from lahore to new york Not only did TAG get a chance to showcase the work of elevem brilliant artists from Pakistan but we saw artisans painting and sculpting on site, saw food demos inspired by famous art pieces, walked through beautifully designed interactive art exhibits and joined in the community art project by painting our experience of the fair. Giant see through handbags, glittering brass teddy bears and winding lines of people waiting to see art set the tone for the event. And the New Yorkers themselves couldn’t have been more welcoming. A gallerist across from us took us under his wing and we later celebrated together when John Slattery from Mad Men turned up and bought one of his pieces. One of the biggest surprises was what a big audience our little booth had. Little old art aficionados who were thrilled by Noreen Rashid, Nizakat Ali Depar and Shiblee Munir’s work because they had discovered miniature art in the 1960s while they were on the hippy trail. Pak-ophile collectors who had been exposed to art from Pakistan years ago, considered it the art world’s best kept secret and had been using it to decorate their mansions in the Hamptons. One of these was Catherine Weinstock, a seasoned New York City interior designer who it turns out, could tell me thing or two about the Lahore Art Scene. We were invited over for Roshashana and left after promises to work together and stay over at each others homes. We spent one afternoon hanging out with one of the artists we were 38

Sanam Taseer, the owner of Taseer Art Gallery, showcased the work of eleven brilliant artists from Pakistan in New York earlier this month at the Affordable Art Fair. From painting, sculpture to live food demonstrations, we saw it all. Here's what Sanam has to share:
showing - the lovable and fiendishly talented Salman Toor in his super cool studio which is part of an art collective in a giant warehouse in Brooklyn. We got a preview to his upcoming solo in New York’s Aicon Gallery. When I say preview I mean I forced him to pull out still wet canvases that he was too polite to tell me not to touch so that I would leave and not sit on his paint palette (again). We had the world famous Khalil Chisty to thank for the fact that we even got the show up in the first place. It was almost surreal to see Khalil Chisty who has the art world at his feet and had just yesterday shown us around the iconic building he designed in Brooklyn which is solely populated by Hollywood royalty, at our little booth with his shirt sleeves rolled up showing us how to use rotary drills and spirit levels.
One thing I find for myself is that even after a play or film has wrapped up, there is a part of that character that always stays with me.
One of the highlights was getting an offer on one of Shiblee Munir’s large scale pieces from The Sex Museum. I was initially worried how the western audiences would react to the work but they loved Saba Khan and Zahra Asim’s kitschy, congested desi interiors, Ali Azmats’s broody hijra portraits, Shaan Taseer’s Mediterannean cities and Atif’s neon bright neo–miniature digitals. The turnout was better than I could even have hoped for. All the Pakistani New Yorkers turned up to support us. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy proudly announced that she had travelled all the way from DC for the show. Other attendees included Beth Citron from the Rubin Museum, Priyanka Mathews from Sotheby’s and Aimee Bell an editor at Vanity Fair. One of my favorite pieces done by Madiha Sikandar was bought by Marie Brenner - New York doyenne who writes for Vanity Fair, The New Yorker and whose book inspired the 1999 movie The Insider. When she told me that Frieda Kahlo had been her grand aunt I felt that it had found a good home. It was as exhausting as it was thrilling but here's to hoping we can match the heroic output of the brilliant brave contemporary artists of Pakistan and take them from here to NYC to the world. 2015
