Tell us a little about your brand, Syeda Amera? When & How did it start? Elegant and glamorous is what Syeda Amera is all about. It is the first Pakistani brand to have ventured into international shows in Spain, London, New York, Sydney and now in the city of lights, Paris. Universally admired for its exquisite couture creations and elegant gowns, the brand has definitely made a mark in the fashion world. I never explored it deeply until 2008 when, at the outset, I started off by designing apparels for myself which were greatly appreciated amongst my family and friends and most prominently my dear friends from the media. What is your collection based on? My SS ’16 collection is a magical combination of innovative overlapping bandage detailed cropped tops complimenting boot cut style pants and unexpected silhouettes including a tailored jumpsuit with intricately patterned lace with sequins and sleeves that flow down the sides. Keeping in mind the confidently exciting city of Paris, the city that is famous for not only being the city of lights but is known for its extremely fearless nature of fashion lifestyle. Why did you decide to become a fashion designer? Is it your passion? Ever since I was child I wanted to become a designer. I never feel I had to decide to become a designer. It just seemed natural to want to translate my ideas into fashion. My love for fashion and glamour brought me into this profession. Of course, it is my passion. Are you from a fashion school? Or did you have the in-born creativity in you? My interest in designing started at a very young age and it was not pre-arranged as such. I am a self-taught designer and I think the talent was there since the very beginning but to polish my skills I acquired my fashion education from London School of Fashion, Sota School of Arts Singapore and TFWA World Exhibition.

What's your favourite part about being a fashion designer? Well, it is difficult to pick the ‘favourite’ part. But what I enjoy the most is the process when I translate my drawings into a real piece. I enjoy overcoming the little challenges I face with the materials and design technicalities then watching your creativity come to life. Being a fresh designer in this industry. Do you feel there is a lot of competition? “It is challenging to have healthy competition as it derives one to do better”. I believe competition has definitely facilitated in raising the fashion standards in Pakistan and I have always taken competition positively. It has helped me to bring the best out of me. Tell us a little about your showcase. How was the experience? The experience was miraculous. It all started from the day before

the show at the VIP launch dinner of J Summer Fashion Show 2016 on top of Bateaux Mouches glass cruise on the Siene River in front of the Eiffel Tower that the honorable chief guest, Jessica Minh Anh, called me on stage and presented an award for the most talented young international designer. It is a dream come true to win an award in the fashion capital, where there were countless names from the international fashion fraternity praising my work. Showcasing on the most luxurious glass cruise on the Siene River against the breath-taking LIVE backdrop of Paris was phenomenal experience. The natural backdrop of the show included architectural wonders such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Louvre and the 37 bridges. We are overwhelmed by the response we have received for the show as it gets better each time. Talking to the media after the show Jessica Minh Anh said “I am drawn to Syeda Amera’s artistic usage of innovative textures, daring cuts and architectural detailing. With her new stunning collection inspired by the beauty of Paris, Syeda Amera has impressed the fashion capital while setting a shinning example for the new generation od designers in Pakistan.” It feels pride to represent Pakistan and give a positive image of my country at such a level among designers from all over the world. Tell us a little about your main source of inspiration in your collection? Derived from the same ambition that built the Eiffel Tower, my collection tries to capture the same objective and creates looks that mix the artistic movements of textures within cloth with some daring cuts of fashion. Using the intricate architectural structure of the Eiffel Tower and its decorative grill work arches, the collection is crafted to reflect the design aesthetics of the Eiffel Tower, while keeping in mind the glitz and glamour of the Parisian life style. Our readers would like to know a little about your personal life. When not at work, what are you mostly engaged in? If not work, I love spending time with my family. Most importantly, if you weren't a fashion designer. What else would you be? Someone related to the field of arts and design as creativity runs in the family. What do you hope to have achieved in the industry, 10 years from now? I would like to expand and grow my brand and for it to be successful brand available worldwide as I want to have more visibility. I would love to have more international clients and of course I would be travelling the world. Lastly, What advice would you give to a younger you? Determination and dedication is what takes you a long way. Keep your dreams alive and remember all things are possible for those who do not give up. 2016

