painters, Phoebe Philo has always been an inspiration for me! She changed the way women dressed by recognizing and respecting that women don’t have to wear their power in a way that's loud, or openly lewd. I admire Philo for being an outspoken feminist who always criticises the way the female body is portrayed in this industry and I feel that her clothes empower women by letting them have control. Tell us about a time when you had to deal with a difficult client. What was the situation and how did you react?

launch a collection? I think there is no fixed creative process before I launch a collection. And there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to approach design. Usually I do start with seeking inspiration and setting a mood for my collection, then move on to the sketches, finding the right fabrics to go with the feel, but at times I skip all the steps and just sketch a design that’s popped in my head or find a fabric that I can instantly picture designed in a certain way. What’s your motto or the advice you live by? Do what you love, and never let anyone else tell you otherwise.

I haven’t come across a difficult client as such yet, but the most difficult situation I came across was when one of my clients had a last minute fitting issue and since she had to wear the clothes to an event, I had a hard time getting a new outfit made to her size on such short notice and on a weekend but I managed to get it done. Tell us about your educational background. I went to LGS 55 main (Lahore Grammar School) from pre-school to A’level and then I got my bachelors degree in Fashion Design from BNU. If you weren’t a designer, what would you be doing right now? Veterinary doctor. Which design house do you look up to and why? Céline is one of the design houses that I look up to for their brilliant design aesthetic. I think their designs are confident, straightforward & powerful. They’re true to the phrase “less is more” and I think no other design house defines the modern sense of comfort with more authority than Céline.

What is your favourite song to belt out at in the car? My all time favourite ‘Lady (Hear Me Tonight) - Modjo’ Describe your personal style. Contemporary, minimal and feminine. What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line? I got all kinds of advices and opinions when I was starting my own line. People kept telling me it’s too early to take a big jump but I was not afraid at all because I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Maya Angelou said “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.” I don’t think there is any set age to start your own work, just do it when you feel confident about it. Ten years from now you will be… Running my fashion house alongside my animal shelter that I wish to build in the near future.

What is your creative process before you 2019
