Tell us a little about yourself. I was born in Karachi to a Venezuelan mother and a Pakistani father, quite a mixed culture upbringing. I was raised in Karachi and moved to Dubai in 2004 to pursue a BFA in Visual Arts with a major in Photography. I started exhibiting fine art photography in galleries both in the UAE and internationally as a student and after graduating was approached by people to take pictures for them, which led me to work as a freelance commercial photographer and have been at it ever since. I shoot fashion, portraits and weddings. What first drew you to photography? I started shooting with 80s style cheap cameras when I was quite young during vacation trips with my family. From waterproof disposable cameras to Yashicas and Canon powershot film cameras, I loved taking pictures. My father has always been a hobbyist and he had an amazing Minolta 35 mm kit with some nice lenses. I would tinker and shoot rolls of film with 30

his equipment often, and eventually he got me a 35 mm manual camera for myself. I took photographs as a hobby until I moved to Dubai. As a student I found myself spending all my free time in the darkroom or lighting studio and the passion created by studying and practicing photography over the 4 years of college made it an easy decision to make it my profession.I got commissioned by UAE based designers Ayesha Depala and Essa to shoot different projects for them while I was a student and that brought out the interest in fashion photography. According to you, what is the biggest factor behind a good photograph? For me, a strong composition can be the difference between a decent photograph and a brilliant one. What kind of photos do you love shooting? Portraits are my passion, from fashion portraits to strangers on the street. It has always been my favourite type of photography. I do enjoy shooting architecture as well as it’s a lone-wolf endeavour. I find it quite meditative and reflective. Is there a theme or message you try to give off with your photographs? I wouldn't say I have a set message. Each project has it's own purpose. Commercial photography has it’s goals that each image needs to achieve, and fine art photography needs to sit well within it’s own conceptual themes. In terms of visuals, I love to create imagery with texture and dimension, as photography is one of those art forms that can feel very 2D and flat. I also frequently make asymmetrical images to counter balance my photographic subjects. What do you think of the phone photo culture and selfies etc? Do you think it's killing the quality of photos? I was not a fan of Instagram initially when it came out, but then I slowly came to realise that the selfie culture has made everyone much more aware of what makes a good photograph, and that has only raised my value as a photographer to the people who take phone photo culture seriously. In the end the best camera you have is the one that’s on you ( Chase Jarvis said that) and I too am guilty for slinging my camera out of the way to take a picture with my iPhone. The instant pleasure of shooting, editing and sharing a good photograph on my device is not lost to me at all! I enjoy it, encourage it and I have even given private lessons on how to take good photographs with phones ! You can find me on instagram at @altamashurooj. What cliches in photography do you steer yourself away from? I can’t stand selective colouring, for example a black & white photograph except that one red rose…may we all be forgiven for that photographic sin. I also stay away from white vignettes, overdone HDR effects, and watermarks. Would you say you take photos for yourself or for others? I’ve certainly done both over the years.I prefer taking pictures for myself and some of my best images come from photoshoots that I have set up for personal reasons. 2015

Who are your favourite Classic photographers and how did they influence you? I take inspiration from all forms of visual art. There is not one particular artist but a plethora of true loves! I have my classic heroes like Michelangelo and Da Vinci, William Turner's haunting landscapes, Salvador Dali and Saddequain have been an immense inspiration as well to help me develop my visual language. In terms of photography, art photographers like Helmut Newton and Robert Mapplethorpe's work help me find composition and a grungy, direct style. Gregory Crewdson taught me the value of pre-production and the power of subtle light. Orwin Olaf taught me how to engage your audience visually and be flexible with my lighting ideas, Stiechen and Man Ray help me push for experimentation and find my personal style. Then there are the fashion world greats like Richard Avedon, Nick Knight, Paolo Roversi, Mario Testino and Michael David Adams that have inspired me greatly by just keeping me in awe of the kind of photography I always aspire to create. Your favourite books on Photography? I love Lindsey Adler’s Shooting in Sh*tty Light. The Photo Book, which is an alphabetical visual journey of many photographers. Photographing Shadow and Light by the brilliant Joey L. The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. Blogs and musings by David Hobby (Strobist.com), Joe McNally and Sara Lando’s blog writings have been very helpful as well. Are your shoots usually instinctual or planned? A balanced mix of the two works best for me. I like to shoot with some pre-production plans but always leave room to keep things up in the air. That way I shoot from the gut and welcome something special to happen with the team I'm working with. Tell us about your favourite piece of work/ most successful project. My favourite personal work was an art project entitled "Taking Life." It was an experimental piece done using

alternative darkroom techniques. At a beach in the outskirts of Karachi, my friends and I found a dying bird. We were torn, whether to take its life and end its misery or let nature take its own course. I filmed the moral dilemma digitally with a video camera I had on me. After extracting clips from the film, I photocopied the image and then photocopied the photocopy. Then I photocopied the photocopy of the photocopy of the image. I did this until I got to the 50th or 60th photocopy, then I took to the darkroom to make paper negatives of the dissolved images to make a rather unique blend of old school photography and experimental darkroom techniques. The high contrast is a representation the convenient indifference of everyday life and the burden of humanity. The greys are almost lost, for we knew what had to be done, but did not do it anyway. We left the bird to Mother Nature and walked away. This series made me question the weight of responsibility, the discomfort of doing the easy thing instead of the right thing and the morals and ethics we humans are required to uphold. What is one question nobody ever asks you but you wish they did? I am surprised no one has ever asked me more about why I compose some shots the way I do. I find both symmetry and asymmetry quite pleasing and constantly play with the 2 compositional forms in the same projects to keep the viewer’s eyes moving about an image. I love to use converging and flat lines to frame my subjects within the image. Are there any upcoming projects that we should get excited for? I’m going to be shooting a very special project with the internationally acclaimed UAE based designer Essa Wala in Dubai over the next few months and it’s going to be an experimental and grungy image making experience. I can't wait ! How much potential do you see in young Pakistani photographers? The potential is unbelievable! The Beautiful landscape photography, street photography and portrait work coming out of Pakistan in the last few years has been
truly inspiring. The images created here can make you fall in love with this beautiful land over and over again. Then there’s the wonderful fashion work being created for designers and editorials alike and the growth has been stunning. I am so proud to see the international quality of the work coming out of the local talent. Following the footsteps of the veteran artists like Tapu Javeri and Amean J,and coupled with the brilliant art schools shaping the skills of the future I expect the upcoming Pakistani photographers to continue impressing us all with their powerful imagery. 2015