TOOBA: For my day look I pulled out my ripped jeans and coach trainers and matched it with my Jimmy Choo cross shoulder clutch. I wore my Dior glasses and had my hair tied up in a knot! That's day for me - fun and casual. In the evening I paired this top with formal white pants and beige heels. I opened my hair and changed my lip colours to a darker shade of pink. MUGHALAR: I really liked this breezy chiffon top and keeping the hot summer in mind I wanted to keep it loose and light so I paired a white tank top and pants with it. For the evening I wanted a dressier look so went a shade darker on the lipstick. I wore the pants that came with the outfit and dressed it up further with chunky earrings, a burgundy clutch and Michael Kors heels. 2016

For the second day look: it was a beautiful cut work jacket that I paired with my dark blue jeans and trainers and matched it with my Chanel! For my night look, I changed my hair to a slightly formal look and wore formal pants, black heels and a Bottega clutch.

I paired this dark embroidered kaftan with rolled up jeans and Tommy Hilfiger wedges to keep it casual. I completed the look with a Ferragamo denim bag and a Swarovski bracelet. For an evening look, I changed into LSM Collection by Zainab Chottani’s embroidered pants along with really high Jimmy Choo heels and a Chloe clutch. I kept the hair straight and away from the face and brightened my lipstick. Photography: Models: Tooba Siddiqui & Mulghalar Hussain Hair & makeup: Sabs the Salon

FAHAD HUSSAIN: Fahad Hussayn's beautiful gown has a fitted bodice balanced by long sleeves. The floor-sweeping skirt creates elegant movements as you walk - maximize the effect by wearing this piece with heels. It could be quite the statement at any event from obviously dinners to even your best friends 'bridal shower' (don't let the black deter you). We chose to keep hair up as those beautiful Esfir bird cage earrings were a must to show.

36

BOHO: Boho's front knot top is an elegant choice for lunch or any evening plans. It's cut for a slightly loose fit and it's finished with a folded neckline that perfectly complements the flattering off-the-shoulder silhouette. Wear yours tucked into fluid pants or culottes (we've paired ours with a pair from Zara).

Mahgul: This Mahgul top with a very dramatic back is definitely one of fabbitts key picks. The laser cut work on the leather is zipped up for a playful daring look. Paired with either pants or a structured skirt and definitely those gorgeous Esfir earrings you can dress it up for the perfect date.

Kamiar Rokni: The maestro mixes colours and sequins to create the perfect outfit. The shirt is kept relatively simple, but it's the pants which really do the talking and are the signature style of the house. It's the perfect outfit to wear to any wedding event if you want to show off an actual piece of art. 2016

FEEHA JAMSHED: Feeha Jamshed's gown is cut from lustrous fabric that's printed with abstract strokes. The super trendy cold shoulder cut and flowy silhouette is the perfect choice for a summer evening. The silhouette cinches in your waist for a leaner look. Wear this piece to your next dinner with an equally beautiful piece of jewelry.

Travelling is great fun. You get to explore a new place, meet new people and get wiser! We want to know more and will share with you exciting travel stories from a few special people in our new section, planes, trains & automobiles! Where did you go and why? Milan (and nearby towns San Pellegrino & Como), Venice, Rome and Frankfurt for an early summer holiday, mainly to escape the Dubai heat! Italy has been on my to-do-holiday list for a while so I wanted to make sure I cover as much of it as possible in a couple of weeks. I am a sucker for quieter, more scenic towns so we mostly spent time in surrounding places of the main cities (except Venice). Most of the time spent in main cosmopolitan area was for shopping or visiting landmarks. Whom did you travel with? My husband and my 4-year old daughter Soha

