8 Contemporary Artists to Watch

With the 56th Venice Biennale in full swing, and Pakistani art in high demand all over the world, it’s time to begin the search for new works from both emerging and established talent. To make the hunt a little easier, we present to you compelling contemporary artists who should be on your radar!

Heraa Khan Struck by the constraints of Lahori society, Heraa Khan’s work comments on the highly status conscious class present in our very own Lahore. Having been trained as a Mughal and Persian miniature painter, Heraa attempts to experiment, expand and blur the definition and boundaries of miniature and its centuries old technique. Her work is a commentary on our consumer-ridden lifestyles, and is an expression of the amusement and empathy that such situations invoke in her.

sarah ahmed

mumtaz

Sarah Mumtaz’s work is an amalgam of what she is in contradiction to how society perceives her. Conceptually and technically, her work reflects her endeavors to think outside the box and to step out of her shell as an individual. She continues to deconstruct the prevalent concepts of beauty and makes a powerful statement reflecting the circumstances which have let her to mold herself as a strong, independent individual.

arslan naqvi

Fariha Taj Fariha Taj, a resident of Karachi, uses the strong concept of cable wires in her work. She believes that the repetition of these wires gives her the feeling of association and connection among the places in her city. Her work is a reflection of her daily encounters in the city, the structure of the roads and the colours in the city, to reflect the fading beauty of Karachi. 24

PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE

2015

Naqvi’s work captures the emotions of street children extremely well in his work. He has struck by the pain, vulnerability and helplessness these children feel. In his paintings, he attempts to immortalize their dark childhood.

anum lasharie Anum Lasharie’s work portrays female characters from varying backgrounds. In her work, she depicts both the solitude and the bipolarity of the existence of the human beings. She questions the relationship between physical comfort and peace of mind, and studies how the environment effects this state of mind. She also works with the ideas of uncertainty and anxiety, in an attempt to capture the associated feelings in that state of mind. Her work is a commentary on the fragility of life, the feeling of abandonment and the fake sense of control.

ahmed paracha Deaf by birth, Ahmed Paracha tells us how the phrase “bounded but strong” explains his life. Bound by the chains of deaf and dumbness, the canvas is where Ahmed is able to express himself without any limitations. His subjects, choice of colours and medium are all a commentary on the difficulties he faces on a daily basis and the hope he has to achieve knowledge and push himself beyond his boundaries. He tells us “if there is a hope, there is a way of successful life”.

zahrah ehsan Zahrah’s work demonstrates the notion of the opposite gender and further elaborates on how they define us as women and how women define men. Her work explores the observation which we rely on to define a person’s gender. Her paintings are not only commenting on the psychological constructs placed on individuals by society, but also embrace the idea by using vibrant, attractive colors to lure viewers like how they would in reality.

sidra asim Sidra’s paintings are a response to the people she is surrounded by and their behavior! By observing the mannerisms of people, and their interactions with people and society in general, she tries to capture these fleeting fragments of reality in her work. Best explained in a few words, Sidra’s work is “revisions of life observed”. 2015

Computer Science Engineering but I just couldn't envision doing that my whole life with the kind of interests I had. I later changed my major and did my Bachelors in Communications, Advertising from the University of Texas in Arlington. How did you become interested in Modeling? As a child i had interest in fashion, observing and then sketching faces and designing was always a hobby. I used to experiment with wacky hairstyles and make-up looks on myself which always gave my parents and siblings something to laugh about from day to day. As I grew up I guess I realized I was constantly observing different people and their looks and gestures. This lead to my interest in modeling and acting both at a young age. Simultaneously my sister Zara started modeling and this gave me more of a chance to observe her and the environment she was working in. When I was old enough and finally got an offer to do it professionally I guess my body language and expressions were on point so it just took off from there.