travel diaries

Where did you stay? Hotel Bigio (San Pellegrino) and we explored Milan and Lake Como from there, Hotel Excelsior in Venice, Ibis Styles in Rome and Hilton in Frankfurt. Tell us about the sights no one should miss out on Hands done the water springs in San Pellegrino and the panoramic view along Lake Como! Spend a few nights in San Pellegrino (famous for its spring bottled water around the world), go trekking up the mountains there and spend some time dipping your feet in the chilly springs. Lake Como is perfect for a day out with family, with several sightseeing opportunities, including the steep cogwheel train that takes

travel diaries Some tips are to make sure you wear comfortable shoes when exploring the cities, as there is a lot of walking involved, keep portable chargers as you run out of phone battery quick since there is so much to see and take photos of! Also, make sure you carry an international driver’s license if you intend you drive there (more convenient) or be familiar with the public transport there. Inter-city trains are really good and quite scenic so make sure you catch those; I took trains between Milan-Venice-Rome and it was amazing!

What can you do over there to relax and unwind? Visit the QC Terme Spa in San Pellegrino for a relaxing day (especially for couples) as the place has the best massages, thermal baths, open air pools with a view of the lush green mountains around. Hire a bike and ride along Lake Como, it doesn’t hurt to grab a nice cup of gelato on the way. Take a romantic gondola ride at sunset along the Grand Canal in Venice, enjoy all the delicious and fresh seafood at the restaurants there. If you are a shopping buff, don’t miss all the outlet malls around the main cities; for me, the best one with most variety of brands was Noventa Di Piave Designer

Finally any tips? For shopping, Milan is definitely the place to be, whether it’s shopping for designer brands or finding a good bargain at street vendors. For sightseeing and romantic getaways, Venice is my pick and for historic significance Rome is the place to be. Some of my best food moments were: having strawberry panna cotta and pistachio tiramisu from Pompi in Rome, Gelato from Lindt Café in Milan, best coffee at Torrefazione Cannaregio in Venice (make sure you take some ground coffee home) and margarita pizza at Ristoro Della Salute near Colosseum, Rome.

you to the highest point of adjacent hills, ferry ride around the horse-shoe-shaped lake - you can even spot homes owned by celebrities along the lake (e.g. George Clooney) and even catch sights of the Alps when cruising north-west side of the lake!. In Venice, walk around St. Mark’s Square in the evening to enjoy live music and the amazing architecture, visit the Rialto Markets in the morning and get lost (literally) in the amazingly-similar-looking streets of the city along the Grand Canal. In Rome, the Colosseum, a walk along Via Condotti with all luxury retailers leading up to the Spanish Steps is a ‘must do’. Also explore the Vatican City which is like a walking museum with amazing hand-painted works on massive cathedrals and buildings.

All you have to do is ask for help and a dozen people will rush to your side. This is a measure of the virtuousness of your friends, but it's also a measure of your popularity. You are a rock star. But just as your plans for world peace seem to take root, all the variables change. The problem that presents itself midweek isn't the end of the world, but it will take at least a few days to get around. In the meantime, socialize. A casual conversation on Friday will lead more to insights than hours of deep contemplation. Saturday is full of spontaneity and action, but Sunday is a stay-in-bed kind of day.

Don't think of Monday's power struggle as a power struggle. Think of it as a friendly game of tug-of-war. You and you-knowwho simply see things differently; such is the nature of the world. It's beautiful, really, how different we all are. Confide your frustrations to friends in the middle of the week but don't let talking about them get you even more worked up. You have so much going for you right now, and so many friends, and, really, all the time in the world. Don't rush into a major purchase on Friday or Saturday. Take a deep breath and shop around.

Someone else's worldview really throws a wrench into one of your broader life theories at the start of the week. Suddenly you recognize the value of sharing ideas. You're very susceptible to the influence of others right now, so be sure you're around the right people. Wednesday and Thursday see you dreaming about a career change -- perhaps you're ready to do something more creative than what you've been doing -- and Friday some real goals begin to take shape. Your friends have some smart advice for you on Saturday. Solicit their input. Spend Sunday talking about the future.

Whatever you have your arms wrapped around at the beginning of the week may be choking to death (figuratively speaking, of course). Let loose your grip and see how the thing does on its own. See if the idea flies. See if the plant grows. And if someone wants to get you thinking about money on Wednesday or Thursday, turn them down -- you have bigger things on your mind than dollars and cents. Art and creativity figure strongly at the end of the week, and the weekend is full of startling (but wonderful) life lessons. Come Sunday, you have no time for absolutes; you're interested in complexity.

For a while there you were obsessed with being right. Now the very idea of rightness is completely boring to you. Monday and Tuesday find you experimenting in all kinds of ways. On Wednesday, just as you're opening your mouth to criticize someone or something, you'll have a sudden change of heart and say something else entirely. On Thursday, the details you thought you had a handle on explode out of your grasp. This would normally drive you crazy, but this week it delights you. Take your time on Friday and Saturday sorting through a money issue. On Sunday, travel.

You wake up on Monday in the middle of a flower. You're happy as a bee. You're delirious. This is what romance does to you. Tuesday is full of beauty and honey, too. But reality sets in on Wednesday, and you have to get back to work. As much as you'd like to sit at your desk and doodle, or spend your time dreaming up new plans for new projects, your current projects are more pressing. Followthrough is essential, especially Thursday. On Friday, when all your work's done, you'll have time to refocus on you-knowwho. A romantic get away this weekend isn't a bad idea.

Don't buy new paint for the living room until you've consulted the people you live with. A conflict at home can be avoided with a bit of foresight. Besides, are you really sure you want to repaint the living room, or is this just a proxy for another, bigger change you'd like to make in your life? The way things are versus the way you think they should be in your life is a major theme on Wed and Thurs. But by Friday you're barely thinking of your life at all. How solipsistic that would be! When so many others are worse off than you are! Maybe it's time to volunteer somewhere. Look into it this weekend.

aquarius

pisces

Someone switches on your bulb at the beginning of the week and your glow lights up the room. People are deeply affected by you these days. With great power, as they say, comes great responsibility. Act as a force for good in the lives of your friends. Be generous with your love, but don't think about being generous with your pocketbook, as money is probably scarce right now. Toward the end of the week, you're thinking bigger and bigger: What can you do to make the world a better place? How can you leverage your talents for the greater good? Spend Sunday coming up with concrete ideas.

You are a paragon of selflessness at the start of the week. If someone needs to borrow your car for the afternoon, you offer to let them borrow it all week. This is good and virtuous of you, but don't you have errands to run too? In your haste to help others, don't forget to help yourself. On Wednesday or Thursday, treat yourself; at the very least, do something restorative and relaxing. Friday and Saturday promise to be utterly bizarre days -- ambiguous, enigmatic, dreamy -- but a delicious dinner on Sunday returns you to the real world.

The beginning of the week is a great time to get to know a perfect stranger. You are particularly receptive to new input right now. An exciting discovery awaits you on Tuesday. As a matter of fact, discoveries abound all week. Wednesday isn't jam packed with physical excitement, but your mind is in overdrive. On Thursday, someone proposes a metaphor that applies to your life in a truly useful way. Friday and Saturday are dominated by romance and fun. On Sunday, communication is key. Check your email. Call up an old friend. Go stand in the street and shout out a message to all who can hear it.

As much as you're interested in making money, you're more interested in not losing it right now -- which is why a getrich-quick scheme should hold no appeal for you on Monday, and Tuesday will find you feeling conservative as well. Artistic inspiration will strike you Wednesday and you'll spend hours in creative contemplation -- a perfectly blissful way to pass an afternoon. On Thursday, a friend will draw out your compassionate side. And on Friday and Saturday, your family will need you. But Sunday? Sunday is all yours. A day of smooching? A day in the woods? Another day spent being creative? It's totally up to you.