ABOUT ME:

hira tareen Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am an actress, model, DJ, a visual designer as well as a creative consultant/stylist on various projects. Recently I have also launched a clothing brand by the name of ICON Karachi. Tell us about your education: Have you attended any fashion modeling courses as well? If you consider watching every episode of America's Next Top Model 'modeling courses' then sure. No I haven't attended any modeling courses but I did take an 8 week acting course in Dallas. Aside from that my major in university was initially 26

What are your goals as a model? What are your plans for the next 5 years? My goal as far as modeling is concerned is to just continue doing good work and serve as a role model for other talented and educated girls who want to break into this field. The plan for the next five years is to build my personal brand even further so people start to understand me and why I make certain choices when it comes to my work. Two models can never be friends. How true is this saying? Models are people and two people are very capable of becoming friends regardless of what they do. I do agree however that very rarely can you become true friends with another person who is quite apparently going after the SAME piece of the pie as you, whether the two people are models, designers, financial analysts or doctors. If a field is competitive, then it's better to realize the conflict of interest and not make big friendship claims if you know you're gonna jump at the first chance to steal a bite of something from your so-called friend.

We've always heard models starve themselves. Do you eat nutritiously? How often do you exercise or go to the gym? How can we possibly starve ourselves when we are served biryani and club sandwiches backstage at fashion weeks? Well I don't know about the other girls but I eat pretty much everything. I just try to stay away from junk food and sodas and I control my portions. And while I would like to work out more often, I occasionally do these 10 minute workouts that I have recently found on this channel on youtube called 'popsugarfitness'. It's awesome stuff, I have been telling everyone about it and you guys must try it out too! Who is your favourite photographer and designer to work with and why? I have really liked working with Zara Tareen, Alee Hasan, Qasim Badshah and recently Abdullah Haris. They all have a different styles of working but that's what I like. But because Zara Tareen is my sister and she was the first one to ever start photographing me, she is the one who knows how to capture me the best. There are so many designers whose work I admire but when it comes to photo shoots I like the creative freedom Adnan Pardesy provides me because he has faith and trust in what I do and what I am about. Plus I love the edge and femininity his clothing has which always makes for a great editorial.

Director at JCPenney Headquarters in Dallas. I was designing their user experience on their e-commerce platform jcp. com as well as occasionally styling special project photo shots for them. Before that I worked for Hotels.com as a Creative Designer and also did a lot of branding for various start-ups in Silicon Valley. Aside from all the visual design, creative consultation and styling gigs I am a music addict and love mixing so I do live DJ gigs from time to time. Recently I have also launched a clothing brand called ICON Karachi that I am very excited about. It is a brand that offers effortless, quirky, utilitarian, minimalistic and timeless clothing made in Pakistan with a global appeal at an affordable price, but that's a different interview altogether :) People must think that I do a lot of different things but the one thing that ties in all the different things I do is creative expression and a sense of aesthetics. For me that is my passion whether I use that skill in modeling, acting, mixing music or building a brand. Finally, what advice would you give to young girls who are trying to take up modeling as a career? Do your research, work hard, be good, stay healthy (because that makes you beautiful,) know your worth and don't sell yourself short.

We've heard you're multi talented. What else do you do besides modeling? As I mentioned above that besides being a Model, I am also an Actor, DJ and Creative Director. Before moving to Pakistan in 2010 I was an Interactive Art

Nailsinc Primrose Hill Walk Luxe Boho:

6

I am obsessed with chunky glitter this season! These pastel shades would look great paired with a white base or even just on their own for something a little different.

opi dark side of the moon:

7

OPI has come out with an awesome 50 Shades of Grey collection and the greys are to die for! This is one of my favorite shades from the collection - I would pair it with a silver glitter accent nail and top it off with a matt top coat.

8

seche vite top coat:

Now I know this isn’t really a color, but I think any nailpolish collection is incomplete without a good top coat. I swear by this one by Seche Vite. It dries in seconds and stays shiny till the day i take it off! If I’m not feeling a color, I just top my nails with this top coat to give it a finished look.

planes, trains & automobiles

Travelling is great fun! You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you choose to go and why? I went to Africa, particularly to Zambia (Lusaka) and Tanzania ( dar es salam, arusha, ngorongoro crater, zanzaibar) Who did you travel with? My fellow adventurer, Khitab Khan!

it’s even got elephants roaming through the reception area! During our trip to Victoria Falls in Livingstone we stayed at the David Livingstone Safari Lodge which has the most breathtaking views. In Tanzania we basically just backpacked to these hostels that were close to the ngorogoro crater while in Zanzibar we went to scuba and since the hotels are linked to the scuba company, we stayed at this gorgeous place right on the beach.

Where did you stay? We were visiting Khitab’s best friend from college, Karan and his wife Meera so we stayed with them in What are the best shopping spots there? Lusaka. We also went to South Luangwa for our safari I think this may have been the first trip where I had no where we stayed at the Mfwe Lodge (it’s so stunning) interest in shopping! There’s a couple of shops where

Suggest some amazing restaurants there? Marlin and Dolphin- I have to admit I don’t have a taste for African food so it was mostly gora khana we got at the lodges etc.

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? So the game drives are usually all day and this one day we woke up, had breakfast around 6 am and left immediately. We were lucky enough to spot elephants, hyenas, giraffes, hippos, alligators, lions, jaguars, wilder beast, zebras, foxes and what not but after the first half (depending on your tour guide) I remember we set up a camp side lunch right in the middle of the savannah!! surrounded by all these precious beings talking and laughing with these strangers soaking in the beauty of being there and the whole day ended with a campfire around the lodge live music and dancing under the stars. I’m probably not explaining it well enough but I’ll never forget that day.

Tell us about the sights noone should miss out on Zanzibar for scuba diving. I remember just coming up from my dive and was just in time to catch my husband swimming with the dolphins- its magical! The game drives are just breathtaking I saw a jaguar and her baby while at the mfwe lodge not to mention a huge elephant outside my lodge when I opened my door one morning! You have to go to Victoria falls and to Ngorogoro it’s right out of the Lion king- the animals are so close you could touch them (you’re not allowed but still!) We also went for a walk with lions I thought they’d be cuddly babies but they were quite big actually and while you are at it just throw in every sunset every evening doesn’t matter where you arethe beauty is just UNREAL!

Suggest places for a perfect night out Hands down the Lusaka motor club if you’re into partying they usually have guest appearances for player

Finally, any tips? YES- GO! NOW! Also, I went in October and would advise anyone else going during that time to keep something warm with them the evenings get very chilly often cold out in the open while the days are boiling hot. Also, keep US dollars but notes issued after 2000 they don’t accept anything else.

Monday is not the sort of day when you get much done. And the more you don’t get done, the more frustrated you feel. But here’s something you can do, no matter the circumstances: flatter someone else with attention. That’s a good ‘when in doubt’ thing to do. Tuesday and Wednesday, you aren’t in doubt about anything. You’re the first person to think of the great idea and the first person at the party -- in any situation, you’re first. Thursday and Friday, you hold back a little bit. You have to catch your breath. This weekend, catch up with people over email. You might get a flirtatious note from someone.

Suddenly, on Monday, a solution to a problem that’s been bugging you for a while dawns on you. Run it by a friend and they’ll most likely endorse it. You sleep on it, and on Tuesday and Wednesday, you’re not so sure it’s so brilliant after all. You think things through constantly -- your world almost can’t bear the weight of all your thinking -- but Thursday and Friday, all thinking goes out the window. You’re in the presence of someone beautiful, and you can’t help yourself but be totally distracted. Saturday and Sunday, someone wants you to sign some paperwork, but you can’t be bothered.

Monday is hard to get a handle on. You can tell what people are saying and you know what things you have to get done, but you almost feel like you’re walking around in a dream. It doesn’t feel disconcerting, but you feel distant. Tuesday and Wednesday help the world to solidify again -- mostly thanks to a good chat with a friend. It’s amazing how much friends can help. Thursday and Friday you’re conducting a number of secret missions. You’re collecting facts -- possibly on a potential love interest or future business partner. It’s fun. Saturday and Sunday are full of new faces.

Monday isn’t great for any tasks involving minute details, but it’s perfect for big-picture stuff. Plus, you’re swimming in free time. If a friend asks for help, definitely do it. Even if they don’t ask for help but you see there’s something you could do that would make their day, go for it. Tuesday and Wednesday you’re thinking quickly (and possibly talking quickly -- careful not to put your foot in your mouth!) but Thursday and Friday are easygoing. You might find yourself at a dinner party with some fascinating people. It’s time to come out of your shell. This weekend, surprise someone.

leo

virgo

libra

scorpio

Keep your money in your wallet on Monday. As much as you’d love to be richer than you are, the make-moneyquick scheme that catches your attention this week isn’t going to bring that about. You’re better off applying your energy to creative pursuits (where the chances of making quick money are pretty much nil). Tuesday or Wednesday, you have a brief conversation with someone that radically alters your opinion of something. Thursday or Friday, you are named ‘Employee of the Month’ (or else you’re given some other deserved but embarrassing attention). This weekend, be around friends.

It’s easy to see where a friend is going wrong on Monday, but that doesn’t mean you should weigh in with your inexpert advice. Consider all the people already giving your friend advice, and the fact that none of them really knows what they’re talking about. Be a supportive, noncritical pal. It’s really a no-brainer. Tuesday and Wednesday, the people around you seem intent on being combative, but you have a sense of higher calling. You barely participate in the proceedings. Thursday and Friday are more about fun than work -- try a restaurant you’ve never been to. The weekend is work-heavy

Keep your attention on the small things on Monday, and the bigger issues will sort themselves out. On Tuesday and Wednesday, taking extra care with your relationships is important. Give anyone you’re talking to 10 percent more energy and attention than you usually would. If you’re sending an email, take the time to make it funny and sweet. Thursday and Friday, watch out for overindulging -- speaking of sweet -- and try to remain neutral territory between two friends in the throes of a dispute. Saturday and Sunday are dual-natured.

Monday is easily the best day of your week -- the most fun, the most romantic, the most creative -- so throw your all into it. That’s not to say that Tuesday and Wednesday don’t have great things to offer, too, but they’re days on the edge. A minor conflict could become ugly at this time. Thursday and Friday, don’t worry about any of your goals; instead, focus on the people around you. Figure out who you want by your side and make it known. Your loyalty will endear them to you. Saturday and Sunday, as much as a business opportunity is tempting, something in you just knows it’s not the right time.

You wish you could just take off like a bird on Monday. You want to flap your wings and fly high over everyone, but you can’t get off the ground. You have a yearning to expand your horizons, but it’s not going to happen like that. Tuesday and Wednesday, you’re a lot more comfortable in the here and now. Masculine energy figures strongly. So does creativity, productivity and romance. Thursday and Friday, the key to success is communication. Even if something goes embarrassingly awry, be upfront about it. Saturday and Sunday, there’s a lot going on, but the conversations in between interest you most.

You sit down to write an email on Monday, an email you’ve been nervous about writing, and somehow it comes out incredibly well: funny, self-deprecating, supportive and compassionate. Only a creative mind like yours could create an email like that. Tuesday and Wednesday provide no outlets for your creativity -- your family is top of mind, and mostly you’re worrying about them. But Thursday and Friday find you on an adventure not unlike camp. Your friends are involved, creativity is involved and romance is likely. Awesome! This weekend, check in with a pal who needs you.

You’re a big-picture thinker, especially on Monday, and you have the sense that there will come a time when you won’t have to worry about money. Unfortunately that time hasn’t quite arrived yet. Put yourself first, but don’t spend a bunch of money on yourself. Tuesday and Wednesday, your mind is expanding into fields of interest you know almost nothing about. It makes your brain tingle to be around someone who knows a bunch about something you don’t, so make it happen. Thursday and Friday, you make a discovery that lights you up like a light bulb. Your weekend is incredibly romantic.

You’re in a process of transformation on Monday, but somehow you’re not nervous about it. Change is always a weird thing, even when it feels right, so you’d be smart to take a friend out to lunch and just talk about it. You’ll be glad you did, because Tuesday and Wednesday plunge you into a sudden fog of uncertainty. Thursday and Friday, you’re still a bit disoriented, but writing down you feelings in an email to someone gives you a startling amount of clarity. Your own words weirdly give you something to hold onto. This weekend, take it easy and don’t analyze things too much.
